More of Merla
(more drawings of her)
alternate universe where she is in VLD
first of all! I can't imagine her fighting with allura for lotor
I think his engagement (or marriage… I don't know) to Lotor is already established but neither of them likes the other, Merla would take advantage of the fact that Lotor is the new emperor to move and gain more power without anyone knowing, sometimes she would interfere in Voltron's plans, which they would interpret like "jealousy". Because Lotor spends a lot of time with Allura building the ship,
I don't have a very well established timeline, I would change a lot of things… it's not completely thought out but it's fun to draw it
English is not my first language, sorry

Old alternate Voltron Legendary Defender fan art I made during VLD’s airing, which I believe was season 6? Its been ages. Just found these while I was saving and deleting artworks from my Ipad because of the bent.
I am not sure of the fandom is active since its been years ago, but I want to share these ideas I had which I never got a chance because of school and irl issues. Here’s the story.
Inspired and slightly taking aspects from Beast King GoLion (Voltron), this is a mixture of retro and future but differently as it ie a modern take of it. Shiro is a respected senior cadet who leads his squad consisting of Lance, Hunk, and Pidge whom among others were chosen to explore the universe in order to find planets to inhabit in case of their home planet Earth will one day perish from the Sun in a few years. Lance is an expert in strategy thanks to his keen eye and quick thinking skills though can be arrogant and a flirt sometimes, Hunk is an expert in diplomatic manners and records their travels of their findings with the help of Pidge but can be brash sometimes, and Pidge is a navigator who pin points locations for where they travel though they can be mischievous in a pranking sense and gets smug easily. They are also in their brother’s place due to Matt being missing since the last travel years ago so they had advanced in their training days at the Garrison. They bid farewell to their families as they four went off while other squads followed suit.
Eventually as the four headed off to travel, things begin to dire as the Galran Empire ended up attacking Earth leading to global destruction that many of the governments asked those with the technology to go to space to head out of Earth and save themselves. Because of this, many civilians desperately tried to enter pods that only benefit the rich which went a bit messy and some managed to escape while Earth perished. Learning of this, Shiro, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge called their parents to ask them if they were okay as they saw the news of Earth slowly dying.
Shiro’s husband, Adam, told him to keep going and not come back but Shiro didn’t want to leave his husband behind. Adam convinced him not to, that they will find each other again before the feed went down.
No Adam didn’t die on this, he went to another pod with his squad to help civilians come travel with them which included Lance, Hunk, and Pudge’s family because of connections. This was suppose to be like, later on when they reunite xD
While they mourn the loss of their home and unsure if their loved ones are alive, they were captured by the Galra Empire and kept to be used for their sick twisted gladiator game. All four had to fight to survive for months to almost a year but they managed to escape by taking the enemy ship. Unknown to them, a certain person was following behind them in order to capture and kill for their crimes against the Galran empire. Said ship run out of fuel and crashed landed on a planet where they spotted an Altean Ship. They managed to enter inside and were shocked to find Allura and Coran whom the two thought they were intruders by attacking them. Some misunderstanding occurs which Im not sure how it ended cuz they cleared things up but they saw the figure who followed the four attack them. This is Keith, whose basically part of the Galran Empire thanks to being kidnapped as a child from his father and brainwashed as a soldier to kill Alteans. So theres anger tension between him and Allura because of Altean and Galran history.
They do become friends later on, once they overcome anger that is and realize they can end the war by defeating the Galran Empire and free all planets. They ended up becoming like, siblings which I believe is the better outcome cuz I got like pair plans xD Allura ended up with Merla (who isn’t Galran mind you) while Keith ended up with Lance.
Anyway, the Galra generals found their ship and attacked them which lead the Black Lion to emerge from that planet as Allura was actually trying to find the Lions who were in other planets after her and Coran’s home-world was destroyed as well. The Black Lion managed to destroy Galran general’s ship leading everyone including Keith whom Lance managed to tie him up and headed off to a new planet where it will be a temporary base before they can all travel to visit planets.
