sorry to be salty in your inbox, ignore if you want. but europeans going “durr durr YOU elected trump” when i was 14, making it seem like 1 person is the sole cause of all US Bad, made me so mad. like, i get that nordic countries have better standards of living because of universal healthcare and gun control, but let’s not pretend the reason they have less racism isn’t because they wiped all poc out. they use the us as a scapegoat for all societal problems tbh and it gets annoying.
Okay first of all, you were 14 in 2016??? I'm so old and therefore I'm now designating myself your honorary Internet big sister lol.
But yeah, I'm pretty sick and tired of people celebrating Nordic (or Scandinavian because apparently there's a difference between those two terms lol) countries as paragons of virtue in every way when like, their entire country's population is like half of Ohio's so clearly it's a lot more difficult to govern the United States and its 50 states (+ territories) than it is to govern like, Denmark. It's also a matter of size too like the western United States is geographically huge; it takes about 5 hours to drive across Washington state and we aren't even the biggest state out here. Meanwhile, you can be in three different countries in that time in parts of Europe.
Some of what's wrong with America is because of American ethos and individualism or whatever but we need to stop pretending that any other country on earth comes close to being as large and heterogeneous as the US except maybe Brazil, which like, is worse in pretty much every way than the United States so really isn't a comparison. Also like, we voted out our fascist strongman and he's now languishing in Florida getting honorary black belts, Bolsonaro may very well get reelected and even if he doesn't, Brazil doesn't have a Joe Biden in the wings.
Also like, the USA is literally the most racially diverse country on earth!! Asian countries and African countries are much more racially and religiously homogeneous. For instance, Muslims make up almost 20% of the population in India and we never hear about anti-Muslim bigotry in India because the other 80% is all Hindu and silences a lot of the discussions. Meanwhile, the percentage of Black people in the US is less than 15% but racism is still a major topic of discussion here since in addition to Black people, there are Asians and Latinos and Native Americans and Jewish people, and even groups like the Irish and Italians who were previously othered when they first immigrated but are now white.
Americans of all races and origins have long formed coalitions with other groups unlike their own, and they worked together to bring about a better future for everybody, and it literally dismisses all their hard work over the centuries to ceaselessly whinge about how this 330 million strong country is unable to instantaneously do what some country a quarter of the size of Florida was able to do. Just for one example, the Black-Jewish alliance in the American South was key in bringing about Civil Rights in the 1960s and even in 2021, the modern version of the Black-Jewish alliance elected senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in Georgia, a literal bastion of the Confederacy. And that should be celebrated!!
The point is, America very much is a melting pot, and that makes it difficult to bring about national structural change but that doesn't mean it's not worth fighting for.

Central Government Supports Hong Kong To Develop Her Role As A Hub For The Chinese And International Arts And Cultural Exchange: Possible? From ‘Events’ To ‘Industries’ Approach?
There is a story that the tears of a businessman could become pearls, bank notes and other jewels. He kept on crying as his greed grew. Finally, his tears became dry and he was still weeping tearlessly. He turned blind.
People connect. We want to connect the world. My best art classmate is actually in Mexico. Cultural exchange is sharing and swapping traditions, thoughts and artistic expressions with someone coming from a different background.
Hong Kong is an international city in Asia and offers a complete list of all exotic states of matter. We are a melting pot of races and their ideas. My friends are from Europe, Middle East, Africa, India, Australia, Canada, America and Asia. The value of cultural ideas in Hong Kong lie in the using and sharing of them. They are never refrigerated. The United Kingdom had held Hong Kong as a colony since 1842, when it took over the area during the First Opium War. The return of sovereignty over the territory of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People’s Republic of China took place on 1st July 1997. Hong Kong has long been the great city in Asia that truly blends the profound aspects of eastern and western cultures. Here, Confucius and Plato, Romeo and Juliet and Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢), and Für Elise against Butterfly Lovers(梁祝協奏曲) all happily co-exist. Some apprehend that what will happen in the future is Chinese culture, being like an enormous oak tree, standing and overshadowing the Hong Kong cottage. I am a ‘the glass is half full’ optimist. China will be more and more open. She, at the moment, is an economic superpower. In order to be also a ‘cultural superpower’, China realizes she must endeavour to cause her cultures, arts, entertainments, thoughts and ways of living to gain respectable worldwide appeal and significant international popularity over the world. The challenge is Augean.
