Bad headspace hcs
Hi. Welcome back to me ignoring my finals.
Warnings: Mentions of grave robbing, mentions of corpses, mentions of schizophrenia, depression, and eating disorder, violence
Mary Goore:
This is where the weird and sick fantasies happen
They'll visit the cemetery more and dig up some graves
Mainly they'll rob and/or sketch the skeleton or even decayed body that's inside the casket
Sometimes they'll go further, but that's depending on if the voices are acting up again
Mary deals with residual schizophrenia and sometimes forgets to take his medication please get them a fucking daily pill counter jfc he needs help
When they're in this headspace, you're best off to just leave him alone. Mary becomes more unpredictable and even violent due to the intrusive thoughts that won't shut up and heightened paranoia
This episode typically lasts a few days, but on the off chance it's particularly bad, it could be up to a month
Just let them reach out to you whenever they're ready
"Sorry I've been MIA for a while. The voices wouldn't stfu. Wanna hang out later?"
DD Sars
Swings between manic episodes to becoming a hermit for a while
Probably needs antidepressants but doesn't have any
He couldn't stand the side effects from his old prescription but ended up changing insurance before he could ask for a new prescription
Was told he was fine and didn't need any medication from a nurse, then told to come back to the hospital if he felt bad again
Absolutely doesn't trust doctors now and refuses to ask them for help with both his depression and eating disorder
"I'm fine." said with a forced and angry smile
You can interact with DD and he'll genuinely tell you what's wrong. He worries a lot so he's grateful if you let him vent for a bit
Promises to try and eat more and take care of himself but will 100% admit when he's too tired to even get out of bed
Doesn't want you to worry about him but he appreciates the concern
G. Grotesque
He'll start digging up graves but not for the same reason as Mary
Normally, G. suffers alone and silently, but sometimes he bottles up his emotions too much and suddenly everything bursts out at once
Refuses to admit anything is wrong to anyone (DD's the only one that can trick him into talking)
But when it gets too bad, G. will dig up a grave just so he can stab a body repeatedly
Doesn't stop until he physically cannot keep going
If you catch him doing this, he absolutely breaks down sobbing in your arms
"I can't take it anymore! It hurts!"
He'll let you take him home and coddle him because he's too drained to do anything else
He'll feel better in a couple days after entirely breaking down. He just has to calm down for a bit
E. Forcas
Stays home and actually stops speaking
Everything takes too much energy and he's too busy fighting for his fucking life to verbally talk
Please only ask him yes or no questions. It's easier for him to nod or shake his head
Doesn't act out at all like the others but there's a distinct look in his eyes
Thousand yard stare all the way. If you come over, he'll just look in your direction but not at you
Doesn't mind if you watch movies with him or even cuddle, but he's just going to be silent for the entire stay
When he does get enough energy, he'll finally look you in the eye. Still doesn't entirely focus on you, but it's a step in the right direction
"Could you spend the night with me? I don't wanna be alone anymore."
Please stay with him for a while. The company helps more than he'll ever let on

Am I the only one who thinks it's fucked up that the Mortalitasi are parading about King Markus's corpse...as opposed to letting the next in line rule??
He's alive in DAI - old, but very much flesh and blood - and we know this because the venatori use blood magic on him to get him under their control. So, what is he in DATV then? Are they implying that he's a lich? That he still has his mind? That they've got a spirit in there?
What do they gain from this? Cassandra's, what, 64th in line for the throne? So there's a bunch of potential heirs just hanging about -> potential heirs who want the crown because we know that Cassandra's parents were executed for trying to overthrow him.
Cassandra may not be fond of her family, but I can't imagine her letting this slide. This is the type of shit that gets an Exalted March called down on you! Especially if she's divine?! Nevarran's can be 'death-focused'* yes, but they let the living rule and not the dead.
It's their belief that when their soul passes through the Fade it results in a spirit being displaced - so they have the Mortalitasi find the spirit a new home in the Necropolis. That is their job - they maintain the Necropolis and, according to DATV, sometimes deal with awry magic.
The potential relation to a Divine or the Head of the Seekers, the King of Nevarra, is having his corpse puppeted about by a mage...and no one seems to care?!
Is this not super fucked up to anyone else?!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit - I put this down in the tags but I think it's important to point out: In all the previous games up to this point not once has a mage, manipulating a corpse like this, ever been portrayed as quirky or funny. This is not the norm of what the Mortalitasi are supposed to do - they honour the dead they do not puppet them.
