nine people you would like to get to know better
aah this is nice thank u @fullbrave i also haven't done one of these in ages. cheating a little with my tags since "getting to know you better" is a little redundant for some of you. just an excuse to do a little tag game, if you would like! @howdomaddie @ronsenburg @quotesandmiracles @lollipopocoaster @tarobytes @klapollo @priestpandora @maskdemasque
three ships:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
iswav still, don't worry. lysander and aymeric have only sort of superseded them for the moment. and claude and lorenz keep hijacking my brain whenever i pick up three hopes.
first ship ever: i have NO idea. i feel like as a kid i had more of a tendency to like...selfship?? klavier and apollo still feels like the first thing i really ""shipped"" but i was like. 19. so idk if that counts.
last song: listening to High Treason from the shadowbringers ost right now and i've basically been on xiv ost lockdown for like five months. anyway this one fucks. the way the minor arpeggios in the background transition through the key change at the end into the 'prelude' melody!!!!!!! over the course of writing all this though, civilizations came on. also a jam even if it's easy to meme on.
last movie: kasia and i watched the dnd movie on saturday!! it was a good time! predictable kinda but like. thoroughly enjoyable.
currently reading: babel.... i don't know if i'll make it through though. it's very irritating to read. it has footnotes which in fiction usually means fun times but they are just so pedantic, and this is kind of an unforgivable crime.
currently watching: uhh i'm struggling to get through link click season 2 but i think i'm probably..not going to. the thing i am watching that i'm most invested in rn is probably maddie's xiv streams for me, i am Very excited for the next dungeon and to see what comes after. ready for shb to eat me alive.
currently consuming: the last of my ~vintage earl grey~ tea which is one of the most interesting earl greys i've had. I didn't replenish my stock yesterday though, I think i'm taking a little break from it.
currently craving: ooh. i don't know. i wish i was still craving the cake that i decided to make and now HAVE to make because I bought buttermilk for it. it's gray and rainy today and i'm very content to spend it doing laundry and playing video games. not in a very Yearning mood i guess?

🌸🌿 ・After months of being busy with academics, I finally found some time to write the notes for PS4. It was quite hard to find a way to explain how the notes will be played on paper ><
Hopefully, the one that I wrote is easy to understand. Should you have any questions with regards to the notes, feel free to ask here or through youtube.

Museum of Love — Life of Mammals (Skint)
Tumblr media
youtube
Museum of Love pits clattering, disciplined, multi-tonal beats against a lush and florid vocal line, an odd, intoxicating mix which is something like what would happen if Bryan Ferry stepped up to the mic in Fela Kuti’s band or the Wild Beasts decided to do an album with Neu! The duo, two albums in, has found a volatile spot along the dance-krautrock-art-song continuum, in which Pat Mahoney, once the drummer for LCD Soundsystem, croons stylish, over-the-top melodramas while Dennis McNany constructs disciplined beats out of synthesizers, percussion and various organic instruments.
The two have been working together at least intermittently since LCD Soundsystem went on hiatus. They made one previous self-titled album in 2014, which at a cursory listen seems a bit dryer and more architectural than Life of Mammals. It is, comparatively, all bones and little flesh. It has the same intricate constructions of rhythmic sounds as here, but fewer sudden upsurges of melody, as if some glorious liquid were seeping up through the floorboards.
Case in point, the disc’s best song, “Army of Children,” which opens in a hushed chorus and a spray of acoustic guitar, its beat held to essentials, the chink of cymbal, the tamped-down thud of snare, the rumble of insurgent bass. And yet, the song has a sweep and a grandeur to it, down mostly to the singing, but helped along by silvery keyboards. It slouches majestically through louche and decadent soundscapes, voices, drums and bass richocheting off the walls in dubby reverb. It stirs to life in a massed chorus of “The next time we meet,” which repeats as Mahoney unspools vivid, hyperdramatic phrases. There’s nothing cold, nothing minimalist, nothing restrained about this cut.