In 2021, Chinese Central Government’s  National 14th Five-Year Plan stipulates that the country will ‘support Hong Kong to develop herself into a hub for Chinese and international arts and culture exchange’. The document did not go on to explain this point. Perhaps, ‘brevity is the soul of wit’. The Plan left the government and people in Hong Kong with pieces to guess, pick up, de-construct and re-construct as to how to accomplish such a national mission. It is the style of the Central Government to be fundamental in saying things in one sentence and the others will elaborate such fundamentals into a whole book.
In Hong Kong, the official of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government Lu Xinning(盧新寧) described the above national cultural mission of Hong Kong by 3 supplemental points:
(1)      that in order not to fall behind, Hong Kong shall domestically create and export more good-quality local art and creative   works manifesting the competitive charm of the city;
(2)      that in order to affect the world, Hong Kong shall perpetuate the task of telling in her own creative modern ways the beautiful Chinese cultures and stories to Asia and the West; and
(3)      that in order to accomplish a creative society, the government, commercial sectors and people of Hong Kong shall work closely together to develop a bigger arts and cultural market both within China especially the Greater Bay Area and outside the country. We need more creative industries in Hong Kong.
The renowned art researcher in Hong Kong Helen So commented that despite the National Plan, the local administration’s vision of the city being a cultural hub remains confined to physical events and activities. The accomplishments cited often refer to government-supported museum exhibitions, performing art tours and art festivals etc. She said, “Hong Kong would benefit from aligning its strategy with the national vision and expanding its ambitions to encompass the digital and commercial spheres. Without a bold vision, a clear strategy and active leadership, Hong Kong’s status as a cultural hub is empty, remaining a buzzword rather than a concrete goal.” Miss So concluded that Hong Kong must move with the times and start turning from the ‘events-based’ to ‘industry-based’ thinking and strategy. At the moment, most art activities are funded by Government and they are not ‘high commercial value contents’. The art groups are often charitable organisations.
Among the cultural thoughts which have been handed down from generation to generation, love and peace occupy the most dominating position. Chinese cultural traditions also embrace love, peace and pursue harmony. A person without the knowledge and cultivation of culture is like a flower without leaves. The side benefit of making Hong Kong a hub for cultural exchange may be that the people in Hong Kong, often criticized as materialistic and coarse, can transform, not determined by status in society or by wealth, to possess the better qualities of a cultured individual such as reflection of the mind and soul upon themselves, other people and the world. As it can be seen from the recent social commotion in 2019, youngsters in Hong Kong are not able to respect and put themselves in someone else’s fear and distress.
Economically, opportunities created by arts and culture have taken on greater importance as economies, transiting from the traditional industrial model and work-based physical labour, to a new model in which creativity will turn into firstly, revenue-generating productivity and secondly, technological growth of the city. The success of international art fairs and auctions in Hong Kong is a very vivid example. The National Plan will hopefully drive Hong Kong this time to seriously export her art contents and develop her creative economy.
I think the future for Hong Kong is simple: if we want Hong Kong to prosper, we will need culture to water the city. If we are to preserve Hong Kong’s uniqueness, we must continue to preserve and create our own special cultures and styles to maintain Hong Kong’s sustainable identity. If we are disappointed to see our children not to emerge as a better person despite our expensive school education system, we must promote arts and culture to offer a promising cornucopia of delightful panacea for their spiritual ills!
Complacency and inertia are the 2 forces which are pulling Hong Kong down.

Bobst reflects on a year of ups and downs for the packaging industry
Tumblr media
Bobst’s financial performance is strong in 2021, with a big increase of order entries compared to 2020. Taking into account the impact of the Covid-19 lockdowns and the resulting 2020 decline, the net growth since 2019 is over 40%.
In terms of geography, North America, Southern Europe (France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece), Germany and Poland performed very well. Bobst also saw good results across the South American market. Although there is a slow-down in China, overall results from the country were still very positive. South East Asia remains a complex and fragmented region, but one with great opportunities for the future, Bobst said.
2021 however also created upheaval within the entire packaging industry. The shortage of skilled labor in some regions, on top of unprecedented price rises in paper, board and flexible substrates, has created unexpected challenges and uncertainties for many of the company’s clients.
Bobst Days – a showcase for the biggest virtual packaging industry event ever, with 28 unique webinars which have attracted 8,491 attendees – was one of the highlights of the year.
Bobst leading the folding carton and corrugated board
In 2021, the folding carton market continued with a steady growth driven by the pharma and food industry. Bobst noticed a growing demand for more automatized production lines with enhanced quality control solutions. It also observed a migration of some commercial printers entering packaging production.