And they go find the lions after all need to get along on each planet which each lion responded to them such as Shiro with Black, Lance with Blue, Keith with Red, Hunk with Yellow, and Pidge with Green. There’s another lion which is for Allura so consider it as an aux! Yes I based this off Super Sentai ahhhhh. That is how they all became paladins! And try to get along where friendship and found family blooms to defeat the Galran Empire
Of course these are just what I wrote for them and change them. I may revamp them sometime if my Ipad is in working condition or when I replace it with a new one. Thanks for reading for my insane ideas :,D

So, one day, @toasthoneyandstardust made a comment about Merla's outfit in the DDP comic and to bring that back while we were also talking about Pidge in Voltron Force. That led to me wanting to draw Merla as if in Voltron Force, but with more of the goth queen vibes of the DDP comic (where she's queen of the seventh kingdom of the Drule Empire). In the end, here we are. And pointing out Allura as queen? This must be later in season one or for my brain thinking of season two stuff. Also! Yeah, I had this be from a screenshot so I could nail the VF style a bit better.
Gotta love redraws.
Anyway! I hope y'all enjoy this one! Commissions are open on my Ko-fi. Until next time!

Profiles in Villainy
Merla The Warrior Queen of Amazonia
The despotic Merla rules an alien world where women lord over men. She and her Amazonian army would send out flashing signals into the cosmos so to lure others to her planet. Equipped with powerful hypnotic rings, Merla would then mind-control any woman who came to her planet, forcing them to join her army. While any male captures were made into slaves who toiled in servitude.
Josie and The Pussycats fell into Merla’s trap and the space-faring pop stars were hypnotized into joining the queen’s ranks. The Pussycats’ roadies, Alexander and Alan, were able to escape and the pair eventually freed the Pussycats thus enabling them all to flee the planet.
Merla was voiced by actress Virginia Gregg and appeared in the sixteenth episode of Josie and The Pussycats in Outer Space, airing on December 23rd, 1972.

Enter Merla: Queen of Darkness!!! 🖤✨
I was pretty disappointed when VLD didn't explore the culture and politics of the Galra Empire more, especially after Lotor took the throne, and I was also quite disappointed with Merla's cameo. So I decided to take a crack at her design myself! Some backstory below!!
I made her Acxa's twin sister because while I don't believe it was confirmed, I always thought that 80's Merla's character must have been divided into the four women who became Lotor's generals in VLD, so why not make Merla and Acxa related? Plus in every piece of fiction you need to have at least one set of twins ;) That's just da rules babeyy~
Acxa and Merla are from Planet Drule (a loyal territory of the Galra Empire) and are half-Galra and half-Drule. They are not of royal descent, and since they were children they were looked down on because they are half-breeds. As the oldest, Acxa takes on the responsibility of looking after Merla, who over the years begins to grow restless with the two of them settling for low-ranking positions in the army and living a less than satisfying life.
One day exiled Prince Lotor comes to oversee the planet just as Merla is planning a coup to overthrow the corrupt Drule king. The coup fails, and wanting to protect her sister, Acxa takes the blame even though she had nothing to do with it. When she is sentenced to death, Lotor, seeing the potential and skill Acxa possesses, offers to pardon her in exchange for her loyalty to him, thus saving her life (it is my personal headcanon that Acxa is the first of the generals to be recruited). She accepts and tries to convince Merla to come with her, but Merla refuses and insists on staying, saying that she wants to change things on Drule, and that by leaving Acxa is abandoning her. The two part ways on bad terms, and do not see each other for many years.
Merla eventually succeeds in taking the throne, her followers assassinate the king, and she becomes queen of Drule. She and Acxa have the occasional run-in, which is how Lotor and the other generals get to know her more. There is still lingering resentment between the two sisters, however, particularly on Merla's part. The events of VLD proceed as normal up until the end of season 5, and I personally would like to take out Lotor killing Narti and the generals turning against him. Now emperor, Lotor works tirelessly to unite his people and deal with the growing Galra factions which plot to rise up against him.
News of Lotor's ascent to the throne spreads throughout the universe, and soon Queen Merla is paying a visit to the Empire and demanding an audience with him. She knows all about the Galra factions, including Sendak's Fire of Purification, and proposes that she and Lotor marry in order to combine the forces of both the Galra Empire and Planet Drule. If Lotor accepts, the two nations will become stronger than ever and no one will dare stand against them. If he refuses, Merla will merely seek support from the factions, perhaps even form an alliance with Sendak, who will eventually try to take the Galra throne himself.
What can this mean for not only the Galra Empire, but for Voltron and the Coalition as well?? What can this mean for Lotor and Allura's developing relationship??? For those who haven't seen the 80's show, Queen Merla debuts in the US-made 2nd season. She and Lotor are actually engaged for a time! Merla is cold, cunning, and calculating like Lotor, and perhaps even a little more manipulative. She enjoys being entertained and can on occasion be condescending.
And this is not meant to create any unnecessary love triangle between Merla, Lotor, and Allura. While Merla has people in her life she cares for and she respects Lotor, her first priority is maintaining her seat on the throne and looking after her people, so she really only sees Lotor as a means to gain more power. Lotor recognizes this, because he mostly shares the same mindset as her and can see the benefits of marrying her, regardless of his own feelings. And how does Allura feel about this whole matter?? 👀 Only time will tell, though it is also likely that the princess may be too proud to ever reveal how she truly feels. At the end of the day, I just think it would be fascinating to explore more of the politics of the VLD universe and the complications that come with ruling an entire empire whilst trying to keep alliances and territories intact. Plus it would make for some fun drama! Particularly in the romance category hehe.
#if you read all of that thank you so much 😖🙏#minamorsart#lotura#lotor#allura#merla#acxa#voltron#vld#voltron legendary defender#voltron art#vld art#my art#fan art#digital art#my comics#non star wars art

Would Lotor have ended up with Merla at the end of Voltron?
--------------------------------------
Summery: in the original story, Lotor is married of to a pinning woman named Merla by order of Zarkon. Merla does exist in Legendary defender so taking this and Lotor's psychology and personality into consideration, would they gave been end game?
--------------------------------------
This is an odd question In and of itself and one I don't have a definitive awnser to, however I do find it fascinating enough to consider.
Let's start with explaining the existence of Merla In the Voltron universe.
Original Merla (to my knowledge) first appeared in season 2 of Voltron: Defender of The Universe. She is portrayed with pink hair and light blue skin (there may be a purple tint to her skin depending on the series)
She is a character who appears seemingly out of nowhere as explained by Haggar and brings with her a legendary group of physic women known as the Muses of Norn. She then begins Pining for Lotor in the series however, these actions may have some ulterior motives to them.
Merla is an queen all her own, having conquered and built up an empire herself, her primary capital (planet) is unnamed and men are forbidden to step foot on it. Haggar is fond of her and it's not surprising considering Merla has some supernatural power of her own. Like Narti, Merla can control minds and have a bonded animal companion (Merla has a bird). That being said her power is not as powerful as Narti's but does have its own upside. Merla can't fully control a person's actions, more so, she can plant suggestions in their mind. But she benefits where Narti's power falters in that she does not have to physically touch her victims for her power to work.
And finally, personality wise, she's nothing to write home about. "Merla is sophisticated, snooty, often petty, power hungry and determined to get what she wants by any means. While not as blatantly cruel as Zarkon or Lotor, she’s not a nice person; most people are pawns or obstacles to her. She also enjoys humiliating those she dislikes and uses her powers to do so." A statement taken from a wonderful Voltron fan account on Tumbler who goes further in depth to the character's behavior and understanding.
And cruel she is. Humiliating Lotor, alienating everyone except Zarkon (who's caught the feels) insulting Haggar's appearance and powers, attempting to kill and torture Allura, ect. As stated by "The Voltron Fandom Hag" she does soften quite a bit by the end of the series and even alies with the Voltron Force to save Lotor after she finds he is to be executed (this is due to her growng love for him) Eventually Merla does succeed I'm marrying Lotor, however, the marriage is annulled soon after.