Thedas is a world very strongly intertwined with faith, especially the Chantry. It is Nevarra's attitudes towards death and their burial practices that distinguishes it from other Andrastian nations - they still have the Chantry, the Templars, and the Circle of Magi just as the rest of Southern Thedas has.
It's impossible to imagine any Divine (Leliana, Cassandra, or Vivienne) hearing of this occurring and not taking action against this. It's extremely strange that Emmrich bemoans that half the nobility know this has occurred when this action should be seen as nothing short of an abomination to the faithful - including Emmrich.
#*death-focused in that some nobles spend most of their worldly fortunes on tombs for their corpses after death.#is it supposed to be: 'quirky Nevarra with their undead - even their King is undead'?#yeah it could be a 'throwaway line' for a gag from Emmrich#âoh poor Markus is falling apart we need to give him a kick to restartâ#i dunno Emmrich - it's giving me Leandra vibes and i don't like it!#in every single other game in the series when a mage uses a corpse for their own gain like this its never been portrayed as quirky or funny#they're puppeting his corpse about? the king of a country?!#is he in there still?!!#Cassandra wouldn't allow this!#the game has no politics in it but when it does its pfft gone in the wind with no explanation#and its completely nonsensical#if there's a reason for this in-game then its just not explained at all - i shouldn't have to read supplemental material#in order to understand what happening in game#or maybe let me ask questions??#Cassandra / Leliana / or Vivienne would not let this slide at all for however long its been going on#btw i'm mentioning them taking action because it's implied that this has been going on for a while now#this could have been a cool plot point? uncovering the truth for the divine and finding someone behind the throne?#instead we get - 'big skeleton goes brrrr'#datv spoilers#datv critical#dragon age the veilguard#emmrich volkarin#cassandra pentaghast#veilguard critical

tbh i do get a little bothered by the notion that tim took the first shot he had to drop out of school because he hated school and didnt wanna do it and all of that bc i feel like it ignores the probably very important context that he dropped out after his dad (as well as steph-or at least, he was led to believe, in the same week) died, also he was in a school shooting. He did attempt to go to a school in bludhaven but the kids there were so wildly insensitive about the shooting that tim dropped out under the pretense of his "uncle" homeschooling him. In his oyl era, he /did/ go back to school, and it provided him some form of normalcy. Tim was a normal kid, he wasnt crazy about school but he still went to school and it helped him feel like a normal kid, something he desperately clung to. He only dropped out again to do his Brucequest, in an era where he was notably Not Doing Well (which. Yeah. he wasnt doing well bc he was like 17 and almost everyone in his support system was dead, he recently had hits put out on him, got blown up, and backstabbed by his not-dead-ex, he couldnt support his theory that bruce was alive and was extremely stressed about that, and he didnt know wtf he was doing. I love him btw.) Basically tim dropping out of school was a signifier that he wasnt doing well and he was giving up on the normality that he tried to cling to and im a bit of a nitpicky person who gets irked by minor things
#robin 1993#tim drake#red robin 2009#rambles#Tim Drake wanted to cling to the idea of normal#Including going to school#School shooting mention#Tbh if all the shit that happened to tim happened to me id probably also drop out???#Like his sorta friend philmont got murdered at school#His friend darla got shot and he gave her corpse cpr (dw she came back as laura fell)#There was that one kid at brentwood who overdosed in meth i think that tim tried to save and couldnt#dc#Just things that i get bothered by a little bit????#This isnt crit aimed at anyone i literally just had too many thoughts and they had to escape#Tim Drake my beloved

I just realized that Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Yanliâs last words (that we hear in the story in his case) were directed at Wei Wuxian and not Jiang Cheng
Tbh Iâd never get over that if I were Jiang Cheng lol at least he has Madam Yu
#jiang cheng#mo dao zu shi#mdzs#and I know itâs because wwx is the main character but itâs just so funny#all of jcâs immediate family is dead and the last words he heard two of them say werenât to him#granted jfm mentioned jc by telling wwx to protect him and jyl was telling wwx to chill with the corpses but#still.#my point still stands#tbh I think jc centers wwx in his grief and anger because wwx was the center of his turmoil growing up and cannot stop being the focus poin#throughout his life. no fucking wonder he never gets over wwx#none of his family gave him a chance to be anything separate from him

DP x DC, revenant!Jason Todd
Shortly after meeting, Danny and Jason have a late night conversation about what it means to come back. 1281 words
On AO3
-
Danny woke groggily, in a dark place that he didn't recognize, and took a moment to get his bearings.