The corrugated board industry had a record year driven by global eCommerce growth, which has now expanded into new sectors such as food delivery. Large converters, and many others, decided to invest heavily in new equipment or green fields to answer this new demand. Converters are looking at more productive production lines with more automation and more in-line machinery enhanced with quality control systems, Bobst said.
Bobst continued to lead the folding carton and corrugated industry segments with new machines and innovation, from printing to embellishment to cutting and folding-gluing. The Novafoil 106 is a versatile and cost-effective solution for premium cross and inline foiling, the market loves it. The Accuregister ‘new sheet to cut register’ system reduces setting times and feed-related stops, boosting productivity and delivering outstanding blank register quality.
The Expertfold 110 A3 version, which offers greater versatility and unrivalled time-saving benefits to packaging converters, had great market acceptance with units sold in Italy, India and UK.
In the corrugated board industry, the Masterline DRO was launched to answer the urgent requirements of eCommerce. The Speedpack was introduced in September.
Labels and flexible packaging
Labels saw solid growth with the company’s all-in-one solution combining flexo and digital printing systems. Within digital, inkjet is making significant inroads with the highest growth rate as it delivers high quality combined with high productivity and low operating costs.
However, the labels market remains a melting pot of different technologies, each of them best for specific applications. All converters are facing the rise in short runs and they all look for more automation, especially as manpower is more difficult to find. Substrate prices increased significantly, and some became more complex to source.
In flexible packaging, the entire market is facing the ‘plastic reinvention dilemma.’ Recyclability and food compatibility are high priority topics, with strong demand for new high barrier and mono-material solutions or even paper metalized solutions. There is a strong demand driven by eCommerce home deliveries and in-home prepared foods. The highest growth rates are in stand-up pouches, flow wraps, and single-serve packages. The industry is growing at a stable rate but cautious on how new regulations may impact plastic production.
In 2021, Bobst Digiflexo automation solutions accounted for over 40% of the deals signed, reflecting the digitalization and automation requirements for more flexible production lines. In July, Bobst acquired the remaining 49% of Mouvent, integrating the digital printing competence centre for Bobst.
The Master DM5 – first announced in 2020 – is ramping up, demonstrating the value of solutions integrating flexo and digital capabilities in modular All-in-One, All-in-Line solutions, Bobst said..
2021 saw another major milestone for Bobst with the opening of the Atlanta Label Competence Center, where it hosted many clients and achieved repeat sales of its new digital printing solutions.
In flexible packaging, the entire packaging industry is looking for a new ‘sustainable face.’ Bobst sees some folding carton and glass production moving towards plastic for a lower environmental and transportation impact. At the same time, the company is seeing some flexible packaging moving towards paper-based packaging. But the biggest trend is the move from multi-material packaging to mono-material solutions, although the waste collection and recycling capacities are not solved yet. Bioplastic material and recycled film usage needs to ramp up to be competitive.
Bobst said it is ready with mono-material solutions – from the right barrier level to printing to lamination. The company said that 2021 has been the breakthrough year for its oneBARRIER solutions, including an EVOH-free, topcoat-free transparent solution for full PE barrier, achieved using the Bobst Nova SX 550, the Expert K5 and the Vision D850. This delivers a high barrier mono-material full PE transparent solution as an alternative to metallized polyester film.
Sustainability solutions have been deployed internationally. Sparsh Industries was the first company in India to deploy the new environmentally friendly solution AluBond on a wide web machine. Polibak in Turkey was the first to remotely install a Bobst K5 metallizer.
In Q4 2021, Bobst acquired the assets of the Italian gravure press manufacturer Officine Meccaniche Giovanni Cerutti SpA and Cerutti Packaging Equipment SpA, including its service and some R&D capabilities, which is in line with its strategic goal of further consolidating its technology and market leadership in the global gravure printing market.
Looking ahead to 2022, digitalization will be the main driver for labels – converters will look for complete end-to-end digitalized solutions to optimize their production floor. All that can be digitalized, will be, enabling converters to deliver faster, with better quality and less waste, answering the growing demand for on-demand label production.
In flexible packaging, Bobst expects the oneBARRIER solution to be available for paper-based usage leading towards more sustainability. Bobst’s Extended Color Gamut printing solution – oneECG – will continue to make inroads into production sites, replacing ink mixing and related waste. “Overall, we strongly believe that plastic packaging, well produced and well recycled, has a future and we are ready with commercially available solutions,” Bobst said.

