Archie Jimenez and Mel Spriggs
How deeply are you sleeping
Or are you still awake?
A good friend told me
You've been staying out so late
Be careful what it takes
From what I've seen so far
The good ones always seem to break
Grab me by my ankles, I've been flying for too long
-Florence + the Machine, Sky Full of Song
Mel looks down at the deck. "It's nice to see the whole family from here," Mel says. "See them in their natural habitat, and all."
Archie looks beneath them. Up on the upperdecks, Olu is at the wheel of the ship, talking with Lucius, who is jotting down notes as Olu gracefully steers the ship towards the Republic of Pirates. Down on the deck, Pete is leaning against the railing, whittling away at something. Izzy stops on his walk up to talk with Olu in order to press a quick kiss to Pete's mouth. Pete grins so wide that Archie can see it all the way up here. Jim leans over the side of the rigging to chat with Frenchie and Fang, who are busy playing cards while Wee John sits on a crate next to them, working on a new knitting project. Roach is likely below deck in the kitchens, bustling away with dinner.
Archie can't help but smile fondly. This is her family, now. She is a part of this crew, not just as an able body, but as cared about as Mel or Lucius or Izzy or Jim. "We've got a pretty great set-up on this ship, don't we?"
Mel nods and smiles at Archie in turn. "I'm glad you're feeling better. Things weren't as fun without you here."
-aletterinthenameofsanity, everybody saw that spring had come again (with a love song)
And enter my two new blorbos and their delightful friendship! It was so much fun to have their relatively easygoing dynamic compared to all of the angst/complicated relationships that are going on elsewhere on the Revenge, and you know I gotta love a mentor/mentee dynamic between two women- ESPECIALLY two queer women. Archie insisting on having the first hug after Mel was rescued in Anguilla made me smile so wide!

Me, about to write a fic ft. Olu in a gown, Archie/Jim/Olu hurt/comfort and flirting, Olu&Mel friendship, and undercover fuckery shenanigans? More likely than you think.
(I'm now wondering how much of the inspiration for the aesthetics/vibes of this fic comes from how much early Panic! at the Disco I'm listening to. Y'all can probably tell me.)

Shinbone Alley (1970)
Warnings: Suicide mentions, attempted kitten murder Why did you choose this? I am an absolute goblin for weird 70's relics, this is completely up my alley. What is this thing? Shinbone Alley is an animated musical based on the "Archy and Mehitabel" stories by Don Marquis. This movie in particular has an unusually star studded cast. It stars Carol Channing, Allan Reed (Fred Flintstone himself), and Mel Brooks worked as a writer on this. The story follows a man who commits suicide and gets reincarnated(transformed??) into a cockroach, and it focuses on his relationship with an alley cat named Mehitabel. The film mostly focuses on the ups and downs of their unlikely friendship and his one-sided unrequited love for her. The good! I love Mehitabel! she's a hoe for mean idiots, she lives in a trash can, and despite it all she tries being nothing but positive about it. She likes her life despite it all, and I respect that. I'm really surprised that she's a female protagonist in a movie made in 1970 too. She loathes being a mother, and even tries "undoing" that by letting her kittens sit under a water spout. It's genuinely surprising this got made. The art is great I'm a sucker for Peter Max style abstract art, and the movie has it in any sequence where Archie is whining about something or being a poet. It makes him almost tolerable. The animation itself is a bit Hanna Barbera though, it definitely takes short cuts. The music is just fine. The song Flotsam and Jetsam struck a chord with me personally, if you're an adult without a partner or kids this song is for you. The bad! I hate Archie. His voice actor is great, but his character sucks. Don't get me wrong, he's well written, but I just don't like him. He's a confused mess, and even though he learns his lesson at the end, it doesn't seem like he faces much consequences. Of the three times he can't control Mehitabel- he attempts suicide (a second time), tries starting a bug revolution, and then gets blitzed and hooks up with ladybugs. There's something about sensitive artist types who make everything about themselves and don't mind their own business, it really drives me up the wall. This movie in general though, is a confused mess like Archie. This is clearly drawn and styled in a way meant for kids, but all of the themes are very adult. It's hard to see what could keep a kid engaged here. I respect what they were trying to do, and it makes for a unique viewing experience, but it doesn't really work. There's unrequited love, children out of wedlock, suicide, attempted late term kitten murder, drinking. You can sneak themes and subject manner like this in most kids media, but there's not much here that's *for kids*. Rating: 6/10
I had fun watching it, but I know that doesn't necessarily make it a good movie. Though I appreciate the overall messaging that you can't force someone to change, and they sometimes don't need to change. In the end Archie realizes this, and realizes he liked Mehitabel for who she was the whole time. Again, for a film that came out in 1970 this is a really pleasant surprise. Like a lot of the weird movies I watch, you can view this on youtube if you want to take a look.

What do you think of the episode? I think it was one of the best they've done so far, really missed Josie, Val and Melody.
+ They said there were 'crumbs' about some ships but am I the only one who didn't see any? Lol
I LOVED the episode. i think it was long overdue. i loved valerie and her mans! archie andrews, you have a lot to learn. i loved how val and mel remained best friends all these years and even roomies, the introduction of NANCY WOODS to the universe was a delight (super cute with mel, too). i loved melody and valerie's story, i just wanted more! mel dropping off law school to write? her narrating the episode? ugh, my heart, i got so emotional.
i think josie was very strong this episode too. i LOVED her reuniting with sweet pea (been on this ship since s3) and how there's this sense of love and respect between her and archie, proving that they can still be friends after it all! there's some writing choices i'm not particularly fond of, but i loved how she finally got her point of view explored in this, it was deserved.
seriously such a great episode, with great songs and performances, and fun, tender moments for friendships. tabitha and veronica a whole show apart! they were great.
and hello baby tony!
so happy for the actresses for being given the opportunity to come back and give that story some closure (and opening for a possible spin-off), but it's ultimately sad that this episode even had to exist and that we knew virtually nothing about them before. let's be positive though, a step ahead is better than no step at all.
as for ship crumbs these are the only ones i'm interested on:
plus sweet pea/josie endgame!!

Questionnaire for the rat bf, if u can?
Real Touille stan hours. Thank you. Ace rights. Let’s go under the cut and do the whole damn thing!!
Here’s the questionnaire of pride asks for the crickets! Send me anything!
I’m answering this entire thing “as” Touille, so be aware of that.
1. what is your sexuality?
I’m asexual!
2. what do you identify as?
I use the term aro-ace, for the most part. Or just ace.
3. how long have you been aware of your sexuality/identity?
