Dexlab Multiverse talk

One thing that has been rattling around my head for years is the idea of all these different possible futures for the characters, since time tomfoolery happens pretty often in the show.

I don't think that Ego Trip would be the default future, especially given how society changed in the years following the show (god, that sounds so dry and boring lmao). But you get what I mean, there was a lot of stuff that happened since the early 2000s that no one could predict, not like Ego Trip exists in anything like our world now to begin with though. I just think Dexter being turned into a broken shell of a man is sad tbh and I don't like to think of it as the default because I am a delicate little flower, I suppose. I think it was just meant to be one of those Cool Alternate Future movies. With Dexter, I think he would probably only change drastically in a very specific environment where bad stuff happened to him, I don't know if he'd change all that much growing up 'normally'. Because he has that ASD thing of seeming very old for your age but also more innocent than his peers (possibly because he seems to have skipped grades), I'm applying my experiences growing up. You usually don't change that dichotomy growing up, I would imagine he still acts simultaneously like a grumpy old man and like an exciteable kid at times. Obviously his personality would evolve, and there's this weird thing of the transition from 'child genius' to just 'genius' is seen as a downgrade by most people. Based on my own brother, who always heavily identified with Dexter, he tends to tackle all problems in a similar way even if it's a square-peg-round-hole situation. He knows what he's good at and focuses on that and tunes out pretty much anything else. So unless there's an outside force at play really pushing Dexter in one direction, I see him being pretty single-minded about what goals he wants to pursue. For the other characters, I think we have a bit more wiggle room. Dee Dee does have hyperfocuses, clearly, but a few at once. I don't think she could become a ballerina professionally unless she stops growing immediately because you have to be really short to be one. She could be another type of dancer though, she could go on Broadway. She could be an artist, or a writer because she's talented at a lot of creative ventures. If she was a writer, I would have to imagine she writes fantasy books for kids, because that feels very Dee Dee. In my timeline that I did, I made her a child psychologist because she was always really empathetic (well, when the writing decided that she was lol) and philosophical. As well as some other stuff I'll explain in some other post, but I think Play Therapy would be a really good fit for her. Another factor that could change things is does she go on ADHD medication? How does she deal with college? Does she find it overwhelming or does she dive right in? Or both? I personally see her being friends with Bubbles and Goo from Foster's Home for Imaginary friends, because Mee Mee and Lee Lee remind me of those friends you had as a kid that were kind of mean to you, you know? I would always end up with 'friends' like that and I was too nice or too oblivious to do anything about it. Those friendships don't usually have too much staying power so it would be nice if she got to connect with people with similar interests! She could also become a scientist herself, something like Ecology could really be her thing. Some people HC that in the Ego Trip universe, the bad future was kickstarted by her dying young.

My most marked characteristic? I mean, that would depend on who I'm around I'm being honest. My therapist points out my intelligence, resilience, and kindness a lot. My younger brother loves to point out my yellow teeth and the fact that I'm fat A LOT (even though he has no room to talk considering he still looks like Jack Skellington with a skin suit on at 19 years old and teeth that are WORSE than mine). My dad always points out my hyper-empathy, an aspect of myself that I have never had any control over, in the most condescending ways possible ("You whiner!" "You need to learn to let what I did to you shit go!" "You let things get to you too easily!" You know, shit like that.) My mother always feels the urge and need to point out my body hair whenever she sees that I haven't shaved in a while, you know, because goodness forbid a woman doesn't shave for a long period of time 🙄. Honestly, it's interesting to me that a lot of the characteristics that have been pointed out to me over the years are direct results of me being a formerly undiagnosed autistic girl who was never taught basic self-care and hygiene and with deep rooted trauma that I will probably never fully heal from.

Would you like the summarized version or my entire scroll that circles the earth 5 times over? Right now, the main things I am really hard on myself for is the fact that I couldn't even finish college, yet my younger sister with ADHD could get her bachelor's degree in psychology, nor can I find a job to at least contribute monetarily to my living situation. It also doesn't help that my hypocrite deadbeat father who refuses to apply his own "advice" to his own life keeps fostering this feeling within me by reminding me and my younger brother (who college also didn't work for and is also ADHD) that we "better figure out what we want to do," and "should look at trade school if we don't want to go back to college," you know, because trades aren't an oversaturated field BECAUSE of people like him giving advice like that. My dad doesn't even have, nor does he even want to get, his G.E.D and he's preaching "facts" at me and my brother like he FUCKING KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT! AHHHHHHHHHHH! I'm also hard on myself for struggling with something as simple as starting a task, or struggling to do tasks that I KNOW I can do normally, but for some reason my brain and body disconnect from each other, like Bluetooth headphones that are too far away from the phone their connected to, and then I feel fucking stupid because I either forget how I was taught to do it OR I'll stop mid-task and stare into the ether wondering what the fuck I'm doing. I'm also exhausted constantly even though most days I barely do anything, unless you count having anxious and existential dread thoughts, as well as most definitely having autistic burnout, as extraneous activities. I've been really hard on myself for that lately too.

