I Should be sleeping, but unfortunately I finished relistening to Moon Over Soho again earlier after I finished Amongst Our Weapons again the other day and decided to just loop back around, and I continue to be Deeply not normal about Thomas Nightingale.
2396 names of wizards who died in WWII and he personally carved every single one of them into the remembrance wall at Casterbrook. 3 out of 5 of every military aged wizard in Britain died and the rest of them gave up the craft due to injury and/or trauma, but he persisted, alone. He started aging backwards in his 70s but stopped at the approximate age he was during the war. He still remembers how and where all of his friends died. "Some days, it seems so long ago, and some days..."
I keep thinking of the DS9 pilot and the Prophets bringing Sisko back to his wife's death over and over again because "you exist here". Nightingale still exists in the war. And then Peter comes along and drags him into the 21st century and refuses to let him stay wallowing in his grief and spots Exactly all the ways in which he's broken and needs someone to keep the cracks from widening. Peter’s mum says what would one more killing be to a man with blood on his hands, and Peter thinks of the strain he's seen in Nightingale and decides no, no more, there's Always Another Way. For moral and ethical reasons, but also because Nightingale has been damaged enough. And it started when he put his foot down over the jazz vampires and threw 'what did all your friends die for?' in Nightingale's face.
I am. So very Not Normal about them in general and about that conversation in particular
#rivers of london#moon over soho#amongst our weapons#thomas nightingale#peter grant#personal stuff#me; a known sucker for mentor figures and mentor-pupil friendships: gets invested in these two#absolutely no one: is surprised

A very great thing in this game I really appreciate: the ability to not kiss Solas's ass at every other opportunity. Renzo just hates this guy, and thankfully it's possible to actually express.

The more I write on my good Morzan AU, the more I research. And the more I research, the more I realize, Oromis is kinda a jerk and shouldn’t have been teaching literal children.
#don’t get me wrong#I love Oromis#but DANG he should not have been teaching kids with mental issues#he’s so freaking mean and degrading#and that’s just in general#and according to him he had WAY less patience when mentoring Brom and Morzan#you want him to mentor the newest rider meant to save the world and his former pupils turned out like THAT?#christopher paolini#inheritance cycle#eragon shadeslayer#eragon bromsson#eragon#Morzan#Brom#oromis#and so many people wonder how Morzan turned out how he did

rotating something in my mind about shtola having matoya as a mentor and then growing to see her as a mother figure vs erenville and cahciua distancing themselves by referring to each other as mentor/pupil
#will anything come from this idk#but i had the realization yesterday and now im here#but it’s just interesting to me! i don’t think matoya was a perfect parent (who is) and you can see the ways#that her more negative traits have affected shtola but you can also see shtola had a pretty good childhood (just look in matoya’s relict)#and she values her to the point she takes her name in shb#vs cahciua who is so open and warm but when erenville is asked if he is ‘cahciua’s boy’#he answers that’s his mentor#and when he has a response she doesn’t like she immediately switches to ‘as my pupil’#something else to consider i think is how much of that is cahciua’s actual personality…like how truthful of a recreation of other people’s#memories of her can you getbut erenville doesn’t react like any of it is out of the ordinary behavior for her#he in fact reacts the opposite way at the end lol ‘you’re doing it again!’ or whatever it is he says#i need a text post tag#dawntrail spoilers#okay sorry something else i want to know about is shtola’s bio parents and how she feels about them and why they sent a 7 year old to live#in a cave. sometimes i want to give shtola emotions about that but i haven’t quite settled on what i think

I don't understand ship wars. Like, I get why people have these disagreements, everyone has different tastes and preferences, but I just saw a post where someone was talking about how they hope everyone who ships [insert ship here] has a shit day, and it's like... Girl. Why do we STILL care about this stuff so much?
I know this is minuscule and silly for me to post about, but the ship in question has garnered so much negative attention that I, someone who doesn't like it and only wants to engage with the general fandom, can't go one minute in the fandom's tag without being hit with a barrage of angry posts condemning it like it's some moral atrocity.
Some of these people are acting like the Steven Universe fandom circa 2016 and it's just like... Girl. Respect other people's interests and move on, it shouldn't be this hard. If you start shit with people because of something as insignificant as a ship, that's embarrassing for YOU.
#this was gonna be a vague post but screw it#if you couldn't tell#this post is about the ghoulcy hate mob#i understand why a lot of people don't like it#because i also don't like it#it just doesn't make sense for their characters imo and I see them more as reluctant companions turned mentor and pupil#but jesus christ gamers#its not that deep#maybe I'll talk about sanitizing toxic ships in another post because that's the justification I see floating around regarding this behavior#but anyway#sheesh#fallout tv series#ghoulcy#hopefully i don't get jumped for this one