Okay, well, I’ve known as long as I can remember that I’m not into romance or dating. I never understood, growing up, why everyone was always asking me about girls or why there was so much romance in the media. But if you mean knowing the word for my sexuality... then not that long, actually. It was during fall of freshman year, and the upperclassmen started talking about Winter Screw, which was coming up. I kind of freaked out when I realized it was a dating thing, because I didn’t want my roommate Francis (or anyone) to pick a date for me. So I had a little panic moment, and then Bully asked me if I was asexual. I had no idea it was a thing, but it was the best epiphany. I’ve felt so much more comfortable in my own skin since I learned there were other people like me.
4. do you have any preferences?
For, like... dating? Not applicable, I guess.
5. share a positive memory about coming out!
Because I realized I was ace in front of all of SMH at team breakfast, I didn’t really have to come out to any of them. And I haven’t really come out to that many other people, because I’m not sure my parents or my mémé would think it’s a real thing, but I did have a good experience coming out to Quinn! It was, like, two weeks after I met him, and they were doing this double-date thing with him and Nando plus Ben and Gina, who he was dating at the time, and, well, anyways, Quinn thought they were excluding me? And he said, oh, Remy, do you want to come? Are you seeing anyone? And I said, oh, no, I’m asexual, actually. And it was really nice, because Quinn just smiled and said oh, that’s lovely! I love your pride flag! and we moved on. It was really validating. Also it was the first time I really came out to anybody at all.
6. how do you feel about pride month?
Ben and Nando introduced me to the concept of pride month a few months before pride month actually happened for the first time since I met them. I like pride month because I send bad memes to my friends, and also because it’s fun on social media, but... in my regular life, I don’t really get to do that much for pride. Except the summer between sophomore and junior year, Ben came up to Quebec and we went to pride. Which was really fun, actually. And also, at the end of freshman year, Quinn sewed pride patches for a bunch of people, and he gave me a little circle that’s a hybrid of the ace flag and the aro flag, so I pin it to the hat I wear when I work at my papa’s crêperie in June.
7. do you participate in pride related events? any other events?
On the night of Winter Screw freshman year, Bully brought me to this party at his friend’s apartment, and introduced me to a bunch of other ace people. Apparently, they have this top-secret ace club??? It’s not an official campus club or anything, but they just... host parties sometimes, especially on nights where dating stuff is happening on campus, like Screw and also Valentine’s Day. I don’t know if that really counts as a pride event, but it makes me happy. It’s all kinds of people, from all over the Samwell community, and it’s really cool.
8. how do you feel about lgbtqa roles in media?
I wish there were more ace ones.
9. do you feel pride in who you are?
Honestly, yeah, I do! I’ve never really been ashamed of my identity, even before I knew there was a word for it and a community of people like me. The only time I’ve been discouraged about it is thinking about how the world is so romance-oriented, but that’s not really about myself; it’s kind of just frustration with the way society is.
10. who has been your supportive idols in your self discovery?
Bully! He was the first person to say the word ‘asexual’ to me, and he and I have been really good friends the whole time we’ve been on the team together. He teaches me about ace stuff and we usually sit together on the bus. I don’t think I would even know about asexuality at all if it weren’t for him. Okay, well, maybe Ben would have taught me eventually. But still. I’m really grateful for Bully.
11. tell us about your first crush?
Hahaha, not applicable. But I can tell you about my first real squish, if you want? Bully taught me what a squish is. It’s like a friend crush, but a little different than just wanting to be friends with a person. It was Ben for me.
12. what sort of advice to have you lgbtqa teens?
Well, for ace teens, you aren’t broken and you’re whole on your own. Never compromise the way you feel for other people’s sake.
13. have you come out to friends and family?
I’m ‘out’ to all my closest friends, but not to my family. Like I said, I’m not so sure my parents would think asexuality is even a real thing. They just think I’m taking a long time to find somebody.
14. how do you feel about the term “coming out”?
(Mel talking...) Click here for Touille’s answer on this one!
15. do you believe there is a “closet” to come out of?
For me? Not exactly... not really. Aside from generating annoying comments, coming out as ace doesn’t endanger me directly in any way. I’m lucky, because I know that’s not the case for every ace person.
16. any tips on coming out?
Oh, man, I’m definitely not qualified to give coming out tips.
17. what’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to lgbtqa characterization in media?
(Mel again!) Here’s Touille’s answer on this!
18. what’s your favorite parts of lgbtqa characterization in media?
When I actually see aro and ace characters. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a confirmed one, but I like projecting onto characters without a love interest. Jughead from the Archie comics? Obi-Wan Kenobi? Merida, the Scottish girl? Asexual icons, and thank you for asking.
19. what did your teachers say about the lgbtqa community in school?
My teachers said little to nothing. I went to a French Catholic high school, and I think they ignored it on purpose.
20. do you practice safe sex with the same sex?
Haha, not applicable.
21. what’s an absolute turn off for you in people?
Also not applicable, but in friendship terms, when people don’t shut up about themselves. I can’t stand huge egos. There were a lot of them in juniors.
22. what’s an absolute turn on for you in people?
Definitely not applicable.
23. how do you feel about lgbtqa clubs/apps/websites?
I like browsing AVEN and the LGBT+ parts of Reddit. And we have the unofficial ace club on campus. Bully calls it the ‘ace gang’.
24. how do you feel about the term “queer”?
My friends use it all the time, but I don’t really say it that much. I don’t have anything against it, it’s just not something that’s really part of my vocabulary. I don’t find it harmful.
25. how does your country view the lgbtqa community?
Canada has a long way to go on some social issues, but as far as I can tell, LGBT issues are pretty okay. We have a reputation for being more liberal than the US, which I guess is true in some ways, but things aren’t exactly perfect. But LGBT Canadians are a lot luckier than LGBT people in other parts of the world.
26. favorite lgbtqa actor/actress?
I’ve been trying to think of an example of an ace celebrity, but I’m coming up short.
27. any tips for heterosexual people on how to handle lgbtqa events/news?
Just listen, honestly. And stand up for people who are being picked on or shamed.
28. what’s the most annoying question you have ever gotten?
Definitely “when are you going to find someone?” I can’t stand that question.
29. how do you feel about receiving questions about your sexuality/identity?
As long as they’re not in the vein of, like, you know aces aren’t LGBT, right?, then I actually really enjoy getting questions about my identity. Because people in my general life don’t tend to care that much about hearing about ace experiences (except my friends, who I love), talking about it comes sparse. Thank you for asking me all these questions, by the way! I feel appreciated.
30. what is your romantic affiliation?
I’m aromantic. :)

fic asks: 14 and 20?
