Merla AU Update 3

Ok new stuff for my Kallura folks... Merla manages to convince Keith to stay with Voltron when she tricks him into a date with her. Allura follows after them distrusting of Merla and stalking them during this date. Merla tells Keith that no one is truly ready to be a leader and tells Keith not to be like Shiro in leading Voltron but to lead Voltron as Keith. Merla head back and tells Lotor she was at the Unaloo swap meet looking for more artifacts from other realities planets/useless junk no one wants.

Also Merla becomes friends with Allura grateful for her willingly donating her own Quintessence to help with Merla's own Quintessence deficiency syndrome. Merla gets to roam the Castle of Lions as she earned their trust on this. Lance flirts with Merla but she isnt interested and asks how one 'flirts with a male,' while trying to connect with her Alrean heritage.

I was talking to friends the other day about fancharacters (kicked off by this post by my friend @leonawriter)- that is to say, original characters inserted into a canon universe via fanwork and specifically there to interact more with canon characters than with other fancharacters- and when the only real litmus set to them is “are they a Mary Sue?” that’s not very helpful.

I think the criticism of “Mary Sue” is fundamentally misguided, not only for its lurking misogynistic attitudes (female characters are not allowed to be special or if they are special they have to work, and suffer, twice as hard as the male characters to “justify” their specialness) but also because the character being special is not the problem.

What I would consider one of the most important things about a fancharacter is niche.

All characters in a story have a reason they’re put in the story. They explore something about the larger setting, they contribute something to their allies, they change the plot somehow. They have friends, enemies, opinions, interests.

If you’re adding a character to an existing group, look at the group, say, “what do they need here, or would benefit from, that they don’t have?”

For example, in VLD, if you consider the Generals don’t really have prior-continuity counterparts, they’re just successfully integrated OCs. Many of their niches, they fill just by being interesting complex characters- they have different personalities, history, and connections, and meaningfully play off of each other.

But they also serve a larger storytelling niche. The first obvious one is that VLD as an adaptation distances Lotor from Zarkon and Haggar, and the main empire. Unless you want to make an antagonist talk to themselves needlessly much, it’s good to give them allies to diversify their situations and how they operate, and also give them ways to assert their presence without being personally in attendance. VLD could have included Cossack, Mogor, Merla, or Maahox from prior continuities- but they chose instead to create original characters to fill that void (and I, for one, am grateful)

Furthermore, Lotor has in prior continuities been set up as a counterpart to the Black Paladin (usually Keith)- but when he’s operating in that role, he’s never in the past had four other subordinates to actually complete the unit and drive the “anti-Voltron” symbolism home.

So this is the obvious tidy storytelling niche for the generals: the writers of VLD basically went “so if Lotor’s a dark analogue to the Black Paladin, where’s his Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow paladins? Black is a leader, a head, so who are his arms and legs?”

Because of this, the generals don’t “feel” like people expect OCs to, because they’re nicely integrated. Their personalities slot together nicely because they’re rooted in the same five-man team mold that’s so popular and effective (There’s a reason it’s a pain in the butt to actually integrate a sixth character into a five-man team)

Conversely, I would cite the character Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X as an example of not doing it right. Not because Chris is a bad character at all- but he’s been dealt a bad hand. Because he’s supposed to be a major character, but both personality-wise, story-wise, and in terms of capabilities, he’s effectively a second Tails. And since Tails is the more beloved legacy character everyone’s familiar with, the writers made Tails better at everything Chris is trying to do- so Chris’s victories feel arbitrary and his role feels tacked on.

This is ameliorated in earlier episodes when Chris has more of a role as Sonic’s liaison to the human world, but the more that becomes unnecessary (he doesn’t need anyone to hide him) the more, tragically, Chris himself feels unnecessary. And again, I don’t say that because I hate the character- it’s because as much as you can love a character, they still need to have something meaningful they’re bringing to the plot.

Another way this can be important is that your characters’ backstories or settings they’re connected to shouldn’t exist in a vacuum. If they’re from somewhere nobody’s heard of, anchor this setting to the plot in other ways. Make it important- and this is contrary to a lot of popular “anti-Mary Sue” advice I saw before.

