This Golden Mile
Leicester’s Golden Mile, which stretches along Melton Road before turning into Belgrave Road, has been home to a diverse, largely South Asian population for as long as Kavi Pujara can remember.

Who should be the voice actor for Yellow Brick Road? I headcanon Steve S. Burster's voice actor to be Billie West, preferably his Fry voice from Futurama.
Well, let's see, Melton Citron is voiced by the singer he is based off of, Elton John.
I would say a good voice for Yellow Brick Road would have to be a middle between being a melodic, accented voice and the average yet comedic voice of Fry.
With that in mind, I'd say the headcanon voice for Yellow Brick Road would be Jemaine Clement, who voices Nigel from Rio and Fart from Rick and Morty. I feel his general speaking voice definitely fits our hippy and musical fusion, heheh!

I like to play the game of “amazon says my package is 4 stops away, does that mean it’s around the block or in a random field”
#9/10 it’s in a random field#babygirl i have learned the names of towns god shouldn’t even have created. by using my amazon tracking#i don’t know what goes on in the town of melton bottom (lol) but i know my packages always seem to be sitting there for a WHILE#and i don’t even live near there#it’s just a little bit surreal. like yeah i live rural but there’s…. there’s like a few places between me and the depot 2 hrs away. right?#like when i lived in leeds i’d get ‘your package is 3 stops away’ and i could see the van from my house#they’d be delivering to the stoned undergrads across the road#but here it’s just like. okay so i’m not seeing my dog’s medicine; my new wallet; my fly paper or the other thing for at least like 2 hrs#gotta love rural yorkshire. i will continue to refuse to live anywhere else#personal

(Tommy's pov of this)
He's in the process of making sure the bird is ready to go when he turns and sees Howie, as well as two unfamiliar young guys following him.
Good-looking faces too. Maybe they should do the calendar next year. The shorter one has large, soulful eyes and a confident stride that speaks of military experience; the other is a tall, leggy man with a boyish smile and seems to be visibly thrumming with energy.
Of course they bring in the studs after I'm gone, Tommy thinks, half-exasperated that he's missed out on eye candy and half-amused at his own shallowness.
"Howie, hey!" Tommy says and embraces his former colleague and current friend. It's not always possible for them to meet up, but a life debt is not something Tommy will forget. "Long time."
Howie claps him on the back. It feels like a silent thank you, which, given the enormity of what they're going to do, the less said aloud the better.
Can't risk someone overhearing that they're going to steal a helicopter on a mere hunch.
Tommy knows he has a good poker face, and it's proven to be effective because no one seems to realize how nervous he is. They may cause an international incident if anything goes "pear-shaped", as his old instructor Winslow used to say, but Tommy isn't about to back out now.
"This is Tommy, Tommy Kinard," says Howie to the other two, telling them about him being a former member of the 118 and also about his being a fathead. At least Howie acknowledges that Tommy's grown out of it.
"Thanks to you," Tommy says. He sticks out his hand to the new faces.
Soulful Eyes grins when he grasps Tommy's hand. A firm grip, almost challenging. "Eddie Diaz."
Tommy smiles, feeling like he's found a kindred spirit. "Pleasure. And you are...?" He extends the hand to the other young guy.
"Uh, Evan," he says, eyes wide and curious like a puppy in a new environment. His hand is warm and dry. "E-Evan Buckley."
"Hi Evan." The splotch just over Evan's left eye is a birthmark, Tommy discovers. To his amusement, Evan doesn't let go of his hand, as if he's completely forgotten that they were just shaking hands in introduction. Tommy doesn't want to embarrass the guy, but he doesn't want to rudely snatch his hand away either. He opts for a slight tease. "I'm gonna need that hand to fly the chopper, kid."
"Oh! Oh, right. Sorry." Evan drops Tommy's hand like it's hot. His ears go red. Tommy thinks, That's so cute, and then sternly warns himself not to read too much into anything. He's not falling for a straight guy again, just because they're cute. And he's glad that he doesn't read too much into Evan's fluster because Evan says, "I was just, um, thinking, about Cap and Thena."
