Byun Baekhyun entered his apartment, the cold Russian wind blustering in behind him. He placed his keys in the small metal tray by the door, and paused. There was someone inside.

He'd been an agent long enough to sense when things weren't right, and currently all sorts of alarms were going off in his head. He closed the door as he normally would, then drew his gun from its concealed holster beneath his leather jacket.

He stepped quietly through the entryway and into the small living room area. There, on the couch, sat a beautiful young woman who appeared to be in her early twenties. Baekhyun pointed his gun at her, face stern and emotionless.

"Who are you?" He demanded. The young woman simply smiled.

"I'm Jun Kyungshi, and I'm from SM."

Baekhyn's eyes widened and his grip faltered. He thought he'd gotten out of all this.

"Why are you here?" He asked.

Kyungshi's fierce expression softened ever-so-slightly. Then she exhaled and replied, "We need your help Baekhyun."

He looked at Kyungshi as if she'd suddenly grown two heads.

"And why should I even raise so much as a finger to help SM, when being involved with them is what got my members killed?!"

Baekhyun was almost screaming now, all the emotions he'd kept locked inside for the last five years suddenly rushing to the surface.

Kyungshi's dark eyes were sad as she replied, "Because we can help you get revenge."

Surprised, Baekhyun lowered his weapon and holstered it. Taking a seat opposite Kyungshi, he eyed her expectantly. "Tell me your plan."

With a wide smile on her face, Kyungshi did as he asked.

the party was truly enjoyable. you had a smile on your face, a sincere one, while listening to the group chatting around you. jongin laughed hard at something mark said, hitting the youngest’s arm repeatedly. baekhyun caught on to the joke, not letting it die and making everyone laugh even more.

“it’s just like that! for real!”, taeyong said between laughs. 

you smiled to yourself at the sight of the six of them. superm was obviously a way sm found to put all of them to work even more than they already did, but the way they clicked was undeniable. the way baekhyun, taemin and jongin looked at the youngest ones made your heart warm, as you knew they saw themselves in those young eyes.

baekhyun took a moment to look at his members, like he was sharing the same thoughts as you. he grinned to himself, quickly looking down when he felt his cheeks burning. you remembered how excited - but also worried - he was when he became their leader, not sure if his experience in the field and being the oldest was enough to lead them. to say he wanted only the best for his personal friends and for the new kids was an underestimation, and anxiety ate him alive at that time.

every doubt he had faded away as time went by, as they recorded their album, their music videos, and even their own reality show. all the five of them, even taemin who despite being younger had more time in the industry, looked up at baekhyun and trusted him fully to take them on that journey. and for that, baekhyun was grateful.

“baby?”, you called him, catching his attention immediately and also receiving a few looks from his members. “can you get me another beer?”

you stretched your arm towards the cold metal bucket sitting on the tiny table in front of you. bottles were spread around it, all empty, but somehow the bucket was still full - probably someone from the bar reloaded it when you went to the bathroom.

“hm… don’t you think you drank too much already, bambi?”

“why should i?”, your boyfriend shrugged like it was no big deal. “i’m just a gentleman. learn how to treat your girl right, guys: do what they ask you, they know better.”

“or else you’re called a brat”, taemin completed, laughing too.

baekhyun’s attempt to brush it off didn’t work, and you could see on his face that he was trying to come up with a joke to get himself out of it.

“you should see who’s the brat when we’re alone…”, he said with a smirk on his face, and you just couldn’t believe it.

really? he would try to sound like he had any type of upper hand on you now? five pairs of eyes fell on you, closely watching as you looked at baekhyun in disbelief.

“are you sure you wanna play this way?”, you asked him.

baekhyun slowly looked at you, lips pressed into a line. you shot up an eyebrow, smirking at him like a challenge. he blinked a few times, mouthing a “i’m sorry” before turning to his friends again. 

the disbelief was now on jongin’s face, who stared at you with wide eyes. mark, just like a mirror, did the same a few seconds afterwards (when he understood what had just happened).

