(slight rant incoming, tw for fatmisia, medical abuse (ig?), and that one medical term - "morbid - o word")
fat culture is reading your medical records to find that doctors are calling you "morbidly obese". even though you have NO symptoms caused by your weight (despite the attempts to gaslight you otherwise) and you were not even there to talk to the doctor about anything remotely related to your weight. I am physically disabled and it's UNRELATED! all of my symptoms are of other things!!! what the legitimate fuck.

I think it's important to note that this isn't just transmisia, it's fatmisia as well. They're deadly on their own, but combined it's even worse.
Hey PLEASE be wary of Dr. Gallagher and spread the word. Rylan (testosteronejew on Twitter) got top surgery from her in August. Here's the thread he wrote about his horrific experience.
He had severe complications that were completely dismissed by Dr. Gallagher. She kept telling him everything was fine, that it was because of his weight, and made a joke about him "menstruating" as he was bleeding from a torn incision. When he was rushed to the ER weeks later, he had over half a foot of dead tissue removed. He could have died from the infection (that she blatantly denied he had).
And in Rylan's own words, "My only desire is to keep our community safe. There are so many trustworthy top surgeons in the world. One of them saved my life. Transition is a beautiful process and we deserve safe access to it. I do not regret top surgery. I regret choosing Dr. Gallagher as my surgeon."

non-ableist alternatives to "phobia" when referring to oppression
-misia: examples: JKR is transmisic. they're struggling with internalised fatmisia. "-misia" comes from the greek word for hate and it's already used in other oppression terms like misogyny. out of all the options, it's the most similar one to "-phobia" grammatically. there is no agreed upon noun for someone who is
-misic, though i have seen -miser,
-misist and simply -misic used for that. examples: JKR is a transmiser. transmisics are having a go under my youtube shorts. some transmisist insulted me.
anti-: examples: anti-aceness is detrimental to aces' mental health. transmedicalism is inherently anti-nonbinary. "anti-" means "against" and it's already commonly used when it comes to lawmaking, so it's intuitive. there is, however, no noun to refer to someone who is anti-.
-antagonism: examples:
amatonormativity is aro-antagonistic. bi-antagonism is still common in queer spaces. the weight loss industry is full of fat-antagonists.
"antagonism" refers to hatred and hostility.
-negativity: examples: using "gay" as an insult is homonegative. i have encountered transnegativity in the medical field. this suffix is pretty self-explanatory. it also complements "-positivity" which is often used to describe affirmation of a marginalised group. there isn't really a noun to refer to someone who is -negative, but you could just say "-negatives".
example: transnegatives are ruining our community.
-hostility: examples: transhostility is on the rise. expecting fat people to hide our bodies is fathostile.
another self-explanatory one, and another one without a noun to call -hostile people, but once again, you can just use the adjective as a noun. example: there were a lot of homohostiles at my school.
-hate: examples: IGM is a manifestation of intersex-hate. pan-haters think bi is the only valid label for multi-attraction.
this is another very straight-forward one, although there isn't really an adjective to refer to something or someone who exhibits -hate. maybe
-hating or -hateful.
examples: banning transition for minors is trans-hateful. TERFs are trans-hating misogynists.
-ism: "-ism" as a suffix for oppression is already known from terms like ableism, racism, classism or sexism.
a short list of -isms:
if something is anti-gay, it is heterosexist.
if something is anti-bi/mspec, it is monosexist.
if something is anti-trans, it is cissexist.
if something is anti-ace/aro, it is allosexist.
if something is anti-intersex, it is intersexist or perisexist.
if something is anti-nonbinary, it is exorsexist.
if something is anti-fat, it is sizeist.
there are many ways to not be ableist. choose one.

