Prompt:
Arthur’s known about Merlin’s magic almost from the beginning.
When he first discovered it, he tried to warn Merlin, discreetly - commenting on the dangers of magic without addressing Merlin’s magic specifically so he won’t have to arrest him. Over time though, he slowly learns - from Merlin - that magic isn’t all that his father has always claimed.
After this, it becomes a bit of a game to them; Arthur warning Merlin about magic, and Merlin coming up with the most outrageous of stories to try to explain it away.
But then the day comes when Arthur realises that Merlin never knew that Arthur always knew the truth.

people annoyed that merlin would promise to run away with freya and leave everyone behind missing the context of that episode being set right after ‘the sins of the father’, where arthur literally thanked merlin for reminding him that magic was pure evil

If I had magic in canterlot, I would foolishly try to kill Arthur (since the magic ban still exist, what do I have to lose), have the promised savior and liberator of magic kill me, with me spitting at him and calling him a class traitor, and he would move on with his day being gay with the king never thinking about me again. (Wait I forgot about the possibility of the king maybe doubting the ban, and merlin going no no keep magic illegal, magic is evil)
I adore merlin but god I would hate him so much if I lived in that world. There's nuance but a normal person/magic user is not privy to that
no one would have been privy to that knowledge if they were in your shoes, anon 😔
like there is no winning for you because you would die either way and believe your prophesied Emrys betrayed you for a reason you cannot begin to fathom why

The end of the series is very unfulfilling, I don’t understand the writers at all, even if they wanted to make the end a tragedy they could still accomplish that (by having Arthur dying) while giving the fans what they wanted, such as Arthur (and the other people from Camelot) knowing about Merlin’s magic and seeing him perform it, Arthur accepting magic and learning the full extent of what merlin has done for him and Camelot, knowing all that merlin sacrificed (freya, his father, his morals) and at least some episodes showing the golden age we were promised under Arthur’s rule. In the end we didn’t see Arthur becoming the great king they said he would be in season 1, the entirety of merlin and arthur’s relationship in the series was very frustrating and infuriating at times, and the series finale wasn’t nearly satisfying enough.
*spoilers for Merlin kinda*
Literally hate that we have the promise of Merlin being recognized one day for his power and his contribution to the royal family throughout the ENTIRE SHOW and yet. The only recognition he ever gets is when Arthur DIES and he knows about Merlin’s magic. And even then!! HE STILL LIVES IN SECRECY UNTIL MODERN DAY. WHYYYYYYY