I already sent you something and I hope that Im not spamming your ask box I just like your way of thinking and I’m too new to know other meta people. What do you think about the familial relationship in one piece? I mean I noticed some new discussion about whatever shanks is luffy father figure or not and it’s not the first time I see this type of discussion here. There’s a lot of those figures in one piece talk and I get headcanons but many consider it canon? And for example call ships weird. I’m not even gonna mention shuggy, I think you saw it and obviously don’t see it this way(I’m here so I agree). But I noticed Uta and Luffy being siblings. Mihawk being father to perona and zoro. Crocodile being father to robin. Makino being mother to ASL (I only counted dadan as their mother). Zoro dad to chopper also counts but it’s less serious. I also saw some all straw hats are family. How do you see them? More headcanon or is it oda intention to see those as family type? I think it’s interesting since non blood related families are big theme in one piece. Thank you and sorry for coming to your ask box again
honestly i think popular headcanons often get misconstrued for authorial intention, which causes friction in the fandom over what really just amounts to interpretation. and i think one piece's emphasis on found family has actually had the opposite effect in that many feel the need to link certain in-universe relationships back to found family somehow. there's nothing wrong with headcanons, but sometimes it irks me, especially when people declare their own interpretation as canon.
#i think it's important to remember that our own chosen interpretations do not necessarily align with the author's intent#and therefore other people are fully entitled to have interpretations which contradict yours#for example garp and koby have a mentor and pupil dynamic which someone might interpret as familial if they so choose#but oda hasn't explicitly stated or implicitly suggested this#you know ?#ask

One thing I’ve wondered about within the ‘Thomas universe’ is wether or not people would be more inclined to keep around older generations of machine a bit longer so they could effectively teach the newer models how to go about things…
I feel like new machines would probably have a general sense of how to carry out their purpose already, but they don’t have any experience or knowledge to fall back on yet. So there’d be still be some use in keeping around one that’s more experienced to try guide them a bit.
I do imagine that would feel rather morose for the soon to be replaced machine, to see themselves be directly phased out of use… but it could be an interesting way of having them complete their purpose. One last way to be useful in a sense.
Though I think the fun part comes in how this dynamic could go any number of ways for both parties. ‘Sagely teacher who mostly accepts their fate and tries their best to impart knowledge onto the next generation’ vs ‘teacher who grits their teeth towards the newcomer stealing their job but cannot really do much about it,’ etc.
I feel like this would end up happening organically in places anyway, but I think having it be a concept or practice that the machines are at least aware of would make for something interesting character dynamic wise. Not everyone would end up getting the best advice or guidance to help them, from either human or machine.
‘People aren’t born with certain ideas in their head; they have to come from somewhere,’ type of thing.
#ttte headcanon#my thoughts#somewhat vague ideas here#but I find the mentor and pupil dynamic interesting and full of a lot of opportunities if done right#as in this case it gives more of pinpointable reason as to why an engine might gain certain ideas and morals (outside of human influence)#that end up impacting how they interact with the world#this already happens in canon - but I think having it be a sort’ve… more concrete cultural thing that happens could be interesting#(edward duke skarloey and rheneas are the ones that come to the top of my head that sorta fall into this role)#(though they are of course not really at much threat of being retired so that’s a bit different of a scenario#than what I’ve mentioned here)

This got me thinking, I watched all the Bayverse movies as a kid and throughout my childhood I found out about information about Age of Extinction, on how the Autobots were hunted down one by one. One interesting and depressing detail I found out from an old post way back was that Sideswipe was hunted down and killed by Cemetery Wind. Then the surviving Autobots found him, buried him and mourned his death. What hurts me the most is like what was he thinking during all that? He and the other Autobots were just trying to survive, he not only witnessed one of his old leaders kill his mentor in front of him, couldn’t do anything about it. But now he had to be separated from his fellow comrades to protect each other. Which didn’t work and the fact he was the only Autobot to be buried and mourned over really hurts.
I have many favorite Autobots and Sideswipe happens to be one of them. I wish we knew more about him in the Bayverse and got to see more of him and Ironhide. I like to think they had a father and son relationship or a mentor and student platonic relationship, I just see them as a cool duo. Just as much as Sideswipe and Sunstreaker. But what also gets me is that during all this Sunstreaker in that universe could also be dead and not only him but Ironhide could be waiting for Sideswipe in the Allspark. Probably a bittersweet feeling, on one hand they get to see him again on the other he dies at the hands of those who he protected and lost his mentor and his friends over. Also another thought I wonder if the other Autobots would regret their decisions on protecting the Earth or feel honored that they followed their beloved leader to the end.
I just wanted to share my thoughts about this, sorry that this post was long XD
Me reaction to finding out about that detail on Sidesipe:
