Whenever Raiden does something fucked up in Revengance it’s like, rest in rip Solidus you would have pogged to see this
#genuinely wish those two could meet again the emotions would be so thick and rancid#wg speaks#metalgearposting#i know i said I don’t care about the comic but that’s not true i just think some of the ideas it had with raiden’s characterization#were contradicted later by the actual canon#but they REALLY amp up how verbally affectionate solidus is to jack#which i fuckin love#and like.. it really gives off the impression that he still sees him as a child#anyway. i wonder if that kind of rhetoric would be more effective on him when my mans Regressing#since i am pretty sure that is what’s being implied with the jack the ripper stuff?#and. i know that this wasn’t what was intended because i don’t think they had the rest of his character arc planned out in any game#but it’s really hard for me to not draw a connection between that and the scene in MG4 when he’s clinging to snake’s leg#and if they did combine these elements and took an angle where you could see him being emotionally really immature#it could take jack the ripper from cool to pitiful and id love to see it

Can’t stop thinking about the scene of Rosemary forcing her way into Raiden’s room and finding it almost entirely empty and how devastated she was by that... she just seems to have so much tension weighing on her from being a spy, from realizing that she genuinely cares about this guy but feels he can’t really care about her because she’s only playing a character... Rose yearns to be seen... maybe she even started to resent how he got to just be his authentic self but she couldn’t... and then she sees that room and realize that he wasn’t. He was also just playing a character. Their whole relationship was just a feedback loop of two people trying to be what they think the other wants with the genuine human connection of two chinese rooms having a conversation, but only one of them has noticed...

I was relieved to realize that Raiden speaks through a machine, because that explains why missing his lower lip doesn’t cause him to have a speech impediment… except, it doesn’t. In MGS4, there’s a distinct difference between his normal speech and the more mechanical-sounding speech he produces when he can’t use his mouth… the latter suggests that the machine is something like a loudspeaker, while the former suggests something like an artificial larynx. So that means most of the time, the machine is only supplying his actual voice, while he enunciates everything with his own mouth… even though he doesn’t have a lower lip.
Anyway, I want to imagine that his speech flickers back and forth between his crunchy loudspeaker-voice whenever he hits a consonant that he can’t pronounce with his mouth (B, F, M, P, V, W, etc.)
#anyway that’s why i call the mechanic behind his speech a loudspeaker instead of a voice box…#it’s clearly different than something that just produces tone#wg speaks#metalgearposting#my first hc was that all of his speech was electronic and he’s just lip syncing because it feels natural#but the fact that when hes definitely doing that it sounds different put a wrench in that#but also i love his deep-fried computer voice he should do it more

It’s just so fucked up that Raiden has a son and I’m shocked that no one seems interested in getting into that.
#ive spent like 20 minutes sitting at this post foaming at the mouth and trying to elaborate but it keeps comign out like total nonsense#wg speaks#ask to tag //#metalgearposting#like.#1. like his only frame of reference for a 'normal' childhood is pop culture#and those images to him are as fake and fantastical as kaiju attacks#how the hell can he give that to his kid? going through the gestures with the warmth and familiarity of factory machinery?#2. he represses his own childhood SO hard but now he has to interact with this child. that. looks like he did#he even met john at about the same age as he was when solidus met him#like... he was learning how to handle a gun when he was that small....#how could he possibly avoid being reminded of the things he tries hardest to forget#how could ne see that small face and not feel dread. like he's looking at a past that he's powerless to change#3. well he does actually have a frame of reference for childhood but if he applies it to his own family. he's solidus.#he's gotta be a father when what he knows of a father is that he hurts his children#and god knows he doesnt want to but god he must be scared of the thought that he is. he must feel like a fucking poison#and even if he never does anything wrong its impossible to escape having ANY reminder of what his role is#he'd see john looking up at him with admiration in his eyes and remember when he looked up to his father#and feel like he's dragging this boy straight to hell#he cant be a role model#even if he were 100% sure of his convictions (doubtful) i cant see him not being terrified of john taking after him#tl:do you think raiden gets deja vu