Elsewhere the sounds are strapped down harder, as on the opener, “Your Nails Have Grown,” just a pulsing electronic beat with a sax weaving through it and some truly disturbing lyrics. (For instance, “I start to gaze at you a little while, was that the shadow of a smile or just the rictus?”) The lyrics are so horrific and delivered so straightforwardly that you start to wonder if there’s a joke in here. If death and decomposition can be funny, that is. Yet even here in a relatively contained, rigorous cut, a haunted outro of criss-crossing sax sounds puts a fluttering, dreaming pulse under the song.
The lyrics are quite good, whether considering the discomforts of moving (“Cluttered World”), female body image (“Ridiculous Body”) and a ceaseless round of touring (“Hotel at Home”). It is in this last track with its cascade of many-languaged female voices and boing-ing synth beat, that the band gets off one of its best lines about impermanence, “The record moves, the needle stays, this town wasn’t really yours anyway.” The record, indeed, continues to move for these indie veterans. Life of Mammals is an odd little triumph off in its own corner.

Weekend Picks: 2/21-2/23
Tumblr media
Big Head Todd and the Monsters
BY JORDAN MAINZER
There were no live picks for yesterday, but plenty for the weekend!
2/21: Objekt, Smartbar
Here’s what we wrote about Objekt’s Cocoon Crush when we named it our #6 album of 2018:
“An artist solidly known for his bold exploration of techno, Objekt now takes a plunge into a new kind of ethereal beauty on Cocoon Crush. A foray into ambient music, Objekt subverts a lot of what we have come to expect from him. The line between digital and analog is smeared. Tracks are ungrounded, punctuated still by percussion and synthesizers, but in patterns and textures that materialize in mysterious ways. And just as they appear, they stutter and morph in ways unexpected to the listener. The cold machinations of the dancefloor are still present; they are just stretched and masked in exciting and rewarding ways.”
Darwin and Flower Flood open.
2/21: Knuckle Puck, Beat Kitchen
We previewed Knuckle Puck’s set at Durty Nellie’s two years ago:
“Covering last year’s Riot Fest, I found Knuckle Puck the worst set of the festival, though I did remark that the band’s new, unreleased material had the crowd’s attention as much as their released material. As it turns out, the album versions of the songs are pretty good. Shapeshifter, released about a month later in October, was exemplary of what Knuckle Puck do best–write catchy songs with powerful melodies and hooks, enough to showcase the band’s more-than-capable instrumental prowess while avoiding the try-hard singing that plagues so many of today’s emo bands.”
Cleveland power poppers Heart Attack Man and Wilkes Barre hardcore band One Step Closer open.
Tumblr media

2/21: James McMurtry, Old Town School of Folk Music
We previewed James McMurtry’s show at FitzGerald’s two years ago:
“James McMurtry plays tonight as part of the 37th Annual American Music Festival at Fitzgerald’s, still touring strong off of Complicated Game (one of our favorite albums of 2015) like he was when it first came out. When we caught up with him last November, he said of new songs, 'I’ve jotted them down on my phone as I’ve gone along. That whole record was written on an iPhone3. Unfortunately, I dropped that phone, I don’t have the cool Notes app anymore.' Well, either he’s got a new phone or doesn’t need one, because late last year, he released 'State of the Union', a trademark jab at fascism and racism. It might not be as succinct as him telling us 'There never been a good Nazi a day on this earth dead or alive,' but at least there’s hope for more new material.”
2/21: Raphael Saadiq & Jamila Woods, Vic Theatre
Last year, Raphael Saadiq released his first album in 8 years (since the great Stone Rollin’). Jimmy Lee is named after, inspired by, and partially about his brother who died of heroin overdose after contracting HIV many years ago. As such, whether singing or inhabiting the character of his brother, Saadiq is at times uncharacteristically somber. He’s at the other end of a barrel of a gun on “Sinners Prayer”, reflecting on his wrongs, wondering whether it’s too late: “When a sinner is praying, God, will you hear it?” He wears a heavy burden on the funky, stomping “Something Keeps Calling Me”, the song’s wailing guitar solo in the bridge a mirror to his emotions. Saadiq calls out society, too, just as much as himself. “The people are mad,” he sings on “This World is Drunk”. The one-two punch of anti-mass incarceration jams “Rikers Island” and “Rikers Island Redux” presents the issue as simply as it should be put: “Too many n***as in Rikers Island / Why must it be / Set them free.” The former expresses its anger with upbeat piano and a simple refrain, the latter with spoken word over gentle guitar strums.
