via medicaltalks Case of a baby born with a tail (vestigial tail)!! ⚠️
This is a birth defect in which the tail bone fails to regress during the development process of the embryo. It's rare but real.
Human tail is a curiosity, a cosmetic stigma and presents as an appendage in the lumbosacral region.
The true, or persistent, vestigial tail of humans arises from the most distal remnant of the embryonic tail. It contains adipose and connective tissue, central bundles of striated muscle, blood vessels, and nerves and is covered by skin. Bone, cartilage, notochord, and spinal cord are lacking. The true tail arises by retention of structures found normally in fetal development. It can even move and contract, and occurs twice as often in males as in females. A true tail is easily removed surgically, without residual effects.
Surgery is the treatment for a vestigial tail. Because it is composed of adipose and muscular tissue, doctors can quickly remove these types of tails with a simple excision usually soon after birth.
The human tail is an example of vestigial organ and is supposed to represent useless remnant of what were once functional and useful organ in our primitive ancestors.

my mum is. so weird. not in the "oh hahaha, i'm so silly and random!" but like, "oh yeah, i let my 9 year old watch true crime documentaries and medical tv shows, and enthuse about medical practices with them!" kind of way. she's a nurse, so it kind of makes sense? but it does have the side effect of me and my sibling growing up to be practically entirely undisturbed by gore and blood and stuff.
but there's other stuff too.
she once panicked so badly on a plane that she audibly said "we're all gonna die!"
my mum and my dad, they're both so smart, both in medical, but... they both thought it was a good idea to turn the jets of their hot tub on while they were draining it. i hear a whoosh noise from the window, and when i look over there's a fucking geyser of hot tub water??? dogs run inside, there's shouting as they're both covered in water. when its under control again, my dad says, “well. lets not do that again.”
???? like yea?? don't?? do that????
we play a game when we go to diners and stuff to eat out, where we'll go to the medicaltalks instagram, and we try to guess what's going on in each post. dad and sibling hate it.
something happened recently. we were in washington the other day, and i was looking at the drinks menu in a fancy little italian restaurant, but the three of us (me/mum/dad) realized that i can't drink in the US. we're canadian, so usually, i can drink, and mum made the remark, "you can buy a gun but you can't drink." dad questioned it, so mum decided to check. she leaned over her phone in the booth, and whispered,
"hey siri, how old do you have to be to buy a gun in washington?"
and siri responded:
"got it, this is what i found for 'how old do you have to be to buy a gun in washington'"
it was so loud, i just burst out laughing as mum desperately tried to lower her phone's volume.

Reposted from @catholicconnect “Let us practice charity every day. God is love: he who abides in love abides in God and God in him. Let us not forget, every day, and even every moment, to make an offering of our actions to God, doing everything for love of Him.” -St. Giuseppe Moscati . Moscati remained true to his faith his entire life, taking a vow of chastity and practicing charity in his daily work. He viewed his practice of medical science as a way of alleviating suffering, not as a way of making profits, and would retire regularly for prayer. He also attended Mass daily, and would sometimes use a patient's faith, as well as the sacraments, in his treatments. Moscati also refused to charge the poor for their treatment, and was known to sometimes send a patient home with a prescription and a 50-lira note in an envelope. . It was claimed even before his death that Moscati was a miracle-worker; some said that he could accurately diagnose and prescribe for any patient merely by hearing a list of his symptoms, and that he was responsible for impossible cures. Reports of his good works continued well after his death, with further reports that he interceded in impossible cases. Consequently, he was beatified by Pope Paul VI on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church on 16 November 1975. Moscati was canonized on 25 October 1987, by Pope John Paul II. His canonization miracle involved the case of a young ironworker dying of leukemia. The young man's mother dreamed of a doctor wearing a white coat, whom she identified as Moscati when shown a photograph. Not long after this, her son went into remission and returned to work. . Moscati was the first modern doctor to be canonized; his feast day is 16 November. . . #CatholicConnect #MedicalTalks #Catholic #Catholicism #CatholicDoctor #Love #Jesus #JesusChrist #Faith #Serve #HumanDignity #WorksofMercy #God #InGodWeTrust #Saints #Doctors #MedicalField https://www.instagram.com/p/B4QVS9SlkJZ/?igshid=gnx0563moaut

The heart or the pump of the body consists of two ventricles and two atria supplied by the Right and Left coronary arteries which are visible in the photo. Any transient or complete obstruction within the vessels will lead to angina or MI (Myocardial infarction) respectively. The obstruction is usually what is known as an atheroma or plaque composed primarily of fatty cells. What's interesting is that these atheroma start developing within our vessels as soon as teenage and continue till death, so a variety of factors will either aggravate or slow down the process resulting in angina/MI. How adorable is lil Riley? 😍😊💟 _______________________ Riley Johnson smiled for the first time following cleft palate correction surgery. Riley was born without a fully developed nose, mouth and top lip. The middle portion of her gum pushed under the front portion of her mouth leaving her with no roof to her mouth and significant gaps in her lips and gums. Sadly, these features failed to form in the womb, as a result, Riley struggled to eat, pronounce certain letters and would often drool. At 7 months old, she had a successful surgery to reattach the skin from under her lip and nose, giving her the ability to smile and pronounce the letter “m” for the first time! 😍 ____________________________ #plasticsurgerybeforeandafter #medicaltalks #plasticsurgeryinstagram #plasticsurgerycontentnetwork #surgeonswhospecialize #medicalstudent #instagramplasticsurgery #yourbodyyourchoice #medicalpedia #medstudent #surgeryresults #medschool #cleftpalate #cleftpalatesurgery #cleft https://www.instagram.com/p/BuU9TH2IdYp/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1n4o9e3o31fqg

A Peanut Lodged Inside a Child's Trachea. This photo is a cross section of the lungs of a small child who died of suffocation, and provides a sobering example of how much of a hazard choking is for young children. ⠀ ⠀ Via @medicaltalks