He felt the warning ache in his neck that came from being propped up against an arm rest. There were two sources of dim light in the roomâthe glow of city street lights, muffled behind a curtain, and the green eyes of the man whose lap Danny's feet were propped on.
Right. Danny hadnât meant to fall asleep on the revenantâsâon Jasonâsâcouch, but theyâd been talking for so long, he mustâve dozed off.
Jason had had so many questions, about ectoplasm, about the zone, about Dannyâs own experiences. Danny had done his best to clear up everything he could. A revenant may not be quite the same as he was, but still, it made Danny happy to be able to pass on his hard won knowledge and maybe save someone else a bit of the hurt and confusion that heâd gone through. It was what heâd always wished someone would do for him.
Jason was slumped into the couch, but he didnât look relaxed. Danny examined his still profile, cast in strange shadows by its own green glow, and wondered how long it had been since heâd moved.
Danny shifted slightly, purposefully producing the fabric sounds of a body against upholstery, to make sure Jason knew he was awake. No reaction. Danny gave him one more moment, then asked, âYou okay?â
Jason didnât look at him when he answered, âYou told me Iâm basically possessing my own corpse, and Iâm supposed to not be upset about that?â
Really, Danny shouldâve predicted something like that. How long had he spent, trying to pretend that death hadnât really touched him? It wasnât an easy thing to accept.
âWhatâs the difference between a body and a corpse?â Danny asked.
Jasonâs eyes snapped to Danny, their glow intensifying. âI am not dealing with riddle bullshit right now, I swear to-â
âNo, Iâm being serious,â Danny interrupted, pulling his feet from Jasonâs lap and sitting himself up. âThereâs one difference between a corpse and a living body, and thatâs that someone is living in it. Jasonââ he reached out, gripping one of Jasonâs hands in his ââyouâre alive. Thatâs what matters. The rest is details.â
Jasonâs shoulders bent inwards, his other hand raising to rub at his chest. âYou donât get it,â he said, quiet. âPeople donât just come back from what they did to me. It doesnât make any sense.â
âHowever you died, itâs not-â
Jason huffed an ugly sound, a short and bitter laugh that Danny hurt to hear. âIs it crazy that that isnât even what I was talking about? I meant after.â The motion on his chest was repetitive, like he was tracing something underneath his shirt, and Danny got the sinking feeling that he knew just what sort of scar it might be. âI was gone, okay? I was gone, and this body was still here. And they took it, and they cut it open and rummaged around inside to figure out what happened. Which isââ he cut off, sniffed, and Danny gripped his hand tighter ââwhich is stupid, right? Itâs not like it wasnât obvious.â His fingers twitched, and he continued, haltingly, âI mean, Iâve read the report. Pulled it off his stupid files. The smoke inhalation did me in. After everything that happened, it was the smoke.â
Jasonsâ hand pulled out of Dannyâs, and they both rose to cover his face, cutting off the glow while he curled in on himself even tighter. His voice was slightly muffled when he said, âAnd then they had to ship me home, right? So they bled me dry and pumped me full of formaldehyde, and they prettied me up so they could pretend I wasnât just some empty thing, and Bruce held the tiniest most depressing little funeral known to man and put my ass in the ground, and I had to wake up down there.â His words and his breaths were coming too quick, and Danny didnât know how to help. He didnât want Jason to stop, not when it seemed like he needed to say all of this, but he could see just how badly the revenant was hurting.
âBut you did wake up,â he whispered.
âWoke up in my own mutilated corpse!â Jason snarled. âEverything Iâve forgotten, and that memory is still crystal fucking clear! It stank in there, like death and vinegar and mud, and it was so small, and I couldnât even try to scream for help because they sewed my fucking mouth shutâ!â He broke off into a sob, and Danny couldnât stand it anymore, had to lean into Jasonâs side and wrap an arm around him as he shook with all the emotion he couldnât reign in.
âOkay,â Danny said. Not youâre okay, just okay. âOkay, so thatâs the most horrible thing Iâve ever heard, and I regularly hang out with a guy who wants to skin me.â
Jason sniffed. âWhat?â
âNevermind. Itâs just-â
âNo, I think we should go back to the skinning thing-â
âI just donât want you to let it define you,â Danny interrupted. âI did that. I got into my head about it, the whole âbeing deadâ thing, feeling like I wasâŠâ Danny gave himself a second, swallowed, âlike some sort of freak. A thing that didnât belong anywhere. But Iâm still alive, and youâre alive, and even if we werenât, it wouldnât matter, because weâre still here, and as long as youâre here you can find something thatâs worth staying for.â Danny rubbed what he hoped was a soothing pattern into Jasonâs admittedly impressive bicep.