Not going to lie, I don't remember ever crying while watching a movie in the theater, but I KNOW that I've cried while watching movies at home. My most recent movie cry was while watching the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie when Rocket's having his own moment of "dying character meeting his dead friend/relative/love interest again after a long time in a white void and the dead person tells the dying character that it's not their time to go yet." Like, I KNEW it was going to happen, but it still had me crying like a baby FOR REAL. 😭😭😭

AU Overview

Since I have a couple started, not everything posted, and stuff that's still just in my head, I needed to write this overview, to have it all together.

Flatmates AU | Veteran Geralt, musician Jaskier

(I'm Lost, I'm Found in You - currently writing)

Geralt reeturns from Afghanistan and moves in with Jaskier, whose home is too quiet all by himself. Roach is Geralt's trusted service dog, because the nightmares haunt him. Jaskier comforts him at night, when he wakes up screaming with soft music. They fall for each other, but don't want to admit it or ruin what they have. Ciri enters their loves as Geralt's godchild, who runs away from her abusive foster family and stays with them - for now.

Crime AU

(You'll Make Me Brave - nearly finished | Chapter 5 of 7)

Jaskier is found with bloody hands and visibly distraught next to his father's dead body. It definitely looks like he killed his own father, but did he? Jaskier doesn't even know that himself. There was someone else, but did he imagine that? He had every reason to kill his father. After years of abuse, mainly towards his mother, and finally killing her (which could not be proven, cause of his father's connections) Jaskier had a motif. Geralt, the Detective ont he case, believes him, though. Maybe because they're connected through their abuse (Geralt was burnt by his last foster family), but there sure is something more.

Hacker AU

(Let's Just Close Our Eyes and Let Go - can be read as standalone, more to come)

Jaskier operates under the name the Sandpiper and steals from the rich to give the money to homeless shelters, since he's spent a lot of time on the streets after his family kicked him out after coming out to them. Geralt sees him play music on the street, has seen him a couple of times and finally finds the courage to ask him out. Jaskier takes him to his home: A small flat on top of a building where he has loads of plants. Plants that don't even bloom at that time of year. Geralt see's Jaskier's magic (which Jaskier is completely unaware of). Vesemir calls Geralt since they had a break in their case. In front of Jaskier's building, he tells him that Jaskier is in fact the Sandpiper)

Hockey AU

(Wherever You Will Go - A first chapter, but there will be more)

Famous contemporary romance author Julian Alfred Pankratz is set to travel with the Kaedwen Wolves (who won the cup last year) to get to know how they interact with each other, learn about hockey, so that he can incorporate that in his next book. He's a little nervous, but still excited, until he sees a familiar face among the players. The face that was the model for one of the main characters in his last book, because they'd nearly fucked in the elevator they'd been stuck in- Only that Geralt had made it clear that he was looking for something serious, while Jaskier is afraid of commitment.

Modern Jaskier in Geralt's time

(A snippet, but nothing more has been written yet)

Jaskier is on his way to a gig when his car breaks down. With no cell reception, he starts looking for the next town, only to find that there is some sort of medieval festiva. At least he thinks that is the case. The costumes are so real, so detailed! And the monster on that guy's horse looks amazing. What great work! OH and the wig! Only that it's all real, and Jaskier still has to find that out. (taking photos with his phone, cause he can charge it with his solar panel, but he doesn't have a lot od ADHD medication anymore, so that's gonna get interesting)

Celebrity AU

(Rambling about it and a snippet)

Jaskier is a famous singer, but he can't deal with the pressure and turns to alcohol. All the fake friends make him appreciate alcohol even more, but he has a problem. That's why Yennefer hires Geralt as Jaskier's live-in-bodyguard/babysitter. He has to make sure that Jaskier is safe and that he goes to his AA meetings. He even get's rid of all the alcohol he can find in Jaskier's home for a start.