14. At what point in writing do you come up with a title?
at the end of the first chapter. titles and summaries are pretty much the last thing I do before posting a new fic. and i often struggle with both tbh.
i think the only exception to this rule is valhalla? i came up with the title for that fic before even outlining it, lol.
20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
oh gosh. there was so much that i included in pretty much every single chapter of little talks, but it’s been two years (can u believe? i can’t) since writing and posting that fic and i’ve forgotten so much. i usually hinted at specific themes/motifs/symbols in responses to people’s comments though, if anyone actually wants to go back and look through that (i highly doubt it, but you never know).
really proud of betty’s character development in that fic though, especially in relation to her friendships. her and polly’s relationship and that scene at Polly’s track meet still pops up in my mind from time to time. it’s a small one, but i’m proud of it.
marion(ette) has so many fucking symbols. that entire fic is symbols. i don’t remember if anyone ever really caught on to what betty’s reasoning was for some of her gifts, so i’ll re-state the title, as an added hint: Marion(ette).
valhalla is an amalgamation of so much symbolism that i can’t even keep track anymore, but here are a few symbols that guided my outlining/plotting process (and may already be evident in the two chapters i posted? i can’t remember at this point): fire, writing and speaking as drivers of fate, history as circular, Ouroboros, trees, and the dragon Fafnir.
pride and publishing is fairly lacking in the symbols department, but it’s got many references to the movies/book and so many hints for future scenes. i’m most excited about a hint from chapter one that is going to become a main plot line in the last two chapters, and it’s interesting because i don’t think anyone really caught it (other than mel, when beta’ing almost a year ago)? i’ll emphasize it here: @three-of-kings.
(chapter 3 of p&p also mentions Archie buying a raptor off the set of Jurassic Park that’s both a reference to KJ’s shenanigans and @hellodinoflower, whom I promised I would low key s/o in that update. I don’t think anyone ever noticed but oh well.)
(also also P&P is my Ethel & Betty, Cheryl & Jughead friendship rights fic, disguised as a modern day Austen AU.)
sorry this got so long (and i feel like i barely answered the questions? how did this happen), but thank you sm for sending this ask in! much love <3

Happy Holidays, @houseofhaseul! As part of my Secret Santa gift for you (the other half can be found below), I wanted to put together a little aesthetic imagining for the softer version of our Coven universe. Here, days are golden and full of what’ll be cherished remembrances, and nobody dies. Romantic connections and friendships are formed but, best of all, a found family.
Thank you so much for all the characters and ’verses we’ve created together (asdfghjkl; I can’t believe it’s going on six years since you applied to NYBN), and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your years of friendship! <3 I’ve loved every idea and creative avenue we’ve already explored, and I’m so excited for our adventures yet to come!!
(Secret Santa Part 2/2)
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4DYWTSIMC3kvKf1B6YUGS6
~ A playlist of songs either directly from my muses’ music collection or whose sound + lyrics resonated with how I think they’d feel about their respective love interests in this softer world ~
Baby I'm A Fool - Melody Gardot - from Mina
I’ve always imagined her music tastes leaning toward this jazzy, sultry sound. I’m not sure how Alex comes into the picture in an alternate universe where she wasn’t sent with a purpose, but I like to think the push-and-pull between these two still exists. If I could overlay the time period when Mina is starting to lower her walls - though still not fully trusting Alex’s intentions just yet - with a little non-diegetic music, this is the type of mood I’d like to set on a night when they’re sharing drinks in Mina’s office after everyone else has gone to their rooms upstairs.
That's All - Mel Tormé version - from Tarik
Tarik’s tunes consist of modern songs he can vibe to and music that was before his time but sounds great on vinyl. The main requirement I knew he’d have for a track representing his relationship with Archie is that it be something they could slow dance to in the greenhouse/their rooms together. The fact that this song in particular makes repeated references to “forever” and being resilient against the passage of time felt especially fitting considering Archie’s long life. I also like the pictures it paints, with years of hand holding and walks through nature. It suits them and warms my heart.
I Love You - Sarah McLachlan - from Léonie
Given that Dominic doesn’t come to the academy for detective work in this universe, it felt reasonable to assume there’d be more of a longing-in-local-proximity feel to their dynamic here. They’d be aware of each other because Léonie picked up students from the station, but they might not often have an occasion to talk otherwise. Thus, they’d pine while passing each other on the streets in town until they finally grew weary of excuses not to take a chance and try.
Dream A Little Dream - Kina Grannis version - from Kayara
Being the old soul that she is, I thought a classic song covered by a modern artist would fit Kayara pretty well. Since a common quality time activity between them involves gazing at the night sky and making up their own constellations, I couldn’t help seeking out a song that centers around nighttime and speaks frequently of the stars. This song also has that sense of aching for each other while having to be apart, which was an element I wanted to include for our dear ones who must bide their time and keep their connection a secret.
It's You - Michelle Branch - from Sofia
This song comes up on shuffle on her phone when they’re studying together one night. While Alesha’s still looking down at her book, Sofia’s just openly gazing at her in profile with a soft smile. Is this likely their First Kiss song in the softer universe? *nods* Oh yeah. 100% a First Kiss song. If anything, the lyrics just gave it a blatant push of encouragement. Thank you, Michelle Branch.
Ordinary Day - Vanessa Carlton - from Nola
Phew, I was really going back to my middle school roots in this section of the playlist, wasn’t I? I have zero regrets because applying the song to their relationship was too cute to resist. I immediately became that little pleading face emoji imaging the gentler timeline for them. Danny and Nola get to make their sparkling connection and nothing tragic interferes with actually exploring that. Someone in the comments on YouTube remarked that this song has a Peter/Wendy feel to it. Setting aside how actual Peter Pan can be kind of terrifying, I am quite taken with the Disney parallel of a redheaded boy sweeping a girl with sandy brown hair away to a magical world that is technically accessible from her own, but only if she’s let in by someone from there who decides to trust her.
I've Just Seen A Face - The Beatles - from Rhett
Initially, I assumed Rhett’s track would be something he first heard in the garage with his dad, but it turned out to be a song played in the house by his mother instead. Persuading him to let me set any of his feelings to music in public posed a bit of a challenge in and of itself. However, I think he at least approves of the fact that this one’s not overwrought. It has a fun energy for our playful pranksters, the sort of thing I could imagine over a montage of their shenanigans, with their friends laughing and exchanging knowing looks in the background.
Youth - Troye Sivan - from Mariette
I trusted my sister’s musical tastes for Ri’s selection, because they’d be such kindred spirits if Mariette existed in our world. I wanted something that captured the joy of a young love, a song that felt like a celebratory swan dive into deep feelings despite already suffering her first heartbreak. It’s the sort of thing she could use as a background track on social media with photos and/or video clips of her time spent making memories with Garrett.