Jason let out a sigh. âI must really be pathetic if youâve gotta pep talk me like that, huh?â he said, and Danny pretended not to see him wiping at his eyes. âSorry,â he added, âabout all this. Iâve got some shit I havenât dealt with, and this ârevenantâ stuff brought it up pretty bad.â
âI get it,â Danny said, and hoped Jason could tell how much he meant it.
Jason sighed again, heavy, like he was trying to release something else with his breath, and said, âIt still doesnât make any sense. Logically, I canât be alive. Where did my blood come from?â
Danny shrugged. âDo you have blood?â
âI definitely have blood. Iâve seen a lot of it.â
That gave Danny pause. âJust like, around?â he asked.
âYeah,â Jason said, deadpan. âIâve got a surplus, so I like to leave some here and there, make sure everyone gets a chance to appreciate it.â
âI have no idea how much youâre joking and it frightens me,â Danny told him.
âWeak,â Jason replied.
âAnyways, you gotta not think about it too much. The interdimensional goop is already logic-defying, and youâre mixing magic with it with your special soul willpower or something. Your brain will explode if you try to make it make sense.â
Jason huffed a little laugh, bouncing Danny on his shoulder, and this time it made him feel lighter. âCan I just say that I hate that Iâm full of interdimensional goop?â
âValid,â Danny said.
Even without looking at Jason, Danny could tell that he just rolled his eyes by the way the soft green light moved.
Danny had his ear pressed to Jasonâs shoulder, feeling his warmth, and if he focused, he could just make out the revenantâs pulse. Personally, Danny thought it was pretty cool to be full of magic and goop and blood. Much cooler than Danny, who was way more science goop than magic goop. Theyâd have to compare notes on that sometime.
Maybe Jason would come around to it.
#not me writing a short piece that heavily relies on my own headcanons and never explaining them#it wasn't supposed to be like this guys it was gonna be a little easily digestible text post but they just kept talking#i just wanted the 'what's the difference between a body and a corpse' bit and then next thing you know i'm googling embalming practices#bit that I didn't manage to fit in: 'Jason you're allowed to be mad that somebody stole your blood.'#'Like. dp x dc prompt: dead on main au where danny leaves the joker's body on jason's doorstep as a courting gift
in this au, danny lives in the ghost zone full time. (he's also a little unhinged.)
along with the power boost he gained as the king of the infinite realms, danny's status as a half-dead half-alive being makes him develop the peculiar ability of knowing the cause of death of all ghosts and undead he encounters.
he meets jason on a visit to the living realm and falls in love with the revenant at first sight. since his ability lets him catch a glimpse of his crush's death, he decides killing the joker would be the best way to win him over, so he hunts down the clown, unalives him and wraps his dead body with a nice green bow and sends it to jason via portal along with a bouquet of asphodels.
cue the bat clan freaking out over the unknown entity who just gifted a corpse to their undead family member with no explanation whatsover.
(danny probably should have remembered to leave a note.)
jason is both creeped out and charmed.

Theory: some High-Ends use the corpses of past OFA users
There aren't tons of High-Ends. They can't be mass-produced so easily, and there's only one that's blatantly female, literally named Woman and with a tall, defined figure
Maybe Woman's original identity is already confirmed, but... she's similar to Nana in build, isn't she?
It's hinted that All For One actually kept Nana's corpse. How, 20+ years later, could he give Tenko his grandmother's pristine hand? Is he just keeping their hands? Or their actual corpses?
Also, when looking at corpses to give multiple Quirks to, One For All users are the best for this. Having inherited One For All, their bodies had maintained multiple Quirks when they were alive, even if they couldn't use more than their natural Quirk and One For All's physical ability. And to their bodies, One For All doesn't count as just one Quirk; the natural one, and Yoichi, are already too much for a human. But Shinomori shows that it counts each previous user's Quirk, on top of Yoichi's and one's own natural one.
Their bodies adjusted to holding multiple Quirks, and when they were alive, they didn't become deformed or lose brain function. They were perfectly fine, and only had shortened livesâbut that doesn't matter as corpses.
Nomus go brain dead when they have multiple Quirks. But the past users didn't, being completely fine, making them perfect for Nomu development.