Best, though, are the reflections of grace that rise above the despair. On “I’m Feeling Love”, over a slower, more warbling funk, Saadiq, singing as his brother, is thankful for the little that he has. And on the skittering, rolling “Glory To The Veins”, he again distills his brother’s death to what matters: “I lost a brother to AIDS / Still, he laughed every day.” We’re lucky that as he gets older, reflecting on his life, and playing live reflecting on his career in Tony! Toni! Toné! and all the legendary artists like D’Angelo and Solange that he’s produced, Saadiq is willing to impart his wisdom.
Jamila Woods’ LEGACY! LEGACY! was one of our favorite albums of last year:
“Yes, Jamila Woods’ stunning LEGACY! LEGACY! is a tribute to important artists of color. What makes it stand out among other tributes, however, is the remarkable way Woods is able to present how each figure has guided her. Take opener 'BETTY', about funk artist Betty Davis, a woman married to a far more famous jazz trumpeter who gets his own song later on. Woods explores the gender and power dynamic in the relationship and uses it to make a personal and universal plea: 'Let me be, I’m trying to fly.' Fly, she does. On 'ZORA', over a hip hop beat, Woods succinctly declares in an all-time line, 'My weaponry is my energy', the drive and desire the catalyst in the noble goal to make her mark on the world as a black woman as opposed to while being a black woman. In various interviews surrounding the album release, Woods spoke about being inspired by black artists who perform and make art truly for themselves independent and often in spite of the race of the end consumers. 'Motherfuckers won’t shut up,' beings 'MUDDY', referencing Muddy Waters adoption of electric guitar because white audiences would talk over his sets; 'Shut up, motherfucker,' she sings inversely on 'MILES', 'I don’t take requests.' But the percussive, jazzy 'EARTHA' best encapsulates her aims of self-love and ultimate pride. 'I used to be afraid of myself,' Woods admits before stating, 'I don’t wanna compromise.' Ultimately, the refrain of, 'Who’s gonna share my love for me with me?' is the mindset by which Woods approaches relationships throughout the record and then life itself. You can be a part of it, but she comes first.”
DJ Duggz also opens.
2/21: The Wailers, SPACE
We previewed The Wailers’ set at Old Town School of Folk Music last year:
“Bob Marley might not be around, but his original band, containing many of the original members and their children, continues to play his songs. Seeing them in a venue as small as this is rare.”
Tonight at SPACE--an even smaller venue--they play two shows, an early and late one.
Tumblr media
Joe Henry
2/22: Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Vic Theatre
We previewed Big Head Todd & The Monsters’ show at the Vic Theatre two years ago:
“The Colorado jam band that saw mainstream success in the 90′s is touring fresh off of last year’s heavy New World Arisin’. In 2016, as Big Head Blues Club (the band’s project with a wide array of blues legends like Cedric Burnside and Charlie Musselwhite), they released Way Down Inside. But for the full potential of Big Head Todd and the Monsters, go a few years back and try 2014′s Black Beehive, a rawer, more diverse blues record than you’d expect from the band who recorded 'Bittersweet'. What’s for sure is that live, they’ll lean heavily on the new material while not forgoing their more beloved classics.”
They haven’t released a new album since then but have released a new song every month as part of a series. They should play some of these live, including gospel piano ballad “Hard Times Come No More” and the funky, rollicking “Train of Storms”.
Nashville band Los Colognes open.
2/22: Todd Barry, Thalia Hall
We previewed Todd Barry’s sets at SPACE two years ago:
“So, this isn’t exactly music, but deadpan comedian Todd Barry is performing 2 stand-up sets in one night at SPACE. Commemorating his 30 years of being a comedian, he’s going on another crowd work-only tour like the one documented in his 2014 special Todd Barry: The Crowd Work Tour. From watching that and his most recent Netflix special Spicy Honey, Barry’s dry observational humor is effortlessly tailored to specific crowds and cities, making this one of the must-see comedy events of the year.”
Even if tonight isn’t crowd work-only, he should do some of his specialty.
Chicago-based stand-up comic Chelsea Hood opens.
Tumblr media
Hot Snakes
2/22: Joe Henry, Old Town School of Folk Music
Since we last saw Joe Henry five years ago, he’s done quite a bit of production work and released two albums, 2017′s Thrum, and last year’s The Gospel According to Water. In between the two, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer; considering that, the latter takes on weight. It’s, first and foremost, raw, from the guitar playing on “Famine Walk” to the title track. But Gospel sports moments of beauty, too, as on the woodwind of “Mule” and rich vocal harmonies of “In Time For Tomorrow” and “The Fact of Love”.
Americana duo Birds of Chicago open.
Tumblr media
Pissed Jeans; Photo by Ebru Yildiz
2/22: Tim and Eric, Chicago Theatre
Who knows what Tim and Eric will bring to their Chicago stop of their Mandatory Attendance tour, other than their purported "brand new spoofs, goofs and insanity” and “special surprises.” The last time I saw them, Dr. Steve Brule showed up and almost married Jan Skylar!
2/22: Hot Snakes, Pissed Jeans, & HIDE, Empty Bottle
Music Frozen Dancing is upon us again, with suggested donations benefiting the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless! Go and donate!
We last listened to Hot Snakes from the medical tent at September’s Riot Fest. Since then, they’ve released the first two of four seasonal 7-inch singles leading up to the next LP: the burner “Checkmate” and wonderfully plodding laziness anthem “I Shall Be Free”. (The latter’s 7-inch has “A Place in the Sun” as an exclusive.)
Hot Snakes also play Sunday night at the Bottle with an opening set from post punk band Pink Avalanche.
Allentown hardcore band Pissed Jeans haven’t released anything since 2017′s Why Love Now, but they’re thankfully back to warm your pants before Hot Snakes. Maybe they’ll have some new songs to play?
Local industrial duo HIDE (artist Heather Gabel and percussionist Seth Sher) released their second album last year, the raw, disgusting Hell is Here. The drum programming and screaming is just as cringingly visceral as the recorded sounds of vomit hitting a toilet that end opening track “Chainsaw”.
Synth band Crash Course in Science, arty The Hecks, and local punk band Hitter also open.

Reviews 105: Naphta and The Shamans
Over the course of his two LPs 7th Expedition (on Transatlantyk) and the newly released Naphta and The Shamans (on Astigmatic Records), Pawel “Naphta” Klimczak has revealed himself as a master of evocative and otherworldly moods. At its core, his music marries creative and naturalistic drum programming with far-out sampling and exploratory live instrumentation (both from Naphta himself and the many musicians he works with). But where 7th Expedition focused on esoteric jazz and cosmic Afro-vibrations, Naphta and The Shamans instead winds its way through exotic krautrock and desert psychedelia. The latter album also sees a much expanded crew of noise makers joining Naphta for his mystical jams…the titular Shamans descending from spiritual solar realms to support the sonic quest with their expert musicianship. And the pitch perfect cover art by Zbiok Czajkowksi is a nice touch, purposely evoking heavy metal fantasy with its city of clouds and sentient eye’d pyramids backgrounding some sort of interstellar demon-druid.
Naphta and The Shamans - Naphta and The Shamans (Astigmatic Records, 2018) “Dim Daybreak” comes to life with the kind of ritualistic ambiance found in those communal Amon Düül albums or even Sunburned Hand of the Man. Shakers, bells, and faraway toms accompany murky bass and guitar noodling, with streaks of tremolo picked acoustic running through the mist (perhaps from Vojto Monteur?). Jaq Merner’s emotional and floating vocals introduce a grooved out bass guitar and drum stomp, mixing organic stoned funk with captivating hand percussion from Michał Szczepaniec. The vocals grow increasingly desperate alongside wisps of guitar and celestial electronics, the whole thing coming together like some long lost cut from Can’s “Ethnological Forgery” series. “Endurance” is the first of three pieces on the A-side to feature additional production from Marcin Mrówka and erupts immediately into swaying groove intoxication, with deep kick and hand drums from Kasia Konachowicz alongside guitars baked in the desert sun. Slow motion chords and bending leads sit atop the vaguely tropical drum flow, with pillowy bass guitar tones like a psychedelic cloud helping the jam lock in. As the song progresses, the bass line opens up and starts an exploratory walk while hypno-shakers and jazz house cymbals join the rhythm, forming a solid basis for heady guitar riffs that cycle through the mind and mystical leads that sparkle like light on moving water. There are even several false endings…everything drifting away like vapor only to slam back into the mesmerizing acid rock, each return more far-out than the last.
The other two cuts featuring Marcin Mrówka are “Thom’s Beach” and “Crystal Lizard,” the first of which sees electro-toms cycling ear-to-ear over rattling tambourines, bells, and atonal guitar scratches. A thudding four-four joins the panoramic tom cascade and the guitars work their way towards something resembling a riff, albeit with plenty of atonal jazz detours. Eventually it all comes together for a skittering uptempo fusion jam intercut with sunshine guitar interludes…moments of brilliant African leaning folk in between the jaunty and dissonant grooves. “Crystal Lizard” on the other hand, evokes early Tortoise as a nice textured bassline supports Doug McCombs-style spaghetti western/surf rock/Afro leads and a dusty shuffling rhythm. There are also loungier sections with Jeff Parker-style jazz chords and twinkling idiophone melodics…mellow and smooth, and at some point it all breaks down into shambling free rock before building back up towards a sky seeking jam out. The remaining A-side cut is “Jungle of Doom,” which drops us right into a psychedelic ceremony, first with galactic echo noise and ritualistic percussion, then with shakers and kick keeping time underneath thunderous overdriven prog bass (think Jannick Top). The guitars move between shimmering riff cycles and delicate harmonics, imbuing things with a touch of blissed out solar glory and as the bass guitar grows ever meaner, anthemic claps cast sunshine spells and desert rock leads soar towards the celestial sphere.

A highlight of the whole show comes deep in the B-side with “Explorer’s Judgement.” A storming drum and bass guitar groove is smothered in murky fog, eventually rising to the light alongside sweltering heatwave synths (Jan Stulin?) that waver and glow before fading into mist. Grzegorz Staniek’s performance on live kit here is jaw dropping, locking in with some more Magmoid basslines and moving deftly between gliding booty music and epic and portentous tom-tom fills. Flutey tones hover in the air, ghostly and otherworldly, and accompany wailing guitar solos over the funked out sci-fi jam before a spellbinding rhythm section work out ends things, with Kuba Kutera’s surf riffs dotting the horizon like lysergic rainbows. Side opener “Frozen Paths” is similarly epic, but in a different way. Here harmonious guitar arpeggiations ride over a slow motion four-four beat lead by panning toms and jazzy snare work. But the rhythm quickly morphs into some sort of future jazz breakbeat and is overlaid by bright guitar notes and sparkling harmonics drifting with cut-up synth fx. Sometimes the drums move back towards the understated four to the floor ritualism, but regardless of the beat flow, the sunset hued guitars never relent in their beautiful chordscapes. And as the song progresses, we lock into a particularly spectacular post-rock climax featuring waves and waves of guitar bliss before fading away on a downbeat jazz funk outro…the rhythms taking on a body moving swing while cool e-pianos drop twilight riffs.
“Stalking Knights” is like some sort of uptempo shake charmer bass music, with earth shaking subsonic squalls and a deliriously propulsive yet off-kilter groove. Faraway eastern melodies played on glorious string synths fly through the air while echo riffs percolate and Paweł Stachowiak’s distorto-bass rains down from a burning sky. And at some point, things chill out as the guitars weave soft webs amidst the ceremonial drum humidity, with pads passing through like warm currents of air. “Firelink Shrine” is one of two cuts here featuring Bartosz Kruczyński and is another slice of swaying post-rock romance. Strangely effected guitar sound like harps and hold down a barely-there progression over cinematic and galloping drums. There are moments where classic progsynth leads rise through the shambling drum maelstrom, while dubwise echoes float alongside Michał Szczepaniec’s percussion. We even get rattling tribal interludes led by metallic shakers and atonal clacks, and in general the whole mix is a hyperactive adventure that refuses to sit still. Finally, we come to gorgeous closer “Pale Dusk”, featuring Bartosz again on synthesizer. Dreamtime ambiance swirls and synthetic static sounds like rainsticks, while wandering bass guitar and subaqueous drones work their way towards glistening oceanic wonder. Bubbling arps reveal themselves and bathe the mix in shades of aquamarine, sitting alongside another deeply moving vocal performance from Jaq. And as melancholic organs join the underwater atmospherics, we find ourselves surrounded by a perfect sundown incantation.