Your Name AU

(Rambling about this and a picspam and a tiny snippet and another)

Geralt and Jaskier wake up int he other one's body every now and again. At first they think it's just some kind of weird dream, until their friends ask them what the hell had been wrong with them the previous day. At first they're both like "I do what I want", but that quickly changes, because their behaviour has consequences for the other one, and they start to like each other or rather what they find out. And suddenly, Jaskier had to find out how to wield a sword, while Geralt needs to learn how to play the lute.

Stardust AU

(I only have a snippet so far)

Jaskier is ripped from the sky and lands down on earth with a necklace that he hadn't had before. It hums with magic, so he know he has a purpose down here. For centuries he'd watched the humans down there, has seen them fall in love and he yearned for the same thing. Geralt is hired to bring that fallen star with the necklace back to the family to whom that necklace apparently belongs. He doesn't believe in this whole "fallen star" shit, just like that people eat a star's heart to live longer. But he soon finds out that all that exists and that some people want to capture Jaskier for that purpose. He takes him to Kaer Morhen to find out more about him and the family that hired him. Vesemir might know more.

The Bachelor/Prince Charming AU

(Nothing yet, just thoughts)

After getting his heart broken more than enough and hookups and friends wirh benefits, Jaskier longs for something that lasts, something real (and he has to get married before he's 30 to get that family inheritence). Maybe that's why he rushes it along with partaking in this show, becoming the new Bachelor/PC. Geralt isn't one of the contestants, though, he's Jaskier's best friend. Has been for years, and he's also been in love with Jaskier for... God knows how long. But there's never been the right moment to tell him, because there's always been some other/new guy. Geralt is part of the show as well, as Jaskier's go-to-person, the one he talks about all the guys with to make descisions on who to send home. The audience ships them, because their chemistry is just *chef's kiss*. When they're down to the last 4/5 contestants, they meet Geralt as Jaskier's best friend. But how is he supposed to tell jaskier which one of these guys seems like the right match, when he wants to be that one himself? On the other hand, he always thinks that Jaskier deserves better than him, so... difficult times.

Neighbours AU

Geralt and Jaskier live next to each other but can't really stand the other one. Geralt is always so grumpy, and Jaskier is incredibly noisy! Like, he's always home when Geralt is around. Does that guy even work? Yes. Yes he does. While Geralt works a full-time job, Jaskier works for the radio station and actually has his own show where he gives advice on relationships, where he himself is rather skeptical when it comes to true love. He's willing to try though. Meanwhile the two of them get to know each other a lot better through a "blind date chat" kinda thing. They only know the first letter of their first name. No pictures. And they start falling for each other.

Hi, Doc. I am currently struggling with the tone of my thoughts on certain topics, and would like to change it. It's quite the challenge so far. If you'd like to share, I'd love to hear some of the strategies you used to help change your general mindset to a more positive/appreciative one. Thanks!

I'm so glad you reminded me of this because this is a post I keep meaning to make and then not doing it!

I think people have this assumption that I was just born with a cheerful and chipper outlook, and I don’t think that’s true and to some extent, not even fair. I’m sure there IS some quality of inborn brightsidedness to me, but I really do make a distinct effort to try and remind myself of that which is beautiful and good and wonderful about this world.

It can be hard, seeing as we’re kind of living in an age where happiness and positivity are seen with suspicion at best, and as some sort of lie or conspiracy at worst. There’s a wide fucking chasm in between necessary venting on an individual bad day and using negativity as the method through which we connect with other people, which makes finding joy seem like a crime.

ANYWAY

Here are some general tips, from me to you, about turning your face to the sun.

Physical activity!

Nobody ever wants to hear this one, but honestly physical activity is so helpful for getting out of your own head. What this means for you is going to depend dramatically on what your level of physicality looks like now, but you want to be working hard enough that you sweat. For me, that’s a 4-6 mile run. For someone, it might be a long walk or a dance video. I find that I have a few hours of calm and peace in my mind afterwards. It’s been an immense help in coping with my ADHD over the course of my life.

Touch grass

Honestly going outside, especially in the sun, is such a huge game changer. I do it even in the winter. There’s something very relaxing and fulfilling about literally turning your face to the sun. I think sometimes it’s so easy to stay in our houses, but we need to remember that human beings need enrichment to be happy. We need things that keep our minds active, and a change of venue can be so wonderful and helpful. I go outside, like for at least a ten minute walk, every single day, hell or high water.

Tell yourself

We believe the things we tell ourselves over and over again. If we tell ourselves that we’re stupid, even in jest, we start to believe it on some level. Same with telling ourselves we’re ugly, or hard to be friends with, or anything like that. There’s a difference between being candid with yourself and constantly finding ways to tear down not only yourself but the world around you.