High-Ends can think. They're all physically powerful, and One For All users make the best basis, even from leftover embers and physique. So why not use that great base to make the best outcome Nomus (High-Ends)?
#originally this was going to focus on how hood could be shinomori cuz a lot of things line up#like pants; avoiding the strongest couldve been tweaked to looking for the strongest; that afo didnt know his face so named âHoodâ#for theming; Endeavor burning him and saying to rest (shinomori gets a cremation and can relax [OFA]; and so on#but nope Hood is confirmed to be a boxer from some ring#(and the fact endeavor says Hood is like him from the past or future.. and that shinomori wanted to grow his strength as much as possible)#(for the factor.. so technically he wanted to be the strongest......)#BUT NOPE HOOD IS NOT SHINOMORI#it would really make sense if he were though#man#mha#bnha#my hero academia#boku no hero academia#nana shimura#woman#nomu#ofa#one for all#spoilers#hikage shinomori#yoichi shigaraki#afo#all for one#imagine afo is keeping their corpses and sets them loose on midoriya who just destroyed the last of the consciousnesses#darkkk#edit: its mentioned shinomori had an autopsy so we know his cause of death AND GARAKI WORKS IN THE MORGUE.#GARAKI WAS ALIVE BACK THEN YKNOW#GARAKI WAS ALIVE FOR ALL THE USERS. HE COULD HAVE PRESERVED THEIR CORPSES AND TURNED THEM TO NOMUS

Coming to the conclusion that Phantom is the reason for Dannyâs withdrawn behaviour, Maddie is forced to face the truth. Her son is deadâand itâs all their fault.
Something is very wrong with her son.
Maddie has observed it for months now, the way that something is not quite right. The frigid air that seems to be radiating from him, the pallid skin, his unblinking blue eyes. At first she thought he mightâve been overshadowed, but that ended up being dismissed as his eyes were still blue.
So, she doesnât know what it could be. And she supposed the only way to find out is to confront him. She and Jack have given him plenty of months to say something, but to no avail.
âDanny?â Maddieâs breath hitches as she stands outside his bedroom door, her hand resting on the wood. Thereâs a faint rustling noise and the sound of something slamming.
âYeah, mom?â Dannyâs strained voice.
âCan I come in?â She asks, worried that sheâs woken him up. He never seems to get much sleep these days, perpetual layers under his eyes.
âUhâŠsure.â Dannyâs voice trails off, developing into a hoarse cough. Not just tiredness, but heâs always fatigued and ill.
Maddie yanks the door open, preventing herself from the doubt beginning to form in her mind. She will confront him and she will do it now. Jazzâs voice of âgiving Danny spaceâ rings in her head as she shuts the door, facing her son.
Danny is splayed out on his bed, his skin so pale she can even feel the cold radiating from him. A fever, but the opposite?
No.
âGood grief, Danny. Youâre hypothermic!â Maddie reaches to press her hand to his forehead. The sudden icy contact makes a chill prickle down her spine.
âMom! I-â He flinches back, holding his hands up defensively and blinking owlishly. This is the closest sheâs gotten to him in months. Have his eyes always had the subtle greeness to them?
âWhatâs happened to you?â her voice trails off. None of this makes sense. Signs of ghostliness, the cold, the pale skinâŠyet he is still Danny. He consumes food, grows, goes to school. Doesnât haunt Amity, or fly, or glow or show any signs of an obsession.
âIââ Danny grimaces, his hand resting on his neck, âI canât tell you. Not now.â
âWhat do you mean you canât tell me?! You wonât? Or is someone forcing you to stay silent?â
âA bit of both, I suppose.â He shrugs haplessly, and Maddie swears she sees a flicker of neon green. âI want to tell you. So bad. I donât want to be likâ living like this anymore. Itâs not fair. But I donât know what else to do. Until yoâ they see past their beliefs and realise the truth, then Iâm stuck.â
âDanny, you need to tell me. Now.â her eyes narrow and Maddie nearly reaches out to shake him by the shoulders. What sort of trouble is he in? Someoneâs threatening him to stay silent. She can see the desperation in his eyes. Heâs trapped. Her baby boy desperately wants to say something, but is scared to silence.
âWho is it? Whoâs threatening you like this? Did you see something?â Maybe he was witness to a crime. Murder? Drugs?
âNo, Mom, itâs not like that.â Danny shakes his head, hopping off his bed and trawling across the room. The teen seems almostâŠdejected? Disappointed?
âThen what is it?â Itâs like talking to a wall.
