Hawks is nothing more than a mentor to him… definitely not a playful familial figure who he had an unhealthy relationship with but is slowly developing into one of shared trust and mentorship similar to an older sibling.

I actually love that you asked about this one because it's the sequel to 'there's no good tricks but old ones' and I love the title. SO much. I'm going to add both fics to a series and call it 'the magician,' in part because of the song I'm pulling the titles from, and in part because I Have Feelings about Hawks + the magician tarot card. as always I am pulling out the board with the red strings when it comes to him, but if you take a step back the red strings are actually forming giant question marks and this emoji: 😭

even though he isn't in this snippet, Tokoyami actually does show up in this fic!! which is. really fun after Hawks' meditations on how bad of a teacher he was in 'there's no good tricks but old ones' 😬

Once again thinking about the similarities between Rook and Hawke and how guilty Varric must feel about pulling some poor kid probably around the same age Hawke was when they first met into this world ending mess like he carries the guilt for dragging Hawke into the deep roads expedition where they lose their sibling one way or another or when Varric called them to help the Inquisition and we all know how that can turn out. Varric's an old man with the weight of the world on his shoulders and I just know he feels as guilty as he is relieved to be putting that weight on Rook's back and even more guilty for being glad he has an excuse to not have to be the guy making the tough calls anymore

What If? MHA idea/prompt

What if Midoriya didn't encounter All Might? What if he encountered Endeavor, a pro-hero known to be very aggressive to the public, and even more so towards villains.

What if Midoriya asked him if he could be a hero without a quirk?

What if despite how out of character it was for him to say, Endeavor answered that he could try, but he could never be in the top ranks. That, if he had enough talent and intelligence, he could at least make it into Support or Underground.

What if Endeavor scanned over Midoriya's body, scoffing and saying that if he goes in just like that, he might as well give up now?

What if Endeavor, in his weird way of being superior, encouraged Midoriya because he's a believer in being able to do the impossible as long as you put in the effort?

What if he still inspires people to follow what his hero name symbolized? To attempt something with the highest effort. To give themselves the potential to succeed.

Maybe he was just being honest and really didn't care, maybe he needed good PR at the time, maybe he truly thought about what the boy's experience as being a quirkless child was like and (even more ooc) took pity on him.

Maybe Endeavor though that even cannon fodder was still useful.

Either way, it still meant everything to a boy who was just a few more steps away from taking that swan dive.

This was all a random thought, but I feel like Endeavor could manage to pull this off. It would be more like "You can try, but you won't make it anywhere close to the big leagues" rather than overly assuring.

Unlike All Might, I could see Endeavor utilizing those with intelligence very often. All Might is honestly pretty immature and is more of a "Punch first, ask questions later" kind of guy while I see Endeavor as someone who can think things through a lot more. So I can see Endeavor putting more importance to those more backstage heroes, especially the support heroes. I bet he depends on them a lot because of his quirk drawbacks, but isn't the type to admit it.

So yes, while out there, there is some possibility of him directing Midoriya towards more intelligence-based areas of heroics, specifically the ones that don't necessarily need or depend on a quirk for him to succeed.

Endeavor is an asshole, but I can see him answering with objective points to this question to someone who would soon join his kind's place on the statistics. The least he can do is encourage him to make his last moments useful, right?

I haven't decided what faction I want my character to be from in veilguard yet, I Need More Information before I can definitively make a call. but I must admit the siren song of rocking fifth house style disturbingly no-nonsense chill in the face of horror swag with the mourn watch is very loud and potent. speakers to the dead (and the dead are savage) vibes are so strong and so tempting

i see so many breakdowns about the tragedy of the champion!hawke (you try to save everyone, you will not; you do everything for the people you love, you will lose them anyway; etc etc) but i've never seen a breakdown about the tragedy of bethany hawke. she has all the tragedy of the champion, all the trauma, on top of being a mage and losing all agency for the majority of the story.

i get that a mage!hawke's storyline is similar, but by nature it cannot be exactly bethany's; her tragedy is borne of being the main character's little sister.