Bobby Nash must mean a great deal to Evan, judging by the way his gaze skitters from Tommy's face to the chopper and bounces lightly on his heels. For some reason, he reminds Tommy of Bambi.
Howie sticks his hands in his pockets. "Yeah, we're gonna need Hen to show soon with some coordinates. Can't go flying all over the Gulf of Mexico."
Tommy makes a mental note to re-check fuel levels. It's definitely topped up, but ninety minutes one way and ninety minutes back in what will definitely be rough conditions is not a walk in the park. Nevertheless, he keeps his tone light. "We'll do what we can."
A pair of headlights slide along the road that leads to harbor. Tommy doesn't really know if it's Hen, but his nerve is starting to give, so he says quickly, "Wait, I see a car pulling in. Might be her. Get in the backseat, strap yourselves in. Once I get Hen clear of Melton, we'll dash. Hopefully she has a good cover story..."
Eddie doesn't hesitate as he scrambles in, nearly knocking his head on the roof of the chopper.
Seeing that they aren't about to call him out on his fake calm demeanor, Tommy blows out his cheeks to center himself. Then he smiles, asking, "If we're all arrested, can I blame it on you, Howie?"
Howie snorts as he gets in next to Eddie. "Yeah I really twisted your arm with the 'Please help us save Cap and Athena'."
(In fact, Howie actually said, "Hen has a hunch, she won't let us help, but she''ll need a chopper. So I'm gonna need you to steal one for us to save Captain Nash and his wife." And Tommy agreed instantly. He trusted Hen Wilson's hunches too.)
"You know it's because of your irresistibly pretty face," Tommy quips as he helps guide Evan - the tallest of the three - in without hitting his head. "Alright, put those helmets on. Careful, Evan," he says when Evan nearly bounces the helmet off the bridge of his sharp nose.
It's a very nice nose. Be a shame to bruise it.
Fuel. And preflight. Tommy inhales sharply and gets into his seat as the three firefighters strap themselves in. It's a calming ritual by now, and he feels ready. He knows he is ready.
And Hen should be here by now.
"Alright. She's ready to go when we are," Tommy announces, patting the stick fondly. As he opens the door to get to the hangar, he says to the three men, "Don't touch anything. I'm gonna hang out near Melton and run intercept."
Howie rolls his eyes. Eddie holds up three fingers of his right hand, like a Scout's promise. "We'll behave."
Evan beams a dazzling smile at Tommy, like they're not actually about to commit a crime.
It's a good thing Tommy has to focus on flying into a hurricane, because otherwise his heart will be tripping all over itself to get Evan to smile like that once more.
Nope. No crushing on a straight guy, Kinard, we've been through this.
Instead, Tommy jogs towards the hangar where he sees Hen approaching Melton, holding a form that Tommy knows will not stand up to scrutiny.
Boy, if you can't convince someone, confuse them, Winslow used to say over drinks after their flying lessons. Act like you know exactly what you're doing and seventy percent of the time they'll let you get away with it.
Tommy takes a deep breath, puts on a smile, and walks into the light of the hangar.

Two naked men walking down the street
Location: UK (Melton, England; Burton Rd) 🇬🇧 Year: 2018 Genre: Walk of shame
Two men were spotted walking just in their shoes on the Burton Road in Melton, England. It happened on Saturday morning, around 7:30 on April 28, 2018 . Weather at that time could have been about 12 degrees Celsius (which is 53 F)
The men were passing some people who reported it to the press few days later. Most of the comments was pointing that the men took of their clothes and walked naked on purpose, but that wasn't entirely true.
Based on what we know, which is:
the men were walking naked in a cold weather
the men were covering their genitals with their hands
the men were reported to be arguing with each other; one witness has commented that they were blaming each other for something that happened
This indicates possible scenario, that the men were robbed of clothes or forced to give up their clothes and walk away naked as part of some kind of punishment for something they had done.