My absolute favourite trope in Merlin fanfic is when they all find out about Merlin’s magic and Arthur is brooding or feigning annoyance but truly doesn’t care, Elyan and Gwaine are asking so many questions because they’re so intrigued and need to know absolutely everything and somehow aren’t surprised in the slightest, Leon is weary but slowly indulges in the conversation, eyeing Arthur every so often because he’s nervous to display such behaviours about magic in front of his King but he still knows Arthur would never touch Merlin even if he was afraid and Percival is just so confused because he thought everyone already knew and just refused to speak about it
Merlin: It’s not that big of a deal. we don’t have to speak about it.
Elyan: Oh, no we absolutely do!
Gwaine: Yeah, c’mon Merlin, show us something cool, like money falling from the sky, or a pint in my hand, right now, come on.
Elyan: Can you really do that?
Merlin: *Sarcastically* If it’ll get Gwaine to shut up.
Arthur: Oh, so you can pour Gwaine a pint in the middle of the woods but you can’t clean my chambers?
It goes silent for a few moments, Merlin wonders if now is the right time for a joke but Arthur’s brow is furrowed and through the light of the fire he can see the firm press of lips on his face, he decides now is not the time. Gwaine rolls his eyes from across the flame before them.
Gwaine: He’s just saved all our arses, can you be grateful for two minutes?
Leon: Gwaine-
Merlin: He has every right to be upset-
Arthur: Do not address me as if i’m not even here, you owe me that at least.
There’s a tense silence as Merlin’s hand stills where it pokes at the fire with a stick, Leon eyes the King cautiously and Percival fiddles, wide eyed, with the frayed edges of his tunic. Merlin sighs and focuses again on the fire, it’s the only heat he can find.
Gwaine: What kind of things can you do?
Merlin is hesitant to answer but Elyan looks at him expectantly and even Leon has turned his attention to him now, seemingly awaiting either an answer from the servant or an order from his King.
Merlin: I- I can do small things like move stuff around, tell a broom to sweep or a rag to clean.
He thinks that’s enough but by the excited look in Gwaine and Elyan’s eyes it isn’t.
Merlin: I can light fires, fell trees, sense a nearby threat, anything… really.
Gwaine: That’s so cool
Arthur: So you could’ve been useful this entire time and you chose not to be.
There’s another lull as Arthur picks apart leaves and tosses them into the fire but as Leon speaks up even Arthur turns his gaze.
Leon: How long have you been able to do all this?
It’s hardly an innocent question but Leon’s tone is honest and Merlin cannot feel cornered by his words.
Merlin: Since birth.
Arthur: Lies.
Elyan: Is that possible?
Gwaine: What?
Leon: Is that all you can do? Move things? Will them to your command?
Now that question is loaded even if Leon means no ill will. Merlin swallows, he nods.
Merlin: Yes
Leon: What else can you command?
Merlin: The seas
Arthur: A mermaid are you, now?
Merlin: The trees and the ground.
Arthur: A nymph perhaps?
Merlin: The skies
Arthur: Now you’re just being absurd-
Merlin: Lighting.
Merlin cuts in quickly. He was never proud of it, bringing the bolt down so harshly and eradicating the sorceress to nothing but a pile of smouldering ash but Arthur will find out one way or another. Banishment or pyre he will make sure Arthur hears of his crimes before he goes.
Merlin: Nimue. I killed her. A bolt straight through her body. There was nothing left.
The group maintains their silence for a few moments and Arthur finally turns to look at Merlin for the first time since they’d stopped to make camp
Arthur: Prove it.
Merlin: Sire-
Arthur: Don’t call me that and prove it.
Merlin: Why? Hoping i’ll mess it all up and strike myself down? Save you the trouble of building the pyre?
Arthur: If I wanted you dead you wouldn’t be speaking so stop moping, get off your arse and prove. It.
Merlin doesn’t need to get up because the second Arthur stops talking Merlin’s eyes are sparking gold and the sky erupts in a violent flash of colour. tendrils of brilliant white crack the darkness apart, coating the forest in a momentary burst of day before the light fades and in its wake leaves behind the fading outline of the Pendragon crest in the forks of dying white.
The group remains still, staring upwards at the now pitch black sky before Elyan is laughing out loud and Gwaine is excitedly smacking Leon beside him.
Gwaine: Oh my god, we could do so much. We could strike Lord Harold down and he wouldn’t even know what hit him-
Arthur: shut up, Gwaine
Arthur is still staring at the sky and Leon speaks from beside him.
Leon: Forgive me for asking, ignore me next time
The Knight is almost blushing in his place and Merlin manages a small huff of laughter at that before he resumes poking at the fire but his moment of silence is inturpeted
Arthur: Sir Percival, you’ve been unusually quiet. Please, what are your opinions on all of this.
Arthur seems pissed off, but not in an angry way, more of an i’ve been outvoted and i’m not happy about it way. Percival shrugs, picking away at the skin of nails like he has no idea what this conversation could possibly be about.
Arthur: Percival?
Percy: Mhh hmm.
Arthur raises an eyebrow. Percival stares back at him.
Percy: Yes, Sire?
Arthur: Don’t play dumb with me.
Percy: I don’t know what you mean, sire.
There’s a moment , a beat, barely a second.
Gwaine: You knew?!?!!!?!???!?
Elyan: You sly bastard!
Leon: oh lord-
Percy: I didn’t, I swear-
Arthur: Percival-
Merlin: How-
Percy: I THOUGHT WE ALL KNEW-
Gwaine: WHY WOULD YOU THINK THAT-
Elyan: HOW WOULD WE HAVE KNOWN-
Leon: Kill me.
Percy: IT WAS SO OBVIOUS-
Merlin: HANG ON-
GWAINE: WHY WOULD’NT YOU TELL ME?
Elyan: Gwen’s going to be so pissed off she missed this
Gwaine: I THOUGHT WE WE’RE FRIENDS-
Merlin: HOW WAS IT OBVIOUS-
Percy: WE ARE, I JUST THOUGHT WE WEREN’T ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT IT
Leon: please lord,
ELYAN: WHY WOULD’NT WE BE ALLOWED TO- Oh, no, wait, yeah got it, continue.
Percy: I THOUGHT YOU WERE ALL AWARE AND JUST NEVER MENTIONED IT CAUSE IT WAS SUCH A CASUAL THING THATS WHY I WOULD ALWAYS GIVE YOU A CLAP ON THE BACK AFTER AN AMBUSH OR-
Merlin: I THOUGH IT WAS CAUSE I DIDN’T DIE
Leon: Finish me off
Percy: YEAH, CAUSE YOU SAVED US. WITH MAGIC
Leon: I beg of you
ELyan: Holy shit-
Gwaine: Have we really been that blind?
Percival shrugs and Merlin still looks at him like he’s just betrayed his entire blood line.
Leon: Please, it would be the kind thing to do
Elyan: What?
Leon: What?
Gwaine: Did you tell him?
Merlin: Why would i tell him?
Percy: ouch.
Arthur: Percival.
Everyone pauses, Leon stops praying to a deity he does not believe in and Merlin stops looking so offended but Gwaine and Elyan still hold that child like wonder in their eyes.
Arthur: I’m not entirely sure what to threaten you with right now but I will think of something and trust me you’re going to wish you were never born.
Gwaine: Fair do’s, that
Percy: So Merlin gets away scot free but not me?
Merlin: OI-
Arthur: Oh, i’m not even started with you.
Gwaine: Oh, c’mon princess, don’t act like you didn’t have even the slightest hunch.
Arthur’s head spins at a pace that’s frankly alarming to look over at Gwaine. He narrow his eyes like he was lining up his next arrow for loosening. There’s another beat before Gwaine’s eyes widen
Gwaine: OH MY GOD YOU DID-
Then Arthur is launching forward, over the fire and it takes the four others an hour to get Arthur to release the impossible grip he has on Gwaine’s hair and another two to get Gwaine to apologise for the black eye now blooming on the King’s face.