“i can’t believe it… you made him shut up!”, jongin exclaimed, the guys around him trying their best not to laugh. “i’ve been trying to do that for years now!”

“you better quit, jongin ah. you are not her”, baekhyun said, also reaching for another beer.

“what’s the secret?”, taemin asked, much to baekhyun’s annoyance.

“oh…”, you smiled. “he just knows that only good boys end up in my bed.”

again, baekhyun licked his lips. the laughing and screaming from his members weren’t enough to make him not look at you, desperately trying not to smile. 

you winked at him, before looking at the boys and seeing both taeyong and mark blushing. 

because, truth was: baekhyun was all loud and energetic around people, making everyone laugh and being the life of the party anywhere he stepped his foot in. he could easily give off dom vibes - or maybe not even dom, just the one who had the final word on your relationship. but you knew better than that.

he knew it wasn't the smartest excuse, he knew at least half of them would know what he meant - but the thing was, he didn't really care if they understood what he was about to do.

baekhyun got up as well, bowing to them as a way to say thank you. but as he turned around to leave, he heard taemin saying "just remember to use protection, hyung" and suddenly his ears were burning again.

knocking twice on the door, baekhyun heard your voice telling him to come in - so he did.

the office room was well lit with a long desk in the center of it and big, darkened windows all around it. it wasn't your first time sneaking around sm's building with baekhyun to find some time alone, so both of you knew that bit very well already.

what do you think bbh real personality is then? i think he’s deeply traumatised by the industry (particularly what happened with taeyeon, kaistal and chen + the ageism and lookism) and he’s incredibly insecure about his career future. it pains me to say it but I also believe he’s a lot less intelligent and much more lacking common sense than i originally thought which surprise me considering he entered the industry relative late for a kpop idol. like he’s a master manipulator but instead of using his tactics to ease his fans into a more normal behaviour for his age (be it dating, marriage or whatever else he wants to do but they consider wrong), he keeps the parasocialism to the max. 🤦‍♀️

i don't think he's any less intelligent or lacks common sense tbh. i think intelligent people can make bad decisions when they're put in an environment that fosters self doubt and systemically undermines your drive - and during the legal battle it was confirmed SM basically gaslit him into signing a contract renewal while he was enlisted by hanging the future of the other exo members over his head.

i think nuance is always lacking from these sort of discussions and exols specially have some of the worst reactionary and panic induced takes on what exo do - granted, because of a terrible track record that has traumatized the fandom at large.

as for the original question idk what his "real" personality is like.. but if i had to take a guess i'd say he is much more reserved, quiet and even distrusting - he has always said he keeps his circle small and i think he's incredibly protective of the people he cares about. while his fansona is all about being the center of attention and keeping people entertained, in private i think he is much more comfortable letting other people lead. a core personality trait for him that i think shows in both his on and off stage persona is his neediness. i think he yearns a lot - for what i don't know, and can be increasingly cagey when he's left vulnerable, to the point of lashing out or using humor as a coping mechanism.

while i think he likes to see himself as someone reliable and loyal and tends to work towards that, i think he dislikes the pressure of taking on that "caretaker" or "leader" role. (him agreeing to do it for superm was definitely just possible because of the pay and international promotion opportunities he never got with exo). in his mind he might not be "selfish" or at least consciously act that way, but at the end of the day, he abides by the golden rule: you gotta look out for number one.

as the youngest child, and someone who has always been honest about the way his family treated him growing up, a very treasured and some times spoiled kid, i think he tends to gravitate towards that sort of dynamic in his personal relationships. i think he relishes on the fact that fans are in a sense, an extension of that dynamic - people that gush over him and celebrate everything he does because that's the way it has always been for him. except with his personal relationships he is aware he can't manipulate (or at the very least, shouldn't) his way into getting what he wants.