--------------------------------------
Now Original Merla doesn't seem like anyone VLD Lotor would have an infatuation with. But remember she does exist in Legendary Defender as a much nicer person.
Vld Merla first appeared in season 8 episode 2 when we see Honerva's path from Priestess to Empress and her motives behind her actions.
Her features have been heavily changed (similarly with what was done with haggar) and she is now Altean with a slight redder tint to her hair, tan skin and violet eyes. She has a particular fondness to Lotor (for being the savior) and Honerva (for being his mother). She's fiercely loyal, respectful, stronghearted, and has good instincts, recognizing immediately upon Lotor's return that something is wrong. Eventually by the end of the series Merla redeems herself and even earns her place as Coran's Royal Adviser once he's taken the throne.
This version of Merla is not only a good person with a personal love for Lotor, but she also has qualities that are similar to Allura and Lotor's other love interest in the series, Ven'tar. That being said, while I loved the romantic relationship between Lotor and Allura, I couldn't help the idea that perhaps this relationship wasn't as healthy as it actually could be. The reason being, did Lotor actually love Allura in that regard, or did he think he did when in actually she was simply connected to something he had always wanted, the alteans.
It wouldn't be false to say Lotor has chased after everything having to do with Altea and his mother, which only worsened as his animosity with his father and his people grew. This leads me to believe that while Allura is a wonderful person and has many qualities Lotor would find attractive, she may not actually be someone he'd pine for if he had the ability (and sanity) to choose. This makes me question if the altean's were never genocided nor was his mother deceased, would he have chosen Merla? Naturally so considering that allura would have been an adult by the time of his birth, but we're not gonna take that into consideration right now.
Personally, I'd say Merla is a perfect match for Lotor, given the examples and information in the post, but despite that, I don't really have an awnser to give other than my own opinion. This is why I feel this post to be more debatable than anything. There is no groundbreaking proof of my argument while there's also not much (to my research) that could debunk it. It's mainly an opinionated point that can be debated or agreed upon but never considered true or false. So my question stands. If he hadn't died, would Lotor have ended up with Merla and the end of Voltron?
--------------------------------------
Extra: This post isn't my best, but I still hope you enjoyed it.🖤💜❤️✨️

A list of my TTRPG OCs
Here's a bunch of them for reference if you ever want to send asks!
You can also find them with way more detail over on Toy.House!
Kesk Amanita (they/them) is a nonbinary minotaur cleric of the god of Plague & Outcasts. They survived a horrible magical disease with no known survivors at a very young age, losing their parents in the process, and were raised in the extremely remote mountaintop quarantine temple by the head of the religious order there, alongside his half-orc child Jukha. They are demi-romantic, asexual, intersex, and have vitiligo.
Reverence Trouble Malephar (he/him, yes the T does stand for Trouble) is an ex-mafia private eye. He is also a "paladin" of the same deity of Plague & Outcasts as Kesk, though they're from very different settings. I often use Trouble or Trubs to denote his younger mafia self from his older self, who I refer to as Reverence or Rev. He had a bad experience when he tried to skim money off his mafia grift and ended up getting his boyfriend and their team killed in front of him. He also had a girlfriend who disappeared after that and he finds out much later that he has twin kids with her: a daughter named Adventure and a (trans) son named Confidence. Reverence is cis, bi, and polyam.
Aeron Merla (he/him) is a Kenku Revenant and a rogue/warlock. He lived in the city of Avon's Keep and was a member of the local crime family (Cosa Corax) and the oldest of 14 kids. He was murdered by assassins from a rival group (Cosa Noctua). He was found and brought back by a creature called the Nachtraven, a generally malevolent fragment of the kenku deity The Raven Queen. He ran away from home to try and find a way to fix this because it's generally anathema to the worship of The Raven Queen to refuse death, but he still wants to live. He's kept alive by a small eye-parasite that the Nachtraven implanted in his slit throat. Aeron is cis and gay.
