Are webs edible?
- @tf-au-mer-osborn
Depends on multiple factors, such as the following:
Webbing being biological or artificial
Chemical make-up
If you’re from a universe where everything is edible
Allergies
There’s also the question of non-toxic v. actually edible, but that’s neither here nor there.

fish cleaner reader who is just hanging out in a giant fish's mouth. Platonic yans turn around for like 10 seconds and just see reader inside of a great white, and reader is constantly trying to crawl into fish mouths for food.
They'd be so worried- Reader, get OUT of that animal's mouth, they're DANGEROUS-! No, that does NOT make good food for guppies/pups! NO, do NOT adopt that shark as a pet!!!
They'd all be scrambling to keep Reader away from the various large and scary fish that come by, all while trying to get Reader to eat better food options. They're met with a confused guppy who doesn't understand why they shouldn't help an eel or a shark or a barracuda clean up their mouth and teeth, and they don't understand that won't give them a full meal. How is their kid still alive?? Why do they keep scaring them like this??
Good news: the animals don't eat Reader, and are protective of them. Bad news: they won't leave, or if they do, they always come back...
At least they are nice pets...?

A redesign of Noir in the mer au. He still has the necklace that turns him human, and he uses his ability to gain legs to help May, Miguel, Ham, PB, Jess, and sometimes Miles (who can also turn his tail into legs, but more inherrent magic than an outside item.)
He's the biggest mer there, his tail itself it longer than the second biggest mer's entire body by a few feet. In his human form, he's unusually tall.
Despite being a shark mer, specifically a more cold water, deep sea, monster of a subspecies of shark mer, he can kind of swim backwards with help of his arms. He can be bioluminesent, and the glow of his markings often change colour. It's typically white, but he'll switch through colours when he's got an emotion to display.
Unfortunately, he still has a hook in his tail from a childhood fishing accident, but he's stubborn to a fault so he doesn't trust anyone to come near his tail. He also has a bad habit of playfully bumping into Hobie when they're swimming together, so it's not uncommon to see one of Hobie's spines in his side and Benj high off his tiny mind on lionfish mer toxins

204th edit and because it is May, and commonly Non-Disney editors dub this Mer-May, as shown in these video link and here too (huge shoutout to @myhollie1911 hosting these two huge video crossovers of MANY editors)*, I thought I would make myself with She-Hulk, one of my first huge animated crushes growing up. I just adore the 1996′s Incredible Hulk: Animated Series depiction of Jennifer Walters. I am aware the freckles on “me” look pretty pale, which in real life not all of them are, but I feel far away like this looks okay. Sadly too, the cartoon version of me is facing forward so could not include my tattoos on my back and shoulder blade area.