Successful integration of a new character into a narrative results in the fact that your audience will generally, immediately care about them. Here’s what I think is a really successful example of that by @joleanart. So I’ve never seen these five Altean OCs. All I have on them is this one set of pictures.

Niche established: they’re people Allura knew, good friends of hers. This is a canon niche that’s lying open: we know that Allura lost people, we know that a gregarious person like her would have good friends. We know, as the artist points out, there was a battle for Altea, that it fought back against the empire, that they were more than just defenseless victims who languished and died.

Integrating threads: These are specific people, not just random strangers. They have connections to people we already care about. Seeing these people in what we know are their final moments, their losing battle, putting their faith in the idea of Altea, in Allura specifically- emphasizes Allura’s canon role as a beacon of hope in the face of grief and despair.

While it overlaps with Alfor’s sacrifice for Allura’s welfare, it doesn’t diminish, but rather, adds to it, enriches and explores it. They may not have been there when Alfor put Allura in stasis and launched Coran with the castleship, but they were the people outside fighting on the front lines giving them the time to do that. Alfor was Allura’s beloved father, but he wasn’t the only person that loved her and he wasn’t the only person that died for her that day.

Differentiation and personality: some of them are sad, some resigned, some defiant. Some are speaking to more distant ideals, other make it personal. Their situations, even as little as we see them, are different and how they respond to them are different.

The result of it all together? I get really invested in these guys really fast. With only the tiny scrap of “this was the battle for Altea, as illustrated by good friends of Allura’s” I’m not just emotionally moved, but now the meta gears in my brain are turning, grabbing onto this for how much it enriches the narrative- but who were these people specifically, what are the things Allura shared with them- she probably thinks about them, remembers them going forwards. Are there qualities they have that she sees in the paladins, and how does she feel about that?

This is a really successful emotional suckerpunch. With very minimal “lore”, and five characters at once, this artist has very successfully integrated and landed that emotional connection and they did so because they started really effectively from “so, hey, this canon character logically had to have known people during this phase in her life, and because of how canon ended up... we know she lost them. What did that look like? What was their story, the one we didn’t follow but we kind of know how it ended?”

Keith x Merla HC's

Developing relationship:

(Allura sacrifice herself) They start to become close by speaking about Allura.

Merla wants to know more about the person saving them all. She wishes that she had gotten to meet their Princess and regrets that she used to stand against Voltron and the Paladins. She wants to learn their story and keep it alive, so she asked all the Paladins about it.

She first became friends with Lance and Pidge and slowly became a part of the group of friends. Then she got closer to Keith the more they interacted in the group, their small talks developing and reaching further into other subjects.

They both find that they feel comfortable with each other.

(Allura survives) Merla works close by Allura's side and becomes a close friend.

The more she hangs out with Allura and Romelle, the more she also gets to be around the other Paladins as well.

She soon finds comfort in Keith's presence, the two of them can hang back while watching the others goof around, and either share a quiet Company or hold small conversations about whatever.

...

Headcanons:

* This new friendship grows larger when they also start working together, Merla's team of pilots teaming up with the Blades while visiting other planets.

* This leads to them spending more time with each other, even outside of work and without the presence of their other friends.

* They would start to train together so that Merla would get better at hand-to-hand combat and also so that they could fight more in sync.

* Merla would be interested in learning about Earth culture(cultures) and thus, Keith would show her around places, which eventually leads the two of them to go traveling together during vacations and time off.

* Merla would in turn want to teach Keith about her culture and people and she would try to teach him some of the Altean language. (Keith would take the time to get to learn about these things, not only because his new friend wants to teach him, but also because this is the world Allura came from and which she managed to save in the end.)

*Slowly, as time goes by, a small crush develops.

* Keith often takes them to places by riding his hover bike.

* In the beginning Merla was always sitting behind him on the bike, with him driving them, and eventually she wanted to learn it herself. She came to love the feeling of the wind in her face and watching the scenery pass her by in a flash.

* After this, she begun to join Keith and Shiro during them racing in the deserts.

* She still likes to sit behind Keith at times though, since she gets to cling onto him. (She would be lying if she said she didn't enjoy staying pressed against his back)

* As she has learnt to drive by herself now too, they sometimes switch it and she is the one driving with Keith sitting behind her. The feeling of him holding onto/embracing her tightly makes her body tingle.