M'rai Scourgemaw (she/her) is a gnoll wild-soul barbarian. She was raised as a fighter to help out in the Three Scars War on behalf of a kingdom-state neighboring her homeland. She helped lead a group of trained mercenaries known as Blood Battalion, specializing in fighting magic-users. She was nearly killed by an immense major backlash in a fight and was left behind to heal by the Battalion. They never came back and the war finished while she was recovering, leading to her becoming her own merc and eventually getting arrested and thrown in jail. From there she escaped during a dragon attack, helped stop a coup that would restart the war, and discovered that she has a wellspring of raw wild magic within her now. Also she reconnected with the Battalion and her old flame, Amaranthe. M'rai is cis and gay.
Sidewinder (they/he) is a Yeremy Copperhead. The Yeremy are a culture of people indigenous to the continent of Ush'dvania, the home of the ancient Witch Kings. Yeremy wear masks to hide their true selves from strangers, so Sidewinder is almost never seen without his mask when around other people. Copperheads are alchemist-assassins and masters of poison and shadows. Sidewinder grew up wandering from place to place helping their mother with spirit-work and healing. They grew fascinated with magic and poisons and eventually moved to Ironwood, a small town on the frontier of the wastes, to set up a home and attract the attention of the Copperheads to earn the right to request membership. He has since: raided the secret warehouses of the powerful Havlan Trading Company at least 3 times, destroyed the entire Strychnine Syndicate's presence in Ironwood, unleashed a still-living Witch King, made friends, started dating the town deputy, and stuck his originally-normal arm in so much magic that eventually it had to be fully rebuilt.
Otylia Byalas (she/they) is a Trau Stitcher. The Trau are the fourth indigenous group from Ush'dvania and the only one that doesn't wear masks as a cultural practice. Or at least not physical masks; they culturally respond "I am but a humble [x]" to any particularly probing questions. Otylia and her fathers used to be just as nomadic as Sidewinder and his mother, and the two groups ran into each other fairly often on their travels, becoming friends. Otylia and Sidewinder dated briefly as teens, before deciding to remain as friends only. Otylia moved to a major city to attend medical school, and while there ran into trouble after turning to a life as a resurrectionist in order to properly gain experience. She fled to Ironwood and took up an apprenticeship under Doc Huxelby, becoming the medic on Sidewinder's team and helping him out with a little magi-medical problem as well.
Ori'Xiros (he/him) is a blue dragonborn draconic sorcerer. Orphaned at a very young age, he grew up on the streets of Port Estersall, a gaslamp fantasy city with Prohibition vibes. Helped along on the streets by a low-level thief, he learned about his magical ability and became determined to practice enough to turn himself into a real dragon, with which he is mildly obsessed. Then one day, while working for the thief, he stole from the wrong jewelry store and attracted the attention of a red dragonborn named Arkasi who took an interest in Ori. Not long after that, Ori was hired and given free room, board, and meals by a mysterious organization dedicated to hunting down dangerous magical items and protecting the world from them. Eventually he learned that Arkasi got him the job and that Arkasi was secretly a red dragon.
Exul & Velata (he/him for Exul, she/her for Velata) are two of the last surviving Nightbrothers and Nightsisters after the Dathomirian Massacres. They were originally slated to be paired according to Nightsister custom, but when the Nightsisters were decimated by the Sith, teenage Velata was told to flee into the forests and swamps to hide. When the Nightbrothers were attacked later, she broke her cover and dragged an injured Exul away from the fighting. Exul was heavily injured, and Velata scrambled to keep him alive, eventually hijacking a scavenger ship that came to investigate the now-quiet Dathomir, and fleeing off-world with Exul. They got Exul a black-market cybernetic heart implant to replace the heart he lost (zabrak have two hearts) and were forced into bounty hunting in order to pay back the loan that it took. Eventually they took a bounty on a pair of suspected ex-Jedi in hiding and were forcibly adopted by the two old Twi'lek ladies they ended up finding. Later they joined the Rebellion.