Do you ever think of how, to Arthur, Merlin is a clumsy, idiot of a servant with no care for tradition, but he makes Arthur laugh and gives the best advice and somehow, without Arthur even noticing, has become his best friend in the entire world, the person he wants to face every battle with, not only so he can protect Merlin but also so he can have Merlin’s support and approval
And then it turns out that Merlin doesn’t need protecting, and he’s the most powerful sorcerer to exist, he has magic, and has actually been the one protecting Arthur this entire time
And Arthur has to face their entire relationship being turned upside down, because okay you have magic, he’s had his suspicions about magic not being evil for a while now and of course Merlin isn’t evil, but it’s more how dare you not tell me, after I’ve came to you for everything and I thought you did too, I thought I noticed when things were wrong and put a smile on your face but this whole time you’ve not trusted me
And in a matter of hours he has to relearn their entire friendship and try to understand why Merlin has done this and why he keeps doing this and make sure that everything else about our friendship is true please say the rest was true
And by the end, because he is dying and the end is so very near, it doesn’t matter anymore because he is Arthur and he is Merlin and it doesn’t matter that they’re also the Once and Future King of Camelot and Emrys the Most Powerful Sorcerer Ever to Live
No, they’re just Merlin and Arthur in their last few minutes together and they both know it and this is his last chance so it’s not you betrayed me and I need time and how could you do this to us, instead it’s it’s okay and hold me and thank you because if this is his last chance to protect Merlin then of course he is going to take it, that’s always been his job and neither death nor magic is going to change that

