I swear when I picked this weekend's #MealsInBowls I didn't realize they all had super finicky toppings. Delicious nonetheless, lunch was caramelized onion soup with sourdough croutons, sage brown butter, lemon zest, and crispy fried sage leaves.

Tonight's #MealsInBowls was all about the fixins: Thai rice noodles with ground chicken and green beans, topped with deep fried shallots and garlic, peanuts, cilantro, green onions, and Sriracha.

Cool Weather Meals In Bowls
I’ve been making a lot of meals in bowls this fall. So much so that I’ve actually been lusting after certain ceramic bowls in which to display said meals. But for now, the two trusty ones I do have will have to do.
Clockwise from top left, this is:
1. a beet/raspberry/vanilla smoothie bowl (with pomagranate seeds, bee pollen, maple coconut flakes, chia seeds, and cacao nibs)
2. an herbal pho-inspired noodle bowl (with pea shoots, toasted sesame seeds, tofu, green onions, a mess o'veggies, and soba)
3. a kale salad with pine nuts, currants (I used cranberries), and parmesan
4. some super cereal (toasted buckwheat, millet, quinoa, amaranth, sunflower seeds, and chia seeds) with raisins, maple coconut flakes, cacao nibs, and almond butter
You may notice, if you follow any of those recipe links, that I an an ENORMOUS fan of Sarah Britton at My New Roots. I want to make nearly everything she posts and that is in her beautiful cookbook. I am not meat, dairy, or (entirely) gluten-free, but I enjoy exploring different ways of cooking and think that we could all benefit from more plants in our lives. Plus, I have pretty strict personal standards when it comes to animal products in particular...so sometimes it’s just easier to find organic kale than it is to hunt down a locally raised, 100% grass fed piece of beef.
I’m never really sure what to say in a restaurant or someone’s home when, upon opting for a gluten-free option, they naturally ask “Are you avoiding gluten?” My standard answer of “Sometimes...um...not really...” never left me feeling particularly satisfied. I don’t have a gluten allergy or well-defined intolerance, so I finally realized the other day that I’m not so much avoiding wheat as I am seeking to include other grains. When I cook with tofu I am definitely not seeking to replace meat but am instead just excited to experience different flavors and textures. I love bacon, but feel like relying on that + a smothering of cheese on everything is cheating. Good cooks constantly challenge themselves and explore weird ingredients, and so in my constant pursuit of that I’ll continue to test out kelp noodles and cashew cream. In between healthy doses of bacon and cheese, natch.