Complicated - Fitz and The Tantrums - from Neve
A song with chaotic energy for our reckless-hookup-turned-relationship. This is absolutely in Neve’s iTunes library somewhere. It’s felt like Their Song to me ever since I heard it for the first time, and I could imagine her identifying with it during the early days of their relationship. The “I love to hate it” line is like, but do you really, though? Or is it the other way around? They’ll work it out and get to softer sentiments eventually. ;)
The Other Side - Betty Who - from Vanessa
I knew, for dearest Nessa’s track, I was looking for something that felt like it could fit in on a playlist with Dancing On My Own by Robyn, our cosigned Marty song from the Unconfessed Feelings Time. Betty Who’s style absolutely fits that bill. I was delighted that there was a reference to bike riding right out the gate, and I liked that this song managed to be full of wishful sentiments but not too angsty. It simply yet perfectly describes the way conversation flows between them, and how often they can stay up late into the night in their dorm room just chatting. The line about saying “I love you” when it’s likely to go unheard, at a time when she knows Marty’s still exploring with other people, adds that dash of temporarily unrequited that gives my heart pangs but doesn’t feel like it will last indefinitely. Someday Marty loving her right back will shift from the platonic variety to something romantic. Vanessa’s heart will be just as full of devotion when it does.

Jojo Rabbit
Who knew a film about Nazi’s could be funny? Well it can be. Taika Waititi writes and directs this film, based upon the book by Christine Leunens called Caging Skies. In true Waititi style, this is a satirical film where he himself plays Hitler. He is an imagination in Jojo’s mind, a 10 year old Nazi. Jojo joins a Hitler Youth group where they ‘learn’ all about Jews and why Hitler is the best. Jojo gets injured and has to stay at home, here he finds a Jew hiding in his attic, under the protection of Jojo’s mother. Jojo wants to report her but learns that his mother will be in trouble for hiding her so instead Jojo writes a book to learn all about Jews and their ‘evil’ ways. The longer he spends with the girl, the closer and friendlier he gets.
Jojo Rabbit is a really interesting film, there has been a lot of criticism about this, mainly for it’s tone and about how light-hearted the film is despite the themes within it. Some critics have argued that the film didn’t actually show the horrors that the Nazi’s inflicted. I don’t think we needed a Schindler’s List style film to show us this. In fact, if this was based in a concentration camp with Waititi’s style then yeah, that would be in bad taste. But this isn’t. It’s a satire that focuses on a 10 year old boy who is naive to the horrors that are happening. It humours Hitler without taking away the evil and by the end of it, Jojo tells him to fuck off and kicks him out of the window, banishing his once held beliefs. He’s 10 years old. I actually think Jojo Rabbit is an important film. Through Jojo and Elsa’s (the Jew girl hiding in the attic) friendship Jojo’s realises how wrong he is and how stupid it was to believe all the things he’s been brought up to believe. It shows how important education is. Without talking to a Jew, being in the presence of one he would’ve continued believing all the stereotypes, believing that they are the enemy. Without learning about minorities or religion we only take in what we have been told to take in. If I hadn’t have learned about The Troubles or Native Americans, I wouldn’t know that The British or Americans were the bad guys. It’s only once you find out something bad about countries that you’ve been taught are good you see a whole history of evil e.g The British Empire. The film shows how dangerous propaganda can be. Even today the public still believe everything they read and they act upon it. The media would make you think Boris Johnson was a saint and that Meghan Markle was Satan’s daughter the way they report on them, it’s further from the truth. I think a key bit in the film and it was only on screen was about 5 seconds long. Hitler was saying how they’re all in it together and then it cuts to Jojo and Hitler eating dinner. Jojo, stuck in a town with poverty through war is eating bread. Hitler, cozying it up, away from the danger is eating a whole pig. The elite say what the public want to hear without dealing with any repercussions. Just like the joke goes:
‘A banker, a worker, and an immigrant are sitting at a table with 20 cookies.
‘The banker takes 19 cookies and warns the worker: “Watch out, the immigrant is going to take your cookie away.”’
I understand why people might get offended by it, or feel uneasy because it’s a horrible time in history and it might seem like it isn’t taking it seriously. I think it does but just by looking at it in another perspective. Also, I think it makes a difference that Taika Waititi himself is a Jew. Now if Mel Gibson had directed it, then I think the criticism would have a stronger case. Again, just like I said about Green Book, if you do disagree, want to add something, drop us a message.
Back to the film! I think there were a lot of great performances. Mostly from the kids. All three were great but for me, Jojo’s friend Yorki, played by Archie Yates (above), stole the show. He was fantastic. His delivery and acting was fantastic. Helped that he was adorable too. However the adult actors were good too. Scarlett Johansson was wonderful as Jojo’s mother. Sam Rockwell is always good fun and even though, again, there were criticisms about his character because he was a good Nazi. I don’t necessarily think he was being nice to Elsa, but knowing that if he told the truth it meant that Jojo and his mother would have died. And Waititi was a laugh as Hitler, nailing both his movements and characteristics but also just adding that comedy element we are so familiar with in his films.
4/5 I really enjoyed Jojo Rabbit. It was a different story which was interesting. And even though it tackled some really serious and difficult themes with comedy, I think it still showed the horrors without taking away the realism of what happened.

Did u read josie and the pussycats in space
YES! it was soooooooo fucked up. like lots of fucked stuff happens in archie horror titles but this was next level though maybe im just more freaked out by sci-fi horror. also, THAT ENDING! did not see it coming honestly. like we knew sock and pepper (and albert with his one line) were gonna die for like the irony and all the randos too bc death is inevitable in these types of stories but it wasnt super predictable or anything. i got embarrassingly excited when the alexander and alexandra (AND SEBASTIAN!) showed up tbh. if you guys couldnt tell, im kinda a big fan of the cabots lol. overall i liked it though i wouldve liked more pussycats as a group and less alan m. not that i dont like alan m. but he’s more steve trevor than lois lane. josie mel and val’s friendship was sweet though, any good josie media has to have the three of them’s relationship with each other as focal point bc like they are the titular Pussycats and jatp in space delivered. not a fan of the weird alan m. x melody vibes bc pairing alan m. with any of the girls other than josie is stupid. there WAS a moment of alex x alan m. though so that makes up for it. also, this is nitpicky but i Could Not keep any of the background characters straight, more distinctive names and character designs wouldve been helpful imo. and it was probably to differentiate him from the blackness of space but i didnt like that sebastian was light brown instead of black and white. like oh so we can let seb be brown but we can’t let salem be orange even once smh. i know i just complained about a whole bunch of stuff but it was a really good read. would def recommend. unless you’re not a fan of scary stuff or dead body parts.