It’s easy to make fun of Pollyanna’s “glad game” but I think there’s some merit in it, where you specifically look for something to be happy or glad or thankful for in your life. When I’m walking, I hear the geese go overhead and think about how much I like when they honk in the air. I look at fat bumblebees in the flowers and how much joy they give me. I buy myself clearance grocery store blooms and remark at how lucky I am to be able to bring some specialness and beauty into my home for three dollars. I lie down at night and think about how soft my sheets are and how nice they feel. I goddamn near say shehehiyahu every year when it’s the first day that it’s cold enough to wear one of my lovely thrifted cashmere sweaters that I looked so hard for. There are beautiful things in our lives, small things, and if we cultivate an appreciation of those small things, they become easier and easier to see.

“But Doc, when I’m out, I don’t see fat bumblebees in flowers or--” yeah that leads me to my next point.

Put Down Your Goddamn Phone

Someday, someday, we are going to admit that we can both really enjoy our smartphones and that they can very easily have a deleterious effect on our lives. When you’re out taking that ten minute walk, stop doomscrolling, stop waiting for that hit of dopamine from a flashgame and cultivate a slower, more constant appreciation of things. I know it’s hard! I know! With the baby I can’t have my phone off on Saturdays and holy shit has it been rough not getting addicted to it all over again. That one day a week pause was a game-changer for my mental health and I can’t wait til I can do it again. But just for a little bit, on a walk, notice the small things in this world. Maybe it’s a kid playing ball in a yard, or something, a particularly soft looking kitty in a window, but beauty is there, if we just look. I promise. There are small and powerful delights in this world.

I see things because I’m looking.

You are not helpless

Honestly, living my values to the best of my ability makes me feel happier and more positive. Hopelessness is a huge problem, and so I think it’s better, often, if we stop obsessing about the things we can do, and start focusing on the things we can, and making a bigger, wider, more expansive view of what we CAN do. As most of you know, there’s a bunch of industries and businesses I don’t support, and while I may not be able to stop them, it gives some peace to know I’m not a participant. I cannot fix everything that is broken in this world, but I can argue at City Council meetings about things that directly affect my community, and I can be in my neighborhood committee to try and make my neighborhood better, and I can hold that I hate Christmas but still volunteer for the big Christmas thing they put on for foster kids because that’s HELPING. We are too old for Mr. Rogers “Look for the helpers,” we must become the helpers that children look for, and this, I think, is a thing that can make you HAPPY. I think knowing what you bring to this world can bring a sense of purpose and joy.

If none of this was what you meant to ask, then I’m sorry, but this is generally how I keep myself a better, happier, more cheerful sort of person.

The Bear Roots of Burbank Cartoons: A Lookback at Boo Boo Runs Wild

5 years ago, [adult swim] aired the greatest of all Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episodes, “Boo Boo Runs Wild” (1999), on August 13th, 2016 A.D. at 4 AM.

Look and see, kids, how America’s not-so-average bear connects in the wide world of animation that produces many of the cartoons that you love in Burbank, Canada and more!

As and after I saw it, I knew that I found the greatest band of cartoonists out there, and that greatest band of cartoonists out there was none other than...

Spümcø, whose many creatives would end up working at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Cartoon Network Studios, and many other popular Burbank and Canadian studios that made the cartoons I grew up and beyond watching.

Obviously, the character design is rather different, but they still look like the right characters, even with the slight color changes...

and with their items of human attire out. Ranger Smith, on the other hand...

Ranger Smith is wildly off model, and probably on purpose, throughout the picture.

Only in one scene appears he with a more familiar face.

Now, I didn’t have to watch Wild Kratts (which, by the way, features 6 Spümcø Canada creatives) to learn that “there’s only one thing a bear likes more than raiding a pic-a-nic basket.”

As the title suggests, Boo Boo loses his temper when Ranger Smith restricts him from tearing bark and decides to go primal in returning to his bear roots: “From this day forth, I’ll not dress in the man’s attire, and I’ll not speak in the man’s tongue. From now on, it’s going on all fours and grunting for me!”

Boo Boo wreaks havoc for the trees with his natural bear roots.

Unlike past episodes, however, the artists went far wilder than the usual Hanna-Barbera cartoon, making the trees alive and screaming in pain! OH, WHAT TOURTUE! Not to mention how I love Boo Boo’s goofy/manical laugh, a beautiful product of John Kricfalusi’s voice (Yes; I know that he was a formerly abusive megalomaniac who still has ADHD, but God knows what cartoons would be like today—at least those produced in Burbank and Canada—if it wasn’t for the many layout artists that he led).