âUntil they realise the truth and see how blind theyâve been, I wonât budge.â
âRealise the truthâwhat do you mean? Who needs to realise theyâve done wrong?â Maddie pleads, the confusion rattling even her scientific brain. The more he talks, the more questions arise and become more enigmatic.
âYou, Mom. You and Dad are the ones who are blind.â Danny stares at her with a harshness she didnât think he was capable of. âAnd until you see past your beliefs, I wonât tell you anything.â
He turns and walks out the door.
Maddieâs heart shatters.
What have we done?
â
âGet down and face us ghost!â Jackâs shout echoes through the streets of Amity Park, a shot of the bazooka following.
Phantom easily dances away from the shot, which lands and destroys a nearby building. The ghost twists to look at them, green eyes glaring with such ferocity that makes Maddie grip her gun tighter.
âWell Iâm sorry that Iâd rather not be shot at!â The ghost retorts, slugging a stolen thermos onto its belt. Her and Jack had been patrolling the streets, when in a rare chance, Phantom had been finishing up after another fight. Probably for territory.
âYouâve no other choice!â Maddie shouts back, strengthening her resolve as she surges forward. A green dot reflects on him as she takes perfect aim.
This is it, Maddie. This is all sheâs ever wanted. To capture Phantom and stop the ghosts from terrorising Amity Park. At least by doing this, it might offer Danny some respite. Heâs terrified of ghosts.
Danny⊠her prior helplessness returns in waves, making Maddieâs aim on the ghost falter. He stares at her with glowing green eyes, and she stares right back.
Just like Danny, even with a mischievous glower, deep down she can see the tiredness in Phantomâs eyes. That heâs sick of this too.
All the more reason to be rid of him. Her eyes narrow.
âMads, whatâs up?â Jack shouts, distracted from his shot as he turns to look at her and simultaneously fires. The shot veers off into a building, far off kilter from the intended target.
âIâm fine.â Maddie inhales, eyes narrowed. Since when did the air smell so strongly of decay? The stench is sweet and stings the back of her throat.
Holding her breath, Maddie points her ectogun at Phantom again. Heâs not done anything, not tried to escape or make stupid remarks. He just remains there.
Floating. Staring.
Staring with those tired eyes.
Phantom floats down a little closer, maybe a foot or so infront of her. The aim on his chest is bright and burning, but Phantom doesnât seem to care. Bile roses up Maddieâs throat as the smell becomes stronger.
The street is eerily silent, so much so that even Jack has put his gun down, letting it remain useless by his side.
Phantom stares.
âYou need to see the truth.â
Just like Danny had said. Rage consumes her. How has heâhow does he know what Danny said? She doesnât know, she doesnât care.
But now it makes sense. Why has Danny been like this.
Phantomâs been controlling him. Of course Danny wouldnât say anything when Amity Parkâs strongest ghost was threatening him to silence.
She looks at those eyes again. The tired green eyes. Almost pleading.
Itâs just a ploy, and you know it.
Without hesitating, she points.
And shoots blankly in the chest.
Green and red everywhere.
â
She goes out at night, the full intention of finding Phantom. Heâs downed and weak, lurking somewhere in Amity. Itâs unlikely he has any sort of teleportation powers that can send him back to the ghost zone.
Her shot had surely been in close proximity.
In the dark, Maddie stalks the streets, trying best to blend in with the surroundings. She notes the scene of earlier that day, with the ectoplasm dully shining in the night. And then some darker patches, which make her stomach turn.
Ectoplasm and red. Ectoplasm and blood.
It shouldnât be possible. Is it a trait carried over? If Phantom overshadows Danny for so long does Phantom get Dannyâs traits too?
Dannyâs got the cold, the tiredness, the green sheen to his eyes.
So Phantom would get blue eyes, warmth, perhaps a heartbeat and red ectoplasm?
Yes. Thatâs what it is. Phantomâs simply got red ectoplasm. Itâs not blood, and the citrusy smell indicates so.
She recalls dinner time, what Danny had said. Heâd been strangely reserved this time, much more than usual. Heâd clenched a hand to his chest, and eaten very little.
âYou deny and deny. It wonât help you. All the signs are laid out for you.â
Heâd put his hand on his chest, and itâd been then that Maddie had noticed the branching scar on his left palm, disappearing down his long sleeved shirt.
A lichtenberg figure.
Howâd he even get that? She thinks again, wracking her mind. Thereâs nothing jumping out at her, no accident or event where Danny got injured.
No. Maybe itâs not.
Rethink. Recoup.
