i enjoyed the FUCK out of tmmn S1 like idgaf ik we pose to hate reboots or whatever but this was truly done so tastefully imo!
i love the artstyle, i find it to be warmer, brighter & yet softer all at once. the narrative changes were fun & kept me on my toes while still not straying enough for it to feel unrelated. it felt like a dose of sweet nostalgia w a fresh twist like idk im actually very pleased.
and i can't wait for S2!

I love Mew Mew Mint's transformation from Tokyo Mew Mew so much
youtube
One of my favorite magical girl transformations. It's a shame the reboot didn't do it justice.
youtube
The new one isn't bad, but it pales in comparison to the original. I don't like how she's just standing still. She's too stiff.
The original had Mint doing ballet and twirling around while transforming. It was a lot cooler.

Tokyo Mew Mew New Episode 12: Rain and Tears Season One Finale Review
I went into this episode a bit nervous. TMMN has been doing a really good job taking things that annoyed me in the manga or anime and improving upon them. However, I still know to be wary when things feel like they’re going a bit too well. Did they drop the ball in the final quarter? No. They made the best version of the ending to this arc. That’s not to say it’s perfect, but it fixed so much.…

Once again it is time for
Tumblr media
This year's event will be hosted by mahou Zeldas, because I've been spending a lot of time in Hyrule this year.
Tumblr media
Mahou anime of the year:
Tumblr media
(Futari Wa Precure Splash Star, Yes! Precure 5, Yes! Precure 5 GoGo, Smile Precure!, Mahou Tsukai Precure!, Hirogaru Sky Precure!, Otona Precure, Tokyo Mew Mew New s2, Magical Destroyers, Zettai Bouei Leviathan, Petite Princess Yucie, season movies for Splash Star, Yes5, Yes5 GoGo, Smile & Delicious Party, Crossover movie for Fresh Precure!)
Then the stuff I read:
Tumblr media
(Saint Tail, Stellar Witch Lips, Magical Girl Tsubame, W.i.t.c.h. reboot, Smile Precure novel, Null Magical Girl, Magia Record Scene Zero)
I also keep up with what kind of designs Magia Record releases though I don't play it or otherwise follow the story.
Extremely Precure year this time around though that was not intentional, usually I only manage one backlog season per year. But I started with Smile, and then we were hit with the news that we'd have a Yes5/Splash Star sequel in autumn, and in preparation for that I had to power through some 150 episodes for the original series. And then I somehow ended up watching all of Mahou Tsukai in less than 2 weeks. And then there was Otona as well of course.
Tumblr media
Now there's only three backlog seasons left, and they should be doable in a year if the Mahou Tsukai sprint is of any indication, though we'll see how that goes. I'd like to take a look at other similar shows too (like Doremi and Sailor Moon) but I want to clear Precure first before moving to the next thing.
The W.i.t.c.h. reboot was also a thing this year, which seems to have come and went with a thud. Which is a shame because I was looking forward to it, but... well it wasn't particularly good. I guess it can pick up of there's more to the story.
For the first time I've followed a Magia Record (game) story, with Scene Zero. The format is difficult but I am interested, so it's possible I'll look into more MagiReco stories once Scene Zero is over. The game has so many cute characters so I'd certainly like to know more about them.
This year I also took part in ArtFight and did some mostly mahou themed OC art, which was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to doing the same next year as well if they host the event again.
Now onto the awards!
Best henshin design goes to Cure Sky! Blue lead Cure aside this is a top tier magical girl design, and that is mostly thanks to the cape, especially the red inside and yellow fringe. It looks so majestic! But being a half-cape prevents her from looking too stuffy. The thin twintails also look great with the cape in action shots. And of course she is also stupidly cute.
Tumblr media
Also a shoutout to Saint Tail's simple but very effective look with a rarely seen colour scheme.
Best team design goes to Stellar Witch Lips! Similar enough to be a team but everyone has their own take on the theme, black makes for a good base colour and the sparkly tops look amazing.
Tumblr media
Best powerup design goes to Cure Felice's Alexandrite form! She looks so regal and powerful, truly a nature goddess!
Tumblr media
Best civilian design goes to Cure Sky in general! I just like her practical style and the clothes look all comfy.
Tumblr media
Best hair goes to Junia! It looks so soft and poofy and her pastel colour palette makes everything even cuter.
