Dignified treatment of animals culled for human consumption

A #PIL (Public Interest Litigation) was filed by the Gau Gyan Foundation before High Court of Meghalya at Shillong in January 2023. The matter relates to the #treatment of #animals that are culled for human consumption and their #transportation across the State.

The Division Bench of Hon'ble Mr. Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee J and Hon'ble Mr.Justice W. Diengdoh J directed the State to ensure the #ethical treatment of animals across the board, even those which are culled for human #consumption and those which are used as farm animals, including the mode and manner of transportation thereof and appreciated the public spirited petitioner.

Facts:

The petitioner apprised the Court about the inhumane manner in which flesh and #carcasses are #displayed at #roadsidestalls and heads of pigs shown almost #astrophies.

The other aspect pointed out by the petitioner was that though laws are in place for members of #animalwelfareorganization's to be inducted into committees to oversee the treatment of animals in the market-places within districts, there is #no memorandum of #procedure or standard operating procedure as to who would be the representatives, what would be the extent of their say and how the State ought to take cognizance of their objections or demands.

The State in a very constructive manner took the matter and asked the Petitioner to give a list of dos and don’ts for the State to consider the same.

Suggestions were handed over by the Petitioner to the State in the month of March 2023. The State submitted its detailed report before the Court and copy of the same was provided to the petitioner and petitioner was satisfied with the report.

Observation of the Court:

Animal carcasses are brazenly displayed on streetside shops, sometimes complete with beheaded heads of pigs in open view.

Such sight may not be appealing even to the most carnivorous of humans, some measures have to be taken to ensure that such displays are restrained and altogether prohibited.

Apart from the hideous sight, there is also an element of hygiene involved since the meat displayed is open to the grime and dust of the street and may turn quite toxic even before it is sold.

Submission of the State:

The State submitted that it would do well to set an example and completely prohibit the display of animal carcasses in meat shops, though they may be stored in refrigerators or containers or even in showcases within the premises and not open to public view from outside.