Students planning to go abroad to study generally have USA or European countries like UK, Germany and France on their minds. But Singapore, Dubai and Australia have emerged as great centres for learning for Indian students. The quality of education imparted at these places is excellent and also offer a very good cultural mix. Another advantage to study in Singapore for Indian students, and Dubai as well, is that they are close to home. It is less expensive to come back home for holidays and it also easier for your friends and family to visit. Let us see what these countries have to offer.
Dubai
A lot of Indian students have started exploring the option to study in Dubai. The proximity to India is one of the reasons why Dubai has emerged as one of the top choices for Indian students. The language is also another big advantage as you will find food and people from all over India residing in Dubai.
Also, you can get obtain degrees from western universities from their Dubai campuses for a fraction of the cost. It is a very safe to city to live in. You also have a lot of activities to do during your downtime. There is Atlantis Water Park, Jumeirah beach, water sports, sky diving among other things. You will get to learn about a culture that is very similar to our own, yet very different in many ways.
Dubai is close to many other Middle Eastern cities like Doha, Abu Dhabi, etc. where you can learn about the rich history and traditions of the region. Travelling and exploring places is one of the best ways to expand your horizons.
Singapore
Deciding to study in Singapore is a very good choice. It is one the best places to get an education in Asia. The country is a melting pot of people from all over the world. It allows you to experience the best of West and East.
The cost of education is minimal as compared to USA and European countries. As with Dubai, its distance from India is a big plus for going to Singapore. it is an extremely safe place to live in. There are no hassles to obtain Singapore study visa.

Language is not a barrier in this country as the medium of teaching is English. The country offers a wide range of business programs from top universities. Apart from business, the education in fields like fashion and architecture is also great. The only problem is that they have put a cap of 15% foreign students in their universities, so the classroom may not be as diverse as in Western countries. Log on to edifyadvice.com to get a comprehensive consultation regarding overseas education.
Tumblr media
Australia
Indian students have been flocking to Australia to get an education and for good reason. The education infrastructure is world class and the cost of living is much lesser as compared to USA and Europe.
Students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week to manage their finances, which reduces the burden on parents or the loan amount that you may need. Australia also provides work permit once you are done with your education which gives you a chance to stay back and look for jobs. If you feel that you may not be able to afford to go to Australia, then you can apply for one of numerous scholarships for Indian students to study in Australia. It is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.

Job 20:1-22:30, 2 Corinthians 1:1-11, Psalms 40:11-17, Proverbs 22:2-4
Today is the 26th day of August welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is a privilege and an honor and a joy, and an all-around good time to be here with you around the Global Campfire as we find our places and just relax and allow the Scriptures to speak into our lives. We are reading from the New Living Translation this week and working…working our way through the book of Job. Also, we concluded the book of first Corinthians yesterday in our reading and so today we will begin the letter, the second…the letter to the Corinthians known as second Corinthians. But first, Job 20 through 22.
Introduction to second Corinthians:
Alright. So, as we mentioned at the beginning of our time together today, when we get to the New Testament, which is where we are, we’ll be getting to some new territory. So, we read a letter to the Corinthians that we know as first Corinthians, and concluded that yesterday, which brings us to a letter known as second Corinthians. Even though it's probably at least Paul's third letter to the Corinthian church, because in first Corinthians a letter was referenced that we don't have. It's not preserved, it hasn’t been discovered, it doesn't seem to exist still. But there was another letter. And, so, this could be third Corinthians, but it's second Corinthians. And among biblical scholars the authenticity of this letter is…is pretty secure. Most scholars agree there is some…some disagreement about whether it's a complete letter or maybe it's a combination of more than one letter. Some scholars even think maybe that first letter that was referred to is contained in second Corinthians, but this is conjecture. I mean there are reasons for these thoughts, but it's not 100%. There’s no way to guarantee that any of these theories are correct. It's just…there’s a very, very big difference between the beginning, the first part of this letter and then the…the last half of the letter. So, some have thought, well maybe this is more than one letter. So, second Corinthians, what we’re about to read probably was written on Paul's third missionary journey and that would put it somewhere in the late 50s A.D. Again, just reminding us, the writings of Paul are the earliest Christian documents that we have, and