Helaena Targaryen
From what I gather from the show and the wiki's Helaena is one of the characters that fate just loves to sucker punch. My understanding is that she is sort of like a Cassandra parallel. Gifted with some prophecy, doomed in that all her warnings are ignored. So I feel for her quite a bit and wanted to capture that.... "madness" in futility? in her costume design. Her gown closely matches the style of her mother, but the colors are all washed out and almost sickly-looking. Her hair is unbound and unadorned. I suppose she should feel almost like a living ghost, or a Crimson Peak reference.

i'm sorry but under any other circumstances this entire scene would be absolutely comedy gold
Tumblr media
like imagine sitting in a park or church minding your business and your old childhood friend comes up to you out of the nowhere wearing a nuns outfit and frantically whispering "i need to talk to you" with absolutely zero explanation beyond that and then pulls out a knife

So like a critical component of understanding team green and Alicent’s motivation for pushing their claim is completely lost on this fandom because of the fact that it’s so irrelevant nowadays that we wouldn’t even consider it.
But like…for most of human history marriages, especially aristocratic marriages, were binding social contracts that were meant to provide benefits and incentives to both parties. The woman would perform her wifely duties of bearing heirs (sons), child rearing, emotional (and physical - sometimes against her will unfortunately) support, and generally running the household in domestic affairs. And in exchange for these labors and quite frankly difficult and at times harmful tasks the woman was provided with safety from the outside world, all her needs being taken care of, and her children being the heirs. And a woman’s son being the heir means consistent protection into her old age when her often much older husband eventually died.
There was a purpose to marriage outside of love and ambition. But because we are privileged enough to live in a more modern society where marriage is a personal contract for which the technicalities can be selected by both individuals to ensure security and happiness, we cannot really even consider that once upon a time in the not so distant past there was a clear purpose. The man got sons/heirs and the woman got sons/protectors to care for her in her old age.
So when Alicent pushes for her son she has a plethora of reasons: believing in tradition, protecting the lives of her children who have competing claims, consolidation of suffering, etc. But she has one very clear and very reasonable reason that nobody acknowledges. She delivered on her part of the bargain and contract and she wants to collect what she is owed. She produced the sons, she gave the emotional and physical support (against her genuine will), she reared the children, she ran the household domestically and the entire kingdom. She did “everything expected of her forever upholding the kingdom, the family, and the law”. And now it’s time for her to collect her dues now that her much, much older husband is dead. To have her son be king and to be taken care of into her old age.
That is the contract she agreed to. That is the contract almost every woman in history agreed to. I give you a son and I get comfort and security when you (the husband) die and my son becomes the heir.
So I can go on and on about the personal, psychological reasoning that Alicent has that are all perfectly valid. But I don’t have to because at the end of the day she did her part of this marital obligation and contract and she deserves to receive her rewards.

Absolutely hysterical to me that Gwayne’s final straw was seeing Criston with Alicent’s favour. He’d been in silent disapproval of their relationship up to that point, happy to turn a blind eye, then peeps him huffing his sister’s hanky like it’s poppers and is all:

The thing about HotD is that it while it absolutely minimizes the agency and ambition of both Rhaenyra and Alicent, this is specifically used to glorify Rhaenyra and frame her as righteous while condemning Alicent and framing her lacking. That's the key difference in both their textual portrayals that has directly led to 90% of the fandom hailing Rhaenyra as the second coming of Christ while spewing the most hateful vitriol at Alicent just for existing. But y'all are not prepared for that conversation.

