I woke up this morning and noticed something new in the mirror. My eyebags, puffy and prominent, had grown a life of their own. It wasn’t clear how long they had been alive. It was as if they had their own nine to five, dinner at six, at least six hundred you owe this year. I was beginning to suspect I did not know myself, because I had no recollection of what they had been through. Have I at last reached the conclusion of what it means to “grow up”? 

Interior: in my bed. In my mind, in the abstract, it is summer. The mourning dove and cicada drone coordinate a song that keeps me wide awake. In my body, in the concrete, it is winter. The temperature is harsh and there is little life to be found here. I wrap my blanket tighter around me. Fortunately, the season makes no difference to me; it is in my nature to bargain and plead for one more hour, no matter where the sun makes the throne in the sky. That damned thing, always smugly watching.

If I could send off my limbs to do the dirty work, I would have one hand grab the coffee, and the other my daily multi-vitamins. The feet can go off wherever they please purely because they tend to bother me. But the factory prefers us to come as we are: whole. So I don’t.

ok so basically one day people were talking about how stede just stares off into space when he's upset, and then I wrote this post:

And then I drew this:

and these themes around how stede deals, or really doesn't deal, with his trauma, as well as this haunting line of dialogue I can hear so clearly in his father's voice just wouldn't leave my head and I had to write a fic about it. I think there's also just been a tidal wave of "ed processing his trauma post s2" fics which are all amazing and I love them, but I hadn't really seen any fics about stede processing his trauma post s2. like dude was really just holding it together the entire time absolutely thanklessly. HE THOUGHT ED WAS DEAD FOR LIKE HALF OF 2x03 and he doesn't curl up into a ball and cry, he rescues everyone and takes back the revenge!!! he just! deals! with! it!! because boys don't cry and he's a little rich boy who never suffered so he doesn't even have the right to cry.

season 2 just lowkey ignored a lot of his issues imo. we get to see all of ed's issues and even all of izzy's issues front and center, but stede doesn't get to have a breakdown. the best he gets is crying in a wet alleyway in 2x01. I need that man to recognize his trauma and heal goddammit!!