Tumblr media
Best magical item goes to the tiara and amulets in Petite Princess Yucie! They aren't that special to be honest but I'm always ready for magical items that don't look like cheap plastic toys.
Tumblr media
Best henshin scene goes to Cure Sky! A lot of dynamic animation, the tinted split screen at the end is fresh for Precure, the modulation in the middle amps up the power, the dark background makes everything a little bit cooler, and the cape flip and wings at the end just look amazing.
youtube
Best fan creation goes to ArtFight in general! It was my first time participating, and getting to draw other people's ocs on a low threshold was great, and obviously receiving a ton of art of my own ocs felt amazing.
Tumblr media
Best relationship goes to the group in Petite Princess Yucie! I really like how the side characters have distinct relationships with each other and not just the main character, and how not everyone gets along all the time (or most of the time with Glenda and Elmina). The fact that they're also rivals makes things more interesting and everything culminates successfully in the power of friendship in the end.
Tumblr media
Best mascot goes to Saki's cat Korone! Not exactly a traditional Precure mascot but he does become more mascot-like towards the end. Absolute unit of a cat, gets a funny deep voice and even lands a hit on the final boss, and most importantly isn't annoying.
Tumblr media
Best supporting character goes to Kintoleski from Splash Star! He's a pretty simple character but I like villains who are honourable and polite, and he managed to be consistently funny as well.
Tumblr media
Best visual goes to Stellar Witch Lips! The story wasn't really anything to write home about but the ultra cute and sparkly art is just magical.
Tumblr media
Best audio goes to Updradft Shining bgm! It's surprisingly epic for such an early series attack and it'd be cool if the franchise used music like this more.
youtube
A honourable mention to Tsubasa's eagle sound effect in the Majestic Halation attack, Mabayu's (MagiReco) silly "nuwawawa" scream of pain in a decidedly serious scene, and every "Haa!" from Ha-chan.
Best scene goes to the separation and reunion scene from Mahou Tsukai Precure! Or I guess that's more like half of an episode. Really impressive how they spent so much time on pretty low-key character stuff like this.
Honourable mention to the big battle towards the end of Petite Princess Yucie.
The Innovation award is given to a magical girl work that I think does something fresh for the genre. This year it goes to Hirogaru Sky! Precure for having a boy Cure, an adult Cure and most importantly a non-pink lead Cure! Which isn't particularly notable for the genre as a whole but a gigantic achievement for this franchise. Hopefully it wasn't just a 20 year celebratory fluke and we'll see more variety in the future too.
The Golden Mana award is the prize given to one thing I didn't like.
Tumblr media
This year it goes to the henshin forms in Otona Precure, or more specifically the way it did absolutely nothing about them. No adults-as-magical girls, no new looks as 14-year-olds, and not even a new powerup form for the final finisher. Boo! I'm not really saying that the show is required to include new forms just because I wanted it or because it's common in the genre, but that would definitely have made me a lot more forgiving of its many other flaws. And this is my list so I get to complain about my preferences.
Dishonourable mention to Nozomi's catchphrase in Yes5 and GoGo for exemplifying the selfish and pushy aspect of pink heroines like this that often goes uncriticised.
Best character goes to Cure Sky! In addition to the excellent character design she also has a fun personality, "earnest dumbass" is a great combo, and her determination is just great. I also like that she isn't super girly for once. The story of Hirogaru isn't that good so Sora too is held back from having a truly awesome story, but as a character she is still enjoyable enough.
Tumblr media
Best work goes to Petite Princess Yucie! It has fun characters, great designs, good group dynamics, interesting world and a really strong ending. It's a shame they don't seem to do kids' anime like this nowadays?
Tumblr media
Plans for 2024
Tumblr media
Onwards to 2024! I swear this year I'm going to continue with MagiPro, I've been stuck at volume 7 for several years.

Can you please tell me all about Tokyo Mew Mew? It looks adorable and I saw that you watched it so...