when i say baekhyun is a skillful manipulator i mean that genuinely - and he's had enough charisma to make it work while playing this game of chicken with his own fandom, where both parties are aware of what the other is doing and what they get from each other, with him letting the real intentions behind his act peek through just enough to make it endearing enough for you to roll your eyes at him with fondness. sure - he's playing the fuck out of you. but he does so with a cheeky wink and enough self awareness that it manages to feel sincere, like an honest transaction between two parts.

all of this rambling... was just to say that the way he acts with fans and as a public figure shows just enough traits of genuineness for me to think that is what he operates like in his private life. the components are mostly the same, it's just the context that changes.

ok so in conclusion. he is an introverted, private person with a mean streak and a lot of charisma that carried him through his formative years, but deep down he wants to be good for the people he cares about and is in constant need of reassurance and praise. and he hates it when you call him out on it - he will ask you to pet him and bite your hand off when you least expect it unless you grab him by the scruff and make him take it. How many days has it been since you were discharged from the military?

Today is precisely the third day since I’ve been out.

You have finally gifted flower shoes to the fans. (‘Giving flower shoes’ is a Korean phrase that means returning to the significant other who had been waiting for their partner to return from military service.)

I know. Before I left for the military, I told the fans that many things could change in a year and nine months. How could I make them wait? I told them to focus on their own lives but come back if they feel like it when I return. I said, if anything, I would try to win them back again.

So, you recently did a live show to celebrate discharge. Seeing you’re still as bright and youthful, fans recalled the time you promoted your second solo mini-album, “Delight,” released three years ago.

Honestly, I was super worried. But I was relieved to see their warm reactions. I’m grateful to my parents. Haha.

You talked about your time in the army during the live show.

Most of my training campmates were born after 1999, except for a few. I was the eldest there. Everyone followed me like their older brother. I still keep in touch with the friends I met then. Yeah. My MBTI changed during the break from ISFP to ESTJ. I’ve been known as a homebody for a long time among my friends. But I’m actually an extrovert and a very active person. But when I look back on my childhood, I barely had time to spend at home. To the point where my mother always said, “How come I see my son only for breakfast?” I felt like I went back to my real self during the break.

Was it also a time to realize again what your fans mean to you?

Of course. I still have a long way to go to learn about the fans thoroughly. There’s something I learned this time, though. The fact that our existence to each other is a lot bigger than what we think. During the first year of my alternative military service, I looked back a lot. I watched a lot of the past concert videos. At concerts, I had a lot of fun with them. There were times when I saw my facial expression on the stage and thought I really did bust my butt to pull everything. Also, sometimes I felt really empty and felt this unfillable void. At one point, I thought, “Will they still be there?” while listening to the cheers of fans in those videos. They are like a really good teacher who would grade me and encourage me. They inspire me to do my homework. They have had me run, take lessons and become a better person. I want to do well to hear their acknowledgment. If they didn’t exist, I probably would not have tried so hard to come this far.

Your Namu-wiki page has a “Fan Love” section. As we read through the things you’ve said to the fans, we thought even a real boyfriend couldn’t say such sweet things.

Haha. Definitely my mom’s influence there. She speaks so gently. She is the sweetest person, really. And I am the youngest in the family. My family poured sweet love on me. Sometimes, fans ask me how I can speak so nicely. To be honest, I don’t know. I feel it’s nothing special, to me, a very ordinary and everyday thing.

It seems like fans could rarely feel the army break. You filmed 20 pieces of YouTube content ahead of time and released them during the break.

I know how hard it is to wait. Even when we did the EXO concert tour, we couldn’t release an album during that time. So it had been a long-standing concern about how to fill the vacancy. In particular, no one was trying to do something special to fill the vacancy during the military break. At first, I thought about making a small game instead of a video. Like the Tamagotchi game, fans can foster ‘Baekhyun’ from level 1 for 641 days while I am away. Feed him, water him. Haha.