Both men look young, they are probably at their 30s. They are white. Both of them have tiny butts.
Notice the hand of the man on the right; he's making an explanatory gesture, like if he was saying: " I told you we shouldn't have got into that car" or "I told you we should've walked that way".

For many years the authorities have tried to nail down the facts surrounding the death of "classic film noir." Some reports indicated that it died in 1957, on the edge of a polluted creek in the California border town of Los Robles. Others claimed that in 1959 it was blown to kingdom come in a refinery explosion outside the upstate New York town of Melton. Our sources indicate that Noir- the original, the one bred from the craft and politics of the Hollywood studio system- actually perished in a lonely motel room in California's central valley. Noir had registered under an assumed name- Marie Samuels- after stealing twenty-five grand from the real estate office in Phoenix where she worked. Typical of Noir- and impetuous crime, comitted in the throes of passion. We'd been down this road before: the volatile sexuality leading to criminal behavior, the moral ambivalence, the desperate flight. All the icons and imagery were firmly in place. Then Noir had a nice long talk with lonely young Norman, the proprietor of the motel, and she decided that crime didn't pay after all. She realized it was a hopeless blind alley. Like Danny Hawkins in Moonrise, she decided to turn herself in and face the music. A nice hot shower would cleanse her of her sins. That was the night Noir died.

Your Golden Globes Nominations. A lot of "yays" and some
Best film – drama
Anatomy of a Fall Killers of the Flower Moon Maestro Oppenheimer Past Lives The Zone of Interest
Best film – musical or comedy
Air American Fiction Barbie May December The Holdovers Poor Things
*Musicals being shut out of the musical category is comedy. THE COLOR PURPLE is sensational. WONKA is enjoyable. I don't see how both could be ignored in favour of MAY DECEMBER.
Best female actor in a film – drama
Annette Bening, Nyad Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon Sandra Hüller, Anatomy of a Fall Carey Mulligan, Maestro Greta Lee, Past Lives Cailee Spaeny, Priscilla
*Glad Bening pulled it out of the gate. Mulligan is wonderful in MAESTRO, but NYAD is a meatier role.
Best male actor in a film – drama
Bradley Cooper, Maestro Leonardo DiCaprio, Killers of the Flower Moon Colman Domingo, Rustin Barry Keoghan, Saltburn Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer Andrew Scott, All of Us Strangers
*I've seen all nominated performances and it's Keoghan for me. At the very least with 3 Irish men nominated, one has to take it. It will bring shame to the island to not.
MORE NOMINEES
Best female actor in a film – musical or comedy
Alma Pöysti, Fallen Leaves Fantasia Barrino, The Color Purple Jennifer Lawrence, No Hard Feelings Natalie Portman, May December Margot Robbie, Barbie Emma Stone, Poor Things
*Hated MAY DECEMBER so, with the exception of Charles Melton, I am flummoxed by the love for it. Barrino was incredible in THE COLOR PURPLE and deserving. Would have been thrilled to see Eve Hewson for FLORA AND SON nominated.
Best male actor in a film – musical or comedy
Nicolas Cage, Dream Scenario Timothée Chalamet, Wonka Matt Damon, Air Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers Joaquin Phoenix, Beau Is Afraid Jeffrey Wright, American Fiction
*I would take out Chalamet and replace him with THE HOLDOVERS' Dominic Sessa.
Best film – animated
The Boy and the Heron Elemental Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Suzume The Super Mario Bros Movie Wish
Best film – non-English language
Anatomy of a Fall Fallen Leaves Io Capitano Past Lives Society of the Snow The Zone of Interest
*Heard wonderful things about The Zone of Interest, Past Lives and Anatomy of a Fall, but the only one I've seen is SOCIETY OF THE SNOW and it is staggering.
Best female actor in a supporting role in a film
Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer Danielle Brooks, The Color Purple Jodie Foster, Nyad Julianne Moore, May December Rosamund Pike, Saltburn Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
*This was pretty much my picks with the exception of Moore. I don't know who I would have swapped her out for but what she does in MAY DECEMBER compared to these other nominees is woefully underwhelming.
