National Pink Day

Some may say that pink is for girls and blue is for boys, but both the history of the color pink and how it is perceived today are much more complex and varied than that. Pink, which is celebrated today, is a pale color that falls somewhere between red and bluish-red, usually somewhere between red and magenta. Some shades, like the color salmon, are even orangish. The color was referenced in literature in ancient times, but its name dates to the seventeenth century when it was named for a flower that has the name.

The perception of pink in society has changed over the years. It has long been associated with femininity, and at times has been considered kitsch, erotic, sophisticated, or transgressive. It has also been associated with sweetness, tenderness, charm, sensitivity, childhood, and romance. When paired with white it has signified chastity and innocence, and when coupled with black it has conveyed eroticism and seduction.

During the Middle Ages, pink was used primarily in women’s fashion and in religious art, while during the Renaissance, it was used mainly for flesh color in paintings. Its rise in popularity in the West took place in the mid-eighteenth century. During that time, men and women wore faint, powdery pieces of pink clothing as a status symbol of luxury and class. Both male and female infants and children were dressed in the color—it was often more associated with males because it was seen as a lighter shade of red, which was a color viewed as masculine. Boys continued to wear pink well into the nineteenth century, including pink ribbons and decorations. Eighteenth-century paintings gave contrasting meanings of pink. Some depicted the color as being associated with childhood, innocence, or tenderness, while others showed it as a color of seduction.

In the mid-nineteenth century, pink shifted away from masculinity and was viewed as being delicate. One reason for this was that men started wearing darker colors, and women consequently began wearing and being associated with brighter, pastel colors. Eroticism began being associated with pink during this century as well because the color had a quality similar to nakedness. Lingerie began appearing in pink, and art and literature began referencing the color’s sexual quality, particularly the color’s relation to the female body.

The color had long been related to the higher classes of society, but during the twentieth century, there was a status shift that moved it from luxury to the working-class. This was on account of the proliferation of cheap dyes that allowed the creation of garish takes on the color. The hues became brighter and bolder, and the dyes didn’t easily fade. It was at this time pink entered what is viewed as the vulgar, being associated with prostitutes. But the connotation of luxury was not fully removed from the color. For example, during the first decades of the century, Paul Poiret, a French couturier, made exquisite dresses in shades of pink.

In the 1950s, the color became strongly associated with femininity, largely on account of Postwar branding and marketing. This is the era when pink became associated with girls and blue became associated with boys. A few happenings during the decade helped to push pink further into this direction. Mamie Eisenhower, the wife of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, wore a pink dress for her inaugural gown in 1953, and Audrey Hepburn’s 1957 film Funny Face featured many women wearing pink dresses. The color was often still seen as being frivolous at the time, which reflected a less-than-equal view of women that persisted during these pre-women’s liberation years.

When Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe began wearing it in the early 1960s, it once again was viewed as being luxurious. It was adopted by punk, pop, and hip-hop culture in the following decades. Pink triangles became a symbol of gay activism in the 1970s when they were claimed by gay activists and removed from their dreadful past when they were used by Nazis to identify homosexuals in concentration camps. In general, the color pink is now associated with the LGBTQ community.

In recent years, the color has also been used by women in the West as a symbol of feminist power and protest, where sexual, reproductive, and social rights are addressed. Pink pussyhats were worn at the 2017 Women’s March in Washington, D.C., on the day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Similarly, Code Pink is a women’s activist group that opposes war and globalization. The pink of the twenty-first century is both pretty and powerful, both feminine and feminist. Men in the West have even been embracing the color more in recent years. Still, the color is generally more accepted n the East. For example, in India, pink clothes, adornments, and turbans are commonly worn by both sexes.

The color is associated with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, during which Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day takes place. A pink ribbon is the symbol of breast cancer awareness. Other holidays such as Pink Cadillac Day and Pink Flamingo Day—which happens to take place today—celebrate with the color.

Pink can be seen almost everywhere you look. It is used in idioms and phrases such as “give a pink slip” and “tickled pink”; flowers bloom bearing its color; many foods and drinks sparkle with it; clothes and makeup are shaded with its hue; and even the rising and setting of the sun greet us and wave to us with shades of pink. No matter where pink is found, we celebrate it today!

How to Observe

Here are some ideas on how to spend the day:

Wear some pink clothes, a pink hat, or some pink shoes.