some medical professionals will really be surprised or even weirdly disappointed if you're fat but "in normal range" in terms of medical tests and it's fucked up
and to be clear, being considered "unhealthy" or dealing with any of these conditions is not a Bad thing. no less deserving of quality and shame-free medical care. that "I'm fat but I'm a Good Fat unlike those Bad Fats" concept is bullshit.
I'm talking just about how some medical professionals will act in real-time if they don't have The Results to shame you over being fat with
"oh. your blood pressure is actually fine? hm. well let's double check and make sure."
"when you mentioned fatigue we considered diabetes, but everything actually came back Normal. so... we had to check for other possibilities. your vitamin d is a bit low, but it's winter so that's probably a factor."
"I wondered if your digestion issues were actually about dietary problems, but the inflammation has gone down significantly since you started taking (med) for your anxiety. I guess that might've actually played a role in it. oh, did you mention that last time? hm. are you sure you didn't change your eating habits at all?"
"sorryyyy! real quick before you go, can I check your blood pressure one more time? just to make sure we read it correctly! :D :D :D"
"your cholesterol levels are actually in normal range. so that's nice for you."
"we DEFINITELY checked on your thyroid, but everything came back Normal. seems like you should be fine"
I've noticed it since childhood and have talked to/read about others who experience similar shit. why you acting like I cheated and now you wanna take your ball and go home? did I ruin the "Fries Destroy Lives" dance number you had prepared? it's fucking weird

Oh hey, this post exists for me again. It was just completely gone for a long time, not on my blog and not in search, and I got a note on it today for the first time in forever.
I love the comment that says BMI = Bullshit Made-up Index
I stand by what I said in 2018. Though today I will not use the term fatmisia, it's fatphobia. It's a hatred of fat people.
I want to add that the idea of health is also a scam, a forever moving goalpost you cannot possibly reach. Fat people exist in healthy and unhealthy bodies and it's fine - leave us alone about it. Health doesn't justify your body, and illness or disability doesn't justify your hate.
The BMI is bullshit because it exists to further hate and exclusion of fat people. Period. Not because it hurts some thin people too.
Calories and weights and formulas and tracking, all the numbers and ratios, it's all bullshit. You really don't have to think about this stuff. Free yourself. I hope some of you can use this and get help for your ED or disordered eating. But I am a fat activist, and these things hurt fat people the most. We are the intended targets. So I do this for us. Fat people must be centered in this conversation.
Oh, and the very word ob*se is a slur. Do not use.
Here's an updated link to the Riots Not Diets piece, right here on Tumblr
The ok2befat playlist is still recommended.
In addition, books:
Dr Sabrina Strings - Fearing the Black Body, the racial origins of fatphobia
Da'Shaun Harrison - Belly of the Beast
Shadow on a Tightrope (one of the earliest collections of fat activist writing, still in print, containing the fat liberation manifesto and other personal stories)
do you guys wanna see how bs ‘’’bmi’’’ is?
let’s start with a few pictures of my body shall we
(please ignore messy room i’m in the process of packing)
okay so that’s the body of someone that eats healthy, literally my fave food is broccoli, and i work out 5 days a week, you’d think i’m at ‘’’healthy weight’’’’ right?????
BITCH NOPE
that bitch telling me to eat 1500 - 1900 calories a day are you fucking joking??? that’s fucking starving myself and i’m not doing that. fuck you.

@whetstonefires -misia is a suffix someone on Twitter proposed as an alternative to -phobia. Can’t remember details, something about how using the word homophobia etc was making light of people with actual fears of things.
hmmmm that is a valid issue for sure, i’ve disliked -phobia being appropriated to label various bigotries when phobias are a serious medical issue, and i guess really you can slap a voiced consonant on at the end of basically any word; ‘fatmisia’ is totally pronounceable.
unfortunately you have to get people really used to a pseudo-greek suffix before fusing it with common words from a different language family stops sounding Very Silly Indeed so this neologism is going to have a hard launch.

“I was ‘overweight and would look weird after surgery if my stomach was bigger than my chest.’ Doctor’s words.” Johnny, a thoughtful trans man who was kind enough to answer my questions, continues, “it seems like a very thinly veiled ‘you won’t be attractive enough for us to proudly call you our patient.’”
Fat transgender people face significant barriers to medical transition, including HRT and GRS, often in the form of surgeons who refuse to work on them, or doctors who feel they won’t make “proper” men and women. For this reason, transgender people have the highest rates of eating disorders, even higher than cishet women, yet another life-threatening danger.

