Ok so I've been annoyed about this for fucking ages, so now I'm going to complain about it. This isn't prompted by some ask sent in or whatever I've just decided that Today's The Day.

There's been a lot of talk about the difference between fictionkins and fictives on here; a lot of "how can I tell if I'm a fictionkin or if we have a fictive", and "this character is a fictionkin'type but they might be a fictive/I'm not sure if they're a fictive/I might be a fictive", etc. And there's been a not-insubstantial amount of people responding to that in a way that we feel is pretty close-minded. So we're going to complain about it now.

There is a lot of responses to those kinds of questions and thoughts that are all just "There's actually a huge difference between the two and you'd know right away". This is incredibly fucking annoying to us, as a system with a lot of fictionkintypes. This may shock you, but there's a nuance to this, which nobody seems to care about.

For certain people, the difference between a fictionkintype and a fictive could be really clear, and they'd immediately know "Oh okay we have a new John Egbert fictive, neat" and "One of us is a fictionkin of N from Pokémon". The problem is though that for a lot of people (ourselves included), it's not that clear at /all/. For example, we have previously had a lot of issues trying to figure out where the line between kintype and fictive was drawn, due to the way we function. We're very homogenous, in a lot of ways, for a lot of reasons. Ergo, sometimes, it'll take days, if not WEEKS, of deliberation to figure out who is what.

People also seem to forget that terms exist that, obviously, point to this not being nearly as clear-cut an issue as it's thought of. Fableing, for one, being an identity which / someone who is both a fictive and a fictionkin of a particular character at the same time. Or kinforms (a kintype-turned-fictive), or Kin systems (https://pluralpedia.org/w/Kin_System), or median systems or monoconscious systems. Etc. If it was as simple to figure out as it's portrayed; these terms wouldn't be there to use, I feel like. Am I making sense so far?

And while we're here; not the biggest fan of how. Medicalist, I guess, the responses tend to feel. Gesturing at the close-mindedness I mentioned. The very black-and-white view on it gives off Bad Vibes, we'll say. Not a fan.

1) unless you're a Tibetan Buddhist monk, you are not/do not have a tulpa. Tulpamancy is a specific closed practice that belongs to and isn't shared outside of a very specific ethnic and religious group. 1. "Tulpamancy"

"Tulpamancy" was coined in 2009. While sharing an etymology with the Tibetan Buddhist sprul-pa, there is no Tibetan or Buddhist practice that has EVER EXISTED called "tulpamancy".

And even for the sprul-pa, I've never heard a valid source claim the practice can only be done by "monks."

Also not fake. At least according to the psychologists who are investigating the practice, and believe it to be a real psychological phenomenon. But surely you know more than psychiatry professors. 🙄

2. No Evidence You Can Create a Dissociative Identity

I have NEVER seen a scientist claim you can't create a "dissociative identity" or any synonym thereof without a dissociative disorder. The closest any doctor has come to accusing endogenic systems of a factitious disorder was in the McLean Hospital video, which was infamously so shameful that the hospital took it down!

Here is what I have seen...

The ICD-11, created by the World Health Organization, states you can have multiple "distinct personality states" without a dissociative disorder.

Transgender Mental Health, published by the American Psychiatric Association, states that you can be plural without trauma or a disorder.

The creators of the Theory of Structural Dissociation have mentioned that mediumship and hypnosis may result in "self-conscious" "dissociative parts of the personality."

The science is overwhelmingly in favor of endogenic systems to the point where it's not even a contest.

3. Comparisons

While no comparison is exact, endogenic systems are discriminated against whether intentionally created or not. And even as a tulpa, I was only somewhat intentionally created.

The discrimination and pluralphobia systems face is very real. And there are huge overlaps in pluralphobia and transphobia.

Both face misgendering and people intentionally calling them by names they don't identify with. Both experiences are falsely regarded as things that can only be mental illnesses, and have medicalist branches within those communities who engage in sending hate to those who don't identify their experiences as a disorder.

4. "Get help"

Always worth reminding people that this phrase is just another way of calling people crazy, insane, lunatics, etc. It's an inherently ableist term designed to silence people for perceived neurodivergencies.

My POV: How being trans actually feels

Well I found out through a mental breakdown and then everything clicked, when my brain found out what I've been missing. I was 15 at the time I found out but it's genuinely a feeling to have. To stare at yourself and your own body kind of trapped there, knowing how truly uncanny it is and how wrong it feels to be in it. That's gender dysphoria.

Some trans people may not experience gender dysphoria but are well aware of their gender identity, and that's okay (Fuck off trans-medicalists). Some trans people probably knew longer than I did or have been insisting on their gender since early childhood. The experience of having a separate gender than the gender or assigned at birth can be completely different for everyone, some could have really bad depressive episodes from dysphoria while others might not mind it, heck I forgot I was even trans until someone reminded me of my agab oof.

To feel close with our preferred gender sometimes we dress differently, change our bodies, use different hair, or use preferred names and pronouns. You can also not use any of this and still identify under trans or the trans umbrella that's completely fine as long as you're aware of your identity.

Also keep in mind that trans people don't owe anyone masculinity or femininity or androgyny and the assumption alone that they do is dumb lol. There are also some experiences that trans people have had to hide for years due to many reasons and some who don't know it yet (we call them eggs). That's the trans experience!

The latter, but let me explain my stance a bit further than that.

I'm an individual who realized they were part of a plural system long before "origin discourse" was even a blip on my Tumblr or LiveJournal radar. I'm also someone from a family lucky enough where one of my parents went to college, specifically getting a Master's degree in Psychology, and who is with a spouse currently getting a PhD in Psychology. I have had the opportunity to speak on behalf of my multiplicity not only to practicing clinicians, but also to academics in the field of psychology and psychiatry. I have specific records of our experiences of multiplicity dating back to, at the latest, when we were a pre-teen, but with mountains of anecdotal evidence and more one-off writings pointing to our existence prior to that.

In short, I am part of a system. I can say that with the utmost confidence, based on both my own internal experiences and external understandings.

But you know what?

I should not have to rely on external understandings to justify my own fucking existence as an individual, and my systemmates' existences as individuals. Our existence should not rely on the nebulous, faulty, potentially biased understandings of outsiders in order to be "justified," to be "acknowledged."

In the same way people demand of me if I have kissed both men and women as a bisexual, and in the same way people demand to know if I have had "the surgery" to count as transgender, and in the same way people demand to know what occurred in our late teens to cause us to have PTSD and if it "really counts" when compared to atrocities like war that others have suffered PTSD for-- none of these factors are anyone else's fucking business. No one has a right to lay judgement down upon me, my experiences, and my identity based on the things I do or don't do, have done or didn't, will do or won't.

I'm an advocate for the radical idea that systems exist. Period, end of sentence. That systems exist, and that systems have a right to exist, in whatever messy, bizarre, or confusing way they do or do not choose to exist in. That we have just as much as right to personhood and complex understandings of self as any singlet, and that we do not need to grovel and beg just for the meager scraps of acceptance and individual acknowledgement that singlets and certain system medicalists deign to toss to us. We deserve to exist our lives even in ways that may seem difficult-to-understand both to other systems and to singlets alike; whether you see yourself as a broken plate metaphor, or you see yourself as multiple planted seeds. Whether you're several animals that fell into a human body, or whether you're aspects of the same underlying human consciousness. Whatever the details of your existence, it does not matter to limit your worth: I firmly believe that systems exist, full stop. No added qualifiers, no necessary narratives that individuals must fit into, nothing; I support system freedom to exist.
