Day 31: Anomalocaris

I will have to give the ones who found this last specimen all of my respect. Their find was nothing short of incredible, a true wonder to anyone in my field of study. It felt alien. Something between Merm and... something else. I was reminded of shellfish but... not at the same time. Its anatomy made so little sense, I'd hardly believe it real if I wasn't looking at its skeleton at that moment. It and the other two fossils are being moved to the Capital Science Museum for further study. I'm hoping I'll be invited back to take a closer look before it's moved to permanent display. But, at least for now, we've dubbed it the Wonder Skimmer. Something about it touched something deep within me. Something that has the tendency to dull in my age and experience. Curiosity. I encourage each and every one of you, if you have that fire to learn more about the world around you, you seize it. Study all that you can. Find the wonder in the world around you.

Mermay Day 31: Leviathan

As said before, I do not chase myths. But, when a colleague you feel nothing but the deepest respect for summons you on an expedition chasing said myth, you're at the very least curious. Dr. Branston and I, deep in a frozen palace, discovered something quite remarkable. Awe inspiring. She was gargantuan, larger than any Merm I've ever seen, even rivaling some dragons Branston had documented. She was a titan. Branston and I have documented her as a Tidal Titan. I think there was a... frightening intelligence behind her eyes. Like she was going to say something. She never did. But I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of each other in the future.

So, the fact that it's Mermay again hit me about five days ago, so I slapped my forehead and tried to contribute something at least. I had tons of ideas, but the final products were not great… On my tablet, I have about 10 sketches, if not more, and about ten more are waiting in the "To draw later" folder. So maybe you can look forward to a flood of underwater X-Men, or maybe not… with my pace… I also have an AU story for it… but I don't have much hope for its creation…

This is Jean Grey; she's an "ordinary" mermaid of the common mermaid type. Her tail is green, like her costume, and the underwater super algae she uses as a wrap around her chest is yellow, like her costume. The only thing that sets her fin apart from those of ordinary mermaids is the elongated back fin membrane. She is one of the oldest protégés of the lord and master of the seas - Xavier the Professor Fish. For now, she takes care of the well-being of all underwater creatures, but one day she is expected to take over from her "teacher". Everything you need to know about her for now can be gleaned from the dense cluster of words in the top right corner. Most of it is readable, and what isn't will quickly make itself known.

I kid you not—I took a nap today and had a nightmare where mermay had ended, so you opened up 3 commission slots, and I had missed all of them by the time I saw the announcement... it was horrible, and you have no idea how relieved I was when I woke up lmao

I'm still extremely amazed with how you've been able to put out a drawing for every single day. And they all look fantastic to boot. Major kudos!!!

I will be a little sad when this month ends, but I also very much look forward to your creative works for this year's pompep week! :D

Are you telepathic, Puff? Because I was thinking that three would be a perfect number to start with 😮🔮 (Don't worry, I don't think you'll have any problem securing a slot)

I'm honestly amazed I've been able to keep up with daily drawings, too. I'm normally pretty bad when it comes to daily challenges. I didn't even commit to doing anything for mermay until the very last minute, and even then I was like, "I'll do maybe one or two..."

I'm definitely learning a lot. I try something different with every drawing, whether it's lighting or backgrounds or special effects or a new tool or technique. It's really encouraging to see my speed improve, too. I started out doing monochrome sketches because that was all I had the time/energy for, but now I can do a full-color rendered piece with background scenery without doubling my work time. It feels good. I was in an art rut for the longest time, and mermay has really helped drag me out of it.

The only downside is I've had to postpone my writing for the time being, but when May is over I expect I'll be refreshed and ready to get back to it. And yeah, I can't wait for Pompep Week, either! I hope some of the new or returning faces I've seen around here lately will join in and really make this event extra peppy :D