Buy something that is pink.

Wear pink lipstick or blush, or dye your hair pink.

Eat some pink colored food, such as watermelon,  peeps, rhubarb, salmon, shrimp, grapefruit, ham, or cotton candy.

Drink some pink colored beverages such as a strawberry shake or pink lemonade. Some cocktail options include the Pink Lady and the Pink Squirrel.

Listen to a song  or watch a film with “pink” in the title.

Celebrate Pink Flamingo Day, which also takes place today.

Have a party and incorporate as many pink things as possible, including pink decorations, food, and clothes.

Plant, pick, or buy some pink flowers, such as roses, hibiscuses, tulips, peonies, or hyacinths.

Look for a pinkish light from the sun early in the morning or in the evening before it goes down.

Read a book about the color pink, such as Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color by Valerie Steele.

It all started with the idea to create a special way of celebrating the birthday of Carl Rittner, who was the founder of the Rittner School of Floral Design in Boston back in 1947. As a pioneer in floral art education, Rittner has shared his wealth of knowledge in the floral industry and had a marked impact on thousands of students from all throughout the world.

Some people don’t realize that National Floral Design Day was officially proclaimed by the Governor of Massachusetts. William F. Weld, in 1995. Since that time, floral design has been celebrated on this day each year.

History lesson aside, today is an excuse to go wild about flowers and let that inner creativity spark. There are so many things that can be done with flowers – the sky really is the limit. Mellanfjärden, Sweden (No. 1)

Mellanfjärden is a small town in Jättendal parish, Nordanstig municipality.

The resort has a fishing port at the bay of the same name (Middle Bay) of the Bothnian Sea.

Just southeast in the bay is Notholmen Nature Reserve.

Mellanfjärden, Sweden (No. 2)

Notholmen is a nature reserve in Nordanstig municipality, Hälsingland, Sweden.

The reserve is located outside Mellanfjärden's fishing village,about 6 km southeast of Jättendal. It is 45 ha large and was formed in 1978. The area consists of an island with surrounding waters.

The forest land on the island consists mainly of pine and spruce, with deciduous trees along the beaches. The soil is block rich and contains a large amount of dead wood in the form of dry cows and spruce flames. Along the island's coast there are rocky outcrops, shingle fields and sandy beaches. On the island grows herb mushrooms and pine wort. In bird life, fish maiden, herons and blacknessare noticed.

On the island there is a small burial ground with traces from the Iron Age.

International Rock Day

The Rock or stone is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of one or more minerals or mineraloids. For example, the common rock granite is a combination of the quartz, feldspar and biotite minerals. The Earth’s outer solid layer, the lithosphere, is made of rock. Rocks have been used by mankind throughout history. From the Stone Age, rocks have been used for tools. The minerals and metals found in rocks have been essential to human civilization.

International Rock Day has been created so that people all around the world can learn more about rocks. It’s not about rock and roll music; it’s all about the stone variety! After all, rocks play a big role in the environment, and they have been used by humans for many purposes over the years.

Three major groups of rocks are defined: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The scientific study of rocks is called petrology, which is an essential component of geology. At a granular level, rocks are composed of grains of minerals, which, in turn, are homogeneous solids formed from a chemical compound that is arranged in an orderly manner.

The aggregate minerals forming the rock are held together by chemical bonds. The types and abundance of minerals in a rock are determined by the manner in which the rock was formed. Many rocks contain silica (SiO2); a compound of silicon and oxygen that forms 74.3% of the Earth’s crust. This material forms crystals with other compounds in the rock. History of International Rock Day

International Rock Day is a day for celebrating this substance, which has been critical to the survival of mankind. Throughout history, rocks have been used. Since the Stone Age, rocks have been important for use as weapons and tools. The metals and minerals that have been found in rocks are critical to human civilization.

Rocks are geologically classified according to characteristics such as mineral and chemical composition, permeability, the texture of the constituent particles, and particle size. These physical properties are the end result of the processes that formed the rocks. Over the course of time, rocks can transform from one type into another, as described by the geological model called the rock cycle.

These events produce three general classes of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The three classes of rocks are subdivided into many groups. However, there are no hard and fast boundaries between allied rocks. By increase or decrease in the proportions of their constituent minerals they pass by every gradation into one another, the distinctive structures also of one kind of rock may often be traced gradually merging into those of another.