Danny isnât overshadowed. Why would Phantom tell you the exact same thing Danny said if he was overshadowing Danny? That would and did expose his whole schemeâand even for a ghost heâs smarter than that.
Moving away from the scene, she brings out the ghost tracker to try and find where Phantom is. Thereâs a trace of a powerful ectosignature up in the park.
Bingo. She thinks.
When she arrives at the park, itâs a haunting sight. The skeletons of trees are barely visible by the outline of the moon, and birds and critters chirrup in the distance. And there, on the top of the hill in the midst of the park, is a beacon of a figure.
Phantom. Careful not to bring attention to herself, Maddie puts the ectotracker into a compartment in her jumpsuit, watching the ghostâs every move.
Phantomâs hunched over, his knees tucked up to his chest. His green eyes are the brightest sheâs ever seen, gazing up to the stars above. No fighting. No other ghosts.
Just Phantom, the silence and the stars.
âHave you ever thought about what's up there?â Phantomâs voice is just a whisper, yet it fractures the silence of the night.
Maddie freezes, instinctively reaching for an ectogun on her hip. She canât do that though, not when sheâs in the midst of research. What good would it be destroying the ghost that might have a connection her her son?
âYou saw me?â The woman instead inquires.
âOf course I did.â Phantom narrows his green eyes before turning to look back at the sky. âNow if youâre gonna shoot me, can you at least get it out of the way or leave? Iâm trying to stargaze here.â
âYou enjoy stargazing?â She blurts without thinking. A ghost having hobbies? It should be impossible. All ghosts are driven by their obsessions.
Yet, here Phantom is. No other ghosts to fight and now crowds of people to cheer his heroics on.
âOf course I do.â The ghost hmphs , shooting her another fleeting look. Maddie guesses heâs getting testy about her being out of his line of vision.
Fine. Sheâll bite just this once.
Sheâs about to talk when Phantom interrupts.
âYou still havenât realised, have you?â The ghost tilts his head in such a passive way it makes Maddie instinctively go for the ectogun. His smarmy, know-it-all attitude.
âWhat donât I know?â She grits, playing along. Itâs about Danny, it has to be. How theyâre connected.
âYou need to figure that one out yourself.â Phantom says dully, expression almost disappointed. âI canât tell you.â
Clenching her fists, Maddie holds back the instinct to fire her ectogun again. She canât go destroying Phantom a second time.
Is it just like Danny? That he wants to tell her, but canât?
âI know my son is too terrified to even speak to me anymore! He was too scared because youâre threatening him.â Maddie narrows her eyes.
Phantom has the audacity to scoff, âYou keep telling yourself that, then. Youâll not get anywhere if you think Iâm to blame for the reason Danny doesnât talk.â
Danny said that, too. That her and Jack were to blame for his withdrawal, that they needed to see the truth.
Maddie lets herself slump to the grass, grip on ectogun loosening. For the first time in years, she feels completely stumped.
Phantom hasnât controlled Danny. Heâs not threatened him. So what is Dannyâs secret? Why the injuries, the constant absences?
âI justââ she takes an intake of breath, trying to hold back the tears stinging the corners of her eyes, âI want to know what happened to him. Itâs been so long. Dannyâs so distant now, and I feel like I can never reach him.â
Out of the corner of her bleary vision, she notices Phantom watching. His posture stiffens, as if in shock.
She supposes such talk of Danny may come as a surprise to his system. After all, Phantom had to have parents once. Perhaps they were the reason for hisâŠearly demise.
Thereâs no doubt Phantom is a similar age to Danny. Perhaps recently dead, even.
âWhat about your parents?â She finds herself asking.
âMine?â Phantom blinks, then considers. âWasnât one of your main theories that ghosts canât remember their past lives?â
âWell..â Maddie feels her cheeks flush, before steeling herself, âThis is your time to prove me wrong, isnât it? Do you remember them?â
âTouchĂ©. I do.â The ghost pulls his knees up to his chest. âThey were kind for the most part. Very aloof, though. Got so carried away with work that sometimes I slipped as their priority.â
And thatâs just what she and Jack have done, isnât it?
âThatâs what me and Jack have done to Danny, I think.â The moment the words are out in the night, Maddie feels a sense of relief. Sheâs admitted it.
Never putting him first, and when she did finally notice it was too far gone. Of course Danny wonât open up to her now, given ghosts have prioritised over the past months.