Telthe Baid (she/they/it) is a Harch demolitions expert. Drafted, as many Harch were during the pre-Empire era, into the military, Telthe specialized in explosives and ordnance engineering and while she started out in an artillery factor, she was soon deployed to the front lines as an advance saboteur and demolitionist. Not long after her deployment, her team was caught in an explosive ambush, and Telthe was one of the few survivors. The experience left her in a form of traumatic shock and not long after recovering physically, she went AWOL and deserted. Fleeing to Nar Shaddaa, Telthe set up a small business making explosives for bounty hunters until she was offered a position on a team of thieves working for a Hutt named Teemo. After several successful heists for Teemo, the Hutt eventually betrayed Telthe's team, attempting to kill them. The survivors planned out a revenge heist, emptying out Teemo's vaults...
...and leaving Telthe behind as a fall guy. Now betrayed by her team as well, she escaped from Teemo's dungeon with a group of rag-tags, and currently seeks revenge on her once-allies, especially the leader and her close confidante, Naash Vit. Oh and she lost her arm and partial use of one eye to an enemy sniper on one of the new team's missions.
Hide of the Beast (he/him)
Rok Merla (he/she/they/it)
Kol Fizzleblast (he/him)
Redemption Crosslaw (he/him)

Welcome to Voltron: Space Mice Rankings!!! Brought to you by me having so many thoughts about them (which I never thought would happen)
1. Beast King Golion (!!!) - The best version of the mice <3 They have wonderful personalities and are a family who a) love to help Fala (basically Allura) and the rest of the paladins, and b) want to help with the fight against the Galra. You have a father who is insistant on training his family how to fight because they are in a war, and his (a bit cowardly/lazy) family who doesn't want to train. But!! They are determined to fight for Altea and they do such a great job. It is mostly Princess Fala and Shorty who talk to the mice, and they did so by learning their language. Also!!!! The mice get a super cute mini mech that they use to fight <3 And they get actual plotpoints because Honerva tries to infultrate the castle multiple times but she is scared of mice (which is why she has her cat), so it causes problems. None of the other shows use the mice in any plot relevant way. Also, this is the only version of the mice that I think about often <3
2. Voltron: Legendary Defender - I think Allura having mice telepathy is so cool and epic. It's a great addition to voltron, and I wish they had done literally anything fun with it throughout the show (but that was sadly never going to happen). I get excited whenever they show the mice doing silly things with Allura. The mice themselves dont have any distinct personalities, and are very flat, forgettable characters (I have actually forgotten about their existance multiple times). The designs themselves are interesting, but lack the familial element that were there in Golion (and I miss it dearly). I just wish there was a trait that connected them a bit more, like all of them having a connecting ear shape or marking.
3. Voltron: Defender of the Universe - My general thoughts about this show is that it's like if Golion was worse, and this theme continues with the mice. No one is able to speak directly to the mice and have conversations, which is very sad, and they got rid of us being able to tell what the mice were saying. Which means that their space mice episode was boring (in comparison) because you couldn't hear their conversations and silly dialogue!! The only thing they have going for them at that point is that they're cute (but also it's the same design in Golion-)
4. Voltron Force - Eh. They're robot mice. Idk what else to say, they're just kinda boring. I can appreciate wanting to switch it up and make them robots, but I want my space mice to have personality. The show breaks the fourth wall and ponders why they're called space mice when they are from Arus and were named by Arusians, but thats the only notable thing about them.
And there it is!!! If you want to see the mice in their bestest form ever then watch Beast King Golion ep 46, where the mice help fight the Galra in their mech (absolute icons!!!)
#i do not remember any mice in The Third Dimension but also i feel like the mice were robots in two versions#if they were in the third dimension then just pretend they werent#also- i like DotU in the sense that the dialogue and pacing is awkward in a really funny way#and (of course) everything to do with queen merla#im obsessed with the way she interacts with everyone (but specifically lotor)#space mice#voltron#voltron watching#idk if anyone is actually going to read this but if you did i hope you enjoyed!!