If you're still accepting drabble prompts, could you please write Bughead as best work friends, with Betty getting drunk at the office holiday party while Jughead stays sober (for personal reasons); he's designated driver and intends to simply drop her off at home, but she asks him to come inside and that leads to “& stay by my side until morning”... Thank you!
It took a while, but here it is!!! (Warning: Absolute pure fluff below. Continue at your own risk.)
xxx
Jughead sighed and flipped the keys around his fingers again. This wasn’t the first time he’d volunteered to be the DD for a work event, but this was the first time he’d also be driving co-workers home who didn’t work in his department. And it was the first time he’d be driving her home.
Ugly sweaters and anxiety over unrequited crushes aside (he was a Jones! Ugly sweaters and crushes didn’t happen to a Jones, or at least according to J.B.’s pep talk they didn’t), it really wasn’t a half bad party. Thanks to the new HR director Veronica Lodge, soon to be the owner of the whole damn company, their usual holiday festivities had been upgraded from the dive bar where Archie ‘knew a guy’ to a legitimate, actually-has-a-commercial-on-tv hotel bar.
“Enjoying the night, Jones? Or just the view?” Veronica asked as she made her way towards him. Impressively, she only stumbled once in her sky high heels and didn’t spill a single drop of her champagne.
Jughead’s lip curled, but he didn’t take the bait. They’d both come to an agreement shortly after Veronica had nestled into her windowless office and made it known she actually gave a damn about what happened to her co-workers. She wouldn’t say anything about his crush on Betty, and he wouldn’t remark on her infatuation with Archie.
Veronica sighed and leaned against the wall next to him. “Pity Daddy wouldn’t also let me throw a New Year’s party. It’s too much planning to meet someone under the mistletoe. At least at New Year’s you can sidle up to someone before the ball drops and claim your stake.”
“They seem to be making it work,” Jughead muttered. He pointed towards the mistletoe covered archway that had been set up in front of the bar. Archie and Betty had bumped into each other for the third time tonight. And just like the other two times, Archie would point up, and Betty would giggle. They’d exchange a chaste kiss on the cheek and order a shot of some dark liquid from the bar.
He turned away as Archie pointed up. Jughead knew how this particular scene would end. He knew it shouldn’t sting as much as it did. After all, they were only work friends. And it was a friendship borne of a love of coffee, bagels, and snide comments during work.
They’d become each other’s rock in the turbulent sea of corporate hell. His sharp biting wit paired well with her take-no-nonsense attitude, and Betty had long since admitted she’d have quit long ago if it weren’t for Jughead.
“I thought dating co-workers was against the employee manual.”
Veronica shrugged and threw back the rest of her champagne. “Daddy’s rules, not mine. Besides, the rules were meant to be broken over broad shoulders like his.”
He snorted and went back to watching his co-workers. Across the room, Dilton had torn off his sweater, festooned with tinsel, lights, and an overtly sexy elf, and waved it above his head like a banner. Reggie began to egg him on, and Dilton climbed on top of a table to the cheers of the rest of the IT department.
With a sigh, Jughead pushed off the wall. “Guess that’s my cue.”
“Like a bull to a matador,” Veronica mumbled into her empty flute. “Vaya con dios, Torombolo. I have a feeling you’ll need all the help you can get tonight.”
Jughead pinched the bridge of his nose to steel himself before heading towards the inebriated software engineer. This was always the worst part of the night, rounding up the drunks. It was worse than filing the monthly tax reports and infinitely worse than his required one on one weekly meetings with Cheryl.
Thankfully Dilton readily agreed that now was a good time to go home once he’d face planted off of the table, and it didn’t take much to convince Josie, Mel, and Val that the time to leave had come. It was easy enough to get them to the front doors, though they’d scattered a few times to say one last goodbye or sneak in one more shot. By the time they’d made it to the front door, Mel had lost both her earrings, Dilton’s tie was around his forehead, and Josie had somehow acquired Reggie’s sweater and was carrying it around like a cat would a canary.
While they were waiting for the valet to bring Jughead’s ratty old sedan to the front, another voice called out to him. He knew that voice, and braced himself for the image of Archie and Betty clinging together like two birds on the wire. He turned with a forced expression of cheer on his face but thankfully Archie was nowhere in sight. There was only Betty, with her reindeer antlers crooked on her head and sparkly makeup smeared across her cheeks.
“Betty!” Dilton called out in that happy tone only the truly sloshed could achieve. “Are you come to join our merry sleigh ride through the snow?”
Without encouragement, Josie, Mel, and Val began to sing a lovely, if slightly slurred, rendition of Sleigh Ride. Betty giggled and the sound of it threatened to quirk Jughead’s lips into a smile.
“If you still have any room left at the inn, I’d love to join you.”
Mel slipped a hand around Betty’s waist and pulled her close. “There’s always room on my lap for you.”
Val made a hand gesture that confused Jughead and Dilton, but all four women burst out in laughter that didn’t subside until they were snug in his four seat sedan.
Josie waited until the doors were closed to lean forward and, in a stage whisper, to announce to Jughead and Dilton that, “What happens at a work retreat, stays at a work retreat.”
“Except for Reggie Mantle,” Val said with a sly grin that sent the women a’giggling.
The rest of the ride was filled with the women’s laughter and chatter. At the first stoplight, Dilton’s head lolled forward. Before Jughead could check for a pulse, his mind already racing to every first aid class he’d ever been forced to take, Dilton let out a loud snore.
Mel laughed and leaned through the front seats to turn the radio up and over to the latest dance craze. By the time they’d reached Dilton’s apartment, even Jughead was murmuring along to confectionary laced tune.
Three stops and another eight songs later, Betty was left alone in the backseat. It didn’t take her long to crawl through to the front, her elbow narrowly missing Jughead’s forehead, and plop down in the passenger seat.
“You have very pretty eyes,” she said.
Jughead glanced over to find her leaning against the console, staring at him with sleepy eyes.
“Seatbelt,” he said. Betty pouted, but pulled the strap across her. Jughead cleared his throat and wondered why he’d chosen this route. Betty lived the closest to the hotel, and yet…
“So you and Archie?” he asked as nonchalantly as he could manage.
Betty reached up to toy with a lock of his hair. “Hmm? What about Archie?”
“You two kissed,” he said slowly, as if trying to deny the inevitable truth coming out.
“On the cheek. Because of the mistletoe.” Her voice wobbled on the edge of suspicion and laughter. “Besides, what’s a kiss between old friends. We grew up together after all.”
