Selected Works from Zheng Xie
Zheng Xie, a remarkable figure in Chinese art history, was a talented painter, calligrapher, and poet known for his depictions of orchids, bamboo, and stones and his social consciousness. Born into poverty, he was adamant in his support of others facing the same struggle, even at the expense of his own position and status. After he became a magistrate in Shandong, he eventually found himself critical of life as an official. His refusal to fawn over his superiors and the criticism he later faced after building a shelter for houseless people left too deep a scar on him and led to his resignation after over a decade of work.
After his departure, he found himself deeply entrenched in his art. His art and calligraphy captured the essence of the natural world, blending meticulous brushwork with a profound appreciation for the beauty of his surroundings. He is known today for his repeated use of orchids, bamboo, and stones in his paintings. Orchids were, in fact, such a common motif in his work that they influenced the style of calligraphy he created. He called his style “six-and-a-half script.” It was a sort of hybrid script in every way; blunt but fluid, formal yet clerical, cursive and semicursive. He eventually became one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou and even worked as an official calligrapher and painter for a short time.
He also found an interest in literature and poetry and preferred to write about ordinary people. Although he is most known for his paintings and calligraphy, his poetry is where his love and affection for men come through most clearly.

This elegant 1902 illustration reveals a delicate design for Seto-yaki (瀬戸焼) ceramics, showcasing the refined artistry that flourished during the Meiji era. The composition features a graceful mantis perched on a gourd plant, intertwined with flowing vines and blossoms, all rendered in traditional shades of cobalt blue—a hallmark of Japanese ceramic decoration.
The scalloped edges of the dish design mirror the organic forms found in nature, while the meticulous brushwork captures the fragile beauty of the mantis and the intricate details of the plant’s leaves and tendrils. This balance between form and function reflects the Japanese aesthetic principle of harmony with nature (和), where even everyday objects are infused with artistic elegance.
During the Meiji period, Seto-yaki gained international recognition for its versatility and exquisite craftsmanship. Artisans not only preserved traditional techniques but also embraced new influences from abroad, resulting in designs that appealed to both domestic and global audiences.
Imagine this design coming to life in porcelain—its delicate blue hues glowing softly under a clear glaze, transforming a simple dish into a timeless piece of art. 🌿✨

PRINCESS TARAKANOVA | 1864 | by KONSTANTIN FLAVITSKY
The painting is a powerful and dramatic work that has become an iconic representation of the legend surrounding an 18th-century adventurer and her tragic end. The painting depicts the final moments of PRINCESS TARAKANOVA, who claimed to be the daughter of EMPRESS ELIZABETH PETROVNA and a pretender to the RUSSIAN throne.
The composition immediately draws the viewer's attention to the central figure of PRINCESS TARAKANOVA. She is depicted as a striking and enigmatic woman, her piercing gaze conveying a sense of defiance and resignation in the face of her captivity. Dressed in tattered garments, her physical appearance reflects the harsh conditions of her confinement.
The dungeon is shrouded in darkness, with only a faint glimmer of light illuminating the scene. This contrast creates a sense of isolation and despair, emphasizing the hopelessness of the princess's situation.
FLAVITSKY'S attention to detail is evident in the meticulous rendering of PRINCESS TARAKANOVA'S surroundings. The crumbling walls and chains that bind her serve as powerful symbols of her imprisonment and the oppression she endured. The artist's skillful brushwork captures the texture of the stone walls and the fabric of the princess's clothing, adding to the realism and emotional impact of the scene.
Symbolically, the painting can be interpreted as a commentary on the consequences of ambition and political intrigue. PRINCESS TARAKANOVA'S ill-fated attempt to claim the RUSSIAN throne ultimately led to her downfall and imprisonment. Her solitary figure serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of power struggles and political machinations.