Hence the definitions adopted in establishing rock nomenclature merely correspond to more or less arbitrary selected points in a continuously graduated series.

Pink Day

Bullying is a growing problem in the world today and, every year, people hear of more and more incidents coming up regarding bullying in schools everywhere. And, although it is certainly a problem within schools, bullying doesn’t stop there. It extends to the world outside of school and even into the virtual world of the internet, where young people have created a bit of a world of their own.

Bullying is unpredictable and it doesn’t tend to follow any kind of rhyme or reason. It is merely the exertion of power over those who are weaker or who stand out as unusual. National Pink Day is a day dedicated to beating the bullies and breaking the cycle that creates and perpetuates this damaging behavior inside and outside of schools.

History of National Pink Day

National Pink Day (also sometimes called Pink Shirt Day) was established in 2007 in Nova Scotia, Canada. It happened after a pair of students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, saw one of their fellow students at Central Kings Rural High School being bullied for no other reason than that student was wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. Because of the association of pink with feminine things, this 9th grade boy was harassed for choosing to wear the color. But his two classmates weren’t going to let the bullies win.

In a stroke of brilliance, these two got together and decided to show support for the student and take a stand against bullying by getting everyone at their school to wear a pink shirt the next day. In fact, the two boys were so committed that they went to a discount store and bought a bunch of pink shirts to pass out for anyone who didn’t already have one. Pink Shirt Day was created to stomp out all bullying and spread understanding, and it’s a concept spreading throughout the world.

What started in a small corner of Canada has become something of a world event. The day has also been associated with Anti-Bullying day, another day when the idea is to stand up for others and wear pink. While the United Nations has made a declaration that this should happen on May 4, people in many countries still celebrate in February. But, that just means that there can be two different opportunities to make a difference and stand against bullying!

Early 20th Century Pink is used for baby boys more than girls

While in the future, boys might get teased for wearing pink, during the 1900s-1930s, it is considered completely appropriate for a baby boy to wear pink and for a girl to wear blue. It isn’t until later in the century that this will flip.

2007 First National Pink Day (Pink Shirt Day) begins

Two students take a stand against bullying against a student in 9th grade in Nova Scotia, Canada who was teased for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. They respond by buying dozens of pink shirts and handing them out for everyone to wear the next day.

2009 National Pink Day is celebrated in New Zealand

As word gets out, National Pink Day begins gaining traction and makes its way to the southern hemisphere. Other countries all over the world quickly follow suit.

2012 United Nations declares official Anti-Bullying Day

Although the date isn’t the same as the original Pink Day, the heart of the matter certainly aligns. Instead of February, the UN declares May 4th as an International Anti-Bullying Day.

2020 National Pink Day passes the $2.5 million mark in donations

Keeping in line with their origins of anti-bullying efforts, National Pink Day started raising money in 2008. It continues to support the efforts that have helped more than 59,000 youth and children, and will keep on going!

How to Celebrate National Pink Day

Getting on board and connected on this day is super easy and it all starts with wearing pink! Here are some other ideas for ways to celebrate this important day:

Wear Something Pink

Start the day by picking out a favorite pink garment and putting it on, especially for those who are male-bodied persons. Whether it’s just a pink t-shirt, a pink polo shirt, or an entire zoot suit made completely in pink–wear it! Get out there and take a stand against bigotry wherever it is found by making sure the offenders know that their calls will not go unanswered.

Teach Kids About Bullying

The more educated and informed kids (and parents!) are about bullying, the better equipped they will be to respond and to stand up, whether for themselves or someone else who is being picked on. Several organizations have been created that provide resources to help enlighten and educate families about bullying. Some of these organization include:

STOMP Out Bullying. Standing up against hate, racism and discrimination, this influential organziation has a help line for kids and teens, resources for parents and kids, options for donating, and ways to buy wearable merchandise to support the cause. stompoutbullying.org

National Association of People Against Bullying (NAPAB). This group provides personal advocacy and support for those who have experienced problems with bullying. They also offer education for students, parents and educators, as well as an anti-bullying club that meets across the nation (called Cool 2B Kind). www.napab.org

Kind Campaign. Bringing awareness and healing for those affected by girl-against-girl bullying, as well as working to stop bullying. It’s a global movement that has made a documentary as well as offering educational curriculums and in-school assemblies. Stop Bullying. This is a combined effort between US government organizations including the education department, justice department and health and human services department. Help Out in a Bullying Situation

This isn’t just for National Pink Day, but is a life lesson for every day. Those who happen to see or witness someone getting bullied or harassed should be sure to walk up to them and help them out. Don’t let them believe that they are alone in the world. National Pink Day is a day to stand up against the injustice of harassment and bullying, especially against minorities and those of the LGBTQ community.

