Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia, hirta) is blooming all across Maryland this month. No big surprise, since in 1918 it became the Official State Flower of Maryland (Happy Centennial!). It is evocative of the Calvert Black and Gold portions of the Maryland State Flag. * It’s a striking addition to a butterfly garden. It grows readily from seed and is hearty and drought resistant. And it’s traditionally considered a symbol of Justice, impartiality, and encouragement.
