This is one of my favorite times of year. It’s really fun to wake up in a huge medieval tent city and walk to our medieval Merchant tent :) #SCA #pennsic #merchantlife #pottery #pathlesstraveled #doinglifemyway (at Pennsic War) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0qVfxjAcGw/?igshid=19r19va61zk5t

Risk It All or Keep Your Day Job? - A Step Towards Career Independence
Tumblr media
With entrepreneurship being promoted so frequently with "those Youtube ads" and today's social media motivational merchants, how do you truly make that step to career-independence? Should you risk it all, or keep your day job? The comfort of receiving a regular income especially if you have responsibilities, makes a day-job vastly more attractive than pursuing a business career. You go to work, Monday to Friday from the 1st to 30th, and as long as you stay out of trouble and don't get fired, you get paid! You pay your bills, buy a loved one a gift and save whatever you can at the end. You continue this process month on month hoping a surprise never disturbs this dance you have going on. Then one day at your retirement party you quietly ask yourself, "Where did all the time go? Feels like I only left university a few years ago". But what if you decide to scrap the day-job and focus on being your own boss. Money isn't guaranteed and you can't afford to be short at the end of the month when your bills are due. Long hours with little or no reward is what you're likely to face at the start of this journey, but you believe that your business idea can work...eventually. So what should you do? The best approach is to measure what "risk it all" means to you. If the potential damage to your life from leaving your day-job is too significant, whilst the rewards are not yet attainable, then keep your day job. Don't lose your house trying to sell hats with 10 website views per day. If however, you don't stand much to lose, especially from a 1 year gamble, then maybe you should consider taking the risk. If it fails, you haven't lost much if anything at all, and you can go back to drawing board. Check out what Business Insider had to say on this topic     Read the full article

First Stop: Eurasian Silk Roads
Me: *stumbling around; location: somewhere in China; spots two men coming my way* Hello! I'm looking for the Silk Road. Would you be able to help me, kind sirs?
Kind Sirs: *chuckle* Well, you're already in a part of it!
Me: Really? How do you know?
Kind Sirs: We're Chinese merchants; we go through this area often on our trading "expeditions".
Me: No way! That's so awesome. You guys must be experts about the Silk Road then.
Merchants: You could say that...
Me: So what kinds of things do you guys trade through the Silk Road?
Merchant 1: Silk, obviously. There's a big focus on trading luxuries.
Merchant 2: And lots of other things, too. Gunpowder, paper, cotton, medicines, stones, bamboo, gold, olive oil, dyes, you name it!
Me: Is all that trading safe?
Merchant 1: Well, it can be dangerous at times. But trade has really picked up after a couple powerful states started providing security for travelers and merchants. It's a lot safer now.
Me: So tell me more about the silk. Where does it come from? Who makes it?
Merchant 2: China has a monopoly on silk production; the process for making it still remains a secret! The Chinese silk trade provides jobs for women who are mainly responsible for making it. They're large contributors to the economy.
Merchant 1: Above all, however, the most important things that are traded are ideas.
Me: Ideas? Huh?
Merchant 2: Yes, ideas! You know, ideas related with culture, religion, art, etc.
Merchant 1: For example, Buddhism spread from India throughout Asia through merchants, blocking off the spread of Persian Zoroastrianism, and changed from Theravada to Mahayana Buddhism. We personally are Mahayana Buddhists.
Me: I thought Chinese people all followed Confucianism...
Merchant 2: We actually did before, but merchants aren't viewed favorably in Confucianism, whereas Buddhism is more appealing to us. Mahayana Buddhism focuses on compassion, Bodhisattvas, and the divinity of Buddha. It's pretty chill.
Me: Sounds cool. So is there any physical evidence of the influence of Buddhism in China?
Merchant 1: Just down the road, there's a monastery with Buddhist statues made in Gandhara style.
Merchant 2: There's also a huge statue of Buddha on the way. Do you want to go check them out?
Me: Of course!

Tumblr media
In part 1 of our interview with Manny Adz, the young entrepreneur introduced us to his early life growing up in South London, as well as his early motivations behind pursuing a business journey. Manny is one of the founding members of the radio debating show He Says She Says, which focuses on tackling a variety of topics, both from a male and female perspective. Manny spoke about his passion for having thought-provoking discussions among his friends, and how this inspired him to create a platform for others to also get involved. Manny explained – “There would be a few of us at the table at work and we would debate religion, relationships and other topics" He Says She Says is not only a radio show though. The brand has also delivered YouTube series which allow the viewers to see the faces and personalities behind the voices. Check out part 1 of Manny's interview above! Read the full article