The background in planning the pre-created YouTube Content was to give fans something to calm their longings, but also in some parts, wishing your fans would not forget you by watching these videos, right?

Yeah, that is pretty much it. Actually, I was swamped when we were filming the YouTube videos. I had a hectic schedule. It was just around when my third solo mini album Bambi came out, and on top of that, SuperM’s promotion overlapped. But after filming them, I felt so indescribably proud.

The 2021 album Bambi leaves much to be desired in some ways because it had no official activities due to your military service. Nonetheless, it recorded high sales, enough to bring the double million-seller title. It was also the album released in the year of your 30th birthday, showcasing your finest skills as a vocalist.

Bambi was created strictly with my own needs and vision. I tried everything I wanted to do without looking at anyone, and I wanted to free my mind by doing so. You are right. I put in everything I could as a vocalist. I first rearranged my vocal tone around the time of my first solo mini-album City Lights in 2019, and I wanted to see how much I had grown since then. I became very dedicated because I thought I could make a better sound than two years ago. I tried the vocal ranges that I wouldn’t have chosen in the past because I was too nervous. I purposely chose difficult music because I wanted to experience both failures and trials.

In particular, the title song "Bambi" seems to have been a regular song for the music school entrance exam that year. It’s perfect for showing off your vocal skills going back and forth freely with your falsetto, modal, and head voice.

Well, I don’t really recommend it. It’s a high-risk song, the beat and rhythm are tough. It’s a pretty challenging song to sing well.

With the release of Bambi, Baekhyun’s genre and brand have become more apparent. "Baekhyun" reminds us of groovy R&B beats from "UN Village" in the album City Lights and "Candy" in Delight.

R&B is a genre that I’ve been attached to for a long time, so I’ll continue with it. However, I also want new challenges. I want to try this and that without being too picky. I want to be an all-rounder. I’m interested in singing-rap these days.

Which musician are you paying attention to as a reference these days?

I’ve gotten closer to Colde recently. I like his singing style, and it’s fabulous that he pulls off the melody rhythmically as if he’s rapping. I’ve requested songs from Colde. I don’t know what kind of work will come out yet, but we’ll work together soon.

As a musician, there’s no more valuable experience than getting a “response” to your song. All three solo albums released so far have recorded respectable sales. Did you expect such success?

Not at all. It exceeded my expectations. This record was possible thanks to the efforts of many K-pop singers ahead of me. In particular, the sales volume of the second album was the highest in 20 years of Korean pop music history.

Delight became the first solo album to achieve the million-seller title, and you became the second artist to hold such titles for both the group and solo albums, following after Seo Tai-ji.

Yes, but it’s all thanks to the dedication of so many Korean musicians. As K-pop became more known worldwide, more people started paying attention to K-culture. The Korean artists before me had already paved the roads and I just got to piggyback on them.

I don’t feel any guilt when I listen to your music. Maybe it’s a complete anachronism, but there’s still a certain prejudice regarding idol music. Similarly, some idol music is referred to as a ‘hidden masterpiece.’ But when I listen to Baekhyun’s solo music, I feel like I’m just listening to really good music.

Thanks. I indeed paid a lot of attention to that. I chose a lot of genres that wouldn’t come from SM. SM prefers strong and intense sounds, but I wanted to focus on easy-listening music. It was partly because of my preference and strategic choice to differentiate between EXO and solo activities. Seeing that many of the tracks from my solo albums are still receiving a ot of love, I think it was a good decision.

It is common to spot excessiveness in solo albums by Idol group members. It was rather unique that Baekhyun has an easy mood, as you’ve just said.

I pushed for that. I kept thinking, ‘I’ll make more easy-listening music,’ ‘The music should not change in the middle,’ and ‘The melody should flow as expected.’ I wanted to minimize statement sounds and focus on the lyrics. There was even some feedback from the company that it fell short. But I kept pushing. My motto was to do something that sounds easy to people’s ears, like passive music, even if it may not feel ‘sophisticated or innovative’ for some.