Go on, my friend. If you get the time, please tell me everything!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Omg omg omg. I love you whoever you are for asking about this. So Tokyo Mew Mew is the first anime I watched before I knew what anime was. I watched it on a channel called Pop Girl. The dubbed version is called Mew Mew Power. So I knew it as that. I never finished the anime until I was a lot older because they stopped dubbing it at the 26th episode. So I didn't know it was an anime until I caught up with Fairy Tail, just before fairy tail 2014 came out. I was recommended by a friend to watch Fairy Tail so that was how I was introduced to the world of anime. Anyway I was going through a list of what animes to watch and there it was. Tokyo Mew Mew. My mind was blown that I had actually watched anime before. So I finished it in subbed because I thought it was just a normal show that was cancelled when I was a kid. When actually it was just that they stopped dubbing. Anyway.
So Tokyo Mew Mew is in the magical girl genre. It follows five girls who originally don't know each other who have been mutated with rare animal DNAs. (In order of introduction) Ichigo (Zoey) with the DNA of Iriomote Cat, Minto (carina) with the DNA of a Blue Lorikeet, Retasu (Bridget) with the DNA of a Finless Porpoise, Bu-Ling (Kikki) with the DNA of Golden Lion Tamarin and Zakuro (Renee) who has the DNA of a Grey Wolf.
So they become superheros who have the abilities of said animals. When in their transformations Ichigo becomes Mew Strawberry, Minto becomes Mew Mint, Retasu become Mew Lettuce, Bu-Ling becomes Mew Pudding and Retasu becomes Mew Pomegranate.
So the plot is that there are Aliens (Kisshu, Pie and Tart) that have come to Earth wishing to reclaim it for their kind, as they lived on earth 3 million years ago but had to leave because of a series of disasters nearly led to their extinction. Later they return to Earth and see that humans have taken over. They feel that humans are destroying the planet so they release Para Paras which are octopus like creatures that fuse with animals and create monsters called Chimera Animas. The Aliens want the monsters to speed up the destruction of earth to wipe out the human race so they can come back. In the anime they also added that the Para Paras can fuse with the soul of a human and plants as well. But in the manga it's only animals.
So, because of this threat two men called Ryou and Keiichiro carry on the work of one of their fathers I can't remember who and learn how to fuse the DNA of red data animals (endangered) with human DNA as they are the only animals that can't be fused with Para Paras. The five girls are chosen because their DNA is the most compatible with the five red data animals. Ryou and Keiichiro built a cafe where the girls will work as their cover. But the cafe is really their headquarters.
The anime is basically the Ichigo looking for the other 4 mews and protecting the world from the monsters. It's honestly such a a cute and fun anime. I recommend. I haven't watched the reboot yet but I am rewatching the original anime as we speak.
I'm gonna get back into cosplay and I'm gonna cosplay as Ichigo because of how much I loved and still love her.
Tumblr media
Can I just say this whole sequence in the anime is so beautiful. Ichigo is so beautiful. (Above)

Just gotta gush about the Precure franchise
Honestly I really, really wish that Precure had been imported to America when I was a kid because it is, without a doubt, the biggest Girl Power franchise I've ever seen.
We have FLOWERS and FASHION and MAKEUP and STUFFED ANIMALS and PASTRIES and FAIRY TALES and we are going to kick your ass with all of the above!
Even childrearing - the most traditionally feminine activity there is - is portrayed in a badass manner. I mean, look at how many seasons focus on the team taking care of some kind of magical baby. Heck, in Hugtto and Hirogaru said babies are the recruiters, so the show is literally saying that being a mom is an act of heroism in and of itself.
Plus, there's NO OBLIGATORY ROMANCE.
I remember that one of my complaints about the original Tokyo Mew Mew, as much as I love it, is that Masaya wasn't a very compelling love interest. Like he was there to be the love interest because these kinds of stories have love interests. One of the best things the reboot did was try to fix that, and godDAMN did it work.
That's not a factor in Precure. There's certainly quite a few eligible bachelors - just look at how Prince Charming type characters are in the series.
But it's not a guaranteed required necessary eventually I'll find the word I'm looking for thing for a season.
Out of the seventeen completed seasons (counting Futari wa and MaxHeart as one season, same with Yes! and GoGo), only EIGHT of them have a focused romance plot. (Not counting already established couples like Macaron/Chocolat)
Which, believe me, is pretty big considering the shows I grew up with.
And the anthology format makes it perfect for newcomers to hop in whenever. You don't have to watch every episode of Suite to be able to watch Hugtto, you can watch the seasons out of order, you can skip seasons entirely if you want! (I actually skipped the last three seasons - Healin' Good because I didn't care for the characters, Tropical-Rouge because it didn't hook me, DeliPa because it just looked WAY too cutesy for my tastes.)