Listen. This is a fun story, but it is not real. You cannot take the tall tales your dive instructor tells you at face value. Dive instructors are basically that one grizzled old pirate at the end of the bar trading ghost stories for shots of rum. They ARE fucking with you.
Nitrogen narcosis is dangerous, but it's not shrooms. It's more like being tipsy. The primary danger is forgetting how to operate your dive equipment because you are a stupid drunk person. Divers call it "Martini's law" because once symptoms start, you feel about a martini drunker for every 10 meters deeper you go.
Nitrogen narcosis happens to everybody to some extent, but the severity of reaction varies between people and between dives, largely determined by things like body weight and blood chemistry. It's like anesthesia or alcohol tolerance. Solving a math problem once at depth doesn't demonstrate that you're narc-proof; it just means you didn't get narc'd that time. You can be totally fine at 100ft on one dive and then get narc'd at 40ft on another. And if you go deep enough, it WILL happen to you. There's even a set hand gesture that means "I've got nitrogen narcosis" (it's the "crazy" one, with the index finger circling your ear); that's how common it is.
We also know exactly why it happens. It's because most gases have some narcotic properties, and the way air compresses at depth means that when you breathe down there, you're taking in a larger amount of all those gases per breath than you would be at the surface (this is also why your tank empties faster the deeper you go; the same tank that lasts an hour at 20ft will only last like 15 minutes at 90). Like most drugs, more intake means stronger effects, so regular air starts affecting you like laughing gas when you breathe it under pressure. Nitrogen is the one that kicks in first. This is why deep sea divers use a different mix of gases than casual divers do; if they tried to use the regular stuff, they would all be high af on nitrogen, and you do not want to be high when your life depends on being able to maintain neutral buoyancy and accurately track time and depth.
For context: nitrogen narcosis has happened to me personally! I am advanced open water certified, meaning I can dive to 100ft, and I have done so on several occasions with no issue. I have also been narc'd twice, both at 60ish ft. For me it basically felt like a panic attack, because it is very scary to be 60ft underwater and suddenly notice you're kinda drunk. But I still knew who and where I was and that all I had to do was ascend a little bit. It's not LSD.
I know people on tumblr looove stories of underwater cave diving, but I haven't seen anyone talk about nitrogen narcosis aka "raptures of the deep"
basically when you want to get your advanced scuba certification (allowing you to go more than 60 feet deep) you have to undergo a very specific test: your instructor takes you down past the 60+ foot threshold, and she brings a little underwater white board with her.
she writes a very basic math problem on that board. 6 + 15. she shows it to you, and you have to solve it.
if you can solve it, you're good. that is the hardest part of the test.
because here's what happens: there is a subset of people, and we have no real idea why this happens only to them, who lose their minds at depth. they're not dying, they're not running out of oxygen, they just completely lose their sense of identity when deep in the sea.
a woman on a dive my instructor led once vanished during the course of the excursion. they were diving near this dropoff point, beyond which the depth exceeded 60 feet and he'd told them not to go down that way. the instructor made his way over to look for her and found a guy sitting at the edge of the dropoff (an underwater cliff situation) just staring down into the dark. the guy is okay, but he's at the threshold, spacing out, and mentally difficult to reach. they try to communicate, and finally the guy just points down into the dark, knowing he can't go down there, but he saw the woman go.
instructor is deep water certified and he goes down. he shines his light into the dark, down onto the seafloor which is at 90 feet below the surface. he sees the woman, her arms locked to her sides, moving like a fish, swimming furiously in circles in the pitch black.
she is hard to catch but he stops her and checks her remaining oxygen: she is almost out, on account of swimming a marathon for absolutely no reason. he is able to drag her back up, get her to a stable depth to decompress, and bring her to the surface safely.
when their masks are off and he finally asks her what happened, and why was she swimming like that, she says she fully, 100% believed she was a mermaid, had always been a mermaid, and something was hunting her in the dark 👍
#Mer-madness is a fun idea but tbh the realities of narcosis are way scarier to me#Like yeah seeing the kraken would be freaky but what if you decided to take out your respirator for funsies#Or ran out of air because you were too busy marveling at how sand is just tiny rocks to check your tank gauge#The ocean doesn't need hallucinogens to kill you; it just needs you to be off your guard for a sec :)

Merry Christmas second boss, hope you enjoy them!
- @tf-au-mer-osborn
Miguel sinks into his office chair, somehow weary before the workday's even started.
Then again, most days have been like that lately.
It takes him a moment to well and truly register the man's presence and what he's giving him. How many times has he said he doesn't want any holiday fuss?
Still. For posterity's sake-- and admittedly, so he stops getting grinch remarks-- he gives a very tight smile and a muttered 'thank you'.