The Storm on the Sea of Galilee
Artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669)
Genre: Religious Painting
Date: 1633
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Movement: Dutch Golden Age
Location: Unknown Since 1990
Rembrandt’s most striking narrative painting in America, Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee, is also his only painted seascape. Dated 1633, it was made shortly after Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam from his native Leiden, when he was establishing himself as the city’s leading painter of portraits and historical subjects. The detailed rendering of the scene, the figures’ varied expressions, the relatively polished brushwork, and the bright coloring are characteristic of Rembrandt’s early style. Eighteenth-century critics like Arnold Houbraken often preferred this early period to Rembrandt’s later, broader, and less descriptive manner.
The biblical scene pitches nature against human frailty – both physical and spiritual. The panic-stricken disciples struggle against a sudden storm, and fight to regain control of their fishing boat as a huge wave crashes over its bow, ripping the sail and drawing the craft perilously close to the rocks in the left foreground. One of the disciples succumbs to the sea’s violence by vomiting over the side. Amidst this chaos, only Christ, at the right, remains calm, like the eye of the storm. Awakened by the disciples’ desperate pleas for help, he rebukes them: “Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?” and then rises to calm the fury of wind and waves. Nature’s upheaval is both cause and metaphor for the terror that grips the disciples, magnifying the emotional turbulence and thus the image’s dramatic impact.
The painting showcases the young Rembrandt’s ability not only to represent a sacred history, but also to seize our attention and immerse us in an unfolding pictorial drama. For greatest immediacy, he depicted the event as if it were a contemporary scene of a fishing boat menaced by a storm. The spectacle of darkness and light formed by the churning seas and blackening sky immediately attracts our attention. We then become caught up in the disciples’ terrified responses, each meticulously characterized to encourage and sustain prolonged, empathetic looking. Only one figure looks directly out at us as he steadies himself by grasping a rope and holds onto his cap. His face seems familiar from Rembrandt’s self-portraits, and as his gaze fixes on ours we recognize that we have become imaginative participants in the painter’s vivid dramatization of a disaster Christ is about to avert.

Jesus Calms the Storm
"That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

ARTWORK
Georges Seurat
Final Study for "Bathers at Asnières", 1883
Chicago Institute of Art
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6b6d4502fbfe66b84152142b2abeaf0e/345f0bdade0fe439-ff/s540x810/ab752eb618da1b54510c94bcbbd06d01ed3e1094.jpg)
Georges Seurat made this painting as the last of several preparatory works for his monumental Bathers at Asnières, now in the National Gallery, London. The artist carefully researched and planned each study to perfect the composition before starting on the final canvas. The work adopts the Impressionists' interest in subjects from modern life, showing men and boys on the bank of the Seine River in Asnières, a working-class Parisian suburb.
It is also painted with the airy brushwork associated with Impressionism, but the multiple studies and intense planning foreshadowed the meticulous pointillist style the artist developed for his best-known work, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte—1884 (also on view in this gallery).
What I connect with…
I studied this in art history, lovely seeing this preliminary sketch, as well Seurat's other works in this collection.

"Vanitas still-life with Frog and Lizard in a Landscape"
by Johann Philipp (?) von Purgau (1678-1754)
Oil on copper plate, 12.1 × 19 cm (with frame): 17 × 23.5 × 2 cm, 1 kg
Technique:
Given the absence of concrete information about Johann Philipp von Purgau's specific painting "Vanitas still-life with Frog and Lizard in a Landscape," the ensuing discussion is largely hypothetical and aims to offer a framework for evaluating his style, mediums, and techniques in the context of 18th-century Austrian art and the art of his uncle(/brother?).
Overview
The painting, an oil on copper plate, carries the tradition of "Vanitas" and "nature piece" genres, melding them together to provide both aesthetic pleasure and allegorical resonance. Vanitas paintings often involve symbols of mortality or transient life, like skulls, clocks, or rotting fruit. And this work is no exception. Combining this with a nature piece that showcases living creatures creates a unique dichotomy between life and death.
Paint Application and Color Palette
Given the period and von Purgau's adherence to Dutch influences, we can expect a rich yet restrained color palette. Dark earthy tones for the background and brighter, more vivid colors for the flora and fauna might dominate. The copper plate medium allows for intricate detailing, likely manifesting in meticulous brushwork to render textures like the frog's skin or the lizard's scales.
Technique Type
Being influenced by Otto Marseus van Schrieck, it's plausible that von Purgau would employ the "sotto in su" technique, where objects are viewed from a lower perspective as if looking up. This might be particularly effective in the representation of overhanging foliage or tall grasses.
Atmosphere
The painting achieves a sense of tranquility but with an undertone of foreboding, a common trait in Vanitas paintings. This ambience is delivered through the precise modulation of light and shadow, directing the viewer's focus toward the painting's principal subjects—the Skull and flowers, before circling around the entire piece back to the frog.
Perspective
While there is no linear perspective, there is an atmospheric perspective. The lightness of the dull blues of the mountains gives the impression of depth, aided by the stark contrasting tones of the foreground.
Color Theory
Considering the vanitas elements, a measured interplay between warm and cool colors leads the eye around the painting. The cooler and darker tones lead the eye to skip over details in the initial viewing, only to be seem the second go around. The most prominent figure, the skull, provides the eye with a point of focus, which then leads the visual flow over to the horizon line.
Proportions
The painting adheres to traditional proportions, seemingly guided by the Golden Ratio, to place key objects at focal points, achieving an aesthetically pleasing balance and harmony within the composition.
Texture
The copper plate's smooth surface would allow for the application of thin, even layers, facilitating the creation of nuanced textures. Brush strokes would appear upon close inspection within gradients. The dabbing of light paint for highlights would likely contain the most texture.
Transitions
Soft transitions in light and tone would be expected, with calculated contrasts employed to add drama or focus. Chiaroscuro might be used to give the piece volume and depth, while keeping the eye continuously moving across the tableau.
Focal Points
The frog and lizard, coupled with any vanitas elements like a skull or timepiece, would serve as the primary focal points. Their placement would likely align with key intersections if the painting were divided using the Rule of Thirds.
Symbolism
The frog and lizard, often viewed as transitional creatures (aquatic to terrestrial, reptile to mammal), could symbolize the transient nature of life, well-suited to the vanitas theme. Other elements like overripe fruit or wilting flowers could serve as additional symbols of the fleeting nature of earthly existence.
Layering
Given the complexity of subjects and the possible play between light and shadow, multiple layers of paint would be indispensable. These layers, when observed closely, would reveal themselves as integral to the work's depth and texture, providing a richness that invites closer scrutiny. This being said, the copper plate would allow for the paint to lay smoothly on its surface. The texture would likely be faint.