But I'm 1000% Rosamund Pike. Would be thrilled with a Brooks or Randolph win.
Best male actor in a supporting role in a film
Willem Dafoe, Poor Things Robert De Niro, Killers of the Flower Moon Robert Downey Jr, Oppenheimer Ryan Gosling, Barbie Charles Melton, May December Mark Ruffalo, Poor Things
*I'm a contrarian so I want Melton to win it. He was shockingly good in MAY DECEMBER. But I would be happy with Gosling or DeNiro
Best director – film
Bradley Cooper, Maestro Celine Song, Past Lives Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer Greta Gerwig, Barbie Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon Yorgos Lanthimos, Poor Things
*Cooper wont' get it, but he deserves it. He did a fantastic job with MAESTRO. I am gunning for Scorsese.
Best screenplay – film
Barbie Poor Things Oppenheimer Killers of the Flower Moon Past Lives Anatomy of a Fall
*Emerald Fennell's SALTBURN not getting nominated in this category is a crime.
Best original score – film
Poor Things Oppenheimer The Zone of Interest Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Killers of the Flower Moon The Boy and the Heron
Best original song – film
Addicted to Romance, She Came to Me Dance the Night, Barbie I’m Just Ken, Barbie Peaches, The Super Mario Bros Move Road to Freedom, Rustin What Was I Made For?, Barbie

Yellow Brick Road hums to himself, his eyes closed as he was lulling himself to sleep.
Calen Talichio lied on their back, staring up at the ceiling for a bit. Giul liked to stare at the ceiling before he fell asleep, though the Dib part of them was popping candy in their mouth.
@nintendoneko64 @dib-thing-wannabe
D brings in a gigantic bed (with a thick, soft blanket and pillows on it) and places it next to the gigantic cat bed.
D: This bed is for the fusions with no animal qualities. Let's put em all on here! And yes, this includes fusions involving your OCs, fusions involving my OCs and yours, fusions involving Dib @dib-thing-wannabe, fusions involving @redscorpiocat's OCs, etc. :D
Camillaron lays in the bed peacefully.
Melanoplus Anbeißen is tossing and turning in the bed. She accidentally clones herself in her sleep. The clone then unintentionally pushes Charity Cremebleich out of bed.
Cassette is whimpering in bed, since they are having a nightmare. Toni Crumblecomb takes notice and seems concerned.
Miss Malt Shake lies down, comfortable counting sheep. Jeanette Vendella is reading a manga.
Talia Spicefroth is deep in sleep, with an eyemask on.

⸻ CHARLES MELTON. HE/HIM / have you ever heard of NARROW by mayday parade, well, it describes VINCENT PARK to a tee! the thirty one year old, and COOK AT BELLE NOURRTURE was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know them? would you say HE is more finicky or more RELIABLE instead? anyway, they remind me of low volume sitcoms as background noise, clothes overflowing from dressers, a bemused smirk, and new burn marks on steady hands, maybe you’ll bump into them soon!
time in notting hill: three years
As far as Vincent was concerned, he had the best life. Growing up with a stay at home mom, a dad who always came home for dinner, and a sister who was something like a shadow, there was few things he could think of that would have made life easier.
As a child, if Vincent wasn’t playing with Coraline, he was under his mother’s feet in the kitchen. Sure, the young Park boy loved eating, but he loved watching - and eventually helping - his mom craft each dish with so much love. Meal times were like a ritual, and they were something that Vincent held very close to his heart.
High school brought on sports and new friends, but to him, there was an unspoken rule about always being home for dinner, if he could help it. Some people didn’t understand why Vincent was so close with his family, and why he tended to put spending time with them above everything else, but to him, it was a no brainer.
When he wasn’t studying or practicing, he was still helping his mom cook, and eventually decided that cooking was what he wanted to do. As graduation soon approached, he started scoping out culinary schools and programs nearby, and with his family’s blessing, dedicated his life to honing his craft.