they’re preserved in the New Testament, but there earlier. They were written before Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written. And, so, they’re earlier than that. But anyway, Paul had a son in the faith, known as Timothy, but he also the son of faith known as Titus and Titus had visited the Corinthians and then met up with Paul while he was traveling and that let Paul get feedback both how the church in Corinth was doing, but also the impact of the letter that he had written, the one that we just read. And that feedback from Titus prompted Paul to write the letter that we’re about to start reading. No let’s just remember that Corinth, it is a cosmopolitan Roman Empire city, very secular, very sensual, a lot of ideas, a lot of persuasions, very secular, rebellious in a lot of ways. I mean, basically what you would expect of any metropolitan area where a lot of people are, especially if they’re a lot of people from all over the place. You got a kind of melting pot of ideas. And, so, some of that rebellion, though, was finding its way into the church. Some of the world was seeping in and there’s plenty of division. Paul talks about the division in first Corinthians, and I mean he has to talk about it again because there's a small group of influential members in the church in Corinth that…just playin’ straight up church politics. Imagine that? I mean we think like 2000 years later, like that stuff goes on, but it certainly didn't happen in the early church, but it did. It has always been a part of the story and we’ll read about that some in this letter. These influential members wanted power and they questioned Paul's authority and the rules that he was putting down and whether or not he was really an apostle. And for that matter, even questions about what he taught, the gospel itself. So, that's kind of the backdrop here. That's what’s going on as Paul writes this letter. And, so, that's how we need to read it. And we’ll find out that it's an old letter that has pretty modern issues. I mean some things that are going…that were going on are going on now. It…it's different, the cultures different. But it's…it's the posture of heart, right? It’s the issues of our hearts that Paul talks about that are still with us until…until today. And, so, with that, we begin that second Corinthians chapter 1 verses 1 through 11.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for where we are at in the Scriptures. Each new day, each new season, each new month, so many different complexions, so many different angles, so many different stories, so many different people to get to know. And in each instance, we find humanity and we find You in the middle of it all. Even when in our humanness we are crying out in agony or in question or in uncertainty, as we see the book of Job You are with us. So come Holy Spirit and plant what we've read. And even as we get going in the letter to the Corinthians, second Corinthians we ask that You encourage and rebuke, comfort and correct so that we might walk the narrow path that leads to life. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:
Hi everybody it's Donna from California and it's August 20th. I just listened to the podcast and the prayers and heard…the last prayer request was from Julie from the UK. And Julie, I want you to know that I will be praying for you. I'm sure many others will be too. I heard…I just heard the cry of loneliness and anxiety and despair coming out. And the verse…the…a verse just kept coming to my mind I thought well, I've gotta call this in. So, this is Psalm 34 verse 18. The Lord is near to the broken hearted and saved…saves the crushed in spirit. I just want you to know that we are praying for you and most importantly the Lord is close to you. He is close to you in your…whatever it is you're going through, missing your family, having to move to a new…a new country. It's just a very difficult time all over the world with everything that's been going on. So many things. And Lord Jesus please, please rush to Julie's side. Please let her know that You are close to her and that You love her with a love that is so deep and so far, and so wide. Let her know that You are there and that she is Your beloved child. Lord Jesus, we thank You for…for coming to us in the…in these moments. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
Good morning DAB family this is Ashley from California and I just wanted to give you a little update. I reached out for prayer in May for my dad who had a stroke, and it was a mini one, but he was in recovery for that and then come July he had another series of strokes. I took him to the hospital and then they released him and then he had another series of strokes and then he was in the hospital for about two or three weeks and then in rehab and it's been an adventure to say the least. But I wanted to come on here and say thank you to all of you. You have blessed my heart; you have blessed my family by uplifting us in prayer and I just want to say thank you to all of you. You have been so good to us, and God has been so good to us by giving us the DAB and the community that comes along with it. So, DAB family I just want to thank you. And I am so grateful to Brian and Jill and your family for this ministry. And like Brian says, when we are able to get out of our own situation for a minute and lift others up, I feel like you're able to take some of that anxiety that you have about your own situation and give it to God, and it's worked out in a way that is honoring to Him. So, I love you DAB family. Have a great week.