Arthur repeals the magic ban! Yay! Druids, Catha, and all others come to Camelot to live peacefully under the reign of the Once And Future King! Yay! The Golden Age is starting! Yay! Merlin still hasn’t told Arthur about magic! …He’s just waiting for the right time. Things have just happened so fast and he just doesn’t know how to bring it all up.
Well, as Arthur and the rest of Camelot get more comfortable with magic, Arthur makes a decision. He’s tried teaching Merlin every type of weapon out there, and he’s hopeless with every one of them. But, Merlin still insists on coming with him on dangerous quests. So, Arthur decides to have Merlin try his hand at magic so he has some sort of self defense.
Merlin: ...You want me to what?
Arthur: I know! I know, Merlin! Magic can be dangerous! But I found a wonderful teacher for you. Say hello, Wallace.
Wallace: Hello
Arthur: He's perfectly trustworthy! And, it'll all be perfectly safe!
Merlin: Arthur, there's something you need to know. About me and magic--
Arthur: I know what you're going to say, Merlin, and--
Merlin: I really don't think you know--
Arthur: --please, for me, just try this. I know you don't really like magic. But please, Merlin. And, you know, even if you're crap at it--which you likely are like everything else--you could probably at least get your eyes to do the gold thing. That'll probably scare off some people from hurting you. Like a rattle snake.
Merlin: Arthur, really, you need to listen to me--
Arthur: I'll even do it with you!
Merlin: Arthur, really...Wait what?
Arthur: I'll do it with you! To show you how not dangerous it is! You have no reason to be scared of learning it, Merlin. It'll be easy.
Merlin: ...You're going to try to learn magic?
Arthur: Yes. How hard could it be. You're going to learn it.
Merlin, crossing his arms: Okay, then. I'd like to see this. Let's see you do magic, Once And Future Prat, Mr. Magic King
Arthur, smug at getting Merlin to agree: Good. Our first lesson starts now.
They both look to Wallace. Arthur happy, Merlin raising a judgmental eyebrow. Wallace starts with the history of magic and the theories behind using it. They don't get to the actually magic using part of the lesson day. Wallace does give them both some texts to study.
Their next lesson does get to the magic part.
Wallace: You want to really feel into the magic of the world around you. Feel the earth. Feel the connection you have to that earth. Feel the power that runs through it.
Merlin's enjoying it, letting the magic wash over him, and also peeking at Arthur who seems to be struggling with it. When asked, Merlin says he doesn't feel anything either. He wants to keep watching Arthur struggle.
Their next lesson, Wallace tries to teach them some basic spells. Lighting a candle. Moving a small object. Merlin laughs at all of Arthur's attempts.
Arthur: Well let's see you do better, Merlin!
Merlin just keeps laughing.
Their lessons keep getting interrupted by this or that. Merlin also has a very busy job. One would think that he'd have less work now that magic was legalized, but no. Now he just has more magic beasts roaming the lands, and people freaking out and attacking those magic beasts, leading to fights and stuff. He's always having to slip away to resolve the matter. He has gotten very good at calming dangerous magic beasts and relocating them. But, relocating takes longer than just killing, so he's still just as busy and gone just as much as he was when dealing with vengeful sorcerers.
Every single start of magic lesson:
Wallace: Did you do the homework I assigned?
Arthur, proud: Yes, I did. I did all the reading, but I did have some trouble with the spellwork.
Merlin, who was up all night settling a griffin family into a new nest on a tall mountain: Uh. No. Didn't have time.
Arthur: Merlin, this is your lesson!
Eventually, Merlin has his fill of watching Arthur struggling with magic, and decides that this time is better spent doing other things. So, during one of the lesson, when Wallace tells them to make the flower bloom, without looking up from the report he's going over, he waves his hand and his pot explodes with the force of plants that grow out of it instantly.
Wallace: ...
Arthur: ...