Cooking brought him the kind of happiness it always did, and getting to do it for a living was the extra piece of the puzzle Vincent didn’t even know he was missing. He tried to get jobs close to his family, as he preferred to continue to live at home to help out where he could, as well as save up for a trip to Europe. While he hated being away from his family, the idea of traveling and eating all different kinds of food was very appealing to him.
He’d saved up enough money to go to London, and as a surprise, invited Coraline to come along with him. The plan was to backpack across all of the UK and Europe, but once they got to London, it was evident that it was a lot easier to get places than they originally thought. So, since they were already there, Vincent decided to get a place to live and a job, taking holidays to go to different cities and towns to explore the cuisine, but still have somewhere close to call home.
While he misses his parents a lot, and tends to FaceTime with them every few days, he at least has Coraline to keep Notting Hill feeling like home.

WRITTEN BY: Janessa (she/her) est.
BACKGROUND / BIO
TRIGGER WARNINGS: bullying, injury, sports injury.
Meet Xander. Not Alexander, not Alex, just Xander. Simple.
The first born of the Stone children came into the world with a bang - a couple of weeks earlier than planned, in the middle of the night, screaming his tiny lungs out as soon as he’d left his mother’s body. What his parents didn’t know at the time was that the manner of his birth would be indicative of what they should have expected from him in general. From a very young age, he was always pushing to do things sooner than he was expected to - trying to sneak out of his crib, starting to walk before learning to crawl first, reaching for objects and almost knocking a number of things over his head - he was curious, energetic, and drained his parents’ energy as they ran around after him and tried to keep him out of trouble. It was a wonder they decided to have more children after what he put them through. Perhaps they’d hoped that another kid would give him someone to play with at home and give them some time to themselves.
The day his baby sister was born was the day Xander deemed as the worst day of his life. He grew up in four bedroom, three bathroom house with the perfect yard in Grand Forks, North Dakota and enjoyed life with his parents and the family down the road. The Stone clan lived extremely comfortably due to dad, Jonathan, being a well-known generational corn and beet farmer and mom, So-yeon, a farm-to-table chef to be reckoned with. To say the Stone children grew up spoiled would be a safe and accurate statement. Xander’s parents met when his mother came to the United States from South Korea for schooling, going to Vanderbilt University. And when they both graduated, his mother stayed in America to start a life with Jonathan in his hometown of Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Xander loved having his parents’ attention all for himself - a bit of a greedy shit right off the bat, but he loved genuine affection and love. In fact, the boy was lucky enough to have that with two families: his own and the one down the road. His mom was best friends with the pretty neighbor lady with the pretty daughter who was close to Xander’s age. The two had been forced on play dates as the two mothers lived their dream and promise to raise their first borns together. When his sister came into the picture, Xander felt as though he was now boring, unwanted, and worst of all, replaced. He despised the baby girl from a young age and oddly enough, the neighbor’s daughter didn’t seem so bad anymore. A very long story short, a friendship and admiration grew between the two over the years while Xander tried to not resent being a brother. It wasn’t until his sister’s first crush broke her heart when she was seven that Xander felt any real ‘brotherly’ feelings towards his sister. He liked to think that he was empathetic with her, but it wasn’t that. It was more so that he did care, but there was opportunity for him to help her, protect her, and threaten the little shit that rejected his sweet sister. That started the hero complex and co-dependency issues that he and his sister share.
Life was pretty easy for him when he was in his earlier years, he was always pretty much a good kid who was raised to be polite to others and also just be himself. Fortunately, ever since he was a young child, Xander had the type of personality that just drew people into him and he got along with everyone.
It wasn’t until a stutter took a solid hold on his tongue, sending him tripping over words as fast as he could think them and forcing him to slow down if he wanted to be intelligible at all. While his family always had patience, coaching him through words he couldn’t handle or speaking for him when it got too bad for him to speak for himself, children were not so kind to things that were different from them. Xander ended up being teased relentlessly through his early schooling with only the help of his parents to hide behind, a saving grace that made him realize how much his parents truly loved him.