Also unnatural to a Hanna-Barbera cartoon is the extreme levels of slapstick, wackiness and graphic nature of cartoons since such shows as Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, Beany and Cecil’s DiC reboot, and The Ren & Stimpy Show. Boo Boo and now Cindy Bear are licking away at all of the honey... and bees... with insanely long tongues (may be that they’re sloth bears?). This left Yogi Bear practically speechless.

The mere sequence of dialogue between Yogi and Ranger Smith, discussing what to do about Boo Boo, involved HEAVY work in the storyboards by Vincent Waller. So many expressions that they couldn’t fit in each of Spümcø’s 3-panel storyboard pages!

As you see, in addition to Vincent Waller’s storyboards, John K. added extra poses (storyboard revisions more or less, but definitely layout poses) under the respective scenes. That way, Vincent could focus on telling and writing the story in rough pictures. (source of storyboards)

I also love the sound design. While it’s definitely true to a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, John K. and the late Henry Porch were very creative with some weird, dated and out-of-context sound effects, similar to what they and Horta Editorial did on The Ren & Stimpy Show in the first two seasons. The production music (probably APM and Capitol Records) also gave it a vintage, nostalgic feel.

Ultimately, with the aforementioned abusive megalomaniac aside, Spümcø undoubtedly harbored some of the finest animators and artists ever. Such names as Bob Jaques (Spongebob Squarepants, Buy One, Get One Free*, The Baby Huey Show), Ben Jones (DC Super Hero Girls, Cats Don’t Dance, Teen Titans GO!), Vincent Waller (Spongebob Squarepants, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog), Albert Lozano (Inside Out, A Kitty Bobo Show), Todd White (Spongebob Squarepants), Eric Koenig (Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Madagascar, Cats Don’t Dance, The Simpsons, and The Tigger Movie), and Erik Wiese (Samurai Jack, The Mighty B!) are among the hundreds of creatives who ended up almost everywhere working in Burbank and Canadian animation.

Other names on the Spümcø team that one might recognize include Gabe Swarr (Dexter’s Laboratory, The Buzz on Maggie, Foe Paws, El Tigre), and even background artists such as Richard Daskas ( @rdaskas - Samurai Jack, Time Squad, Sym-Bionic Titan, Batman Beyond), Richard Ziehler-Martin (Tiny Toon Adventures, The Wacky World of Tex Avery), Hector Martinez (Tom and Jerry: Robin Hood and His Merry Mouse, Timone and Pumba, Captain N, Evil Con Carne, Dora the Explorer), and Tony Mora (MAD, Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, Pickle and Peanut). I mean: in short, these artists worked for Warner Bros. Animation, Disney Television Animation and Walt Disney Feature Animation, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network Studios!

Spümcø’s production assistants on Boo Boo Runs Wild feature Matt Danner —a fantastic character designer, storyboard artists, director and producer, whose credits range from (Johnny Test and The Legend of the Three Caballeros to Team Hot Wheels and The Looney Tunes Show—and Cartoon Brew editor Amid Amidi. Brian A. Miller was an executive in charge of production, not for but probably in association with Cartoon Network.

Spümcø’s creatives, as I said, are all over the place in Burbank animation. Other shows that still air on @adultswim have ex-Spümcø creatives. For example: today’s re-run of Samurai Jack EPISODE XVI features Chris Reccardi (The Powerpuff Girls, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy)...

Scott Wills (Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat)...

Lynne Naylor-Reccardi (The Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show, Wander Over Yonder) and Jim Smith (YooHoo and Friends, Tom and Jerry Tales, McGee and Me)...

and Leticia Lacy (TRON: Uprising, Sym-Bionic Titan, Wander Over Yonder, Korgoth of Barbaria).

Even outside of Cartoon Network Studios, where most ex-Spümcø artists end up, @cartoonnetwork’s The Amazing World of Gumball, from Cartoon Network Studios Europe (AKA Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe), features ex-Spümcø artist Charlie Bean (The Powerpuff Girls, Robotboy, Batman: The Animated Series, Timone and Pumba, Creature Crunch) on The Cartoon Network Europe Development Team.

One of Cartoon Network’s biggest and craziest hits, Teen Titans GO!, also features such ex-Spümcø artists as storyboard artist, director and producer Luke Cormican (The Buzz on Maggie, Brandy and Mr. Whiskers, Brickleberry, The Replacements, El Tigre)...

