Book Review for Not Like Other Girls

Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Audience: 9th-12th Grade

Medium: Audiobook

Summary: Not Like Other Girls by Meredith Adamo follows Jo-Lynn Kirby- a social pariah after being a victim of revenge porn. Things don't go any easier for her when she now must find her ex best friend who has gone missing.

Justification: I chose this book because I had already read it and really enjoyed it as it is so much more than a mystery/thriller novel. I now wanted to see how it would hold up as an audiobook and its narrator as oftentimes this format can change one's perception of the book. Lastly, I typically prefer ebooks or physical books so an audiobook is something that I wanted to try out.

Evaluation of Format: Not Like Other Girls translated well from text to audio. This is largely due to the audiobook's narrator making the listener feel as if Jo herself is there to tell her story. This format really highlights the serious nature that some of the topics in the book explores as the narrators voice reflected the trauma that Jo has experienced. Also, the narrator would use accents to help the listener distinguish between the different characters which proved to be useful.

Evaluation of Writing: Meredith Adamo writing style is raw and vulnerable. Adamo has a way of writing about trauma that shows rather than tells as it is displayed through how a character reacts to it rather than describing the events itself. It's not overly graphic and allows the reader to think about the person instead of the action. Also, this book is told in first person, which can appeal to teens as it may feel like their peer is telling them the story instead of some higher authority.

Evaluation of Characters: The main characters in the book are all complex and truly speak to how complicated it is to be a young adult. Throughout the book, Jo grapples with being confident in her sexuality and all the unwanted attention and judgement it garners. Jo's character makes the reader really think about how slut shaming can affect a young girl who is becoming an adult. Also, the way men are portrayed is interesting as the reader never really knew which men were decent or not.

Working at one of the nation’s leading teaching hospitals means there are certain extra requirements expected of the staff, one of these being helping out other hospitals from time to time. It’s usually a simple affair, as simple as surgery can be. Arrive, do the surgery, get back on a flight to Seattle. Unless of course they never make it there. Unless their plane crashes. Stranded somewhere in the wilderness that surrounds Spokane and all of the passengers injured in some way, there’s only so much the doctors can do. They have to wait. WAIT. Somebody will realise that they’re not in Boise, they’ll phone the hospital and the search will begin. They’ll be safe, they just have to wait. And maybe that would be the case if, meanwhile in Seattle, the hospital wasn’t indidated with patients. An office building in West Seattle collapsed twenty minutes before the plane went down, the ER is packed and ORs in a constant rotation between injured employees and firefighters. With almost the entire staff on call and too distracted to pick up phones or question where their colleagues might be, the waiting might be longer than they first anticipated.

When the chaos of the emergency has calmed down, only then is it clear that no plane from Seattle ever landed in Boise. The legal team are thrown into a FRENZY, the Chief of Staff and the Chief of Surgery must explain to the board what exactly has happened, how they could let it go unnoticed for so long, and - most importantly - what they’re doing to find the MISSING SURGEONS. It’s been close to twenty-four hours, they’ll need to act fast if they have a hope of their colleagues coming back alive.

OOC INFO: It’s finally here! After weeks of planning, we are happy (or maybe not so happy?) to announce that the plane crash will be taking place Monday 14th of December (4PM EST)  - Sunday 20th of December (4PM EST). This event will be split into two parts, with Monday to Thursday seeing the plane crash victims stranded and injured while those remaining at Seattle Grace Mercy West deal with the buildings collapse and moving along to the aftermath of the crash when the survivors have been found Friday through to Sunday. Plotting may now officially begin, the admins have created a discord for the muns who will be involved with the crash - you will be receiving your invite shortly! Underneath the cut you’ll find not only injuries from the crash, but also how your muse at the hospital has been delegated. If your character is not on the list you may still participate in the event, they just haven’t been delegated to a surgery and may be in the pit or with routine patients!

Cormac Hayes has woken up on the forest floor, he can’t remember how he got there. And he might be more concerned about that fact if not for the agonising pain that shoots through his hand every time he tried to move it. It doesn’t feel like a sprain or a broken bone, it feels like nerve damage.

When Elena Sloan finally came to, she didn’t immediately realise what was wrong with her, or why she could no longer feel her arm. It was only when she turned her head to inspect it that she realised that she’d passed out from the pain of being crushed underneath a part of the plane’s wing.

It might seem as though Derek Shepherd has gotten off lightly. Some scratches, minor burns and he’s guessing that he has a mild concussion from the pounding in his head. What he doesn’t realise yet, with the adrenaline coursing through his veins, is that he’s exhibiting early signs of PTSD.

AJ Murphy finds himself in a pretty similar boat, the only external injuries being scratches and burns. However, considering he’s floating in and out of consciousness his concussion might be more severe than Shepherd’s.

Mia Porter has been staring at her leg since the moment she regained consciousness. More accurately she’s staring at the femur that has broken and punctured through the skin. She has an open fracture and is sitting on a dirty forest floor, there’s only so much time before infection becomes an issue.