Above is the image I used for my analysis. Here, I have highlighted my eye's journey across the work in green. I used to pink lines to denote reinforcing lines and form and lavender lines to show reinforcing areas of contrast.
For a lot of Purgau's history, I have had to speculate based on his uncle or brother (Their connection is unknown). This family member is very likely who taught him to paint, and there are records of them working on paintings together. The elder von Purgau, active primarily in the first half of the 18th century, specialized in the meticulous painting of still lifes, particularly those depicting natural scenes often referred to as "forest floors" or "nature pieces." These works typically exhibited a microcosm of the natural world, containing an assortment of wildflowers, thistles, and small creatures like frogs, lizards, toads, and snakes.
Stylistically, the elder von Purgau was influenced by the Dutch painter Otto Marseus van Schrieck, who was known for inventing this specific genre of painting. This stylistic orientation falls under the larger umbrella of Baroque art, with a focus on realism, intricate detail, and dramatic lighting. However, his paintings diverged somewhat from the opulence and grandeur commonly associated with the Baroque, as he employed a restrained, contemplative approach that captured the intimate intricacies of nature.
As for technique, his medium of choice was oil on copper plate. The use of copper as a substrate suggests an interest in longevity and durability, as copper is less susceptible to environmental degradation compared to canvas or wood. Additionally, copper plates offer a smooth surface that allows for fine detailing, an essential element in the highly intricate still lifes for which he was known.
Von Purgau also exhibited a mastery over the treatment of light and shadow, adding depth and drama to his compositions. While specific details about his techniques are scant, the level of realism and detail in his work implies a deep understanding of color mixing, layering, and perhaps even glazing to achieve luminosity and depth.
He also held the role of a conservator or restorer, especially around the area of Linz, including contributions at the Monastery of St. Florian. This aspect of his career suggests a broader understanding of art materials, techniques, and preservation methods, which may have informed his own artistic practices.
Although specific art techniques are not explicitly documented, his skill set would have likely included techniques relevant to the era and the still life genre, such as chiaroscuro for capturing the nuances of light and shadow, and tenebrism for emphasizing dramatic contrasts between light and dark.
Thus, the elder von Purgau's art style and techniques can be described as a nuanced blend of Baroque realism, enriched by a focus on natural details and enhanced by a masterful command of light, all executed primarily in the enduring medium of oil on copper plate.
History
Johann Philipp von Purgau, born in 1681 in Linz, Austria, emerges as an enigmatic figure in the record of art history, primarily because of the scant information available about his life and works. His oeuvre specialized in bird and hunting still-lifes, yet much of what is known about him is occluded by the more pronounced legacy of a close relative, likely his uncle, also named Johann Philipp von Purgau (1678–1754). This familial connection offers a lens through which we can infer aspects of the younger von Purgau’s artistic inclinations and possible training.
The older von Purgau was a renowned Austrian painter who gained acclaim for his detailed still-lifes, often set on forest floors replete with wildflowers, thistles, and small fauna such as frogs and lizards. Active primarily in Linz for most of his career, he later relocated to Vienna. Known for his work in oil on copper plate, he was an esteemed conservator, notably contributing to restorations at the Monastery of St. Florian near Linz. Given his reputation and the overlap in their lifetimes and localities, it is plausible that the younger von Purgau's artistic path was influenced or even directly mentored by his older relative.
The elder von Purgau was deeply inspired by artists like Otto Marseus van Schrieck and Carl Wilhelm de Hamilton, pioneers in the domain of nature pieces. This lineage of stylistic influence could have trickled down to shape the younger von Purgau's own predilections for natural subject matter, albeit focusing more specifically on bird and hunting scenes rather than forest floors. Such thematic focus on birds and hunting scenes would resonate with the era’s penchant for capturing intricate details of nature, an aesthetic element notably prevalent in the works of the older von Purgau as well.
While the older von Purgau's roles as both an artist and a conservator underscore his community standing, little is known about the younger von Purgau's societal engagements or patronage. The elder's affiliations with religious institutions, especially monasteries around Linz, may suggest that the younger von Purgau might have had similar avenues of patronage or at least had the opportunity to learn the mechanisms of ecclesiastical commissions and conservation from his older relative.
The younger von Purgau remained active until at least 1720, and the paucity of information beyond that year leaves much of his life obscured. It is conceivable that he, like his older relative, might have eventually migrated to a larger artistic hub like Vienna, although records do not confirm this.
In summary, the life and works of Johann Philipp von Purgau remains largely elusive. Nevertheless, the career and stylistic orientations of his older relative offer insights that may shed light on his own artistic endeavors. While his own focus diverged into the realms of bird and hunting still lifes, the family's shared affinity for capturing nature in meticulous detail serves as a connecting thread that might help illuminate the obscured contours of his artistic journey.
Time Period/Anthropology:
The early 18th century was a critical period in the history of Linz, Austria, situated within the larger context of the Holy Roman Empire and, more specifically, the Archduchy of Austria. This period was marked by complexities in sociopolitical, economic, religious, and cultural domains, factors that played an instrumental role in shaping the lives of its inhabitants, including figures like Johann Philipp von Purgau.
Sociopolitical Climate
During this time, the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714) was a seminal event that impacted not only the balance of power in Europe but also the sociopolitical milieu of Linz. Although Linz was not directly a battlefield, the war had repercussions on the local populace. Soldiers would often pass through the city or be stationed there temporarily, leading to a transient surge in population that strained local resources. Additionally, this period also saw an intensification of feudal obligations for serfs, many of whom were required to offer more extensive labor services to their feudal lords, both for economic sustenance and military needs.
In 1705-1706, the Bavarian Rummel uprising reached Linz, although its impact was limited compared to other regions. This event exemplified the latent dissatisfaction among the commoners against the feudal system and was symptomatic of the larger sociopolitical unrest. It was a time of changing political allegiances and border recalibrations, where local autonomy often came into conflict with imperial aspirations.
Economic Climate
Economically, Linz was in a period of gradual transformation. The city was a regional hub for trade, particularly in salt, grain, and timber. The Danube River served as a vital artery for trade, connecting Linz with markets in both Western and Eastern Europe. However, war and subsequent troop movements often disrupted trade routes, leading to periods of economic stagnation. These interruptions would have affected everyone's daily life, from the merchants whose livelihoods depended on stable trade, to the commoners who faced price inflations for essential goods.
During this period, Linz also saw a rise in artisanal crafts, a sign of nascent industrialization. However, the guild system remained entrenched, often making it difficult for new innovations to take root. Artisanal crafts like painting and restoration were tied into this economic system, offering opportunities for figures like the von Purgau family to practice their art, although likely within restrictive parameters set by guilds and patrons.
Religious Climate
Religiously, the region was predominantly Catholic, a legacy of the Counter-Reformation. The influence of the Catholic Church was ubiquitous, shaping education, art, and social services. Monasteries and religious institutions were significant landowners and wielded considerable power. These institutions often commissioned artworks and served as repositories for art and culture, which likely provided opportunities for artists like von Purgau.
However, the period was also marked by a religious thaw, with the Protestant minority enjoying a modicum of toleration. The Peace of Westphalia (1648) had already set a precedent for religious coexistence, but the constant state of war and political flux had delayed its full implementation. By the early 18th century, though, some level of religious plurality was evident even if Catholicism remained the dominant force.
Cultural Climate
Culturally, Linz was influenced by both Italian and Dutch artistic traditions. The influx of ideas was facilitated by trade as well as by the movements of artists and scholars. Dutch influence was particularly strong in genres like still life and landscape painting, evidenced by von Purgau’s artistic influences. The period was also marked by an interest in natural sciences, with "cabinets of curiosities" being popular among the educated elite. These collections often included paintings of natural scenes, providing another avenue for artists specializing in such subjects.
Baroque architecture and art were the dominant styles, emphasizing grandiosity, emotional intensity, and intricate detail. These stylistic choices were not merely aesthetic but were laden with ideological and religious undertones. For instance, the exuberance of Baroque art was often seen as an extension of the Church's triumphalist narrative, celebrating its role as the true path to spiritual salvation.
Everyday Impact
The lives of Linz's residents during this period would have been affected by these larger forces. The constant state of war meant that men were frequently conscripted, leaving women to manage households and even businesses. The high tax levies to fund the war led to increased poverty and food scarcity. The influence of the Church meant that religious festivals and obligations were a regular part of life, providing both spiritual solace and, at times, a burden of orthodoxy.
The economic emphasis on trade meant that many families were involved in mercantile activities, even if only tangentially. For the artisan class, this era offered opportunities but within a tightly regulated framework that dictated what could be produced and sold. For artists like von Purgau, this meant that their livelihoods were closely tied to the patronage of religious institutions and the nobility, who dictated both form and content.
In summary, Linz in the early 18th century was a city caught in the crosscurrents of European geopolitics, economic transformation, religious orthodoxy, and cultural flux. These macroscopic changes trickled down to affect every aspect of daily life, from the food people ate, the work they did, to the art they produced and consumed. It was a period of both constraint and opportunity, shaping the lives and works of its residents in profound ways.
Personal Note:
Finding information on this artist was a tribulation! I wrote assuming that his family member was the one who taught him to paint, considering the similarities between their subject matter and mediums. The era of Vanitas, or "Memento Mori" artwork is a favorite of mine, and I found this research to be very engaging.