I need a fic where Lancelot gets hit by a curse that makes him extremely honest/completely removes his thought to speech filter.
Like, he doesn’t blurt secrets but he’s got no sense of fear for saying things he probably shouldn’t and just starts saying all the quiet parts out loud.
Merlin’s immediately worried about him. I kinda imagine it like:
Merlin: Do you think you’ll say anything about..?
Lance: your secret? No. Definitely not. It’s your secret to tell. Arthur should know how much you do for him even without it though. You should remind him you’re not obligated to do so much if he keeps taking advantage of your kindness.
Merlin: That…
Lance: I clearly mean it. It’s your choice of course. You know I love you too much to betray your trust.
(I’m a sucker for Mercelot but take that however you want)
Then when they all get back to Camelot and one of the towns people is struggling to fix a cart with a broken wheel.
Lance *goes over to help and starts berating the knights*: we’re knights. We’re supposed to help people. If you just want to beat people up, we’ve run into plenty of bandits that would probably take you.
And we all know he doesn’t like the structure of statuses and how power is distributed in Camelot so while he’s still respectful to Arthur as a king, the rest of the lords not so much. He avoids them as much as possible to avoid causing unnecessary problems but when Arthur asks if he’ll be at a council meeting, he’s gotta say no:
Lance: I don’t think that’d be a good idea.
Arthur: why not? I could use someone honest on the council.
Lance: I am honest with you. Mostly. You definitely shouldn’t ask what I think about magic until I can be tactful about my answer. But If I get a chance to be honest in the same room as Lord NoName I’m going to ask him if he doesn’t want to pay taxes because too much of his coin already goes to his mistresses and his wife will find out if he’s forced to document it.
Arthur: …
Lance: …
Arthur: … I don’t know which part to focus on first. If Lord NoName isn’t there will you attend?
Lance: he’s not the only one. Personally, I think they should hear it, but I don’t want to be callous about it. Their wives deserve better and forcing them to find out through gossip and rumours just seems unnecessarily cruel.
Arthur: I’ll call a round table meeting later.
Lance: Probably for the best. You should give Merlin a seat, he’s braver and has done more for you than anyone. I’ll see you later, sire.
I can imagine the magic thing would keep coming up too, just little comments about how he’s frustrated that he’ll be used as an example for why magic should be banned when it’s not all bad and can actually be quite amazing.
Everyone’s confused but he just asks Leon if he likes being alive because he wouldn’t be without the Druids and the cup of life.
Heaven forbid anyone says anything bad about Merlin. He never out’s Merlin’s secret as promised, but he absolutely makes sure everyone is aware how much Merlin does for people out of the goodness of his heart.
I also want him to shit on Uther at some point. About his parenting style or how he ruled Camelot, I don’t mind which.
I imagine someone mentioning how well Lance is handling the curse and “taking it like a man” and getting immediately shot down.
Noble: he’s handling it well, taking it like a man.
Lancelot: Hypocritical coming from you, Lord He-Payed-Less-Than-I-Did-Even-Though-It-was-Proportional-To-Everything-Else. (I don’t pretend to understand how a fictional court set in about 5 different historical eras is run) Actually, not complaining about a situation that sucks isn’t a manly trait at all. All of the problems we’re dealing with are because something happened and someone “took it like a man.” Tax evasion, wars, uneven distribution of wealth, *putting reports on the table for each one* The last time someone “took it like a man” we ended up with an entire people being murdered because a king fucked up, lost his wife, and didn’t want to admit fault and grieve like a sane person.
Everyone’s just silent for a moment.
Lance: … *thinks about what he said for a second*
Lance: No, I stand by that. I’ll apologise for my lack of tact, but not the content.
Meanwhile, watching in horror and barely contained glee:
Arthur: Should have let him sit this one out.
Merlin: Absolutely not. This might become the most productive council meeting we’ve had in years.
Anyway, I just want Lance being able to lean more into the unhinged side of his character sometimes.
He’s still got to fundamentally be a good person, he’s just less filtered in watching the casual stupidity of the nobles, or more honest about people not thanking servants enough (especially to the knights who seemed to forget that they were once common born too) and isn’t afraid to call people on their bullshit when necessary.
Everyone learns to appreciate it too so when the spell wears off, he’s less anxious about giving his opinions on things.
Just let Lancelot be the unfiltered chaotic good that he is.

Headcanon- Merlin only ever tells one person about his magic and it’s Arthur. Morgana finds out when Merlin helps her out of a magical panic attack and proceeds to beg for his guidance. Gwen suspected for a while before confirming he has it when Morgana confesses that she has magic and someone has been helping her. We all know how Lancelot figured it out. Gwaine knew when he was called magic by the guardian. Leon, Elyan, and Percy all saw glimpses of magic in fights. When Merlin tells Arthur for a brief moment he thinks Arthur might snap. He doesn’t even realize that the rest of the table is behind him glaring at Arthur.