Good morning DABbers this is my song that I sang on the first day of school and my grandma really wants me to sing it for you. So, here it is. [singing starts] when it feels like nothing's there, when it feels like nothing's there to protect you, you have the ore. Just start roaming the ore. Cause no matter how big the mountain __ you're always gonna make it through and I will too because I know this very well. I know that God is with me. Even when I'm stuck in the middle of the valley and trying to go down. But cheetahs and hyenas and maybe even bobcats are all around me. But then Jehovah the great lion comes, his mentality scares them away and are ready to show that what I can do is nothing without God because no matter where I am I've seen the prettiest valleys and shadows. Sometimes God can be dark to hide what the devils to trying to show you. And no matter of what I have in my hand I can always trust in God…
Hello, my DAB family it is Doctor John from Jordan NY this is the glaucoma surgery sequel and I'm titling this one miracle number two. I…it's just…it's just flat out unbelievable. One of the brothers was talking about feeling undeserving and…and I know the feeling. So, long story. I was having headaches and the headaches were really high eye pressures and it was causing swelling in the cornea and that was excruciatingly painful over the course of a week or so. The ophthalmologist put in a contact lens which helped to calm down the cornea and helped immensely in terms of the headaches, but the problems was the pressure. And what had happened is that when I went blind the tube had gotten stuck in the iris and gotten plugged. So, there was this plug of iris material in the tube and the tube was not working. It wasn't draining the way it was supposed to. So, I went back this Friday fully anticipating that the tube was still going to be plugged, I was going to need a second surgery to fix the plug. And she says your pressure is 11 and the tube is clear. God is so good. Your prayers have resulted in miracle number…miracle number two. There is no way that that cleared other than your prayers. I love you guys I'm running out of time.
Good morning DAB listeners I am Jen, and I am new to this community but I'm so thankful for it. It's such an encouragement. I love hearing the scriptures daily, particularly the context of them. It just helps encourage my faith so much. And I love hearing the call ins both for prayer requests and encouragements and praise reports. I am calling in to say thank you to both of those of you who call in and vulnerable…vulnerably express your request to this community. Those are sources of encouragement. And for those of you who respond by praying for individuals, those are sources of encouragement as well. So, thank you to everyone who is listening to the Holy Spirit inside of you, the breath of God as I've recently learned it to be called, that is always with us and can never be lost. So, I just pray that you're encouraged today where you’re at in your situation and know that the breath that is with you is the Holy Spirit inside of you and you're never alone. Have a great day.

Dr. Scott Rifkin: Another Kind of Love
Originally posted on Jmoreliving by Scott Rifkin, MD on Feb 01, 2021
Tumblr media
(Photo by Gaelle Marcel on Unsplash)
This month is our Love Issue. Never has this topic been more important. It is time to really understand what love is. On one level it is the intense way we care about our children and our parents. It is the caring and passion we feel for our spouse or lover. Those are important emotions, and we will celebrate them with this issue.
There is another kind of love. It is based in decency and morality. It is our love of humanity. Do we care about others or do we only care for those in our small circles? When we care about the immigrant, we are caring about humanity. When we care about the poor, we are caring about humanity. When we look into the soul and pain of someone else we are rising above the innate selfishness of humans and lifting ourselves to higher moral level.
I recently had a conversation with a very close friend and business partner. I have known him like a brother since I was a boy. I have deep love in my heart for him. The conversation was about immigrants and it troubled me.
My friend is a conservative. I asked him how he felt about Donald Trump now. Despite having voted for him he now admitted the former president was a disgrace. So, I doubled down and asked if he now regretted his votes. He did not. I couldn’t help myself and asked why not? He responded to tell me several reasons including his stand on immigration.
My friend insisted that he doesn’t hate illegal immigrants but that they can’t be allowed to be here against the law. I reminded him that our grandparents were all immigrants and he countered that they came according to the law. What he refused to acknowledge is that we have created laws that allow white folks from Europe to immigrate to the U.S. but deny brown-skinned folks from South America. There is essentially no way for these immigrants to come legally.
I posed to my friend one last question — when the MS St Louis carrying 937 German Jews approached the shores of the U.S. in 1939, was the law that refused their entry morally acceptable and should it have been enforced? At least 600 of the ship passengers would be murdered and the Nazis used this rejection of the Jews as an excuse for future murders. Essentially saying don’t blame us for their fate once you reject the Jewish refugees.
He stammered a bit and then fell back on “the law is the law.” I truly hope that was his pride speaking and not his heart. There are certain laws of humanity that supersede the laws of the state. The immigrants from South America want only what our grandparents wanted — economic opportunity, freedom from violence, and education for their children. We see it today as having been the inalienable right of our grandparents to come here but deny the same right to other human beings?
It is time to love our fellow man. It is time to find a path for the illegal immigrants already here in the U.S. It is time to find a way for the DACA kids who have never known another home to be made citizens. It is time to find a way for a reasonable number of immigrants to come to the U.S. Let’s create a system where they can apply from their home countries without having to travel a trail of tears and abuse to the border.
