For #januaryinjapan I thought I would share a post of my favorite books from Japanese authors. Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima I had never heard of before seeing on Bookslut’s list of the 100 best books of the 20th century. I was utterly hypnotized by it. Kitchen I read in college, and its charming melancholy made such an impression on me that it has stayed on my list of favorite books ever since. The Lake, also by Yoshimoto, is a little more on the melancholy side, but ultimately just as redemptive. Memoirs of a Polar Bear is almost a cheat, because while Tawada was born and grew up in Japan, she moved to Germany, wrote this book in German, and most of the action takes place in Germany. But it does also partly take place in Japan, and it still has somewhat of a Japanese feel to it, in ways that are hard for me to explain. . . Anyway, I am hoping I will also find time to read a few books from Japan his month (I have a few on my shelves!) but I wanted to take a moment to share these recs with you. 😁 . . This was such an unusual book with a unique concept. It was at times a challenge to read, but still a delight. It sometimes reminded me of Jeanette Winterson. A book about performing polar bears, certainly, but also about being rootless, foreign, misunderstood.