So the young boy turned to the only place he felt safe; he turned inside of himself. Introspection became Xander’s past time, and introversion was his source of comfort. Jonathan and So-yeon couldn’t fight his battles forever. The sport of hockey was an invaluable resource, where he could sit in front of a television and watch games that could take him away from the days at school. Most days he spent struggling through book reports when he wasn’t too busy tripping over his own tongue arguing with the boys who didn’t have anything nice to say.
Eventually, he ended up in speech therapy to overcome what was clearly a detriment to his education. What Xander managed to learn there was that if the words were written down first, he could read them better - not perfectly, not at first, but if he wrote down what he wanted to say, the letters didn’t stick to his teeth. It left him with binders full of sentences, answers to questions, orders from restaurants, conversations at the dinner table and PowerPoint presentations, and though it took nearly a full year to fully clean up his speech, Xander managed to wrestle his words into submission, reaching a point where he only stuttered when under stress or pushed to his emotional limits.
Xander’s interest in hockey would start at a young age, when he’d find himself simply tuning in to the many hockey games that his parents played around the house - to the point that he easily memorized positions and the players. Since he lived not too far from the University of North Dakota, he used to go the university’s hockey games as a little kid and that was how he found a love for hockey. It was one of the few things that kept his attention and Xander just knew he was meant to play. Xander was one determined son of a bitch. As soon as he got the idea to be a hockey player in his head, he stuck with it. As a child, he begged his parents to put him into a kiddie league and they ultimately said yes.
Hockey was something that Xander poured all of his energy into. His home life was filled with homework and watching his sister, but hockey practice was where he could be freed from all of that. He lived for practices and games for that reason alone. Hockey had always been one of the very many steady things in his life. Growing up, Xander wasn’t exactly a star student in his classes. He was smart, but not in a conventional sense. If you asked him the quadratic formula, he would look at you like you were speaking a foreign language like Swedish to him. However, if you asked him about who won the Stanley Cup in 1998 and the player statistics of that year, he’d be able to essentially recite a Wikipedia’s worth of information without any hesitation.
To avoid the extra-curricular tutoring that his parents insisted he needed if he was going to go get into a good school, he headed for the rink. The year Xander turned thirteen, he made his town’s youth hockey team, preparing himself for the dream of making the NHL in a few years time. His small town team took home the championship the year he was named captain. “He’s the strongest center I’ve seen in years,” noted one of the coaches. It was the height of Xander’s teen years. He was invincible - eternally youthful. His parents stressed that he couldn’t rely on his body or physical prowess to carry him through life. “Your mind is the only reliable tool you are given,” they countered. Because they didn’t want their son to neglect his grades, they set out new rules: homework must be done on the way to and home from the rink, at least, and he had to help out around the farm once a week. Even though they wanted Xander to keep up with his schoolwork, his parents were the most supportive when it came to hockey. They cheered him on at every game, allowed him to get the best equipment, and even created a hockey rink in the backyard for him to skate on when the roads were terrible during the winter months.
2011 was a whirlwind year. Before then, Xander was just another small town boy with dreams of going to “the show”. There were plenty of bull-headed, ambitious boys that were willing to work for it, ones better than him, critics said, but they didn’t have the heart he did. There was nothing more important than following his dream - not prom, not exams, not video games, not friends. Xander was that boy, the one with no Plan B. People would roll their eyes when he missed another party or had to reschedule a test because of practice or games. But those same people were in the stands, cheering him on through every goal and assist after he made the USNDPT down in Michigan and could finally say he was an elite hockey player. How fast he became a prominent fixture on the team’s leader board in scoring surprised nearly everyone, except him, of course. Sure, Xander’s parents shoved university brochures down his throat every chance they got, but so did everyone else. “Hockey isn’t a concrete career Xander, you have to have a backup plan” rang in his ears, but instead of discouraging him, it spurred him harder. In every news interview, he was prepossessing - with dark hair, maturity, and experience oozing out of every word. Whether it was an act or not, it looked good. This wasn’t a dream, it was a pending reality. The charming, big-hearted boy matured into a courageous, focused, but still bullish, young man those seasons.