based on my last ask, i imagine it going a few different ways depending on who shows up
someone like Charles and/or possibly his mate (?) who i can see sitting and talking to reader to give them the chance to make the right choice, perhaps he brought a few of the other platonic yans as backup to catch them if on the off chance reader makes the wrong choice, if they do it’s ok everyone makes mistakes sometimes and their still just a guppy afterall
maybe someone like rouge and gambit show up? someone who’s perfectly capable of sweet talking and coddling reader right back into the nest where they belong maybe a little manipulative but anything to get their petite (i think i spelled that right?) back home with the rest of their siblings, they sure won’t be able to get away with that trick again though
or perhaps someone a bit more brash and straight to the point like logan shows up someone who is can see just taking reader back to the nest first and focusing on the inevitable talk after their both home where they’re safe with the rest of their family
Oooooooooo... I like it!
It's quiet, waiting for them to approach them. The waves crash softly onto the shore, the birds are quiet, and the sand clumps between their toes.
Heh.
They missed this.
Reader feels themself sobering, going back to defensive, when the caretakers and older guppies approach them.
Hmmm... Just Logan, and Rogue and Remy right now... But they know they aren't the only ones there. They can see a ripple across the water, can faintly hear the slither of scales and fins against wet sand...
Reader doesn't want to go.
But they aren't given much choice.
"C'mon, kid. We need ta get back. Yer siblings are waitin' fer ya," Logan grumbles, gesturing for Reader to get up. Reader doesn't know how he can switch between siren and human forms so easily, but it shouldn't surprise them, really.
Reader shakes their head, staring out at the water. "I... I don't want to go..."
"Kid, pup, we need ta go. This isn't tha place ta have this talk," Logan tries, but Reader makes a pained noise and suddenly he's sitting dowj next to them. "Okay, okay... Why don't ya want ta leave? Yer not in danger, kid... Ya know that, don'tcha?" Reader nods hesitantly, a frown on their lips.
"I... this is my life. I don't want to abandon it. It's... it's mine. Just because I can, what, turn into a fish person now, doesn't mean I want to give everything else up! I just... This is all I know. I... I don't want to leave it..." Reader sighs. They can feel tears entering their eyes, and they can hear the tremble in their own voice. "I don't want to go..."
A hand rubs gently at their back, and soon Reader is crying, curling in on themself. They don't want to be seen so vulnerable, so upset, by someone who kidnapped them, or by the other guppies, or by any of them. But they can't hold it in any longer, and it pours out like a drowning torrent.
"Shhhhh... Shhhhhh... It'll be okay, kid. Just get it out. That's it, just breathe, let it all out," coaches Logan, who's still there, pulling them against him into a sidehug. His warmth feels nice, especially in the rough chill of the early morning. "We can go back ta tha nest and let yer hatchmates see ya, yeah? I'm sure they'd cheer ya up. They wouldn't want ya ta be sad. C'mon, guppy, let's go," he whispers softly, going to scoop Reader up. Yet the moment Reader feels his hands scooping under them, ready to take then back into the ocean, they panic, and in one swift motion-
PLOP!
They fall out of them, running across the beach.
They dodge past Remy and Rogue, who try to follow, both trying to calm them, but Reader doesn't want to be calm, they want to go home, home where they're not a siren and they aren't being chased and where everything makes sense. They make it, just a bit farther up the sand dunes, before something tackles them from behind.
Reader kicks, crying out as they feel themself tugged into a large, vice-like grip.
" 'M sorry, kid... But ya aren't runnin' back ta tha humans. Yer gonna come back, you are goin' straight to tha nest, and yer stayin' there. Ya do not run from me. Ya do not run from us. We are yer caretakers, and that means we are takin' care of ya. We know what's best fer ya. Just relax, 'kay, kid?" The hands around them are familiar, the same ones that almost killed them, that then tried to nurse them...
Why did it have to be Victor who followed them?
Reader hears the song before they realize what's going on, and by then, they're too far under to fight it or even register that somethings wrong. They chirp, questioning their sharptoothed caretaker, who only brushes a clawed hand through their hair, purring love-calm-safe at them... And Reader can't resist sinking further into it... Their two older siblings are with longclawed caretaker, who they happily trill at, wanting to say hello. Other caretaker sighs, but pats them on the head, while their two older nestmates chuckle slightly. They aren't sure what's going on, but they can't help but relax further...
"Okay, back in tha water, kids," growls one of the caretakers, and then they're slipping under, bubbles rising around them as the salty depths swallow them up. It's gentle, soothing... And the deeper they go, the calmer Reader feels, until finally... They're deep asleep...