Gerald de Jesus (The Book of Life, The Ricky Gervais Show, TMNT)...

and Eric J. Pringle (Fosters’ Home for Imaginary Friends, The Problem Solverz). What wacky cartoon filled with live-action images, unpredictable visual gags and extreme slapstick humor wouldn’t?

Relatively, you could even tune in to Nickelodeon, the original home of Spümcø’s ground-breaking hit, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and see names of creatives associated with Spümcø and Ren & Stimpy, such as Zeus Cervas (Star vs. the Forces of Evil, Spongebob Squarepants, Clarence) on today’s episode of The Patrick Star Show...

or even Gabe Del Valle (Mighty Magiswords, Spongebob Squarepants) on today’s episode of Middlemost Post!

Overall, Boo Boo Runs Wild introduced me to the cartoon studio whose works I took for granted and on which I was missing out all of my life, and I strongly encourage this generation to support this Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episode, which you can watch RIGHT NOW on [adult swim]’s site. It was officially on their YouTube channel, but it was removed for unknown reasons. This short never even got a DVD or VHS release!

The last televised airing of Boo Boo Runs Wild on [adult swim] so far was January 6th, 2019 A.D., but Spümcø also produced “A Day in the Life of Ranger Smith” and “Boo Boo and the Man” (based on true events in the life of John Kricfalsui) for Cartoon Network.

As I come to a close, it’s worth noting that layout Ed Benedict, an animator and artist whose credits go all of the way back to the 1930s with Disney and continued with MGM and Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network Studios, originally worked on Yogi Bear episode “Yogi’s Birthday Party” as a layout artist, and reprised that very role for “Boo Boo Runs Wild”. What a legacy the animators and artists of this episode leave!

Always will I remember how Spümcø, whose legacy connects to my Cartoon Network-infused childhood, blessed me and graced me that fateful day, August 13th, 2016 A.D., with the ultimate example of the fine art of cartooning that is the Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episode “Boo Boo Runs Wild”. I was living in the moment, and I thank God for it.

“For years they have [been] asking me to make new Yogi cartoons, but I can’t even get a half a million [dollars] to make one, probably because I actually like the characters, but 60-70 million $ to make walking corpses is economical.” - John Kricfalsui on Yogi Bear (2010)

Another Ranger Smith, Boo Boo or Yogi Bear cartoon from the people behind The Ren & Stimpy Show is highly unlikely today, due to the abuse and harassment of John K. angering the world to the point of hating and condemning the man who helped to shape not only Cartoon Network but also television animation—and animation as a whole—with an undeniable legacy of artists and animators who deserve way more credit and respect than we perhaps thought of giving as kids.

Watch ‘Jamie Johnson'

Did you enjoy Andi Mack? There may be a show that resembles Andi Mack a lot in a way, and that you could enjoy. It’s called ‘Jamie Johnson’ and you could say that it’s Andi Mack if Jonah Beck was the titular character and the show had no storyline restrictions... which doesn’t sound very groundbreaking but hear me out.

From the get go, at the heart of the show are three friends: Jamie (which is basically Jonah Beck, he’s very bland and he thinks liking football is personality trait just like Jonah with frisbee BUT there’s also a hint of Andi when it comes to storylines with his family and rather shocking revelations surrounding his family), Boggy (which is basically a hybrid between Gus and Cyrus but without the gay factor),

and last but not least, Jack (which we could easily compare to Buffy – athletic girl who wants to join the boys football team and doesn’t care what others think about that because she’s basically better than everyone there, her journey’s amazing and there are also some similarities with her creating a new team along the way and her mom always being away, just like with Buffy)

Every group of protagonists needs an antagonist – that would be Dillon, who we could definitely compare to TJ – at first comes off very mean, does questionable stuff and has that one thing that makes him open up a bit (with TJ it’s dyscalculia and with Dillon it’s [I won’t spoil]) BUT Dillon’s characterization goes way deeper than that with his dad being a whole bully, Dillon’s one of the best developed characters on the show so far and they really did well with his character as the seasons went by... there’s also this other thing that connects him with TJ, which I will get to in a few.

We could say that these characters are the core four of the show since Season 1 but as the seasons go by they add up more and more interesting characters... with Season 3 and onward, they also write in character-centric episodes, which gives more development to characters that are not these four – for example Zoe who has to take care of her mom with MS; Ruby and Alba who are looked after by two foster moms which results into a whole storyline about homophobia (and surprisingly very honest and rough depiction of it), Wozza with ADHD, etc.

