Ardyn hadn't seen the Javelyn aimed at his body as he chatted with his oracle. Fortunately she had, Trident deflecting the weapon into the water with ease. She looked filled with the fury of leviathan herself as she dealt with the fisherman and sent them in shackles with the guards. Ardyn was too impressed to be worried about his close call.

So yesterday, I finished listening to the audiobook of The Wizard in my Shed - The Misadventures of Merdyn the Wild by Simon Farnaby and I can't recommend it highly enough. It made me laugh more times than I can count, sometimes because of something that was written, sometimes because of the way it's narrated, and sometimes for no other reason than Simon's choice of voice for one of the characters (Bubbles, my beloved). I adore the humour, the bits of history peppered throughout the story, the characters with their struggles and quirks and, most of all, how heartfelt the whole book is.

It is a children's book, yes, so some things were predictable but that did in no way lessen the joy of listening to it. I can't wait to start the second book and go on another adventure with Rose, Merdyn and, of course, Bubbles.

They are the perfect mixture of references to other six idiots projects, facts about history and a great story that isn't predictable and so funny!

Parties and large social gatherings were never Aera's forte. Even after coming to Altissia and becoming familiar with the social formalities of the floating city, the oracle still loathed going to such advents. She wished for nothing more to return to her home and loom; however, she was here to show face. At least she wasn't here alone.

Ardyn had decided to accompany her to this evening's festivities. Aera was grateful for his company; she wasn’t sure if it was because of his height or his muscular build, but people tended to keep their distance. But every so often, there would be one brave soul that would approach the pair. Usually, it was a few polite words of conversation before losing their nerve and excusing themselves. But tonight, they were approached by someone different.  

Count Marius Chavalerio was one of Aera’s former suiters. In the early months after meeting Ardyn, he would try and sing to her in a gondola outside her garden. It was, in a word, Interesting. Especially since he somehow managed to flip over in his boat every time. However, after her relationship with Ardyn went public, the count backed off somewhat, but not completely. Whenever Aera attended parties, he would often single her out subtlety pursuing her as if nothing has changed. 

“Lady Aera, such a surprise to find you here! I thought you were busy paying to the Tide Mother.” Marius gave Aera a smile that made her skin crawl. 

“The Tide Mother’s festival isn’t until next week,” she answered politely, “ so we were free to attend tonight's celebration.” She motioned to Ardyn when she said, ‘we’ to lay down the hidden point. 

But sadly, it appears Marius missed this as he pressed forward. “Oh! If that’s the case, then-” he was suddenly cut off by a low rumble. 

Aera blinked as she felt Ardyn’s broad arm wrap around her waist and pull her securely to his side.  She looked up and noticed a set glare on his face; unsure what was going on, Aera leaned into him and then looked back over at Marius. The count had turned extremely pale, much to her continued confusion. Her eyes moved between the two before the Count hurriedly excused himself. 

"I wonder what happened...” She murmured.

Noctis looked at his scales and then back down at the water.

"They're real," he breathed. "Mom said, but; I thought it was the cancer talking..." He looked down at his feet which had become two large flippers.

"This is so weird."

Ardyn laughed at what Noctis said. Not without kindness. Though he enjoyed the wonder on the boy's face over his appendages.

"Much of the fantastic has been lost to the human world," He said. "I'm happy to show you how it is though. Some nice swimming lessons!"

Ardyn is already in the water himself, Elegant tail moving lazily as he floats around the surface.

☕️- Classic AU (Bookshop)

Nigel was nervous when he opened the door to Button Books. It was a tiny shop that had obviously seen better days, one he'd normally walk past without a second glance. It was also his last hope of finding the book his niece had asked for for her birthday, so he took a deep breath and stepped inside. A little bell rang and the young man behind the counter looked up and offered him a polite smile. He looked handsome in his brown vest and white shirt, and Nigel quickly ducked into the cramped aisle of the children's section before his gaze lingered too long. He looked for Cecily's book - "It's the first Merdyn the Wild book, Uncle Nigel." - but struggled to read the titles when the letters began to blur together.

"May I help you, sir?" the shopkeeper suddenly asked from behind him.

Nigel knew he'd never find the book without help - if it was even here - so he swallowed his embarrassment and told the shopkeeper what he was looking for.

"It's right here," the shopkeeper said and reached for a book that was right in front of Nigel's eyes. The relief was so overwhelming in that moment- He has it! - that Nigel didn't even realise he started rambling - "Thank you so much!" And "Sorry, I have trouble reading." And "It's my niece's birthday today and I was sick last week and couldn't get. the book sooner" And "You're a lifesaver!" - until the shopkeeper steered him towards a chair, told him to sit and pressed a fresh cup of tea into his hands.

Later, Nigel learned that the man's name was Thomas and that his co-owners - his cousin of all people, and the woman he'd loved - had opened up another business elsewhere, one more promising than a bookshop. "That's why the place looks so rundown. We planned to renovate it but without Francis and Isabelle ..."

The heavy sigh that followed made Nigel's heart ache. So did the revelation that Thomas used to be a poet who self-published his poems before the world told him he wasn't good enough. Without thinking about it, Nigel added his collection of works to Cecily's book.

"I liked the one about the sunrise the best," he told Thomas a week later when he went back to the shop. And then, trying to be brave, he asked, "Would you read it for me?"

The smile Thomas gave him was the loveliest Nigel had ever seen.

“That’s mistletoe it’s hung during Yuletide to keep evil spirits from entering the home.”

Aera had just returned from her garden with a basket full of figs and a few large slices of pecorino cheese. She was dressed loosely today, only wearing her usual dress, and her deep burgundy palla draped around her shoulders like a shaw. It wasn't often Aera was able to wear more than white. When she became Oracle, Aera had to adhere to the temple's ways of wearing strictly white in and outside its walls. The only time she could wear color outside of her own home was after she married. And she didn't see that happening anytime soon- not without the right person, of course. 

"They're hung in every entrance of the home," she explained, approaching the doorway in an amble manner unbothered by the cool stone floor against her feet.

“And-” Aera stopped just below the mistletoe- “if two people stand below it, they are to kiss- for good luck.” She hummed, looking up at Ardyn expectantly and giving him one of her playful smiles as she clasped her hands and basket behind her back.