Those who have ever been bullied in the past know how important it can be to have someone stand up and try to offer support. On National Pink Day, it’s possible to stand up for everyone with a simple wardrobe choice.

Spread the Word About National Pink Day

Since National Pink Day is still a fairly recent occurrence, and it affects kids who might not know about it yet, this is a great day to tell everyone about these anti-bullying efforts. Tell friends about National Pink Day in advance, and then make plans for what to wear and how to honor the day. Take a selfie or a photo of friends wearing pink and share it on various social media platforms to get the word out to everyone.

Throw a National Pink Day Party

School teachers and parents can show their support by allowing students to have a party in celebration of National Pink Day. This is an ideal day to get everyone involved in working toward eliminating the struggles faced by so many kids today. Have everyone wear a pink shirt in support of the day, decorate the party room in pink balloons and streamers, and even serve pink colored foods.

A great activity would be to watch a documentary or video put out by some of the anti-bullying resources listed above. Or have the kids create some unique artwork by using art supplies that are exclusively pink, then put them on display in a cool anti-bullying art show that everyone can enjoy.

Mellanfjärden, Sweden (No. 3)

Hälsingland, sometimes referred to as Helsingia in English, is a historical province or landskap in central Sweden. It borders Gästrikland, Dalarna, Härjedalen, Medelpad and the Gulf of Bothnia. It is part of the land of Norrland.

The earliest mention of the people of Hälsingland may be in the Old English poem Widsith, from the 9th or 10th century, where a people called the Hælsings are referred to. The first definite mention of the people is made by Adam of Bremen around 1070, in reference to the leidang shipping fleet.

In the medieval age, the "Helsings" were the Swedish speaking inhabitants of the entire coastal region north of Uppland, a rather imprecise denomination. In the early provincial law of Uppland, the border between northern Uppland and Hälsingland was the Ödmården forest.

In the 13th century a large number of people emigrated from Hälsingland to the southern coasts of Finland, then called Österland. They named places after Hälsingland, most notably the river Helsingeå and its first rapids Helsingfors. In 1550 the latter gave name to a new town founded next to it by King Gustav Vasa. In 1812 the city of Helsinki became capital of Finland.

The oldest city in Hälsingland is Hudiksvall, chartered in 1582. After that, Söderhamn was chartered in 1620. In 1942 Hälsingland was granted its third city, Bollnäs, which was to become the last city (in Hälsingland) as city status in Sweden was abolished in 1971.

The town of Hudiksvall, one of the oldest in Norrland, was ransacked by Russian troops in 1721. Hälsinge Regiment was the provincial regiment.

Take a Walk Outdoors Day

There are numerous benefits to taking walks, and doing so outside is much more fun than walking on a treadmill. Walking outside also gives you vitamin D, which 75 percent of adults don't get enough of. Taking walks can brighten your mood, as chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine are released during and after walks. Walking can lessen depression, and it is more effective in doing so if you walk outside than inside. Walking can also benefit the brain by helping new brain cells to grow, which can fight memory loss and dementia. Walking is beneficial for the heart: it can lower your blood pressure, and can lower your risk of getting a heart attack. It can also lessen your chances of getting lung cancer, help you burn fat, strengthen your bones, and keep your skin healthy by helping your body to produce more collagen.

How to Observe

Celebrate the day by taking a walk outside. Take a walk with family or friends, or spend some quiet time alone. Take a nice leisurely stroll, or power walk at a brisk speed. Walk in your neighborhood, or take a hike in a wooded area or state park. Above all, make sure you get outside and get some exercise. Your body and mind will thank you.

National Floral Design Day is observed on February 28 of every year. Everyone loves flowers, and there are a lot of things that can be done using flowers. Floral Design is a  creative and distinctive art form; National Floral Design Day is dedicated to this special art form. This unique Floral design art form is a very important art form for thousands of years; it may be seen in a decorating work, drawing or painting, bridal bouquet, in a textile, or a floral or garden arrangement.