Our country can handle more immigrants. It always has. Our melting pot has worked for more than 200 years. Our population density is low. Our farms, worked by illegal immigrants, can feed many more. They commit half the crimes percentage wise of any other U.S. group. They do the jobs many don’t want. They mow our lawns, build our houses, and care for our elderly. Their children will be doctors and lawyers and teachers. Those not here yet will do the same. They will bring their culture, their food, their arts. They will be great Americans.
On Valentine’s Day, I will bring flowers to my wonderful wife of 37 years and my amazing mother soon to be 90 years old. I will call my married daughter and tell her I love her. Then I’ll pray for my friend and hope he can find love in his heart for the huddled masses yearning for the same as his grandparents not so very long ago.
With Great Love,
Scott Rifkin, MD, Publisher

The ETIAS Profile: 4 Non-Schengen Countries That Allow ETIAS Visa Waivers
The European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS for short, is a visa waiver that allows entrance to 26 countries across Europe. While this authorization will still grant access to European countries that are part of the Schengen agreement, there are a few countries that will be added to the ETIAS scheme by 2021.
The Schengen agreement was made so that nationals of these countries could cross borders for the trading of goods or migrating from their country to another without the hassle. It is important to note that not all EU members are part of this agreement, and not all Schengen countries are part of the EU.
So before heading on that cross country trip through Europe by 2021, you have to know which borders you’re allowed to cross with this visa waiver. Here are the 4 non-Schengen areas that the ETIAS visa waiver covers.
The 4 Non-Schengen Countries that Will Be Part of the ETIAS Scheme
  1. Croatia
Croatia is located in central Europe on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The nearest ETIAS countries around it are Hungary, which is in the northeast, and Montenegro to its southeast. Croatia is on its way to officially be part of the Schengen agreement, meeting all technical conditions to join these areas.
With its scenic ocean views and beautiful historical sites, this country may be familiar to fans of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, where the country’s capital and surrounding cities were used as one of its main settings, King’s Landing.
Quick Facts
Capital: Zagreb
Official Language: Croatian
Currency‎: Kuna (HKR)
Places to See in Croatia
Diocletian’s Palace, Split
Rector’s Palace, Dubrovnik
Plitvice Lakes, Zagreb
2. Romania
Romania is located near east-central Europe, with Hungary being the nearest Schengen country to it. It is a sovereign state and part of the European Union. And while it still isn’t part of the Schengen agreement, it is set to become a member, thus the ETIAS scheme.
This destination is less known to international tourists and is mostly visited by other European citizens. Interested travelers would know this as the country famous for the tales of Dracula, with Transylvania being part of its many regions. Bran Castle, situated atop a cliff, is most associated with this legend.
Quick Facts
Capital: Bucharest
Official Language: Romanian
Currency‎: Romanian leu
Places to See in Romania
Bran Castle, Transylvania
Clock Tower, Sighișoara
Corvin Castle, Hunedoara
3. Bulgaria
Located in Southeast Europe, Bulgaria has one neighboring Schengen country: Greece. It is also close to Romania, which is north to this country. Joining the EU in 2007, Bulgaria is expected to be part of the Schengen agreement soon.
This Balkan nation is a melting pot of cultures with Greek, Ottoman, Slavic, and Persian influences around the country. Bulgaria is also known for being the Land of Roses, with the town of Kazanlak producing 85 percent of the world’s rose oil. It is also very diverse in mountains and terrains.
Quick Facts
Capital: Sofia
Official Language: Bulgarian
Currency‎: Bulgarian lev
Places to See in Bulgaria
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia
Seven Rila Lakes, Rila Mountains
Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak
4. Cyprus
Being the third largest Mediterranean island, Cyprus lies 480 miles southeast of mainland Greece. This island had recently become a member of the EU in 2004, and will soon follow the Schengen Agreement by the time ETIAS is fully implemented.
Cyprus rarely meets other weather conditions other than sunny, shining an estimated 300 days per year. This makes it an ideal beach destination in the summer.
Quick Facts
Capital: Nicosia
Official Language: Greek, Turkish
Currency‎: Euro
Places to See in Cyprus
Tombs of the Kings, Chloraka
Nissi Beach, Ayia Napa
Cape Greco, Ayia Napa
Because these countries opt to be part of the ETIAS scheme, they will all soon be part of the Schengen agreement. So by 2021, you can very well put these 4 countries in your itinerary. The ETIAS countries will comprise of 26 countries, all of which you can visit for 90 days.