“When’s the wedding?” Jughead muttered, unable to keep his mouth shut.
From the corner of his eye he saw Betty’s head tilt, the same as it did when she was working through a particularly challenging copy-edit. Jughead reached towards the radio and turned it up, all the way hoping this was one of those small things a drunk person would forget the next day.
The rest of the snow ride was quiet, save for the radio wishing them good cheer. Jughead pulled into a parking spot closest to the side door of Betty’s apartment. He refused to look at Betty, even when she put her hand on his arm.
“You’re not jealous, are you?” she asked.
Her breath tickled his ear, and Jughead started at how close she was. He stared at her, his usual wit and whim leaving him high and dry.
“No, not at all.”
Betty smiled her bright, sunny smile at him as she opened up her door. “Good, then you’ll come up for some cookies and milk? I’ve got a few left over and I’d hate to have to give them to my next door neighbor. She vacuums before eight on the weekends.”
She slipped away before he could decline her request. With a groan, Jughead turned the car off and trekked through the snow behind her. If it had been anyone else, he’d have watched them leave. But with Betty he’d long ago resigned himself to the fact he couldn’t say no to her.
When they reached her apartment, Betty had already run through the work gossip she usually filled him in on at work, and Jughead only had to steady her once on the stairs. When they reached her apartment and she’d unlocked the door, he hesitated at the entrance, unsure of why he was even here.
Because of your useless middle school crush on a coworker maybe?
He ignored his own thoughts and stepped into the apartment. Betty had already taken off her coat, scarf, and shoes and was in the doorway of what he assumed was her bedroom.
“Let me slip into something a bit more comfortable. Help yourself to anything in the fridge.”
On anyone else it would have sounded like a come on, but with Betty it was a statement of fact. So he settled himself down at her kitchen island, too wound up to take her up on the offer of whatever leftovers were in the fridge. It wasn’t long before Betty returned to the kitchen and pulled out a tupperware with a few cookies left.
When she set one in front of Jughead, he admired the craftsmanship for a moment. It was a santa, iced to perfection with his long whiskers, black gloves, and boot buckles. She’d even gone so far as to put wrinkles on the bag he carried on his back. The craftsmanship, however, did not stop him from eating it all in one bite.
“Slow down there, Jug. I’ve only got two more left,” Betty said with a slight giggle in her voice.
She set two glass of milk on the counter and took the seat next to him. He did as she asked, taking smaller bites.
“So you and Archie aren’t -”
Betty shook her head and made a face. “We went to the same high school. Maybe at one point things might have worked out, but we grew up together. It would be like dating my brother. No, more like dating my sister’s ex.”
She peered at him, and he shifted under her scrutiny. Not many people could read him, but to her he’d always been an open book. “You really are jealous, aren’t you.”
Jughead shrugged and bit the head off a reindeer cookie, red nose and all.
“Why are you still single, Jughead Jones?” Betty asked out of the blue.
He glanced over at her. She was staring at the Christmas tree she’d bribed him to help set up. Instead of answering, he took another bite.
“I could ask you the same thing,” he said after taking a drink of milk. “Why are you still single, Betty Cooper?”
Betty pulled her legs up onto the bar stool and spun to face him. Her chin was lifted in a determined challenge.
“Because the man I like is too comfortable with being just friends to do anything about it.”
Jughead nearly swallowed his tongue. Of course she’d have picked up on it. Even Veronica had noticed his moping months ago and they didn’t work on the same floor. He cleared his throat and stared resolutely at the Christmas tree.
“Maybe it’s not a comfort thing. Maybe it’s more of a doesn’t want to screw up a good thing. Thing.”
Betty snorted. “Do I really have to do everything, Jones?”
Jughead turned, mildly offended by her statement. After all, he’d been the one to plan the birthday lunches for the last three months and he’d been the one to pick out the Christmas tree and -
Any and all proof to the contrary was immediately lost as Betty kissed him.
When they parted, he looked up and Betty asked what he was doing.
“Checking for mistletoe.”
She laughed and set her hand on his cheek. “I promise we don’t need mistletoe for a repeat.”
“A Christmas miracle,” he muttered, but his wry comment was belied by his grin.
Betty chewed on her lip, thinking a moment. “Stay?”
Jughead pulled back, startled by her sudden request. The last thing he wanted with her was a one night stand, especially when she’d been drinking.
“Betty, you know I’m not that kind of girl. You haven’t even bought me dinner or flowers yet, and what would my mother think?” he asked, already halfway to the door.
Betty followed him and grabbed his hand. “No, not like that. It’s just the snow was coming down hard, and I know you’re tired from closing the Baker account this week, and it’s dark -”
“And you worry.”
She sighed, relieved that he’d found her train of thought. “And I worry. It’s almost three a.m. You wouldn’t want to run over Santa on his way home from work, would you?”
So he stayed the night, cuddled up against Betty to ward off the chill in the apartment.
At daybreak he awoke suddenly, stifled by the heat. Betty had long since rolled over to the far side of the bed.
A pang of anxiety immediately assaulted him. What if that kiss had been nothing more than a drunken inhibitionless spur of the moment thing? Or what if she’d forgotten? Logically he knew Betty had been a shade closer to tipsy than drunk, and that she rarely acted on a whim unless she’d already thought out all outcomes. But he couldn’t keep the thought from cropping up.
One look out the window showed that the roads hadn’t been cleared yet. Too hot to sleep, Jughead took refuge on Betty’s couch. He settled one of the many Christmas themed movies and it wasn’t long until he was sound asleep.
When woke the second time, he was greeted with the smell of bacon, eggs, and pancakes accompanied by a woman humming Christmas carols. Groggy, he sat up and watched as Betty moved around the kitchen.
“Morning,” he said softly.
She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and stirred something on the stove. “Good morning. I woke up and thought -”
“I got too hot,” he blurted out. At that moment he was certain he’d have done anything to make sure Betty knew he liked her.
With a smile, she walked over and kissed him over the back of the couch. Whatever worries had assailed him that morning, her brilliant smile evaporated them all.

OFMD (fic) analysis: The Power of Names, Agency, and Creating Yourself
So, this is going to be Part 1 out of who knows how many analyzing different aspects of @aletterinthenameofsanity 's magnum opus OFMD fic series "made a promise when I left for the coast (made a life out of chasing a ghost)." Now, the series is divided into three sections, "Season 2," "Season 3," and "Extras" (which includes missing scenes, AUs, and post-canon "special episodes"). This first essay will be addressing the symbolic/thematic meaning of characters choosing their own names in this series throughout all parts (some of these metas will only tackle one section/season/ or even fic).