* They like to meet up and go out for coffe dates. (It takes some time before either of them admits that these meet-ups are in fact dates.)

* While Merla hates the taste of coffe and has to add a lot of sugar and cream to drink it, she likes the comfortable mood inside the coffe shops/café's they go to and the smell of the hot drink(s).

* It gets better when she discovers all of the more sweet coffe drinks that exists.

* While neither of them are big shoppers, they can still go to the mall to look around at times when they don't have much to do. (They usually just get dragged along with their friends who DO like shopping)

* Most of the time they only shop for things that are neccessary for them, but they also do enjoy looking for random objects to collect or for small gifts to buy for each other.

* Sometimes, Merla likes to braid Keith's hair, and Keith in turn sometimes braids Merla's side bang (it took some practice, but he soon got the hang of it).

* They both enjoy ice cream with the mix of raspberry and licorice flavor.

Keith x Merla Headcanon:

Keith would make sure to spend time with Merla, training or just listen to her talk about her intetests, even after just having returned from a long mission with the Blades.

During one of these times while sitting beside her, Keith can't help but give in to his exhaustion and he doses off, leaning against her with his head on her shoulder.

It catches Merla off guard and she looks at Keith in surprise. Upon seeing his sleeping face, she is quickly filled up with adoration when realizing just how tired Keith is and that he still went out of his way to visit her.

She gently moves his body to lay him down in a more comfortable position, careful to not wake him up, and have him rest his head on her lap.

They stay like that for a while, with Merla running her fingers through Keith's hair, until he wakes up.

Keith is rather embarrassed at having fallen asleep like that. Even more so when he realizes that he's been drooling slightly in his sleep and he quickly wipes it away while Merla tries to stiffle her laughter.

Voltron Merla AU update 2

When they stop the rifts by sacrificing the Castle of Lions Merla in rage escapes and goes to Oriande and finds her mother there who comforts and welcomes her back but in her schizophrenia and broken state takes advantage of her to bring back Lotor.

VLD idea for possible fix it.

Lotor isnt an only child. He had a twin sister named Merla but due to the complications at birth Merla was physically weak as in she was constantly sick. Zarkon would later have Haggar give Merla a regular infusion of Quintessence to keep her alive seeing as Merla was a spitting image of Honerva.

She was gifted in Altean Alchemy but her condition prevented her from doing pursuing it further then basics. Until one day Haggar first tested the prototype Komar and had Merla as the spot the Quintessence would transfer over to.

When the planet Lotor governed was destroyed by Zarkon Merla finally began to recover. But upon learning Merla was his weakness had her banished with Lotor who continued to oversee her recovery.

Merla would later join her brother but was unaware of his Quintessence farm seeing as Lotor wanted to avoid tainting her purity... but her soul and mind began to be mutilated by the horrors of not only her fathers actions, but also of Lotor's actions. She for a time joined the Coalition and met Keith and a sort of relationship spawned between them si.ilar yo that of Lotor and Allura.

But upon arriving at Oriande where she recieved its wisdom she later learned where Lotor had recieved the Quintessence for their banishment from. It was the final straw and she secretly began her own plans. She saw that the Universe was tainted with evil and knew Allura may have been onto something with Haggar being Honerva.

Merla eventually located Alfor's darkest creation Dragos and once bonded with it had all the peices she needed. Once she learned of her brothers dark deeds to it's full extent... she escaped with him and his generals (under the pretense of being abducted) and reunited with her mother.

Merla stayed behind to cover their escape and would catch up soon but instead reunited with her mother as mother and daughter welcomed each other back. Merla desired Keith at her side as a lover though so once they wormhole to where Dragos was hidden she reached the gate and it became a battle between Sincline, Voltron, and Dracotron.

Merla's greatest ambition is to create a new universe one with peace everlasting and she wanted Keith as hers the same way Lotor wanted Allura. But Merla sees Allura as a threat to that and vines to kill her and make Keith hers.

Long story short Merla becomes one of the big bads with Homerva while Keith and Allura end up a couple seeing as the ones they thought they loved turned into such monsters.

I just find them really adorable. I love writing about them. I would make them myself, but I frigging suck at it.. (TT_TT)

If anyone would be interested/willing to make some edits, whether they are from screenshots from the show or perhaps from the official art of season 8, I would be really grateful :)