Note
Kasia fine line is my FAVORITE song and I can’t stop think about the progression “we’ll be fine line” to “we’ll be alright” in terms of fan projects. I really really want something fucking cool happening. Maybe the GA raising up “WE’LL BE ALRIGHT” prints when he sings it for the first time (and the melody starts amping up) ? We should start planning things now so we can spread the information and everyone could be on it when tour starts. LET’S BRAINSTORM!!!!!!
omg i'm sorry i missed this earlier among the other asks!!!! YES fine line the song really is that bitch 🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧 and i LOVE the idea although i'm not the best person around to like. take the lead on this. but this is honestly WHOLESOME, sth like this would make him feel so nice omg 😭💖

ALESSANDRO CATTELAN, DOMENICO PROCACCI
ALESSANDRO CATTELAN, EDOARDO LEO

Eurovision 2017: Pre-Show
5. Belgium: Blanche - “City Lights” Semifinal 1 - #05
youtube
Guys, I’m still in slight shock that Belgium is one of the best countries in Eurovision for this decade. (Having grown up with 00s Eurovision, an era in which Belgium was consistently one of the WORST) I mean, after “RAP-AP-PAP” and “What’s the presuuuuuuure???”, they already showed their persistent goodness, but “City Lights” is pretty much the icing on the cake. I don’t really want to insult your intelligence by explaining Blanche’s self-evident greatness to you, but ... fine! I was a bit apprehensive at first, I’ll have to admit. I was unfamiliar with Blanche (Flemings don’t dabble with Walloon tv and vice versa) and was kind of sceptical about her exceptionally low singing timbre. “City Lights” puts it to great use though, and with that obstacle out of the way, I was ready to obsess over her participation ^__^
There have been persistent rumours that “City Lights” was written in an imaginary language (a la urban trad) and then translated into English lol. The way i’ve understood it however, is that it was written phonetically :o The song was written with certain phonemes in mind and words which fitted these noises were folded in after the basic melody had been composed. It’s a quite a neat trick imo and explains why the lyrics are so poetic and fluent? With lots of repetition and assonance, “City Lights” has an uncanny flow to it, which makes it fresh and addictive. ^__^ An added bonus to this is Blanche herself, who is ADORABLE. She has that Robertoad-like quality of singing in ~Franglais~ or heavily be-accented English, which is one of my fave things Eurovision can offer. Let’s all sing along:
~aw awone in da daignrzoen~ ~ar yoo weedy doo dake ma hend~ ~aw awone in da fleime ov doet~ ~ar wee gowin do looz eet aw~   ~awkud neva liv - yoo in da seedy loids~ ~awkud neva bit - da stome in ya ayz~ ~da stome in ya brite ayz~
OF COURSE, *sigh*, haters are already waiting around the corner, especially since all the live concert stuff has been coming out. “BAD VOICE, NO FINAL. KASIA <3”. Shut the fuck UP. Truly pathetic are the people who feel like bullying a 17 year old online because they recognize the threat she poses to their own Basic Bitch faves (see: the people who are trying to make “Gabbani Hate” happen) STOP. BREATHING. NOW!!!
Qualification Odds: Certain
There are people out there who genuinely believe Blanche won’t advance, just because she failed to sing a handful of low notes on the first two occasions she performed her song for a live audience. Those people are deluded, mate. All it takes to advance is a top 10 placement, and Blanche will achieve this without a hitch. “City Lights” is going to WIN the jury vote for the first semfinal and it will be top 4 with the televoters at the very least.   I do not believe Belgium are going to win Eurovision though. “City Lights” is indeed too dark for that purpose; furthermore, I expect Blanche to be supernervous (She is a shy 17 year old, after all) and nerves ALWAYS undermine any performance. But... surely, a top five placement must be viable, right? RIGHT?? Projected placement: 2nd-6th