As the show progresses, the mood of the show gets rather serious, every character gets their own space and storyline, and the budget for the show gets better and better – in Season 4, the show’s football team competes in a world tournament in Sweden forreal and the scenes were filmed during the real event – them casting actual football players makes this whole experience a lot more authentic. Don’t even let me start on them showing one of the main characters getting hit by a car just like that... TRUST, this show is wild.

The show’s not only putting championing women’s football and gender equality at the front, but also in Season 5 mental health issues will be explored (possibly with Boggy) AND they’re taking Dillon on a journey to coming out as gay this season, which was heavily hinted at in Season 4.... I mean

The gay storyline starts next week (June 4, S05E05) with Elliott coming in the picture (he’s being looked after by Ruby and Alba's moms as a foster kid on an emergency placement and in the trailer it’s revealed he’s gay).

Them creating a show which seems to be targeted at young guys and then putting in all the issues and storylines in to raise awareness is, at least in my humble opinion, a smart way to teach a certain group of people a lesson they wouldn’t want to hear otherwise... it’s a really chill show, easy to binge, AMAZING loving coaches (one of them on the pic below) throughout the seasons, the show has a lot of great moments. It may surprise you how far they go with some storylines for a show of this nature. The storylines are very consistent and if they start something, they pull it off all the way (unlike Andi Mack because of Disney restrictions). If you wanna watch, BBC has all the seasons on their site, come on.

Human Nordics

I’m in a Nordic mood so I was thinking about what their family lives/relations might be like in a Human AU. To start this off I should say I normally headcanon their names to be Lukas Steilsson (* - read note. - Nor), Mathias Køhler (Den), Björn Oxenstierna (Swe), Emil Steilsson (Ice), Timo Väinämöinen (Fin), Karl Oxenstierna (Ladonia) and Peter Kirkland (Sealand).

( * - “But wait, isn’t Norway’s surname Bondevik?” - It was one of Norway’s suggested surnames by Himaruya many years ago, and for a long time it was also the most popular to use. However, since the surname has bad political connections in Norway, it was generally decided by the older fandom (myself included) to use one of the other suggested surnames instead. I chose to go with Steilsson. It’s one of the surnames Himaruya chose for Iceland, and while the name is not strictly an Icelandic name the “-sson” surnames are very common in the Scandinavian countries. Letting Norway and Iceland share the surname Steilsson also felt like a nice reference to them being brothers.) -

Honestly? While their names work well in nation-verse their surnames don’t fit as well in a Human AU - especially since I also hc Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Iceland to be siblings and would like them to have the same surname (or at least not 3-4 different ones). Thus I would likely give them all the surname Steilsson, since it’s a more neutral Scandinavian surname than ‘Køhler’ or ‘Oxenstierna’, while Fin/Timo would keep Väinämöinen and is a close childhood friend who at some point got un-officially adopted into the family.

If we also go with the route of a future SuFin-marriage I honestly think Swe/Björn would be more likely to take Fin/Timo’s surname than the other way around (and tbh Björn Väinämöinen has a nice ring to it), but if you’re not a fan of the ship you can skip this part.

As for jobs I think:

- Lukas likely works the stock market and is crazy good at it. Almost filthy rich. Also helps Mathias out part-time with administrative work to make sure the paperwork is filled in correctly. I can also see Lukas being a current or former skiing master on professional level.

- Mathias would be perfect as an electrician with his own company. Lukas helps him with some of the administrative work part time to make sure the paperwork is done correctly (which my headcanoned Mathias’ ADHD likely makes it harder to focus on), but Mathias does a great job with his company and earns a decent amount of money.

- Björn is absolutely a kindergarten/pre-school teacher. The pay isn’t great, but he loves kids and they love him. Peter would be one of the 1-6 year old kids in his class. (Peter would live with his single guardian, either brother or dad, Eng/Arthur.) Haven’t decided if Karl should be the Nordics’ youngest sibling or Björn’s son, but either way Björn has custody of the lil’ sassy child and Karl grows up with Björn as his father-figure, no matter their biological ties.

- Ice/Emil is the one I see as still being in school, likely being a teenager around 14-16 years old. In canon nation-verse Denmark raised him, and while I think it would be more of a full sibling effort in this human AU before they began to move out, Emil likely still live with Mathias here. Lukas may or may not (still) live with them as well, but if he’s skiing on a professional level he would have to travel around a lot for competitions and training, so it would make more sense to let Emil live with Mathias to make sure he gets to live a stable life.