Led by Akira Toriyama, These Ten Japanese Manga Artists Have Each Changed the World!
The influence and popularity of Japanese manga in the entire anime industry are evident to fans. Not only that, but some well-known manga have also gained worldwide acclaim, and many people have spent their childhoods accompanied by Japanese manga.
In this talented pool of Japanese manga artists, there emerged one outstanding artist after another. They soared to the top with a few outstanding works, and the foreign media outlet WatchMojo selected the top ten Japanese manga artists who have influenced the world. These are all well-known figures. Let's take a look at who they are.
Akira Toriyama Even among the many talented Japanese manga artists, I believe Akira Toriyama stands out as the top. His representative work, "Dragon Ball," is renowned worldwide and has a broad influence in many countries. Moreover, Toriyama-sensei not only draws manga but has also done character designs for many games. His designs for characters and monsters in the Japanese game series "Dragon Quest" are still deeply ingrained in people's minds. His influence is definitely not limited to just manga; especially in the 1990s, he was a leader in the popularity of animation. In Japan, "Dragon Ball" is hailed as a "national manga" and is the best-selling manga in Japan. Toriyama's high acclaim is due to a series of achievements that are hard to surpass. In 1983, when he serialized "Dr. Slump," he set the record for the highest tax paid by a manga artist, amounting to "640,745,000 yen," a record that remains unbroken to this day. Although Osamu Tezuka is the pioneer of Japanese manga, considering Toriyama's achievements, I still rank him first. Akira Toriyama can be considered a representative of an era, a legendary figure.