Outwardly, there seems to be very little wrong with Ximena Avery, and perhaps the dizziness or sudden headache can all be attributed to the stress of the crash. However, the numbness on the left side of her body? The growing pain in her abdomen? It seems likely to be an internal injury.

The crash has left Cat Blake with a large cut on her arm which might not be so concerning, especially considering the more severe injuries surrounding her, if it wasn’t for the debris that had gathered in the wound while she was unconscious.

When she’d first regained consciousness and realised that the plane crashing hadn’t been a vivid nightmare, Leah Murphy did a quick assessment of herself. She’d thought she was fine all things considered, until she’d tried to stand and her broken fibula had caused her knees to buckle and her body to crash to the ground again.

Waking up initially still trapped inside the plane had been enough to distract Nico Kim from the searing pain on the right side of his body, but once he was safely out of the aircraft the agony of his broken ribs and fractured ulna had taken full effect.

Grey's Anatomy: 10 Hidden Details About The Main Characters Everyone Completely Missed

Grey's Anatomy is such a long-running series that it inevitably is packed with several small details, hidden meanings, and easter eggs that are easy to miss since they are scattered throughout fifteen seasons. This show has many complex, lovable characters that have carried it for a decade and a half.

Through countless changes such as losing several cast and crew members throughout the years, Grey's Anatomy has always managed to make things interesting and keep viewers on their toes.

The key to keeping the audience coming back for more every week, to keep them speculating and immersed in the show, Grey's had to have some pretty fascinating characters. And that it did. The best thing about the doctors of Grey Sloan is that they are firmly rooted in realism and they make the fans feel close to them.

We know these characters well, but let's take a look at some hidden details you may not have noticed before.

10 IZZIE'S NICKNAME

Izzie had a very interesting past that was touched on in the first season of Grey's. Alex took to belittling her over the fact that she was a model, but Izzie's past was later revealed to be much more complex than it appeared. Katherine Heigl's lovable character dug her way out of a trailer park and gave up a child in order to pursue her medical career.

Another tidbit about Izzie's past is her mother. The two had a complicated, rather odd relationship. One notable thing about this was that Izzie's mom constantly called her "Cricket." This is never explained, but it's a cute detail.

9 MEREDITH'S SIMILARITIES TO ELLIS

To this day, some people and coworkers become intimidated by Meredith when they realize that she is Ellis Grey's daughter - the Ellis Grey. Ellen Pompeo has done an amazing job of portraying Meredith for over fifteen years, and one thing she absolutely nails is portraying Ellis' daughter.

Meredith constantly conveys traits similar to those of her mother's, whether subtle or completely obvious. Through mannerisms, decisions, ambition, and strength, Meredith and Ellis make a very believable mother and daughter.

8 MAGGIE'S QUIRKS

Maggie is best known for being a child prodigy, attending medical school at an extremely young age and excelling at a rapid pace. She became a cardiothoracic surgeon in no time and everyone was shocked to see such a young woman when she applied for the position of Chief of Cardio at Grey Sloan.

Since Maggie's intelligence has far surpassed pretty much any of her other traits, some quirks are expected. But Maggie is one of the most unique characters when it comes to some strange mannerisms and patterns of speech.

7 ALEX'S INCONSISTENT PAST

Alex has quite the sordid past, and his childhood was one of the most abusive and troubled out of any other character's. Alex's evolution was iconic and touching, and throughout the episodes that Grey's has focused on him over the years, they've barely touched on his past.

We know a few things about Alex's history and the rest of the Karev family, but some of those details seem to get mixed up and scrambled in a few episodes.

6 JO'S INCONSISTENT PAST

Similar to Alex, Jo is another question mark when it comes to her past. We know that she's struggled, we know that she had a horrible forced marriage and to escape it, she changed her identity. But we don't know much more than that.

Grey's Anatomy has dedicated the majority of entire episodes to Jo and the storyline with her ex-husband, Paul Sadler. But the series has yet to delve much deeper.

5 THE BLURRED HISTORY OF CATHERINE AND RICHARD

Catherine was introduced at a time where Richard was still working on his marriage to Adele, so he turned down Catherine's blatant attempts to win him over. Yet the two seemed to have quite a history, and as time went on, Richard eventually reunited with Catherine during Adele's battle for Alzheimer's, and the two promptly became an item.

Catherine and Richard's history appeared to be a complex one, and perhaps they were even more than friends at some point in the past.

4 APRIL'S RELIGION

A strange thing about April Kepner was her shortlived first appearance on the show back in season 6. When the Mercy West residents moved over to Seattle Grace, none of them were exactly likable - least of all April. The sweet, soft-spoken April Kepner that we all know and love was nowhere to be found when she was first introduced on the show.

To make this even stranger, April also never mentioned anything about her religion for quite some time. Her Christianity and beliefs were just randomly touched on several episodes after she became a series regular.