Which is good because COME ON CRUNCHYROLL IMPORT HUGTTO AND STAR TWINKLE YOU HAVE A LA MODE AND HEALIN GOOD AND YOU DON'T HAVE THE SEASONS WHICH COME BETWEEN THEM WHICH HELLO ARE MY FAVORITE SEASONS
I want to be able to legally watch my favorite ass-kickers, dammit!!!
Anyways thus concludes my gushing about Precure, totally looking forward to the next episode of Hirogaru, loving the new things they're trying with this season, totally looking forward to gushing over Cure Wing when he shows up.

Personally, I could see a sort of Power Rangers/Avatar-esque future seasons after Team RWBY defeats Salem. Where we have a new team dealing with other facets of Remnant that RWBY glanced at.
The thought kinda sprung from my Tokyo Mew Mew/RWBY AU idea with an all Faunus team facing aggressions micro or major together. A play off of Team RWBY's familial element.
Basically not a reboot as so many of the "critics" push so much as a new story and cast altogether in the same world and its elements. No need to start over Team RWBY's journey. Especially when some rewrites might as well be new characters in a new story.
That'd be potentially very cool, and a fun way to explore Remnant from new angles.
Oooh, Tokyo Mew Mew/RWBY sounds fun in of itself!

I've gone through all the submissions!
Submissions: 105 (a few of which submitted multiple characters)
Re-submissions to add more detail: 2
Characters submitted: 92
Characters nobody submitted who are being included because I think they should be included (mostly because I would have submitted them if someone else was running the bracket): ...um...18
Most-submitted character: Eri, My Hero Academia (4)
Most-submitted character I had not previously heard of: Naru Kotoishi, Barakamon
Franchise with the most entries: Pretty Cure (9)
Individual anime with the most entries: The Case Study of Vanitas (4)
Characters named "Maria": 2
Dragons: 4.5 (not all from Fire Emblem)
Still a lot of stuff to do before I start posting polls, not the least of which being how to efficiently run a double-elimination bracket with 110 members. (I guess I could track down 18 anime kids to make it an even power of 2, but then I'd be running a poll that's ~¼ characters chosen entirely by me, which feels kinda ridiculous.) But I figured I should let people know how things are going.
Full list of characters in the bracket below the cut.
The following list is in alphabetical order. For characters with both personal and family names, I alphabetized by family names. (Except when I mistook which name was which, because the internet cannot decide whether to use Japanese name order or European name order, which isn't a problem except when it makes people like me worry about whether they're naming characters wrong.)

Hey boo boo, thank you😚
1: 2003 and 2018 are my favorite versions of TMNT while ezguple's (I think that's how it's spelled) 1999 turtles is my favorite fan version.
2: I have attempted to learn Japanese multiple times but have failed due to not being able to fully commit time to learn it.
3: For all my obsession with TMNT I am also majorly hyperfixated on Tokyo Mew Mew and LOVE magical girls. But don't get it confused, the I severely dislike the English dubbed "mew mew power", it's awful.(still better than the reboot tho)

I got another another another AU within AU idea :D for the Double Isekai AU with Yuuki and Orpheus, you know that magical girl AU plus Tokyo Mew Mew(another magical girl series :D). This idea will allow Orpheus to be the magical boy this time :D. Basically make Orpheus a mew mew aka the one that says “Mew mew style, mew mew grace, mew mew power in your face”. Maybe even a fire cat type one(as not only to refer to well a shout out to the other AU) but also maybe the shrouds can be connected to it too(Idia is a mew mew too :D). Heck wonder if there can be other “mew mews” at NRC :D
I never saw Tokyo mew mew. I heard it got a reboot or smth, but at that time it didn't strike me as smth important. :'3
Anons be putting me to do research/j
Also, a fun fact, all of the 7 Yuus in the double Isekais are supposed to be satires of popular Yuu/reader types in the Fandom. Guess y'all loved the chaotic big sibling type the most.
Anyhow... I know that the gist of it would be like part time job at a cafe, while also being magical girls with animal themes and saving the world from the bad guys. I think this is the whole gist of it... From what I heard around. :v
So the best I can offer is: there's a magical cafe that trains young magical girls in secret.