Osamu Tezuka Following Akira Toriyama is Osamu Tezuka, whose name is known to all. Some say, "If you haven't heard of Osamu Tezuka, it's like not knowing that manga exists in this world." In 1947, he laid the foundation for the narrative style of Japanese manga with the manga "New Treasure Island," establishing the ideological consciousness of Japanese manga and greatly expanding the expressive power of new manga. He can be called the founding father of Japanese manga. In 1952, his work "Astro Boy" caused a sensation in Japan. This intelligent, brave, and just little robot boy was loved by almost everyone. It created a huge wave worldwide and is considered the first recognized shōjo manga in the world. His manga work "Phoenix" is still widely regarded as the masterpiece of Japanese manga. Other works such as "Black Jack" and "Jungle Emperor" are also well-known works. His position in the manga world is at the level of a presidential mountain

Rumiko Takahashi Fans of "Ranma 1/2" and "Inuyasha" will certainly not be unfamiliar with this talented manga artist. While everyone is flocking to science fiction, studying psychoanalysis, or rushing into the rapidly growing field of BL, Takahashi is still calmly weaving her own dreams. Her superb skill in drawing and meticulous brushwork can indeed be called "Takahashi manga." For a highly popular author, selling over a billion copies of a single volume is not an impossible task (in Japan's manga industry, there are at least several every decade), but the difficulty lies in maintaining an excellent standard while being prolific. There are few people who can do this, and Takahashi-sensei is one of them. Both "Urusei Yatsura," "Maison Ikkoku," and "Ranma 1/2" have sold over 100 million copies, and although the sales of "Inuyasha" have declined compared to the former, it still maintains a high level.

Yoshihiro Togashi The fact that Yoshihiro Togashi can be ranked here is mainly due to the incredible success of "Slam Dunk." The impact of SD on reality is even greater than the work itself. Yoshihiro's "Slam Dunk" was extremely popular at the time, setting off a basketball craze in Japan and Southeast Asia. Even those who don't play basketball would be inspired by the peers in the work who are striving for their dreams, which can be said to be the charm of "Slam Dunk." In the later part of the work, everyone hoped that Slam Dunk would continue without ending, just like "Captain Tsubasa," but Yoshihiro is a person with his own ideas. In the end, Shohoku miraculously defeated Sannoh but lost to the next opponent. This unexpected ending may have ended such a legendary manga in a way that left us with a fantasy.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/512fa318220769a691308dde8ef1e827/a169a126852fca3e-03/s500x750/1949ea71e3741a8868b53bbbcb0bd9f0df590aea.jpg)
Yoshihiro Togashi After the massive success of "Yu Yu Hakusho," he solidified his position as one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" of Weekly Shonen Jump. After marrying Naoko Takeuchi, they became the wealthiest couple in the Japanese manga industry, making him a winner in life. However, he is quite a headache for many. He often stops drawing "Hunter x Hunter" without notice, even causing trouble for the editors of Weekly Shonen Jump, who have also dealt with famous creators like Masami Kurumada, Takehiko Inoue, and Hirohiko Araki. Despite his occasional hiatuses and unannounced breaks, he is truly a genius and deserves the title of a master of Japanese manga! In 1990, his most representative work, "Yu Yu Hakusho," caused an unprecedented sensation, with its TV anime and related products becoming the hottest topics of the time. After the serialization of "Yu Yu Hakusho" ended, following half a year of recharging, the famous "LEVEL E" was born. Currently, his latest work, "Hunter × Hunter," is still ongoing, once again proving Togashi's talent!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/df2e9780be8cad556aaff8c792a8219a/a169a126852fca3e-34/s500x750/01452c9ddf0c08080889ac6ee5ed862b26128017.jpg)
Fujiko F. Fujio In 1969, Doraemon was first serialized as a long manga by Shogakukan. Since then, this adorable robotic cat has become increasingly popular among a wide audience. When the first Doraemon anime aired in Japan in 1979, it immediately sparked a Doraemon craze across Japan. Today, Doraemon is a childhood memory for many people, a symbol of an era. His related works continue to be in the spotlight, with even a nostalgic theatrical release attracting a large audience. This is enough to prove his influence, and his placement here is a testament to his strength.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/85a63e12419ae7395edcaba23d289588/a169a126852fca3e-39/s500x750/e5fbe35cd6a0c040ee44dafdc6c3f571cb219a9a.jpg)
Eiichiro Oda Compared to the above-mentioned artists, Eiichiro Oda is relatively newer to the scene. The immense popularity of "One Piece" has solidified his position. As older but excellent manga like "Dragon Ball" gradually left the stage of Weekly Shonen Jump, and with declining enthusiasm from readers leading to a decrease in weekly sales, "One Piece" has maintained sales of over 7 million copies, making Oda a savior of the new era of manga! "One Piece" is currently at its peak, and fans are eagerly anticipating its future storylines. Among the "Big Three" of the manga world, with the other two being "Naruto," which has already concluded, and "Bleach," which has waned in popularity, "One Piece" can be said to be the final glory of youth and passion, passing on that fiery spirit.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/425c58aca73150aa54b440911037d12e/a169a126852fca3e-2f/s500x750/775f9d5a58d8807f510b3f284bb06c87d5d6ecfb.jpg)
Ai Yazawa Ai Yazawa, a female manga artist in her forties, is a name even those unfamiliar with shojo manga have likely heard of. Works like "Paradise Kiss," "Nana," and "Nana 2" are all her creations. Especially with "Nana," which began serialization in 2000 and was later adapted into live-action films and anime, it sparked a "Nana" craze in Southeast Asia. With the birth of "Nana," shojo manga entered a new era.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/340d562bd7e844d6302bf90cd161db96/a169a126852fca3e-3a/s500x750/de1b2546a93d6c8551f19309d6948c78c738a87a.jpg)
Masami Kurumada's "Saint Seiya" (all 28 volumes) was selected as one of the "15 Classic Masterpieces in Japan in the 20th Century" by the famous Japanese publisher Shueisha. "Fist of the North Star: Genesis of Next Century II" (one volume) was selected by Shueisha as one of the "14 Most Exciting Classic Battle Scrolls in Japan in the 20th Century." In my childhood, playing and laughing with classmates, the shouts of "My Cosmo is burning!" "Pegasus Meteor Fist!" "Rozan Rising Dragon Punch!" still echo in my ears. Its character design was also unique.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/71fd3418cef1fa1d9c29af08f882d760/a169a126852fca3e-8c/s500x750/45558a459568d62f5276b13b539390ee7474624d.jpg)
Masashi Kishimoto, standing among so many greats, can only barely make the list. Surely, everyone is familiar with "Naruto." Influenced by works like "Dragon Ball," "Akira," "Fist of the North Star," "Doraemon," and "Yu Yu Hakusho" in his early years, he admired industry predecessors like Akira Toriyama, Katsuhiro Otomo, Fujiko F. Fujio, Yoshihiro Togashi, and Tsukasa Hojo. Despite setbacks in the development of "Naruto," it remains an excellent manga, leaving an indelible mark on our youth.

