I’ve inadvertently read two novels back-to-back that both feature mer-people, although I quickly discovered that they shared so much more. The first is The Pisces by Melissa Broder which I followed with The Seas by Samantha Hunt. Broder’s novel is about a woman named Lucy who leaves her current home in Arizona to spend the summer at her sister’s in California, the house being one stretch of sand away from the ocean. One night she walks across the beach to the rocks in the surf and has an encounter with Theo, believing him to be a young surfer. They meet again and again, and commence a sexual relationship where she soon discovers that he is a merman. In Hunt’s much slimmer volume a nineteen year old girl living in a small town on the north eastern coast falls in love with a man fourteen years her senior who has just returned from the Iraq war. She lives with her mother and grandfather, as her father had walked out on them more than a decade before, but not after leading her to believe she is a mermaid.

The similarities between the books are many, beginning with the deceptive titular subjects. In Broder’s work it is easy to assume the Pisces in question is the merman, but it is actually Lucy who self-identifies as the Pisces. She is obsessed with astrology and visits psychic after psychic waiting for one to tell her exactly what she wants to hear. The girl in The Seas is also interested in astrology and is enchanted to learn that she shares the same zodiac sign, Aquarius, with her love interest, Jude. Oddly enough, the name Jude is central to both books, as the object of affection in Broder’s, and as Dr. Jude in Hunt’s. Dr. Jude leads a group therapy class that Lucy has joined for women suffering from love addiction. The titular ‘Seas’ in Hunt’s book is not the literal ocean, but a hotel in the town where the narrator is occasionally employed as a chambermaid.

Both main characters think of their love as all-consuming. Lucy in The Pisces fantasizes about eating the fish tail of her merman lover, and  ruminates on how his testicles taste like oysters. She also thinks of how her and Theo “kissed each other with open mouths, sucking at each other like we were eating mussels.” (168) In The Seas the girl wants to turn into water and go down the wrong pipe of her Jude to “fill his lungs, lovingly washing away every breath he takes.” (107) Later on she imagines that he is melting away into puddles of water and tries to drink all of him up, to take him away with her.

There are also instances in both books of the women imagining themselves as mothers to the men they love. The girl of The Seas pretends to sweat and writhe while giving birth to Jude, just so she can feel what it’s like to have him between her legs. In The Pisces Lucy imagines that both her and Theo are like wombs for each other, but also twins, siblings and lovers. Gender is contemplated more extensively in The Pisces as Lucy’s academic interest in Greek classics informs her thinking that the gods were always changing sexes to fool the mortals. Lucy imagines that Theo’s come in her mouth had a “feminine taste, oceanic, a little fishy. I felt as though I had eaten his pussy, that I was yang or yin, or whichever the male was, and he was female for a moment.” (154) Later, during one of their sexual encounters, she feels that she has a penis and is entering Theo.

The colour blue, the ocean, deep feelings, all threatening and inviting in these works, and so recurring, tied tightly with the feminine. I’m currently reading Lidia Yuknavitch’s The Chronology of Water and have lined up Maggie Nelson’s Bluets for after that. Maggie Nelson, not coincidentally, has written the introduction for this latest of edition of Hunt’s The Seas. The more meditation I do on the subject the more it continually makes itself known. There is no talking about deep emotion and the colour blue without mentioning Joni Mitchell’s landmark album. Amelie feeling so sad she turns into a puddle of water and washes away. The consumptive preacher’s wife in Sarah Perry’s The Essex Serpent, everything about her being blue and dripping with feeling - her eyes, her skin, and the objects she surrounds herself with. Blue Lips, blue veins by Regina Spektor. What is it about the water, blue, wells of sadness, all of it, that draws in so many women to use them as subject, as theme. I know no colour that has been so associated with men in the respective way that blue has been for women, no element so representative as water. “If there is magic on this planet it’s in the water” - Hannah Georgas. Yes, there is, and these women have all found it.