It is clear in this series that names take on a particular meaning, due to the multiple times it is emphasized, such as in part 15 of the series (the "pilot" of "Season 3"), when Captain Olu says, "Everyone's entitled to choose their own name on my ship." Names, when taken on a ship, allow someone to both shed their precious life and claim one for their own. I'm going to go through the various ways this is presented in series and how letting characters choose their names on the Revenge allows them to gain agency within their lives and world.
1): Name as Gender: Jim and Pete
Early on in the series, Jim and Pete's friendship is established from Jim's POV, where we discover that before the Blackbeard-Kraken-era, Jim and Pete bonded when Pete revealed that Pete is also trans, which in the series is often referred to as "the power of creation" (there's an essay analyzing the religious implications in the works, I swear). This is a point of connection and pride between them, and is the foundation to a great and enduring friendship and place of trust that often gets both of them through low points.
This friendship is further emphasized in part 13, Pete's internal monologue echoes previous assertions by Jim's internal monologue that "they have things in common that go beneath everything, a connection that threads itself across the sea, through razors and potential top scars and names left buried on land."
2) Name as Family: The Jimenezes and the Spriggs
A) The Jimenez Matelots
During their wedding reception in part 9 of the series, Olu and Archie both make it clear that they are going to take Jim's last name due to the importance of becoming Jim's family. Olu will trade in his last name, and Archie will take on a last name for the first time, as a sign of loyalty, loved, and comfort, because for Olu and Archie, "What price is a last name when it comes to making Jim feel comfortable and loved?"
B) The Spriggs Siblings
The choice of the last name "Spriggs" by Mel and Lucius has almost the opposite backstory of the Jimenez matelots- rather than keeping a last name to honor a family, the Spriggs siblings keep their last name to spite their abusive father. When Mel is asked by Roach in part 18 of the series as to why she keeps her last name when, as a pirate, she could have easily dropped it entirely when starting a new life, she tells him that she kept it because it connected it to her brother. Her internal monologue explains that "She stayed Mel Spriggs, damn the consequences, not because the last name gave her protection, but because it connected her to the one person who, at any point in her life, had protected her." It has nothing to do with "the lily-livered douche" that was her father; it as to do with her connection to Lucius. And as the series progresses, even after Lucius gets married to Izzy and Pete, we see that he keeps his last name while Pete picks up the last name "Hands-Spriggs." As much as his matelots mean to him, shown by the rings they share (objects as symbolism will be another analysis), his relationship with his sister is just as important to him.
3) Name as Intimacy: Frenchie and Zheng Yi Sao | Ching Shih
So, this one is not as startling or connected to character agency as the others, but I really like what this relationship does with language. Zheng Yi Sao literally translates as "wife of Zheng Yi" and is used almost as both name and title, the name of the Pirate Queen and Emperor of China, while Ching Shih is her Cantonese name, within the language she grew up speaking. Historically, Zheng Yi Sao had to learn Mandarin to fit in with upper crust society, and it makes sense that the name she rules the seas with (even in OFMD) is within that more "elevated" language.
But here's the kicker: Frenchie doesn't call her Zheng. He calls her Ching Shih, honoring where she came from, acknowledging that he gets a far more intimate side of her than the rest of the world do. In part 40, in the moment of their engagement (which comes after years of a really fun half friends-with-benefits, half-long-distance-relationship that they have going on), Frenchie accepts Zheng's proposal with the line "I’d love to be yours, Ching Shih, as long as you- not your title, or your power, or whatever, just you - would be mine.”
4) Name as Agency: Mel and Roach
When Mel first joins the crew of the Revenge, Olu calls her "Miss Spriggs" and she asks to be called Mel instead. It is made clear that to her, her first name is a gesture of identity and agency as she begins a new life, a fact that is emphasized in part 39, which covers Mel's life leading up to the moment she murders her parents and leaves home. This part refers to Mel exclusively by the name "Melanie" until the moment she leaves Anguilla and takes her agency back into her own hands, paralleling the death of "Blackbeard" and the freedom of the crew with the line "Melanie Spriggs dies along with her parents; Blackbeard dies along with Izzy’s love for Edward Teach."
In part 18 of the series, we see Roach explain that his choice of name was a similar act of agency, a moment when he chose the name thar embodied his own survival instinct with the lines ""Being a pirate is about creating a life for yourself. A name, a family, a home. I picked Roach because I refuse to let anyone kill me.” He gives her a toothy grin that she can’t help but return. “I’m an invincible little fucker.”"
5) Name as Family (Part 2): Femi Boodhari and the Jimenez Matelots
Finally, we return to the theme of names being used for chosen family. When the Jimenez matelots visit Femi, Olu’s mother, in part 41 of the series, at first Jim is worried that Femi will be disappointed that her son traded away his name for theirs, Femi gives Jim and Archie a way to honor and carry both the Jimenez and Boodhari names and legacies: as a blacksmith, she makes Jim a knife and Archie a new axehead with the Boodhari name in the side so that way the family, their culture, and her own legacy of escaping slavery and starting her own business and family can be honored. Though it's not as straightforward an example of "choosing a name" as the others, I think it is a nice endcap in this series for the theme.
(Also, as a note: these metas/analysises take a lot longer to write than it took me to make moodboards. So they'll probably come out a little less frequently, even if they are just as much fun to do!)

Ok, is it just me, or are you kind of mad the way ras ended the pussycats/treated val and mel? That scene in 207 with val and mal telling josie they quit.. that is the last time we saw val and mel, they aren’t in the finale episode im pretty sure,, that is shit. val dated archie in s1/helped him with his music, the least ras could do is put her in the finale ep, even moose was in the final ep. He just dropped val/josie/Mel’s friendship and didn’t care at all, didn’t care about the pussycats.
I want to say it’s because Hayley and Asha has been so busy and I want to blame scheduling but …. would they have used them even if they were free? Lets be real, I feel like they wouldn’t have ….
But genuinely, I’m so so so happy that they are doing other things outside of Riverdale. Hayley is doing so much more beyond Riverdale, more than what Riverdale could have given her, and I’m happy to see Asha’s articles and see her advocating for herself and for other black actresses. I feel like Riverdale wouldn’t have given them a proper storyline. So instead of a half assed plot line, I’m so happy that they are taking more opportunities outside of the show, because I feel like the show would have stifled them/not used them to their full potential.
I really have to see the silver lining of this situation, ya know? I would definitely prefer them with a proper storyline over anything. That is what they should have gotten from the start, but since they don’t have that, I’m lowkey glad that they found better opportunities outside of the show because RD wouldn’t have used them to their full potential.