Orpheus initially applied for the job because 'fuck it, I need pocket money that I don't need to share with Yuuki'. (Yuuki uses most of the money of food) So in true sibling fashion, Yuki joins on the bandwagon for 2 reasons: 1. They also need extra money that Ortho cannot access, 2. They have to show their lil brothers that they are better at it. Siblings can and will make almost anything a competition so these 2 are no excuse.
Their parents are proud the 2 want to work for money, but they also are a bit worried that these 2 will distract each other from work on purpose. :'D
Cue the 2 becoming magical girls. The shop is owned by a magical creature named Uvi, so Uvi has to train them.
We also have fucking Jared, a 19 years old guy that just works there. He's not a magical gurl bc he's too basic for it. :v
Orpheus get the cat motif this time, while Yuuki has the goose the puppy motif. They do go around and learn how to fight evil bad guys. It all goes well.
Until we get the Isekai.
With no Uvi and 0 idea what the actual fuck is going on, the 2 have to navigate twisted wonderland and use their magical heroes abilities to beat the shit out of the overBlots. :3
Their outfits are also a bit more intricate than the Tokyo mew mew ones. A lot more sparkly too.

Hapuriainen's animation, comics & games (and other) of 2023
Got the wrap up almost sort of out on time this year!
Anime: Frieren (cour 1), Re:Zero (season 1) Futari wa Precure Splash Star, Yes! Precure 5, Yes! Precure 5 GoGo, Smile Precure!, Mahou Tsukai Precure!, Hirogaru Sky! Precure, Otona Precure, Zettai Bouei Leviathan, Petite Princess Yucie, Tokyo Mew Mew New s2, Magical Destroyers
Did I legit not watch any other non-magical girl anime than Frieren and Re:Zero? I'll have to try harder this year. Overall 2023 was a very Precure year and I'm done with almost all of the seasons, only 3 left. But Frieren has been amazing, it looks so beautiful (and is certainly an improvement from the manga on this front), the music is great and of course I already liked the story. Re:Zero was compelling enough that I might watch the second season even if the isekai aspect really isn't for me. Emilia best girl.
As for Precure, usually I manage to watch one backlog season in addition to the airing one, but this time I surprised myself and did five. Which may not have been smart since it was kind of a chore at some points, but I wanted to prepare for the Otona sequel (which turned out to be a disappointment). The 2023 season Hirogaru was one of the better ones thanks to the excellent heroine.
Manga: Are You Alice, Saint Tail, Stellar Witch LIPS, Zelda manga (Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Ocarina of Time, Four Swords)
On the manga front there wasn't much of note, the ongoing series from previous years (OP, MHA, Undead Unluck, Spy x Family, Frieren, Witch Hat Atelier…) continue and I don't have a lot to say about them, except that my interest in One Piece is still very low even if we finally got out of Wano.
I did manage to finish Are You Alice after it being on hold for years, so that's something at least. It has absolutely lovely art and I like the concept, but it did get kind of complicated at times. And I wish we had seen more Alices.
Movies: Super Mario movie, Puss in Boots 2, The Bad Guys, Strange World, the Boy and the Heron, Barbie, various Precure movies
Barbie enters the scene as one of the few live action anything and it was great. The message didn't really speak to me personally but it has an amazing aesthetic, fun story and something to say. And like everyone else has already said, I agree that Puss in Boots 2 was great on all fronts and The Bad Guys was a lot of fun too.
Comics & novels: W.i.t.c.h. reboot, Null Magical Girl, Smile Precure! novel, Magia Record scene 0
The W.i.t.c.h. reboot came out of nowhere and landed with a thud, I was willing to give it a chance but the story just wasn't that interesting. Not sure how I would rate it if it didn't have the comparison against a childhood favourite.
Games: Zelda 1, Zelda Oracle of Ages & Seasons, Ocarina of Time, Tears of the Kingdom, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, Pokemon Arceus (or half of it), Usagi Shima
From the anime side 2023 was a very Precure year, but on the game side it was an extremely Zelda year. Or it started as a Pokemon year with Brilliant Diamond, which was not enjoyable, and continued with Arceus, which has been the best Pokemon game I've played. Haven't cleared it yet though since I got this sudden need to play Zelda, and I didn't want to rush it. But I'm looking forward to finishing it.
