By Mother's branches, we're surrounded by ice. Caithe couldn't keep her eyes off the suspended fragments in the air, or the vanishing cloud that was her breath escaping her as she fought back the shock that was clawing up her chest and into her throat. She somehow channeled Jormag. It's like the jungle all over again. She'll lose herself to the dragon soon-

She shook her head, hard enough to make the leaves on her head rattle against each other. "Stop this," she muttered aloud.

"Caithe?" Kippa's voice, trembling and so small as to be almost invisible, caught her attention. She turned to look down at the asura, who had only just regained consciousness from where she'd collapsed in a heap after somehow healing Rhenn.

Who had only just witnessed what feat of magic she had unleashed upon an unready world.

Caithe took a deep breath, before making herself smile. "Sorry, Kippa. Just a bit lost in my thoughts for a moment. What did you need?"

"I don't know," she blurted, looking on the verge of tears as Caithe knelt down next to her. It was as the sylvari moved to her knees that she finally got a good look at the ice hanging in the air.

Embedded in each, there appeared to be iridescent fluid: a river of crystal like that Aurene created around her with her unique magic, moving at all times. Curious, Caithe glanced towards Rhenn to check the wound in his chest. There as well was a crystalline seam with that same fluid, pulsing and glowing faintly within.

"Kippa..." Caithe finally found her voice. "What is this?"

"Aurene says that I communed with her magic to save Rhenn. It's water magic merged with her crystal magic." Kippa wrung her hands while looking down at Rhenn. "I don't know how I did it, so please-"

"Oh no, no, I don't care to know that part." Caithe reached out to rest her hand on top of Kippa's hands, settling the asura's nervous fidgeting. "You saved him from dying, Kippa. That's what I care most about right now, for Aurene's sake. You did exactly what you should have done-"

She would have continued, but at that point Kippa flung herself into Caithe's arms with a sob. Caithe froze for just a moment in surprise, before gently pulling a hand over the asura's hair and making soft noises to try and calm her down.

Answering the question of what this insane amount of magic was, and what it could mean for them all, could wait for a moment more.

I almost forgot I'd wanted to respond to this! Anyhoo I've got a few, some of which are high profile toons of mine.

First is Laxzzi. Formerly a member of the Inquest, she voluntarily went through experimentation during her time there. This left her with her right eye altered, causing her to be able to "see" the ley magic gathered in a person. The stronger their magical affinity, the brighter the person glows. It gives her migraines, so she wears an eyepatch to cover it. She's since left the Inquest and works with the Order of Whispers with Agent Batanga, and the two got married sometime during PoF.

Experiment 74355, or Tress. A member of the Order of Whispers who had been infiltrating the Inquest, she eventually got found out. Captured and imprisoned, she was subjected to dozens of painful, invasive experiments meant to see how close they could force an asura's physiology to mimic a sylvari's. She developed plant-like tendencies, able to photosynthesize, with spores she can use to exert limited control over feral animals. She managed to kill her captors and escape, making her way back to the only thing she remembered from her life before: her girlfriend, Zrii.

And of course, Kippa! A Priory mender that drew up in Rata Thauma, the decimated city cube that had once been above the secret Thaumanova Reactor facility, her mother had a great deal of trouble having children. On the insistence of a friend, she went to a physician who promised to help, not knowing he was an Inquest researcher. The treatments infused her unborn baby with unprecedented amounts of dragon magic. Though Suzzi ended the treatments early on finding out the truth, her daughter wound up a frighteningly powerful elementalist with strong water and air attunements. Kippa only recently learned her magic was the result of an Inquest experiment.

And then... The Experiment himself. One of my alt commanders, Rhenn. His father Prikk was a talented geneticist who decided he wanted to create the "perfect" asura. Rhenn was custom designed in a test tube, made to be stronger, faster, and more resilient than other asura. He heals faster and rarely gets sick. Throughout the nineteen years of his life he spent within the Inquest, he was subjected to a dizzying number of experimental surgeries, never realizing this wasn't normal. After he was placed as commander during a PR stunt following the would-be-commander's death at Claw Island, he started slowly learning the sheer gravity of the abuse he endured growing up as nothing more than his own father's guinea pig.