âYeah. I think so too.â
âIâm sorry Phantom. That you had to go through that, I mean. And your parents shouldâve cared for you. Just like me and Jack shouldâve for Danny.â She replies. âIâll apologise to him tonight.â
The ghost gives her a crooked smile, strangely familiar. âI think heâll know already that you mean well.â
And with that, Phantom looks back up at the stars, green eyes glimmering with reflections of galaxies. Maddie, feeling intrusive, stands up.
Hesitantly, she backs away, trying not to disturb the ghost.
But then Phantom looks at her over his shoulder. The expression is so strikingly familiar but she doesnât know why, and stifles it down.
The starry glimmer in his eyes, the freckles sprinkled across his cheeks.
âHave you ever thought about whatâs behind the portal?â His voice is gentle, steady. His aura flickers at the edges, brighter and fuzzier.
âNo. Weâve never gone into the Ghost Zone.â
âImagine itâs like the galaxy. Thereâs like, infinite galaxies. Just going on and on. Thereâs little pieces too. Sure you know that the ghost zone is through the portal, but have you ever wondered how it worked?â
She doesnât know if sheâs hearing things, but Phantomâs voice is getting weaker. His aura fizzling away like a candle on the last of its wick.
ââdid you ever wonder how it switched on? Whatâs at the end of the endless tunnel?â
Sheâs not sure whatâs going on. Or maybe she does. Phantoms drawling about the portal and sheâs sure heâs fadingâit doesnât make sense.
âWhy would we need to? Weâve never needed to know whatâs behind the portal!â She responds, frazzled, âItâs just a wall.â
The strong scent of decay hits her again, making her stomach flip. It makes her nose burn, head clammy. Maddie presses her hands to her face, spluttering.
The portal. Electricity.
The decay.
âAre you sure?â Phantom's voice is echoey now, distant. âOr have you been so blind that you never saw the truth rotting behind the green?â
When Maddie uncovers her hands, the overpowering smell is gone. As is Phantom.
Only her and the glimmering stars.
â
The litchenberg. Of course.
The portal is the only damned thing in that lab with a voltage strong enough to cause such damage.
Maddie doesnât even process coming back from the park until she yanks open the house door and runs into the kitchen.
âMads!â Jack says in surprise, halfway through a packet of fudge, âWhereâve you been?â
Danny. Danny.
Heâs in his room, has to be. She ignores Jack, dashing up the stairs, pleading that she wonât find what she thinks.
It canât be true. None of this is right. Dannyâs just...troubled. Sure, something is not right. But itâs none of this mess.
Behind her, Jackâs footsteps thump up the stairs, calling out for her in concern.
She rips the door open. Empty.
No unmade bed, or small lump of Danny under the sheets. No trash on the floor, strewn clothes.
âIs this about Danny?â Jack chatters, paling when he notices the absence, âMaybe heâs just ran off again?â
Maddie feels numb, heart sinking to her stomach. Her legs are heavy, weighted down by invisible anchors, chest feeling as fried as the portals shock.
God. The portal. That did this.
Their fault.
âJackâitâit was the portal!â She finally manages to gasp out.
And then theyâre in the lab, facing the green swirling vortex which reflects off of the tiles. Once a workplace, a sanctuary for her and Jack to make their weapons and research ghosts. Countless hours put into the Fenton brand.
How many of those are structured on lies?
Something catches her throat. There it is again, the putrid sweetness that claws into her lungs, makes her eyes water.
âSwitch it off.â Maddie splutters, stumbling forward towards the green door. Once their pride and joy.
NowâŠ
Jack presses the button. Sirens wail in her ears from the deployment.
And then they are in darkness. For the first time since initiation, the portal is still. No undertones of humming or neon green reflecting the walls.
Just stillness.
Maddie gulps, trying hold the bile rising in her throat.
âMadsâŠthereâs somethingâŠâ Jack whispers behind her, pointing directly at the back of the portal. Something small, a heap.
How long has it been here? Since the start? Just months?
Waiting. Decaying more by the day, desperately wanting them to set aside their blindness to realise what was lying infront of them the whole time.
Legs trembling, she traverses forward. The tang hits the back of her throat again, almost sickly sweet. Pasted into her memory for eternity.
And there something white juts up like a gnarled branch, gleaning slightly from the rubber material.
Itâs irrefutable. HAZMAT.
And then the other, gnarled arm, withered and blackened, crisped like a branch in a bonfire. Black hair upon its head, once downy, now stiff as straw, inky as raven feathers. Skinâor what was, withered and twisted.
Eyes neither blue nor green.
Yet unmistakably Danny.