On the Zelda front Tears of the Kingdom was just as great as I hoped, and it effectively monopolised my summer. But as much as I like botw Link, I'm ready for a new Hyrule. As for the older loz games, the OG game was too retro for me, but I really liked Oracle of Ages. Seasons had fun gameplay but the story was very nothing.
Then there was Usagi Shima which was cute for about 2 weeks but once I completed the bun book there wasn't really anything left to do. But it was fun for what it is.
Best work: Tears of the Kingdom
Best music: Frieren (A Powerful Mage)
Best visuals: Barbie looked amazing, especially for a live-action movie. Frieren on the anime side. As for manga, Are You Alice
Best character design: Cure Sky
Best OP: Hirogaru Sky Precure for the song, Frieren for visuals
Best ED: Frieren also
Biggest WTF: the sequel to a goddamn Shrek spin-off being so much better than it had any business being. Also the entirety of Null Magical Girl.
Best Girl: Frieren
Best Boy: Botw Link again I guess, I spend a lot of time thinking about him
Best Side Girl: I dunno, Ha-chan (Mahou Tsukai Precure)? She is just so cute.
Best Side Boy: Rauru (the goat one not the owl guy), he got a compelling story that lets us see him displaying many different emotions and he has such a pleasant voice. I'm not a furry but…
Worst Girl: Nozomi (Yes! Precure 5 & GoGo, she was ok in Otona though)
Worst Boy: I don't think there's enough works with a notable male main character this year and I don't remember hating any of them. I guess I didn't particularly like Subaru (re:Zero) but he wasn't like, the worst.
Worst Side Girl: Ellee-chan (Hirogaru Sky! Precure), baby characters just really don't work for me
Worst Side Boy: I don't really like the friendly rivals in Pokemon, so Barry.
Best romance: I continue to ship Link and Zelda (botw/totk)
Best non-romantic relationship: The fact that botw Link isn't alone any more and has friends who are happy to see him and fight with him
Worst romance: Main girl x main guy from Stellar Witch Lips, they barely had any scenes together
Worst non-romantic relationship: the group dynamics in the W.i.t.c.h. reboot didn't work nearly as well as in the original.
Plans for 2024:
Tiger & Bunny and Spy x Family part 2
Wonderful Precure!
Starting three backlog Precure I haven't seen yet with Heartcatch
Maybe it'll be Evangelion's year this time?
Ghost Trick is currently downloading on my Switch since it was on sale
More Zelda in general
Case Study of Vanitas started getting published here so I'll probably catch up on that

My 2023 Anime Watchlist
Anime (and related media) I've watched this year
Tumblr media
Tokyo Mew Mew New Season 2 (2023)
Second (and final?) season of the Tokyo Mew Mew reboot! Always here for some good magical girls! I never finished watching the original series, so it was nice to see how the story goes. I wouldn't call it amazing, but it's a cool series. I wish they would make a third season for the A La Mode arc which came out later, but it seems they might be ending it here, Idk (I've never read the manga either)...
Subs since there's no dub.
Tumblr media
Saint Seiya: The Beginning a.k.a. Knights of the Zodiac (2023)
Live-action movie adaption. Would I watch more if they do it? Yeah. Was it good? Not really... I'm not saying it's horrible, but eh, it was weak. The absence of 3 out of 5 boys is definetely felt. I mean, I didn't expect much of it, so it's not like I was dissappointed! ^^' I'm a SS fan, so I was in to see what they cooked.
I watched it dubbed at the cinema (there wasn't a subbed session but it's fine!).
Tumblr media
One Piece: The Series Season 1 (2023)
Live-action adaption of the first arc. My first contact with the franchise! Charismatic group, the power of friendship, adventure in a new world, fun pirate crews... I loved it. Still pondering if I should get into this giant beast of an anime. It's just...So long. Never-ending. I'm sure I would like it but dear lord, is it long. Anyway. For now I'll content myself with waiting for the second season.
I alternated between dubs and subs! I think I prefer subbed but I wanted to check out the dub and it was also very good.
Tumblr media
Porco Rosso (1992)
A Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki oldie! I was keeping an eye out for the Ghibli Fest going on in the US this year and I realized this was the only movie in the list I hadn't watched yet, so. It's definetely not among my favorites, but it was a good movie. A Pig-faced bounty hunter pilot in and adventure through Italy. Needed a little more Gina thought!