After launching a $36 million fund earlier this year to help support black female founders, Backstage Capital isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Today, the fund’s founder and managing partner Arlan Hamilton announced that it will launch an accelerator to further amplify and support the best companies led by underestimated founders.
The four cohorts will be located in Philadelphia, London, Los Angeles and a fourth city to be determined through a public vote.
“We decided on Los Angeles because the ecosystem is really prime for it,” Hamilton said onstage today at Disrupt SF at Moscone West. “There is just the most diverse group of founders and types of companies they’re building. There is a lot there to pull from.”
With London, Hamilton said she visited the city a few times and was blown away by the founders and the interesting challenges they face there.
“There is a lot of money and a lot of investors, but it reminds me of three years ago in Silicon Valley,” she said. “It’s a melting pot of a city and we can pull from different parts of Europe as a launching pad. And there are several groups of African founders who found their way in the ecosystem in London who are doing great things with great resources but are being overlooked.”
But it was Philadelphia that served as location inspiration.
When Philadelphia is thinking about what it means to become a tech city, it’s not about ‘how do we retrofit this Silicon Valley model, but more so how do we use technology to do what Philadelphia does best,” said Aniyia Williams of Tinsel and Black and Brown Founders, who was onstage with Hamilton.
Williams will spearhead the Philadelphia chapter of the accelerator to provide more resources for founders there.
“It’s our privilege to be helping out with the Backstage Accelerator. We’ve been thinking through an ecosystem of how to support founders,” Williams said. “Philadelphia has one of the highest poverty rates of American cities and one of the highest populations of poor black and Latinx people. So for us it’s about closing that wealth gap to address inequity in tech. There needs to be more active participation from everyone.”

Backstage Accelerator will be accepting applications throughout the rest of this month, and six companies will be chosen per cohort. The accelerator will invest $100K in each company in exchange for 5 percent equity.
Participants can look forward to a different kind of accelerator experience, Hamilton said, starting with the demo day model.
“Demo day to us seems a little like standardized testing,” she said. “It’s important to a lot of the accelerators, but we’re wondering what could be an alternative to a demo day? We’re just thinking about things through a different lense, and at the same time having very high standards like we always do.”
Hamilton said it took awhile for her to be convinced to launch an accelerator.
“We really do things that we feel we can dominate,” she said. “I just didn’t think we were ready for it; why would there need to be another accelerator?”
She said Backstage reached 100 companies this year and put from $25K to $100K in those companies, providing strong value.
“In most cases we are the first call our founders make — either for a good or bad reason,” Hamilton said. “We have the most impact without having to raise hundreds of millions of dollars, but it’s not happening fast enough. We don’t like to wait for other people to catch up to us, so it makes a lot of sense to us today [to launch an accelerator], and it was after very deep and strategic thought to get to this point.”
Christie Pitts, Backstage Capital investment partner and chief of staff, will head up the accelerator, which is one of the programs that came out of Backstage Studio.
“My purpose is changing the narrative in tech and who is allowed to be a successful tech founder,” Pitts told us after the Disrupt panel. “Being a successful entrepreneur is not a zero-sum game. You can have a successful company, and I can have a successful company. And we feel like there is an opportunity in this space for underestimated founders where they can learn how to fundraise.”

To help build out programming and work with the cohorts in the four locales, Backstage Capital will enlist the services of Wayne Sutton and Melinda Epler, co-founders of Change Catalyst, a firm that promotes the importance of creating inclusive tech ecosystems. Microsoft and MailChimp are also partners in the accelerator’s launch. Mark Levy, formerly the global director of people at Airbnb, will also contribute to the accelerator.
Hamilton remains steadfast about the importance of diversity and inclusion in tech.
“I just think that Microsoft and MailChimp are understanding that we’re now the cool kids,” Hamilton said. “It’s the right side of things to be talking about. And you can only talk so much before it’s time to act.”
Hamilton said that the firm’s $36 million fund it announced earlier this year will yield results by the end of the year. She also says we’ll see Backstage with a $100 million fund by the end of 2020.
“We’ll keep doing what feels right to us, and try to leave things a little better than where we found them — that’s always our goal,” she said. “The accelerator will allow us to continue with our growing deal flow. And maybe by 2021, there’s a chance we could be in 10 to 12 cities investing in 100 companies a year.”