What you just said seems connected to the question of, ‘what is good music to me as a musician?’

Probably. In a way, I’m making music that’s pleasant to listen to. But I don’t usually listen to a lot of music. My ears are so tired. Since I’m a singer, I need to know a lot of songs, but when I find one I like, I listen to it over and over. There’s something in common when I look at the songs I’m hooked on. It’s not too much, and it just has one or two significant factors.

For example?

I especially like old-fashioned pop songs. Fibo Bryson’s "Why Goodbye" is also a song that I love, for example. If you listen to it, there’s a particular section once in the bridge, once in the chorus, and once in the verse. You can listen to it comfortably, and the sound is completely filled with only vocals.

What is the vocal tone you pursue?

If I could have a voice that doesn’t go out of date, I couldn’t ask for more.

It’s also the most challenging thing.

I know. I once imagined, “Will Baekhyun’s episode of ‘Hidden Singer’ come out?” I don’t think so. Because my voice doesn’t have a distinctive feature. But it’s definitely a voice that can give you some comfort. A good tone depends on the time and taste. It’s something that keeps moving without being fixed. So I just want my voice to be peaceful and stable. I hope I can make the sound warm enough to relax your body. That’s all I want.

It’s been 11 years since your debut, and you’re still taking vocal lessons every week, right?

Yes. I have a big desire to evolve. I thought about it when EXO received a lot of attention with Growl in 2013. ‘Why are so many people going crazy? Am I really that good? I don’t think so. If the heat goes away, they will see me.’ That’s why I kept trying. I always criticize myself more than others do. It’s not a matter of high self-esteem and low self-esteem. I’m just continuing to make up for my shortcomings because I know my weaknesses better than anyone else.

To me, Baekhyun is not a person with low self-esteem but one who constantly and carefully self-censors himself.

Yes, that’s right. Maybe I am a perfectionist, and I hate it when there’s no complete ending. If I don’t think I can finish something properly, I don’t even start. I tend to get extremely disappointed with myself if I don’t do something perfectly at work.

A perfectionist who pursues easiness… It sounds hard. Haha

Haha. As a musician, I want to be an easy person who can blend in with the public. I don’t want to be a musician who is so cool that people admire and want to follow. I want to be someone people can talk to easily when they meet me on the street while listening to my song.

The only regret for Baekhyun as a solo musician is that he had little opportunity to tell autobiographical stories in music. What kind of stories do you want to tell through your music as 32-year-old Baekhyun?

I want to deliver encouraging lyrics. And deliver the message that you shouldn’t give up easily and try to face more challenges. I think the disappearance of the “Jeong” culture played a role in making people get easily tired these days. In the past, when a neighbor moved in, we used to make steamed rice cakes. If the next door neighbor cooks a lot of food, they would share it with others. But living in a disconnected world without affection, people seem to think only of themselves. I want to put a hopeful message in my song that we can all unite in harmony again.

It’s been two years since W Magazine and Baekhyun met—, since the cover of the March 2021 issue, right? Throughout today’s shoot, the staff said you were sexy. Baekhyun’s “soft sexiness” that you’ve shown in your solo career seems to be reflected in today’s shoot.

Sexy… Haha. I don’t think the sexiness that I have is the sexiness that’s full of intense emotions. It’s more like this. Sometimes you play with your friends, and you feel unexpectedly sexy. I think I have the sexiness to make people a little curious about me. Haha

Today’s shoot was with Cartier’s Tank Frances Watch and Icon Collection. These are pieces that have been called Wannabe by many artists for their timeless classic aesthetic. Regardless of timea and nationality, who is the greatest artist for Baekhyun?

Michael Jackson! Michael Jackson was the only artist who stood still on stage for a few seconds or minutes and people couldn’t stop cheering. His songs have made many people cry for a long time, giving them joy and happiness. So just seeing him standing still on the stage makes them tear up. There isn’t an artist who can beat Michael Jackson.