Kippa can juggle!

Rhenn, despite everything his father tried to custom build into him, is allergic to roses. He didn't find out until he tried to get some for Kippa.

Vezz has a pet bone minion that for some reason would not fall apart, and its name is Mindless. It acts like a fat orange cat.

Billi, who is an aetherblade, is scared of heights.

...anyway. I can't imagine how scary that must've been for you. It was big enough to destroy the entirety of the city, and contaminated so much of that area with magical fallout. The Inquest certainly did a number on a lot of lives that day, but I think that the fact we're here at all is just as important a thing to remember as all the bad things that happened that day, you know?"

"Don't eat that!"

Kippa glanced over to see what the fuss was about, and immediately regretted it. A charr cub had their tongue out, ready to catch one of her magical ice particles on it, but was now pulling it back in as she was being scolded by what appeared to be her mother. "But Mama-" she started. "But nothing!" The older charr grabbed her by the arm, maybe too roughly. "Don't you understand that's magic ice? We don't know what it will do if you eat it." "But someone said it was magic from the commander's friend-" the cub tried again. "That was enhanced by dragon magic." The mother gave the cub a shake. "I won't have you getting magicked by a dragon! We're better than that! Now come along and stop trying to eat things that aren't good for you." Kippa watched, tears pricking at her eyes, as the cub trotted after her mother while still reluctantly looking back at the ice crystals hanging in the air, shimmering and perfect. She wanted to scream more than she wanted to cry, wanted to berate that mother for thinking she would ever harm someone's child with her magic. That she ever would harm anyone, period, with it. But another part of her knew, especially after Bangar's stunt, that trying to engage with anyone right now would probably just escalate things more than it would ultimately fix them. It isn't fair, she thought as she sat down on a nearby rock and rubbed the back of one hand across her eyes to try and stop the tears. I didn't mean to do this. I didn't even ask for this gift! But I can't ever tell anyone that because they'll either think I'm ungrateful or insane. Rhenn would- She stopped that thought hard, sucking in a breath. If she thought about him still recuperating with Aurene for too long, there definitely would be tears, and she had cried enough. Lu would understand, or Kudo. Or Iuno. There. That was better. And yet the tears rolled down her cheeks anyways, in spite of her best efforts. So she doubled over and let herself cry, figuring if there were tears left she would be better off to do so. The crying never seemed to fix anything nowadays, she mused as she dried her face after a few minutes, but it did at least make it feel like her heart didn't weigh so much.

"Don't let that gentle demeanor fool you," Gixx grumbled, shaking his head before looking back at Rhenn. "That girl has a will stronger than Deldrimor steel. She's beyond competent as a healer, stubborn as a dolyak, and the kindest person you'll ever meet. For all the hurt the world has handed her, she's given it back tenfold in care. It's hard to get close to her, as I'm sure you've noticed; she keeps people at arm's length to try to protect them, and to protect her heart... but when you do manage it, you will find a loyalty that runs deeper than the lines of magic in our world themselves. Just remember to never underestimate her strength, and know that kindness is not the same as meekness. Be good to her, Commander. My niece is all I've left in this world, and beyond that, she has suffered more than enough."

Thinking about Kippa as she's been developing even more recently, and Gixx talking about his niece to Rhenn around Season 3 as they were starting to get close. For all she's suffered, all she has ever chosen to do in response is to love the world all the deeper... even if it means blocking off her heart from it to keep from hurting worse.

Eye of the North during Icebrood Saga was a massive shift for all parties involved, but perhaps none moreso than Kippa. The soft spoken, shy elementalist was always known to be a powerful healer... but no one quite realized just how intense that magic was until Rhenn was slipping away beneath her hands.

She can save him... but she will never be the same again.