This button is here to protest some major forms of oppression and discrimination that exist today: classism, racism, ableism, transmisia, homomisia, islamomisia, fatmisia, misogyny, ageism, bigotry, xenomisia, and antisemitism.⠀⠀ ⠀
Terms like “homophobia” using “phobia” is a misappropriation of medical terminology, equating the prejudice against marginalised people to legitimate illnesses. Therefore some people have started using "-misia" (meaning hate, rather than fear) or "-antagonism" instead.⠀ ⠀
There are so many groups that face discrimination, many of which are often forgotten or worse in our attempts at activism. I super recommend you acquaint yourself with these different forms of oppression/discrimination and reflect what you can do to avoid those behaviours and to fight them in the future! We all have some sort of privilege, so let's listen to each other and do our best. 💜✨⠀
[Image description: Three large buttons are laid out onto colourful paper. The buttons read "Dismantle oppression" in big letters. Between those two words different forms of oppression as mentioned above are listed.]

Fat culture is having to get a new PCP because the old one COMPLETELY ignored you saying "hey I have no appetite, don't eat enough, and am nauseous all the time contributing to me not eating enough" and her going "I want you to lose weight. I'd normally prescribe a weight loss drug but you clearly don't need that. And your BMI says you're not malnourished"
Meanwhile you're new PCP goes "yeah your body went into starvation mode. You're clearly malnourished. Let's see how we can help you."

NON-ABLEIST ALTERNATIVES TO "PHOBIA" WHEN REFERRING TO OPPRESSION
this post is NOT here for a "debate" on whether calling oppression a "phobia" is ableist or not (it is) and "debate" and ableism apology will be blocked. this is a post of the many non-ableist options there are to talk about oppression. choose one.
-MISIA
examples: JKR is transmisic. they're struggling with internalised fatmisia.
"-misia" comes from the greek word for hate and it's already used in other oppression terms like misogyny. out of all the options, it's the most similar one to "-phobia" grammatically. there is no agreed upon noun for someone who is -misic, though i have seen -miser, -misist and simply -misic used for that.
examples: JKR is a transmiser. transmisics are having a go under my youtube shorts. some transmisist insulted me.
ANTI-
examples: anti-aceness is detrimental to aces' mental health. transmedicalism is inherently anti-nonbinary.
"anti-" means "against" and it's already commonly used when it comes to lawmaking, so it's intuitive. there is, however, no noun to refer to someone who is anti-.
-ANTAGONISM
examples: amatonormativity is aro-antagonistic. bi-antagonism is still common in queer spaces. the weight loss industry is full of fat-antagonists.
"antagonism" refers to hatred and hostility.
-NEGATIVITY
examples: using "gay" as an insult is homonegative. i have encountered transnegativity in the medical field.
this suffix is pretty self-explanatory. it also complements "-positivity" which is often used to describe affirmation of a marginalised group. there isn't really a noun to refer to someone who is -negative, but you could just say "-negatives".
example: transnegatives are ruining our community.
-HOSTILITY

another self-explanatory one, and another one without a noun to call -hostile people, but once again, you can just use the adjective as a noun. example: there were a lot of homohostiles at my school.
-HATE
examples: IGM is a manifestation of intersex-hate. pan-haters think bi is the only valid label for multi-attraction.
this is another very straight-forward one, although there isn't really an adjective to refer to something or someone who exhibits -hate. maybe -hating or -hateful.
examples: banning transition for minors is trans-hateful. TERFs are trans-hating misogynists.
-ISM
"-ism" as a suffix for oppression is already known from terms like ableism, racism, classism or sexism.
a list of "-ism" terms:
if something is anti-gay, it is heterosexist.
if something is anti-bi/mspec, it is monosexist.
if something is anti-trans, it is cissexist.
if something is anti-ace/aro, it is allosexist.
if something is anti-intersex, it is intersexist or perisexist.
if something is anti-nonbinary, it is exorsexist.
if something is anti-fat, it is sizeist.
no excuses for ableism.

on a more serious note, the barriers in the way of people with PCOS getting potentially life-saving surgery, the barriers put in place by a medical system that's supposed to save lives -- it's fucked.
one of my childhood nannies has PCOS, she's only about in her 40s~50s, and she had two strokes sometime in the past few years. when she had her most recent child, she had to be hospitalized in ICU after giving birth. all could have been prevented if not for the ableism, fatmisia, and misogyny of the medical industry.
PCOS is fun b/c one moment you'll feel semi okay, & then you'll see ur reflection & its shocking display of pale, clammy skin & sunken eyes, and then it is time to go sit down and rest for a while lol

fat undiagnosed disabled culture is "it's your weight" and tests that try to prove that it's your weight, but fail because your weight isn't causing any of it.
why do doctors. =.=