Still, what would be your secret weapon that you could win over Michael Jackson?

Hmm… My gentle way of talking? Haha.

EXO recently announced the news of EXO’s 11th-anniversary fan meeting. What would it look like if you were to compare EXO to family?

Children who were raised by a strict father but had an infinitely sweet mother? Maybe the stage is our dad. We work hard on stage until it feels like our bodies would break literally. But when we get off stage, we act like kids. Not one friend is rude, and everyone is so kind. When we talk to each other, there’s no difference from when we debuted 11 years ago or when we were trainees.

What are the three things Baekhyun is focusing on these days?

I’m into golf. Out on the golf field, my arms got so tanned, dark enough to leave a watch mark on my wrist. I feel very relieved when I go rounding and see the open space. The second one is the direction of the vocals. And for the third, I was going to say exercise but I’m going to change that. (Kim) Jong-kook, whom I became close with through workouts, said, “It’s time for you to focus on your back.” But hip workouts are too hard. Haha. The last one is EXO’s comeback. We will return as soon as possible with a high-quality album this year.

I've been a SHAWOL since 2010 and as much as I come to love other groups (MANY other 2nd gen groups, then BTS, EXO, GOT7, Stray Kids, Ateez) none of them can ever compare to how much I love and adore SHINee. I have absolutely been out of the loop of Kpop for a handful of years so I'm not up to date on everything they do but one thing is for sure I will always come back to them and support their careers, solo or together. I love watching them branch out and try new things. Key with his musicals years ago, Onew & Minho in their acting careers, Taemin when he joined SuperM (a bonus to that is having Kai & Baekhyun there too obv), Jonghyun when he hosted Blue Night, and just everything they all do in their solo careers. Music related or not. If anyone was to ever ask me who my ULT group is I wouldn't hesitate and say SHINee. Even if other groups were present, like all the love to other groups but I just love love love SHINee. They are my comfort. My heart.

hi I'm a new exol, could you pls explain the feud between sm and exo?

oh? welcome to the fandom, new EXO-L!!!! I was not expecting this question, ngl. I think this is very complex and I'm not the best person to answer it. However, you can still read my big ass ramble (with my weird english):

The history between EXO and SM has years, so there are a lot of moments where we had big problems and rn I can't expose or even remember them all. But it started with their debut. Yes, SM invested a lot in EXO's teasers and all, but it was not well received in korea and EXO were called at that time "SM's biggest mistake". It took a full year for them to have their first comeback with wolf... (and they were the new baby group of the agency). They also had a lot of anti-activity going on (even before they debuted, tbf), and to me SM never did sh*t to help them out . Till today, we still have a big anti EXO activity (including akgaes - they are very bad solo stans lol), but SM apparently doesn't know how to get into action and sue them lmao. We almost need to beg this agency to do something to deal with rumours, protect their artists... (example, if you search on twitter "Chen" "protect" "sm" you can find all you need). Kinda wild .

Not only that, but SM has the tendency to prioritize newer groups, and even when EXO was (or is) the group with most sales, we were having problems with underproduction, zero promotions activities, poor management, etc. SM loves sabotaging them lol.

I trully don't remember a comeback where we were not annoyed by SM's decisions. In 2015, for example, SM could have been smarter with call me baby and promote it more internationally. Spoiler alert: SM didn't do it. But funny enough, SM decided go to the international market with superm in 2019, where kaibaek were exploited and overworked (not saying the others weren't).

Furthermore, we are talking about a big agency who is known for having some problems related to... let's say, problematic contracts. Between 2014 and 2015, 3 chinese members filed a lawsuit against SM to terminate the contract, claimind unfair treatment, lack of support towards their activities and health, unfair payment and discrimination problems. A person could think this was going to be the last situation envolving an lawsuit... yeah, no, we have the most recent problem with CBX.