Subs cause there's no dub.
Tumblr media
Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac Season 2 (2022)
Second season of the 3DCG reboot of Saint Seiya, covering the first half of the 12 Temples arc. It's definetely still way below the classic series, but the battles had quite an upgrade from season 1! Also no time spent on original characters I don't care about :) And of course it's always a pleasure to see the Gold Saints... and the scenes the classic series didn't adapt! I'm glad season 3 is coming next year!
I watched it dubbed (sadly they changed the og cast in my country, but the new one did a good job too).
Tumblr media
YashaHime: Princess Half-Demon Season 2 (2022-23)
Second (and final?) season of the Inu-Yasha spin-off sequel. Look, Yashahime has a lot of flaws, but it has its qualities too and personally I enjoyed it. Nice to travel around the feudal era in this world with familiar and new characters. I would watch more but I think that was it? Would definetely want them to make some changes... I heard the manga is different, so...food for thought!
I didn't have access to the dub when I watched s1 but this time I did! (I'm not very fond of parts of the dub, but overall it was good).
Tumblr media
Spy x Family S1 (2022) and S2 (2023)
After seeing gifs since last year I finally sit down to watch it! It's cute, it's funny, and it's cool! Spies, assassins, school, AND family shenanigans! Loved it. Bring me more. Looking forward for the upcoming movie and for the s3 announcement.
I watched most of it dubbed but the dub is a few episodes behind the subbed version so I finished season 2 in Japanese.
Tumblr media
Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning (2023)
I didn't even watch Kizuna but I heard it wasn't necessary so might as well go, specially since they actually put this movie in theaters in my country and got most of the og dub cast... Sadly I wasn't impressed by the movie. I thought it was pretty meh. Could have given more for the group to do (it was mostly about the new character). Anyway... PS: The opening sequence was LOVELY though!!! ^^
Tumblr media
Yu Yu Hakusho (1992-94)
I used to watch it back in the day, but never watched all of it until now! Good stuff. Not perfect, but it's a great series!!! Charismatic group, cool friendships, cool big bads, spirit detective shenaningans, youkai, and of course, battle tournaments!
Watched it dubbed, of course (except for the specials, since they weren't dubbed here). The series was in my watchlist for years but I guess knowing there would be "new" content is always a good push, which brings me to:
Tumblr media
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 (2023)
Live-action adaption of the first 2(!!) arcs. A pleasant surprise! The biggest problem here is definetely that it's too short. There's other flaws too, sure, but still! I had my doubts but turns out I really liked it, overall positive impression. I really hope they make more in the future!
I've watched it twice, once dubbed and once subbed!

Note
So I've been slowly recognizing you as the magical girl tumblr person (because of the Sailor Moon obvi but also your Madoka Magica posts). So I'm curious what's your thought on some other magical girl series like Cardcaptor Sakura and Tokyo Mew Mew (is this an excuse to get more recs... maybe)
Aww, thank you for saying that! It’s cool that my blog is recognizable.
I have not yet seen Cardcaptor Sakura, although it’s on my list! It looks super cute. I also hadn’t seen Tokyo Mew Mew until my friend and I started watching the reboot anime, and I really like it! The characters are very likable and cute, and despite not being a romance person I do like the romantic subplot between Ichigo and Aoyoma. The reboot anime only covers half of the manga so far (with the second half coming out in April) but I can tell this is probably gonna be a magical girl series I recommend to a lot of people.
Ojamajo Doremi is another magical girl series I really like. It's styled more after older magical girl shows (where the girls mainly use their powers to help themselves and the people around them) instead of the "magical girl warrior" style revolutionized by Sailor Moon. It's really cute and fluffy, but also tackles serious issues (pretty well, I might add) every now and then.
Yuki Yuna is a Hero and Princess Tutu are on the darker side of the genre, but I enjoyed them both and would highly recommend them (especially if you liked Madoka Magica).
Mermaid Melody is a very underrated series that isn't the best magical girl series out there, but it's very cute and the songs are bangers. And of course, there's Precure! Out of the Precure series I've seen, I would personally recommend Tropical Rouge Precure, Hugtto! Precure, and Star Twinkle Precure (I've also heard Go! Princess Precure and Heartcatch Precure are very good, although I haven't seen them).