A slightly angsty Merthur fic idea/ mini fic where a magic reveal goes slightly wrong, and Merlin and Arthur are captured by bandits. Things are still raw between both of them—think of their interactions in Diamond of the Day—but they’re stuck together anyway. They’ll have to depend on each other to escape (they will, but angst first).
The bandits know that Merlin has magic and give him cold iron shackles so he can’t use it. Worse, their leader is bragging how much coin they’ll get if they hand over their new sorcerer (Merlin) to Cenred.
Merlin’s fate seems to be uncertain: even if he escapes with Arthur, Arthur could still have him arrested for magic. Or he could end up being forced to fight for Cenred. (I think it’s headcanon that known sorcerers are forced to serve Cenred in Essetir and that’s partially why Merlin had gone to Camelot in the first place.)
So, as soon as they’re alone (in a cell or tied to trees away from the bandit camp), Merlin asks Arthur to kill him. (He would rather die than serve Cenred, and he knows execution probably awaits him in Camelot anyway.)
Arthur is obviously horrified that Merlin would ask him to do that. He asks why.
Merlin doesn’t bring up that he doesn’t really see a way out of this for himself. But he answers honestly: he doesn’t want his magic to be used as a weapon. (Merlin feels no loyalty to Uther, but he has no wish to harm Camelot or anyone else. *cue Nobody’s Soldier by Hozier*)
His answer is what brings Arthur to look at him fully again—stranger and friend, sorcerer and servant. (Basically Arthur goes from not recognizing the Merlin he thought he knew, to realizing he’s the same fool he’s always known.)
They escape later, and there’s much for Arthur to relearn about his friend, but they work together to bring magic back

Merlin’s secret headcanons
All of the knights know Merlin has a secret, they don’t all know what it is but they have ideas.
- Lancelot knows that Merlin is a sorcerer, him and Merlin talk about it, he knows about the prophecy.
- Gwaine knows that Merlin is a sorcerer, he also knows that sorcery is illegal and that as a knight he has a duty to turn him in, so he pretends not to know. He also always covers for him when he disappears and Arthur comes to the tavern looking for him.
- Elyan has suspicions about Merlin being a sorcerer (it’s not very well hidden) but is convinced that no one is stupid enough to deliberately practice magic that close to the pendragon so he assumes that Merlin doesn’t know what he’s doing.
- Leon knows for certain that Merlin is gay. He understands it’s frowned upon which is why it’s a secret and that clearly Merlin wants it to be a secret so he doesn’t bring it up but sometimes he worries for the boy’s safety cause he is not hiding it well.
- Percival is pretty sure Merlin has a crush on most of the knights, definitely Lancelot and Arthur, maybe also Gwaine. He thinks that everyone knows he’s gay and that they just don’t bring it up. (He also thinks Gwaine is bi and Arthur is at least a little interested in men).
- Arthur believes Merlin is gay, he also believes Merlin doesn’t know he’s gay. He doesn’t bring it up he’s trying to let Merlin discover himself in his own time though he does something made the odd remark to try and nudge his discovery along a bit. (He also believes Merlin has a crush on him).