And to reiterate before people yell at me: the show should have given them proper storylines and screen time. Absolutely. There are so much shit storylines right now that I don’t want to see and that I think are absolutely useless, and I think RAS should have given that screen time to other characters and I’m SOOO angry about that. So I feel you.

Here we are in June and I’m writing my second post for OWLS (OWLS stands for Otaku Warriors for Liberty and Self-Respect). I will admit, it took me a bit to get going with this month’s theme but I’m pretty happy with the end result.
For those who don’t know: OWLS are a group of otaku bloggers who promotes acceptance of all individuals regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and disability. OWLS emphasise the importance of respect, kindness, and tolerance to every human being. Each month, OWLS will look at a specific theme. If you want to know more, please do click on the logo in the side bar.
The theme for May: Pride
In honour of “Pride Month,” we will be discussing the word, “Pride” and its meaning. We will be exploring pop culture characters’ most satisfying and joyful achievements or skills that they possessed and whether or not these qualities could be seen as a positive or negative aspect in their personal lives and/or society.
The Pride of the Protagonist
I really struggled with this theme at first. Mostly because for me ‘pride’ is one of those double edged swords. Characters with too much pride annoy me as they come off as arrogant. Characters with too little pride also annoy as they come off as doormats. Though it is much the same in real life. I feel people need to have pride in themselves but it shouldn’t cross the line into being egotistical or conceited. And I kind of looked at this issue when I wrote a feature back in 2016 on anime characters who want to be the very best (no Pokemon in the post but a focus on Ichigo from Bleach and Light from Death Note).
However, my personal thoughts on pride aside, in narratives pride is a driving force for characters. For better or worse, characters can make decisions and take actions to protect their pride and this moves both the characters and the plot forward. Still, at times you have to question what that pride is based on and whether or not it was particularly beneficial to act in that way.
For anime I’m watching at the moment, the immediate one that sprang to mind when thinking about whether or not pride was helpful is Record of Grancrest War. Now, there’s a lot of questionable decisions in the narrative outside of character motivations and yet I think a lot of the audience would be happy to accept a lot of the things that have happened if the character motivations would make sense.
Now we could look at the choices made by so many characters in this anime. Marrine deciding she has to unify the continent herself and willing to even resort to chemical warfare to achieve that end. Milza being Milza. The number of commanders who have ridden out to their deaths rather than surrendering. The number of characters who have committed suicide upon losing a battle (and has anyone ever inquired as to the mental health of the mages because they seem particularly suicidal). But instead of looking at all of that, because it is messy and doesn’t relate well to other stories that actually have some logic behind them, I want to look at Theo and his decision to face Milza in a one-on-one fight.
Realistically, this just reminded me of Sarah in the Labyrinth:
Sarah: No! I have to face him alone.
Didymus: But why?
Sarah: Because that’s the way it’s done!
Didymus: Well, if that is the way it is done, then that is the way you must do it. But, should you need us…
Hoggle: Yes, should you need us…
Sarah: I’ll call.
So, why does she need to face the Goblin King alone? She has a whole group of friends waiting and yet she’s going to go fight the guy with magic powers by herself, armed with… Confidence she’s the protagonist so it will all work out somehow? Even as a kid, this scene never sat well with me.
As does Theo’s decision to fight Milza one-on-one. It has already been established that Milza is by far the stronger fighter of the two. Despite Theo’s preparations to wear down Milza’s army and to isolate him, fighting him by himself is pretty much suicidal, given that in a realistic world, Milza would have broken through Theo’s defense and killed him early on.
That isn’t what happens though. Instead, Milza beats away at Theo, hitting his guard and sword continuously, and in the process he wears himself out before Theo prattles at him and then runs him through. And once again, we get an excellent look at why pride is not a useful trait for character survival when Milza is given an opportunity to just surrender and flat out turns it down allowing Theo to kill him and somehow justify it.
An argument could be mounted that Theo has to beat Milza to prove he is worthy of leading the alliance and inheriting Vilar’s crest, but realistically if Theo lead the army that reclaimed the castle and wiped out Milza’s troops, would it matter if Theo had actually personally killed Milza. Furthermore, would it have mattered if the other characters had brought Milza down to the ground where Theo could have still walked up and done his little speech and offered Milza a chance to live before delivering the finishing blow?
But let’s expand that argument to more or less any story about a lone hero who rises up and some of the convoluted reasons narratives come up with as to ‘why’ they end up facing the villain alone.
Lethal Weapon gives us an excellent example of this in the fight of Riggs vs Mr Joshua. They are fighting on the lawn, literally surrounded by police all armed with guns, and yet they continue a smack down. Running around the perimeter, we see Murtaugh claiming he’ll take responsibility as it is Riggs’ arrest and the others shouldn’t interfere.
Um…
I’m not sure where that fits into any kind of standard police procedure or common sense. It makes for a great fight sequence. We get to see how tough Riggs is and how awesome he is at fighting. We also get to see him being the benevolent man and not killing Mr Joshua, you know, until Mr Joshua grabs a gun. But it doesn’t make a huge amount of sense.
From a character point of view, we can see why Riggs wants to fight him. That is clear. And the reason he might want him dead. But that drive, his sense of pride in wanting to be the one to take him down, is pretty silly in the grander context leaving him quite badly injured and almost killed. More importantly, despite what Mutaugh is saying, I’m not sure the rest of the police would just chill and watch for the sake of Riggs’ personal vendetta.
Over and over again we see these kinds of protagonists who push the limits and boundaries in the pursuit of defending their pride. And while there might seem to be something noble about this particular action, the end result is something that seems slightly faulty to me. To assume that an achievement is one you cannot be proud of unless you do it alone is really inaccurate and realistically, collectively having pride in the achievements of a group is more likely to lead to social cohesion than lauding individual achievements. Would Theo have been any less a character for not facing Milza alone? Would Sarah have failed to realise she could beat the Goblin King if Hoggle and Sir Didymus have accompanied her? Would Mr Joshua be any less dead or arrested if the full force of the police had simply swarmed him on arrival at the scene?
Having pride is important as people all have value. But protagonists regularly go too far. They cross the line into believing that they must stand alone and it is only their strength that will succeed. While it definitely makes for some great viewing and has lead to some truly epic scenes, the application of this kind of pride into the real world would definitely be problematic.
So let’s bring this back to Pride Month. Pride Month isn’t about the lone wolf going off to bring down the villain in a showy display of individual strength and self-glorification. Being acknowledge for either your individual self or for your achievements (both individual and collective) don’t equate to tearing someone else down.
In that sense, Sailor Moon with her ‘love and friendship’ mantra is probably a better role model as she reaches out to her friends for support when facing her enemies and even reaches out to her enemies where possible.
