I am in a weird place. I can count on one finger the number of times I have had to figuratively send an arrow directly into someone’s heart before. This went down before the advent of technology, but it was still as impersonal and hurtful as it could be. One arrow. Fast forward 17 years, past a failed marriage and several failed relationships; here I was again. I had given up on finding a decent partner, and meant to go have fun. I then found two different, fantastic individuals I could envision a future with- within a week of each other. And then I realized that to make it work with one, I’d had to modify my communication and attention requirements. I’d have to be okay with sparseness in both electronic and direct attention. And I am not someone who is satisfied with one or two messages a day from my person. I’m not okay with seeing them only once a week. I know this about myself. And yes, I can manage in that vein for a while, but not for long. And especially not when it’s new. I thought about how perhaps forcing myself to be okay with less attention from my person would be healthy in some sense- I knew I would only end up resenting my partner and watch that manifest in several, undesirable ways. I knew how much I felt for this person already because I form attachments quickly and deeply, and it made it that much more difficult for me to release another arrow into what I hoped would be a lasting, fun, healthy pairing. And I forced myself to do it. Before more energy and time were invested, I sent that arrow through my blurred, salted, drowned vision where it needed to go. And it stung. It still does. I’ve never voluntarily let go of someone I saw potential with. Except I’m now old, and I understand myself well. That’s what happens when you date yourself. And I was reminded that I can not mute who I am, or compromise on my basic needs again. I already know how doing that plays out. So the arrow was spent. And as this one was released from the bow, an edge of it caught my ungloved finger and drew blood. So, I’m wrapping the cut with a fresh square of gauze daily, until it heals.