Since he wasn’t eligible to be drafted just quite yet, Xander decided to leave the development program to attend Boston University and play for their hockey team. Allowing him to continue his studies while still being able to play hockey. When he was a freshman, he suffered a very serious knee injury while on the ice and in front of scouts. Xander had undergone arthroscopic knee surgery and was expected to miss at least twelve weeks, frustrated that he missed a chance to show off his hockey skills in front of important people who could get him to his dream of being in the NHL. For Xander, his saving grace came when the doctors told him that he could play again once he healed from his injury, allowing him to stay on his quest to become a professional hockey player.
It took a little while and some extra hard work, and after going through a lot of physical therapy, by the age of nineteen, Xander was a first round draft pick for the Calgary Flames and was officially on his way to being a professional hockey player, just like he’d always wanted. Hearing his name called for the NHL draft was almost a distant memory; the memory muddled like a far off dream. In reality, it was a binding contract that said where to be and when, a hefty salary with strings attached, plus a shiny signing bonus. However, he could only sign to the team after he completed his four years at Boston University, a request from his parents. And his knee must stay healed and solid or everything would be snatched away, no pressure. Even still, they must have enlisted a wide angle lens to fit his smile in the frame. His friends cheered him on from their screens at home, understanding why the boy was always on the go, had time for no one but himself, still bore a heart of gold. Xander was on a plane that night, flying back to Boston, and shared dorm that would be his home for almost three months until he secured housing downtown. That year he spent busting his balls for the team that allowed him to shine like the star he was, proving himself to men ten years his senior, and adding on to his hero complex. Being on a team with other elite hockey players could’ve made Xander look like an amateur, but all his hard work would pay off, as he got show the world just how great of a player he was.
Seeing all of the changes in his life and the change in his personality, his parents were calling almost every night to tell him that it wasn’t too late to back out of playing professionally and playing in college. His sister constantly asked him if he was doing okay. His rehab doctor constantly badgered him with distress about missing physiotherapy appointments. Xander rarely, if ever, kept in contact with any of his hometown friends and found himself feeling more distant from them than ever. Leaving everyone behind in North Dakota to start fresh. This was a new life, it was serious, this was adulthood. They would only interfere or pull him off track, and one injury had done that enough already. No one was slowing him down now, a pig-headed boy, and he didn’t know how to stop even if he wanted to.
Xander became quite a popular player throughout the division, leading the division in goals. Despite putting up career numbers in goals and assists, he became a hot topic from setting a record for most minutes in the penalty box. Xander tended to be a pretty physical player, bumping people from behind or hitting them into the boards. He’d been suspended on more than one occasion, which would make him be considered a dirty player. Many players weren’t too keen on his style of playing. But it never deterred him, he loved the physicality of the sport, the sheer amount of strength and endurance it took to keep up.
If Xander’s hockey career couldn’t get better, it most certainly did when Boston University won the Beanpot championships in his third year with the team. And so then he became a championship winner, playing beside his favorite players, hanging with his friends, drinking more than he should, risking more than he should, loving more than he should. A mix of contrary traits and confusing quirks that defined his life as a hockey player.
It was the season after Xander’s most successful season when everything changed. His dedication and award-winning attitude landed him on center ice, staring down Boston College’s most beloved player across the center line. After the referee blew her whistle in the third period, Xander saw nothing but black. A hard hit was a hard hit, but this was more - it was personal. Xander must’ve chirped them a little too much a few moments before because he found himself screaming in agony as he laid near the boards. It was another serious injury added to the list. A grade II separation of the acromioclavicular joint, also known as a shoulder separation. It could have been worse. His mother swore she saw his clavicle hanging from a thread. The player from Boston College said it was an accident, but that was just hearsay. It didn’t matter what the player said, they were benched for the rest of the game. For Xander, it was six weeks of recovery, three months of rehab - no one could take this away from him. Was Xander resilient, or just stupid?