Brushstrokes of Time: An AI Ode to Renaissance Visionaries
These #ai images pay tribute to the creative legacies of Hieronymus Bosch, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Raphael, Titian, Albrecht Dürer, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The term "ode" conveys a poetic celebration, emphasizing the reverence and admiration for the artists' collective vision and artistic achievements.
Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516): Bosch, a Dutch painter, was known for his unique and fantastical imagery that often explored religious and moral themes. His technical mastery was evident in the intricate details of his paintings, such as "The Garden of Earthly Delights" and "The Temptation of St. Anthony." Bosch's ability to create bizarre and imaginative scenes, filled with symbolic elements, set him apart as a master of the Northern Renaissance, showcasing his technical skill in creating complex and otherworldly compositions. His influence extended beyond his lifetime, inspiring generations of artists and admirers.
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519): Leonardo is often considered one of the greatest painters of all time. His technical mastery extended to various fields, including painting, sculpture, anatomy, and engineering. He was renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, realistic portrayal of human anatomy, and innovative techniques such as sfumato (a technique of blending colors and tones).
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564): Michelangelo was a versatile artist known for his contributions to painting, sculpture, and architecture. His frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City showcase his extraordinary skill in depicting the human form with dynamic poses and dramatic lighting.
Raphael (1483–1520): Raphael was celebrated for his harmonious compositions, graceful figures, and a sense of ideal beauty. His paintings, such as "The School of Athens," reflect his mastery in creating balanced and aesthetically pleasing compositions.
Titian (c. 1488–1576): An influential Venetian painter, Titian was a master of color and texture. His use of rich, vibrant colors and innovative brushwork contributed to the development of the Venetian school of painting. Titian's works, including portraits and mythological scenes, are known for their emotional intensity.
Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528): Dürer, a German artist, was a master of both painting and printmaking. His detailed and precise engravings and woodcuts showcased his technical skill, and his paintings, such as "Self-Portrait at Twenty-Eight," demonstrated a keen understanding of light and shadow.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569): Known for his detailed and panoramic landscapes, Bruegel was a Flemish painter who excelled in capturing scenes of daily life. His works, such as "The Tower of Babel" and "The Harvesters," showcase his technical prowess in rendering intricate details and atmospheric effects.
These artists, among others, left an indelible mark on the art world through their technical mastery, innovative techniques, and contributions to the Renaissance ideals of humanism and naturalism.