3 JACKSON'S HEREDITARY ISSUES

Jackson's character has gone through little development and changes since he was first introduced in Grey's Anatomy's sixth season. His behavior still tends to be selfish and immature, and he still has a very obvious superiority complex.

One detail about Jackson is that he often talks about wanting to distance himself from the Avery family as a whole, and he seems to be under the impression that he is somehow the "good" Avery.

2 THE HISTORY OF DEREK AND ADDISON

Grey's Anatomy introduced the notorious, soon-to-be fan-favorite, Addison Montgomery, in the last few minutes of the season 1 finale. Addison not only took Seattle Grace by storm, but she captivated audiences' hearts in no time.

Derek and Addison's relationship was a very turbulent and dysfunctional one, but when they mention their past together, it's presented with a very different vibe. It seems to be the Grey's writers' intention to make it feel as though Addison and Derek had their own little world, and Meredith was an outsider looking in.

1 HOW MEREDITH RAISES HER KIDS

Meredith's parenting skills obviously far surpass those of her mother's, but upon close inspection, they're still pretty questionable. The main thing is the fact that Meredith is a mother of three young children, and yet it feels as though she rarely ever sees them.

With this in mind, Grey's could be deliberately paralleling Meredith's story to her own mother's; conveying Meredith choosing her work time and time again.

Jeff Bezos keeps Amazon voting power in divorce settlement

(Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos will retain voting control of his entire $143 billion stake in the company under a divorce settlement with his wife, MacKenzie Bezos, who will own 25 percent of those shares, the couple said on Thursday, removing uncertainty over control of the online retailer.

The world’s richest couple had announced their impending divorce in a joint Twitter statement in January, causing some to worry that Jeff Bezos could wind up with less Amazon voting power or that he or MacKenzie would liquidate large positions.

“It takes the issue off the table, with less turbulence than you might have expected,” said an investor, whose company owns several million dollars worth of Amazon shares yet who asked for anonymity because of a firm policy.

MacKenzie Bezos will wind up with a stake in Amazon that is worth roughly $36 billion. Her shares represent a 4 percent stake in Amazon, according to a regulatory filing by the company. The Amazon shares will make her the world’s third-richest woman while Jeff Bezos will remain the world’s richest person, according to Forbes.

The couple, who tweeted separately on Thursday, disclosed that under their settlement MacKenzie will donate up her interests in the Washington Post, which Jeff Bezos bought in 2013 & which has been a frequent target of criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, & the rocket company Blue Origin he founded in 2000.

“Grateful to have finished the process of dissolving my marriage with Jeff,” MacKenzie Bezos said in her tweet outlining the agreement, the first & only post from an account created this month.

The two did not provide any further financial details approximately the settlement.

“INFLUENCE WOULD BE THE SAME”

Amazon, the world’s biggest online retailer, said in the filing that 4 percent of its outstanding shares would be registered in MacKenzie Bezos’ name after court approval of the divorce, which is expected to occur in approximately 90 days.

The petition for divorce was filed in Washington state, a person familiar with the matter said.

Jeff Bezos, whom Amazon listed in its most recent proxy statement as its single largest shareholder with a 16.3 percent stake, will keep sole voting authority over the shares unless MacKenzie donates them to a nonprofit or sells them in the open market.

Amazon shares closed down 0.1 percent at $1,818.86.

Jeff Bezos, 55, is seen as fundamental to Amazon’s meteoric growth & stock price rise since he founded the company as an online bookseller in 1994. He has credited MacKenzie, 48, for her support when he uprooted the young couple to Seattle from New York to launch Amazon.

“When I think approximately Amazon, & the influence Bezos has on Amazon, I would argue his influence would be the same whether he had 51 percent shares outstanding or 1 percent. I think his influence is dictated by his vision for Amazon,” D.A. Davidson analyst Tom Forte said.

MacKenzie Bezos’ stake in Amazon is worth more than the market values of nearly 70 percent of the components of the S&P 500.

The settlement suggests that Amazon will be spared the kind of boardroom battle that has plagued other companies whose owners are dealing with family rifts, even though the divorce had jolted the once-private Bezos couple into the public spotlight.

Jeff Bezos re-tweeted MacKenzie’s statement & added in a separate post that he was grateful “for her support & for her kindness in this process.”

Liat Sadler, a San Francisco matrimonial lawyer, said the settlement should put investors at ease.

“They’ve done a lot of work behind the scenes to make their breakup as amicable as it seems,” she said. Still, Sadler added, “Without knowing what cash she received, I have no idea how favorable it was to him or not.”

The day the couple announced their separation on Twitter, the National Enquirer promised to reveal an affair by Jeff Bezos that it claimed had ended their marriage, opposite to the couple’s statement that they were on a “long period of loving exploration & trial separation.”

The U.S. tabloid then published alleged photos & intimate text messages between Bezos & his new partner, former television news anchor Lauren Sanchez.