Young prince Arthur exploring the castle bc his emotionally and mostly physically absent father doesn’t care what he does as long as he gets his studies done. He pretends he’s a brave knight with a small wooden sword in hand and ventures down in the belly of the castle and stumbles upon a cavern under the castle. It’s not long before Kilgharrah lands before him and laughs at the young child before him, a baby really. This is no Once and Future King. But…Arthur does not scream and run, he holds up his wooden sword, shaking with terror as he stares down the ferocious beast, full of courage. And Kilgharrah stares and stares and stares before sighing heavily and going, “Fine. I’ll adopt you. Stop looking at me like that.”
Anyways, Arthur grows up visiting Kilgharrah and hearing about prophecies and destiny. He watches Kilgharrah perform small bits of magic and grows up knowing the truth of what’s happened. By the time merlin arrives in Camelot, Arthur is pro-magic and anti-Uther but holy fuck is he the most arrogant prick of all time. Not only did he grow up a prince to be king, he grew up knowing he was to be a king of legend. Merlin bullies him relentlessly like in canon and everything happens as it did.
But Arthur visits Kilgharrah for advice of magical threats and leaves like right before Merlin visits him for advice. Kilgharrah never says anything bc he likes to watch them be idiots. Arthur and Merlin sneaking behind each other’s back to use/consult magic (users) to help solve their issues and never telling the other. But Arthur keeps failing. He goes to find a powerful enough Druid or Sorcerer to combat magic from a High Priestess and he can’t find anyone. However, as if by magic (ha ha ha), the threat is neutralized without Arthur’s interference. Baby boy is so confused.
This goes on for years and slowly breaks down his confidence as he thought that being the Once and Future King meant conquering all these threats and protecting his people yet…he can’t. He hasn’t properly neutralized a threat in a while, bc I mean sometimes it happens but the other times he’s knocked out for SOME FUCKING REASON. So he’s moping in his room and Merlin’s like “What’s wrong?” In a super soft voice when he sees Arthur’s kicked puppy look.
Arthur barely thinks about it before telling Merlin. He’s wanted to for years but he never wanted to drag Merlin into danger by getting him involved in treason bc while his father would be irate with him, Uther wouldn’t hesitate before chopping off Merlin’s head. But Merlin has always been there for Arthur, and rebuilt his confidence despite the other times where he’s humbling him. So Arthur tells him everything. And Merlin is silent. And quiet. And silent. And quiet. And silent. And quiet. And-
He starts cursing the dragon angrily and drags Arthur down through the castle to Kilgharrah’s cavern. The dragon is already there laughing his ass off. Arthur is confused on how Merlin knew where to go. Merlin is shouting curses up at the dragon. Kilgharrah just looks down at them as he laughs and is like, “Finally, the Once and Future King and Emrys have united.”
Arthur (grew up knowing he had someone out there who was “half of his soul” as Kilgharrah said which he took to mean his soulmate and has been fantasizing about meeting this mysterious and powerful Emrys and…other things… Well, until he met Merlin. Then the fantasies featured all three of them) is…staring at Merlin wide eyed and flustered and a little turned on at how the small human is shouting angrily at the big dragon as if the big dragon couldn’t just stomp the both of the small humans or roast them alive. Arthur’s fantasies merge Merlin and Emrys together and it’s back to just the two of them.
Merlin is grumpy bc he had to hide his magic from Arthur for YEARS only to find out that the clotpole was ON HIS FUCKING SIDE?????? AND THE DAMN LIZARD KNEW ABOUT IT????? Oh, Merlin wants a set of Dragon scale armor and Kilgharrah’s golden scales would suit him nicely, he thinks. He’ll skin the damn beast himself-

I know it’s for plot sake and also very unrealistic how Arthur doesn’t realise Merlin has magic, many times, even if it’s right in front of him, and even if some of Merlin’s excuses are just so stupid and unbelievable that you should actually be a dollophead to not see it, but then you think about how much trust Arthur has in Merlin, how much he put him on a pedestal, how much reverence he has for him, that he believes him, even if Merlin says, “Look, there’s a flying donkey behind you.” (Arthur would turn around, no doubt there).
And then it just becomes cute: Arthur is adorable and besotted with his manservant. That’s it. That’s the reason behind his obliviousness.

I really don’t think there’s any way that arthur didn’t know that merlin loved him, even if it’s never acknowledged by name between them for the whole show. he just doesn’t realize the sheer magnitude of it until the last episode, until he utters that
I know now.
Merlin, from his perspective, was someone so helpless but so keen on keeping arthur safe. he was someone who was completely defenseless yet foolish enough to go with arthur on the most treacherous of quests and to face horrors by his side just to be sure arthur was safe. Arthur knew all this, and I really do think he attributed it to merlin loving him in this unsaid unspoken way, and I also fully believe he reciprocated (again, in this unspoken way). I think maybe it was also something he had to come to terms with when he found out about Merlin’s magic— the thought that merlin wasn’t actually there just because of sheer love like he thought, but because he had power to protect that arthur never knew. maybe it was just duty, maybe he misread the whole thing. but in the end, that I know now… he knows. he knows the depths of Merlin’s love that is far beyond any protective duty, he knows just how much merlin was risking to love him and keep him safe.