"The Rebel Angel" by Angie Taylor
In the world of modern art, Angie Taylor’s “The Rebel Angel” emerges as a strikingly evocative piece, combining both traditional and contemporary artistic techniques. At first glance, the artwork immediately captivates its viewers with its vibrant and fiery color palette, and upon closer inspection, Taylor's meticulous attention to detail becomes evident.
Composition & Color:
The piece is dominated by a brilliant amalgamation of gold, crimson, and amber hues. These fiery shades not only set the emotional tone of the piece but also effectively draw the viewer’s attention towards the central figure – the eponymous "Rebel Angel." The use of warm colors, especially the gold that swirls around the figure, creates a sensation of movement, as though the angel herself is emanating this radiant energy. Such a choice might symbolize the angel's rebellion, setting her apart from her surroundings and emphasizing her individuality.
Central Figure:
The Rebel Angel, portrayed with wings outstretched and hands posed expressively, becomes the focal point. The multi-hued feather-like structures adorning her head resemble a crown or headdress, which could be symbolic of his regal or divine nature. Taylor has masterfully painted the character with a combination of realism and abstraction, allowing for an open interpretation. The decision to depict the angel with realistic human facial features juxtaposed with a somewhat surreal body resonates deeply, suggesting a bridge between the earthly and the ethereal.
Texture & Technique:
The textured background contrasts with the smoother depiction of the angel, adding depth to the piece. The artist's brushwork in the background, with its rough and almost turbulent strokes, creates an environment that seems to be in flux, possibly reflecting the chaos or upheaval associated with rebellion. In contrast, the smoother, more detailed rendering of the angel suggests clarity amidst this chaos.
Symbolism:
The choice of title, "The Rebel Angel," immediately alludes to themes of dissent, individuality, and possibly a fall from grace. By placing this figure against a fiery backdrop, Taylor might be hinting at the angel's daring nature, his courage to stand against the norm, or possibly a transformation. The duality of the angel's appearance – both powerful and vulnerable – adds layers of interpretation, making the piece a rich tapestry of symbolism.
Conclusion:
Angie Taylor's "The Rebel Angel" is a testament to her ability to blend traditional art concepts with a modern twist. Through her intricate detailing, thoughtful symbolism, and masterful use of color, she has created a piece that not only draws the eye but also engages the mind. It stands as a compelling representation of rebellion, divinity, and the eternal struggle between conformity and individuality. In an academic setting, this work would undoubtedly ignite discussions about its themes, techniques, and the emotions it evokes, making it a notable contribution to the contemporary art scene.
This piece is currently on show in the Shikantaza Secrets 001 Exhibition, details can be found here:
Note: We'd originally sexed the Angel as a she, but Angie has informed us it is a he, so we have edited the above article accordingly!

INKTOBER INSPIRATION 1
"The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy you with all good things, and keep you healthy too; and you will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring."
~ Isaiah 58:11 LB (The Living Bible)
It has been quite some time since I participated in the Inktober challenge. It is one of the most intricate pen and ink drawings I have ever created. It's influenced by engravings, Renaissance paintings, pen and ink artworks, and comic page inking. The artworks stand out due to their unique compositions, symbolic imagery, and meticulous brushwork. For this reason, I started Inktober in 2016 and even used it as a means of creating interesting panels in my comics.
Most of the influences I mentioned earlier revolve around religion. This is the reason behind my decision to focus on Christian artwork. The scripture in this piece was inspired by a frame featuring a waterfall painting and a Bible verse. Instead of the usual waterfall concept, I included a woman and a hand to symbolize the verse's message.
In addition. Next week will probably be the final Inktober artwork posted (Clue: In relation to Pre-colonial Philippines) More updates are coming soon.
Drawn using micron pens on an A3 sketch paper.

This vibrant painted portrait depicts a young girl exuding confidence and grace, her exquisite afro hair an emblem of her identity and strength.
The artist's meticulous brushwork captures the intricate textures and dynamic volume of her hair, which cascades outward like a glorious crown. The girl's expressive eyes are windows to her soul, reflecting a mixture of determination and introspection.