To me both baekhyun and taemin left sm for the same reason they joined superm: they wanted more international exposure. sm was never gonna give them that and seeing sm's trend in dungeoning their artists because of jyj lawsuit trauma, it makes sense that they wanted to leave.

This is specially true for taemin because it seemed that a world tour was non negotiable for him and sm denying it may have been his final straw after all. He also spoke in some interview about sm's major focus on youth and how that made him feel like his days were numbered (paraphrased). On top of all this taemin was 100% sm's darlingest boy when lsm was at the helm and given how much Chris lee hated anything lsm liked, he probably fell from grace within the company ranks and that must've sucked for him given how everyone always fawns over him lmao. Now that we know that he's in cahoots with lsm again, this might as well as be true.

But all that being said taemin definitely started some shit before leaving and it's coming back to bite him in the ass for sureee. sm is being openly antagonistic towards him specifically, even though technically taemin and onew should be in the same boat.

It may have something to do with the fact that he got a ceo fired indirectly once in 2023/24 (i don't remember if it was chris lee or somebody else) but who knows

Introducing: Heartsteel

Ezreal is the cute guy with the green hair and gold eyes, looks about the youngest of the whole group. He reminds me of Christopher mostly in his design but I would also like to point you to Heartsteel's latest (and first) music video Paranoia where you can see him in action. He just has this energy about him that makes me think of boy band AU Christopher Lightwood but where he also has nothing curbing his eccentricities, you know? Also, again, more musician than scientist.

Heartsteel is a fictional band from Riot Game's League of Legends. Basically, they're the male counterpart to K/DA, which you've almost definitely heard of, I'd say, even in passing.

Ezreal 'is the band's charismatic vocalist... evolved from a bubblegum-pop star to a bona fide artist with Heartsteel -- discovering a newfound autonomy in his craft. His character is brought to life by none other than Baekhyun, a renowned vocalist from K-Pop sensations EXO and SuperM' (Koreaboo 2023, n.p.).

He's a playable character/skin in the League of Legends game. Unfortunately, I am not a player and so I've only watched some game play clips online for some of these characters.

There's also no lore or wiki pages set up quite yet because Heartsteel's first official music as a band only came out nearly two weeks ago now. They've had a pretty successful debut so far, in my view, with their music video garnering 20M views already and many reaction videos from rappers on YouTube cropping up.

If you delve into fandom content, there's a lot of HCs that exist around the members of Heartsteel. I've been focusing mainly on Sett and sort of Kayn (Kayn caught my eye first, he's the introduction of the song, and he's very interesting, but Sett's energy, character, voice, they all piqued my interest and then before I knew it I was long gone down a rabbit hole).

Ezreal is really cool though. I don't know much more about him, there's still a lot of mystery around these characters. Anyway, I'm eager to find out more and see the full extent of their personalities as time wears on.

How long had they been practicing? Taemin didn’t know, couldn’t possibly remember. Since all their groups had different schedules, him, Baekhyun and Jongin hadn’t been able to practice with the other SuperM members. While Baekhyun was away on solo promotions, Taemin and Jongin tried to catch up to what they had missed. They had recording sessions, squeezed in between their individual schedules and earlier that week, a choreographer had taught them the new dances, well aware that the two could practice by themselves after being shown the choreography. He also gave them a recording, so they could watch and teach themselves whenever they got the opportunity to.

Taemin and Jongin had met up outside their official schedule almost every night to practice the new choreographies. They were the main dancers of their individual groups, so they had a reputation to uphold and if that meant sacrificing their sleep in order to perfect their dancing, so be it. Taemin’s head ached from the lack of sleep and he had seen Jongin down two painkillers earlier too, though the younger didn’t mention what was bothering him. The endless hours of additional dance practice left them both incredibly sore and their groups had already started go worry, though they knew that sometimes this hard work was what it took to achieve their success.