“He still at least wears Pendragon red though. Maybe it’s alri– nope, he burned it. Nevermind, you’re fucked, princess.”
Some context. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with burn, butcher, burn and since I’m also obsessed with Merlin (you don’t say) I thought about a crossover. So, Arthur and Merlin are attacked by bandits in the forest, Merlin is forced to use magic, and Arthur witnesses it all. Arthur is angry, disappointed, hurt etc and banishes Merlin, leaving him alone in the forest and returning to Camelot. The problem is that Merlin is also angry, because after everything he’s done for Arthur he’s banished, really? So, fuck Destiny, fuck the stupid dragon and his stupid prophecy but, mostly, fuck Arthur Pendragon. Merlin leaves and doesn’t look back. It takes Arthur less than 24 hours to figure out he screwed up and goes looking for Merlin.  Well, he is not amused by what he finds but he knows he deserves it. At first Merlin refuses to go back, but Gwaine’s jokes and Arthur’s pleading eyes (and his apologies) convince him. (That and the patrons begging him to leave. Jaskier may be good at singing but Merlin not so much) Also: “I hear you’re alive, how disappointing I’ve also survived, no thanks to you Did I not bring you some glee Mister, oh, look at me Now I’ll burn all the memories of you“

Merlin Cinderella au 🫣
I’m not good at writing but, I think it would be really cute to have a Cinderella au with everything being the same (setting and Arthur being the prince wise)
It would take place when Merlin just comes to Camelot, and instead of living in the castle, Gauis has a house/healing center in the lower town.
I don’t think the evil stepmother and sisters would come into play. But it would just be Merlin coming to Camelot like in the show and becoming quick friends with people in the kingdom (huge ‘everyone loves Merlin’ believer)
Uthur wants Arthur to marry to continue the bloodline and to secure him as next in line to rule. So he holds a ball for all eligible (noble) suitors in the kingdom (suspended disbelief of Uthurs possible bigotry 💀)
Merlin wants to go cause he thinks it’ll be fun but he can’t since he’s not a noble. He goes looking through Gauis’s old magic books to find a spell to change his appearance and accidentally summons a fairy godmother.
He gets his disguise but it’ll only last till midnight so he makes the most of it and causes as much mischief as possible, when else is he ever gonna get an opportunity to get into the castle and get away with anything he wants with no repercussions? (No one will recognize him 😈)
Arthur is overwhelmed with everyone practically throwing themselves at him so he gets away to the gardens( or something of that sort)
There he spots Merlin setting up a prank or something. He questions what he’s doing and Merlin says something like “are you a snitch?”
Merlin and Arthur proceed to pull pranks on a bunch of the nobles and Arthur has the time of his life for the first time in forever. Merlin doesn’t treat him like the prince, he treats him like just some guy and Arthur loves it.
They settle down back in the gardens with them both in a fit of laughter after their last joke. One of them makes a comment about having not danced the entire night. With the overbearing music of the hall muffled by the quiet of the garden, they dance together under the moonlight.
Arthur makes a comment about not even knowing Merlin’s name when the bells chime for midnight.
Merlin’s eyes widen like saucers and he takes off, shouting apologies as he goes. And in his rush off his neckerchief snags on one of the flower bushes.
Arthur finds the neckerchief and swears he’ll find that mysterious man again.
Merlin makes it back to Gauis’s hut just in time as the spell wears off and passes out in bed
The next morning there’s a royal decree to find the man danced with the prince and lost his neckerchief getting away
I feel that Arthur would be really determined to find him. And he would know that Merlin was not a noble, no noble would behave the way Merlin did.
Arthur would personally go through the whole kingdom, house to house if he had to.
I feel like they would meet again in a really funny way too. Like Merlin would be delivering something for Gauis and they would run into each other like how they met in the show.
As soon as Arthur would hear his snarky comeback he would know that it’s him lol
Arthur would propose to him on the spot with the neckerchief
And they would live snark-ly ever after
