Jurassica: A beginners field guide by Lance Balchin
Tumblr media
Age Recommendation: Tween and up Art Style: Computer generated. Topic/ Theme: Lowkey evolution, conservation, creativity Setting: Earth circa 2250
Rating: 5/5
As with Aquatica, Jurassica builds on the lore Balchin created in Mechanica.  Though I think this is the first time we get a succinct definition of Mechanica "a fast-evolving robotic life form originating from rogue military drones and escaped robotic animals during the early 23rd century.". In the case of Jurassica Liberty Crisp plays a role, still as something of an advocate for peace. though she faced down a hoard of the Triceratops Horridus, only saved by the fast-thinking of Bert. Chen Su the father of Mechanica makes something of a reappearance, with Jurassica being the brainchild of and created by his granddaughter Vivian. Where the Mechanica were pets, the Aquatica were hybrids, the Jurassica were weapons. Weapons created by the militia to defend what was left of the human race. So these are the saviours of society, the opposition so to speak of the Mechanica and Aquatica. That shows in their design and their stories.
I'm going, to be honest, the lore in this I want to say series (even if Balchin doesn't identify it as such) is what keeps me coming back. I am an adult and I'm honestly not certain who the intended audience is. I only tag it tween because there is too much text for a younger audience, at least for my mind and there is some cursive script. The Jurassica are really cleverly drawn feels like more so than previous books you can see the detailing on the wires holding them together and working. My favoured design is the Pteranodon Longiceps, the wings are stunning not only as a design choice but in the execution. There is a great variety in the designs cleverly I think the historic herbivore is not an attacking Jurassica it is a refueler. The Jurassica are well named. Readers are given the formal name you then get a type number, this appears to be a version/model more than a designation. As they were created by the government, specifically the military this really does make sense.
I really like these books. I like their creativity, their message and the way they can each be read stand alone but feel much more complete read together. I appreciate that there is a strong female presence in them. Vivian and Liberty almost counterbalance each other, it would have been easy to make at least one of them male.

Apparently there was a Maldad Mechnica update recently today, do you happen to know any of the specifics of what they added?
Someone from our discord played the game and not much changed, they added a few missions and put the Halloween and Xmas themes together. Now they change depending on what hat you wear. Here’s the link if anyone wants to play! You need a proxy or a VPN though to access the mx CN site.

Proximal Orbits I: What Argument Remains?
Here’s the thing. How do you know if you can kill an enemy? You try. If I have a gun and there’s an Acolyte charging me - I’m going to shoot at it. The bullets are going to crack its chitin and leave it sprawled on the ground.
There’s a data point. Bullets kill hive. Okay.
Now there’s a Cabal phalanx in my way. I shoot at it. The bullets bounce off.
Data point two. Bullets don’t always kill Cabal.
You use the tools at hand. Sometimes the tools are warsats dropping kinetic impactors onto targets in the Martian dustpan. Sometimes the tools are hard light and encapsulated solar energy.
Sometimes the tools are a piece of rebar, bent around a concrete wedge.
Whatever gets the job done, right?
Warlocks like to be efficient. How can I kill the enemy in the least expenditure of Light and time? What applications of void light can coax the optimal amount of deaths? Shall we bundle it into an enormous, crude bomb? Maybe pulse it from our bodies like a lightning rod? How about solar light? Arc?
What can we use to kill the foes of the Last City before they can kill us?
It’s not a bad position.
Here’s the thing.
You’re not always going to have that void light. You’re not always going to have an IKELOS-forged weapon. You’re not always going to be able to fall back on Tex Mechnica, or Omolon. When your sword breaks, when your guns jam, when there’s nothing left, what do you have?
What argument can you posit against the encroaching darkness when all your trappings are torn away?
There’s just you.
There’s just me.
Against the dark.
When I woke under the ruins of the tower, with Cabal in the streets and in the buildings and in the sky, there was nothing left.
When I was cornered in a drain by a pack of war beasts, what did I have? Not my Light. Not my Ghost. Not my fireteam, or my friends, or the Vanguard.
I had me.
And I had my fists.
I left the war beasts broken behind me.
When the Cabal came after me, again and again, I left them broken in the snow. Faces broken, armor cracked, blood spattered.
I couldn’t open my left fist when I found the farm. The bones were all mashed and the cold had started to freeze the clotted blood. There was plasteel mixed with ivory chunks in the ruin.
Right hand wasn’t much better. Shaxx practically wired a gun into my grip when I said I was going after the Shard.
So here’s the thing.
You can keep testing your loadouts. You can keep finding fancy new abilities.
I’ll keep testing my foes against the one thing that will never leave me.
When it all is pared away, I’ll know what I can face. I’ll know what I can do.
I can punch back.

Taking part in the Tabletop Mentorship Program!
A few days ago, I was just playing with some fruit seeds lying down on my table, and a new game mechanic came into being. I made a quick paper prototype of it and played with my mom, which obviously failed right after a few moves. It was just a mechnica no goal, defined rules or any interaction pattern. It was just a seed for a potential game, at least I thought so :P. But game design is hard and everytime I sit with a prototype, my mind goes blind, and I struggle to find a way to make it work. It is one of those blank canvas feeling, where you are just staring at it for hours with no idea of what movement, and you wonder what you are doing with your life and why the canvas is not talking to you. To avoid this feeling,  I left the idea and put it in my to do list along with all other babies waiting to see a light of the day. I have not been working fulltime on any other thing, so I though of utilizing the time to learn new things and slowly make progress on at least one game so that I could have something playable by the end of this year which would mean now or later I will have to go through that feeling. I had a few ideas for a twine game, and a couple of ideas for video and board game out of which I wanted to focus on one or two to work on. Later a few months later, I saw a tweet about Tabletop Mentorship Program, which is a three month long one-on-one engagement platform where the experts in the industry share their knowledge, resources, experience, and guidance with another member of the community. I thought this could be a good push for me to be desciplined and work on one game at a time progressively and also probably will make it little easy to handle the blank canvas feeling if I’m working with someone more expereinced in this field, otherwise it gets really dificult to move things all by yourself, especially game design. So, I applied as a mentee, and was selected by Jeffrey Allers who is my now mentor for the course of this program.  In our first meeting, I’d suggested four ideas out of which we had to take one or two to develop further. Jeff provided me his feedback on all the four ideas, and he chose the same idea which I’d kept aside after a failed test with my mom. It was also because this idea was comparitively clear and easy to prototype in this short time, other ideas were theme based and would require a subject research, and were also very vague at this point. The program started in mid September and in last three weeks I’ve been working on and off on my game. We meet twice a month for a discussion and I regularly update Jeff over mail on the game progress. Jeff is a wonderful person with many years of expereince designing board and card games, he is helping me in the design and playtest my games. I hope to get a playable game by the end of these three months and perhaps some confidance to be able to make and publish my own games. In the next few posts, I will be writing about the game design process and my struggles along the way. @banbutterjam

Well I meant it as such.

That girl. She's very protective of her team. They call themselves the Night Angels. They're like a team of superheroes.

Ah, yes.
*She nods.*

Ah, that should be them. I'll go welcome them!
Thanks Jade, and bring Lavender with you!
That was the plan.
*You're greeted by a very excited Lavender and Jade, in a very nice looking tuxido.*