ever protected by the frankincense fumes of her faith, alicent favors jasmine scented bath oil. from the lush gardens of the reach, floral is home — where she takes refuge. jasmine is less offensive and quieter then other florals, and she wears it like a sigil.
consequently, all of her children grown into the same scent pallet.
aegon doesn’t really care. the servants can put whatever oil into his bath that they chose, and he will not protest. jasmine just hasn’t left the warm water since he was a child, bathed in his mothers safety. it mixes with the syrupy sweet smell of grapes and spice, mulled wine, that drips from his tongue when he opens his mouth.
helaena likes the smell of jasmine, it makes her think of her mother — and when her mother was happy. it compliments the earthy scent that sticks to her skin from hours spent in the gardens looking for creatures in the dirt. petrichor and rosemary follow suit, dancing through the smooth strands of her silver hair.
of alicent’s children, aemond is the most fond of the floral scent. jasmine oil flows heartily into the water of his methodical bath. it gives him an obsessively clean scent, mixed with the heavy lye soap he scrubs his skin near raw with.
rhaenyra never favored overly ‘feminine’ scents. if she smelled like dragon and smoke, she was keen to lean into fragrances that covered that. cetalox and amber bear enough ambiguity to cover what she does. the frankincense smoke that sticks in her hair on the worst days revelas more than it covers — a yearning for something lost.
ever his mothers son, jacaerys follows in her amber scented footsteps. warm and heady, sweet spice and patchouli mark his presence. they blend well with the smokey scent he can’t quite scrub from his skin — too much time on dragon back. hair is cherished on dragonstone, and the lavender oil that soaks his curls every fortnight softens the intoxicating fragrance of his being.
cregan is ever bound to the north, the smell of pine trapped in his hair, and under his skin. warm and grounding, cedar wood and vetiver make his embrace even safer, crowing his thick furs with the smell of home.

I made a post about how the show doesn’t hold Viserys accountable as a perpetrator since he’s continuously praised in the narrative (and this is reinforced by the producers saying shit like him and Alicent having a “loving marriage”) and I can’t even tell you how many comments I’ve gotten saying that I don’t “understand” that this is a medieval show and can’t be viewed through a modern lens.
And that got me thinking. Because I agree, we shouldn’t view the show through a modern lens, but so many viewers do. That’s why they accept things like Rhaenyra being next in line to the throne, Laenor agreeing to run away and leave his entire family behind to ‘live his life’, Cole ‘overreacting’ when Rhaenyra doesn’t want to run away with him, Rhaenyra having bastards born from a loving affair not being a big deal etc etc
So I wonder; why do people only bring this rhetoric up concerning Alicent? Why is Viserys marital rape of her excused as ‘that’s just how things were’, but Rhaenyra’s usurpation is vile sexism?
Why is Alicent a woman trapped in a medieval setting while Rhaenyra isn’t?

Alicent Hightower, Little Miss Greensleeves
At the wedding of Rhaenyra and Laenor Valeryon Alicent makes a dramatic entrance in a brilliant green gown. A declaration for House Hightower instead of the reds and blacks she used to wear for her husband's House. I know some people love this show-dress but I can't get behind it. It looks too flimsy to be a Queen's show-stopping ensemble. It needed length, or folds of fabric... even just better lining in the bodice would have helped. It's honestly looked better in the cosplays I've seen.
I will give it to the show designers though, it is a hard gown to design. I completed this illustration at least 3 times before I knew for certain what it was going to look like. Hopefully the elements of Hightower fashion/anti-Targaryen fashion i've been mentioning and building to are recognizable.

The Greens: Queen Alicent Hightower
“What have I done but what was expected of me? Forever upholding the kingdom, the family, the law. While you flout all to do as you please. Where is duty? Where is sacrifice? It's trampled under your pretty foot again.”

hotd's commentary on patriarchy is so much more interesting when you allow yourself to acknowledge the differences in privilege and power between the various women we see. aemma, alicent, laena, rhaenys, rhaenyra- they all have varying levels of privilege that come to them either indirectly or directly. rhaenyra is, ofc, undisputedly at the top. and this doesn't sideline or villainize rhaenyra in any way, because no amount of privilege will change the fact that she is not a man. like otto said: she could be jaehaerys reborn, could be as wise and powerful and mighty as any human being could be, and at the end of the day society would still see her as a woman. as the most powerful woman, sure, but as a woman. and i think that's just a much more salient point- that no amount of power within a system will allow you to breach the confines of that system. no matter how much influence these woman gain within the system of patriarchy, they're never able to be free of it.

made a "what if rhaenyra had daughters instead of sons" fancast – so now i feel it is only justice to do a "what if alicent had daughters instead of sons" edition.
[ elle fanning as alyssa targaryen. feel like some of her work in the great is very much a fem!aegon vibe. also obligatorily named after vizzy t's mama ]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ freya allan/hunter schafer as aemma targaryen. viserys is BOUND to name a kid aemma if he had more daughters, i'm convinced. aemma would believe herself visenya reborn.
where freya has the environment/resources to suit a fem aemond, hunter schafer has the looks 1000% ]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ anya taylor joy as daenaera targaryen. no notes, just felt like daeron had to be looped in here as the 3rd son ]