Lightning doesn’t strike twice, and Xander’s journey to play for the NHL would prove to be difficult. Before he got to get anywhere on the ice, he was a glorified locker room attendant, basically. It would have taken a miracle to get any playing time. His first few games back for Boston University were difficult. Xander was desperate to get play time and there just wasn’t any chance for him to get it. He worked so hard to get where he was that he felt stuck. People kept telling him that it would happen soon. Well, soon would never be good enough for him. People were saying he wasn’t as good as he used to be. Which left Xander feeling like he was under a microscope at all times. Disillusioned with what he’d always thought to be a dream job, Xander did try to get back into the game, but it was never the same. He had his skills, but so did every other hockey player that committed to Boston University to pursue the same dream he had. By some miracle, Xander managed to last his senior year with a little playing time for the hockey team. He ended up graduating with a journalism degree, with a concentration in sports broadcasting. In addition to that, he would learn that while loved he the sport, being a professional athlete also meant you were apart of a business - so, as a great as he was, it didn’t stop him from not getting an entry-level contract from The Flames that he thought was guaranteed after he graduated college. No other team offered him a contract after learning about his progress with his injury and he felt like his dream to become a professional hockey player was over. And sure, his performance wasn’t the best but he had one bad season after his best one yet. So Xander was a little mad because he didn’t think he deserved to be denied a contract or worse, not picked up for a new team. And he decided that if he couldn’t play in the NHL, he didn’t want to play anywhere else. Playing for the AHL, ECHL, or anywhere else wouldn’t be good enough for him.
With no real idea of what he wanted to do now that he was not playing hockey, Xander returned to his hometown, though he never wanted to come back to Grand Forks, because he had a solid plan of being a hot shot hockey player. Half of him felt embarrassed that he came back to town with a reality check. Many of his friends who had stayed in town resented him for ghosting and being too self-involved with hockey that it took awhile for them to warm up to him again. And the other part felt like a failure, letting his family down and most importantly, himself as he worked hard to find something else that gave his life purpose. Feeling suffocated by the town, Xander decided that he needed to be away from it all and moved to Merrock, finding solace in one person who he knew wouldn’t make him feel like he was a giant disappointment. As he settled in the coastal town, he started working at Touchback as a barback, so he could make ends meet with the help of his cousin, Nari. Sleeping on her couch for a few weeks, he eventually moved out of Nari’s home over in the countryside and lived in a place that he paid for himself, near downtown.
For years, Xander was content with wiping glasses and stacking napkins while a game played on one of the flat screens, looking for a new start in his life. He was still feeling a little bitter about his hockey career ending so soon, but realized that he still had the privilege to showcase his love for the sport elsewhere, in another career. So when Merrock opened up their very own news station, Xander cut back on his hours at the sports bar and applied for an internship at The Station to become the town’s sports reporter, hoping to earn the position as he familiarized himself with what it took. During his internship, he got his first television experience calling play-by-plays for the football and basketball teams, gathered content, and produced for the evening news. Using his determination and hard work to get what he wanted, Xander finally got behind the anchor desk and became Merrock’s weekend sports reporter, using his college degree instead of just having it in his back pocket. And he did it all without stumbling over his words, reading everything from the teleprompter with clarity and precision.
And so Xander’s been back in town for around five years where he worked at Touchback as a barback, recently quitting to focus on being a full-time sports reporter. He’s hoping to be promoted from the weekend sports reporter position to being the daily sports reporter at The Station. As a sports reporter, Xander believes that every athlete, coach, and other personnel has a story worth capturing. His stutter only returning in fits and starts if he’s really stressed or emotional about something in his personal life. Recently, he moved out of his downtown apartment, signing a lease to rent a house by the coast that he had drove by so many times. The life Xander leads is nothing he thought it would turn out to be, but things did always have a way of working out for him.