Having completely switched to auto-pilot, Taemin executed the moves from muscle memory, his mind blank. It seemed like he was looking at himself in the large mirror to monitor his dancing but he wasn’t actually aware of what he saw or did. Only an intense pain shooting up his leg and his vision tilting sideways brought Taemin back to focus, though not in time to catch himself. “Shit! Are you okay, hyung?”, Jongin gasped, dropping into a crouch next to his friend. Gritting his teeth as he sat up, Taemin forced out: “Ugh, yeah. Think so.” The younger offered Taemin a hand and pulled him up, only for him to stumble immediately.

“Fuck!”, Taemin hissed, clinging to Jongin’s shoulder for support, “I hurt my ankle. Just realized when I tried to put weight on it.” Suppressing a curse of his own, Jongin helped the older limp over to their bags where he sat down and dropped his aching head back against the wall. While Taemin dried his face and started to unlace his shoe, Jongin offered: “Do you want me to call anyone? Any of your members or your manager?” – “None of the members”, the other groaned, studying the already developing bruise around his ankle, “I hope they’re asleep ‘cause our schedules have been tough. Maybe my manager or one of the company drivers? It’s already starting to swell, so I should probably get it looked at maybe have an x-ray taken.” – “I’ll call your manager”, Jongin nodded sympathetically, “He can take you to the hospital and adjust your schedules depending on the diagnosis.”

While they waited for Taemin’s manager to come and pick him up, Jongin got a bottle of ice cold water from a vending machine and poured it onto his friend’s towel before carefully draping the cold fabric around his ankle, hoping to dull the pain a little. “Thanks”, Taemin panted, “I’ll text you once I know how serious it is. Hope it’s just a sprain.” Jongin hummed in agreement, contemplating whether he should continue practicing on his own or call it a day to avoid injuring himself due to his exhaustion.

When Taemin had left with his manager, Jongin took a bathroom break to make up his mind and assess just how bad his exhaustion was. On his way back to the practice room, he ran into Minho, the older not yet having headed home. Jongin quickly told Minho about the accident and the other advised him not to keep practicing or else he might hurt himself too. Once they parted, Minho called their manager and agreed to meet them at the hospital.

Surprisingly, the waiting area wasn’t as packed as Minho had feared it’d be and he joined their manager, taking a seat in one of the uncomfortable plastic chairs. There were no updates yet but they distracted themselves from the wait by discussing the possible changes that could be made to the groups schedule to accommodate Taemin’s recovery. Eventually, Minho looked up to see his dongsaeng hobbling towards them on crutches.

“Just a sprain”, Taemin announced with a tired smile, “What are you doing here, hyung?” – “I ran into Jongin and he told me what happened, so I wanted to see how you’re doing and if you need help”, Minho explained, “If you want, you can stay with me for a couple of days. I can help you out while you’re on crutches.” The younger felt the need to refuse, not wanting to burden his hyung but he was also exhausted to the bone and tired of being alone. It was especially at times of overlapping schedules and physical injuries that his mind questioned why he was doing this to himself and if it was the right path. Maybe he’d go with Minho, if just for the company and comfort he provided.

“’m so glad they gave me something for the pain”, Taemin yawned as they got into the car, “I can still feel it pulsing but my head feels better.” – “What about your head? You didn’t hit it when you fell, did you?”, Minho frowned worriedly. The younger shook his head before resting it on Minho’s shoulder, breathing: “My head was killing me earlier. Probably why I didn’t pay attention and tripped myself in the first place. The headache’s gone now though.” – “You’re unbelievable “, the older sighed, “You should’ve rested before it reached that point, you fool.” A sleepy smile played across Taemin’s face because he could hear the fondness in the other’s voice despite the scolding.

Taemin must have fallen asleep on Minho’s shoulder somewhere along the way because the next thing he knew was his hyung shaking him, encouraging: “Come on. Let’s get you upstairs and I’ll fetch you an icepack for your ankle before you’re going to sleep. Can’t let your exhaustion make you even clumsier and get you into more trouble.”