- Fin/Timo was the most difficult to decide on for me. I can see him being former military, but afterwards... I’m not so sure. Possibly driving the snowmobiles and shoveling snow during the snow seasons, or perhaps being some kind of social worker. Tbh I’m not sure, so I’ll have to think more about this one. (Suggestions are welcome below, if you have any.) .

I imagine the Nordics’ parents died fairly young, so for the most part the siblings had to raise themselves with Lukas, Mathias and Björn being forced to take on more parental role for Emil and Karl. They probably met Timo while in foster care system and/or at an orphanage and grew up really close together and love each other very much. However, in early adult age (18-24 years old?) Björn eventually wanted to move out (to “test his wings”?) from their then shared apartment and ended up in a pretty bad fight with Mathias over it, who wanted them all to stay/live together. - “We have always stayed together - why change it now!?” - It took a long time for them to patch up their relationship after their fight, something which I imagine affected the whole family.

Björn and Timo might have been roomates for a while during the fight, before Timo left for the military, but further into adult age all the Nordics lived separately. (With the exception of Emil and Karl then, being kids).

[The SuFin-part of me imagine Björn and Timo took a long time to actually become a couple, but they eventually move in together again when they’re both around... say 30-35 years old? As briefly mentioned earlier I also think it’s more likely Björn took Timo’s surname if/when they get married, making them Timo and Björn Väinämöinen, with Karl then being allowed to choose if he also wants to change his surname. ]

Purely on a platonic level I imagine Timo on Lukas to likely be the closest to each other, sharing a lot of interests and the need to dote on Emil. (Who may or may not secretly enjoy it, but is also a teenager who finds being shown affection in front of his friends 100% embarrassing). x)

Lukas’ and Mathias’ relationship took a lesser hit because of their own fight when Lukas also moved out (or started to travel more as a skier?), but at that point Emil had had enough and exploded on them both. Told them off for being stupid. That patch up went quickly/quicker, and was also what made Mathias realize that his ongoing fight with Björn was kind of stupid too, and not worth it. Though it helped that Emil also exploded on both Mathias and Björn over how stupid the two of them were being. (Emil was tired of the fights, and sometimes an explosion of anger from the affected third party is what’s needed to realize how stupid the fight actually is.) .

In present time all of them are close siblings and friends again (and possibly also a couple in SuFin-case?) , and I imagine their relationship to be much stronger now than even before the fight.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

In a way, it’s nice to know there are Greek gods out there, because you have somebody to blame when things go wrong. For instance, when you’re walking away from a bus that’s just been attacked by monster hags and blown up by lightning, and it’s raining on top of everything else, most people might think that’s just really bad luck; when you’re a half-blood, you understand that some divine force really is trying to mess up your day.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Summary:

Percy Jackson can’t seem to stay out of trouble. Once, he thought it was because of his ADHD, but now, after being chased by demons and mythical creatures, Percy knows it’s more than that. Percy Jackson is a half-blood. Half-human, half-god, Percy’s world will never be the same again, but finding out he’s the son of a god has its own complications, like having both the god of the sky and the god of the underworld out to get him for a crime he didn’t commit…

Review:

When I was a kid, I was a big reader but neither of my parents really fostered this appetite in me, so instead of buying me books or taking me to the library to get new reading material, I was forced to make do. I had a lot of picture books and things for really young kids, but I wanted something to challenge me and make me think. I found some old beaten-up copies of Nicholas Sparks books in my moms closet once, I had a dictionary that I read a few times, and that was pretty much it until high school when I got a job and was able to buy my own books. But by that time, I was already reading adult books and didn’t really want to “regress” in my reading by picking up something in the middle-grade section, even though one of my oldest friends could not stop talking about her favourite book series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

I was a book snob throughout highschool. I took pride in reading the longest books, the classics that everyone complained about, all of that super pretentious bullshit that I now hate. And because of that narrow-minded snobbery I missed out on reading this series when I think I really needed it. The themes in PJO are surprisingly heavy for a middle-grade book, but it’s so refreshing to see because sometimes, heavy shit happens when you’re a kid and it always seems like no one can relate. I am now 23 years old, and I know for a damn fact that little 13-year-old me would have been able to connect with Percy and maybe even gain some perspective on things that I didn’t even know I was dealing with at the time. Absentee parents and ADHD were things that I didn’t even start to examine in my own life until adulthood, but the thought that this series exists and that kids who have potentially had a parent leave or have ADHD or dyslexia or are in any way different, have this, warms my heart. I even mentioned that I was reading it to a friend, and the way that he lit up talking about it…

Reading about Percy and his friends tackling this quest was fun, and shocking, and a pure delight, even at my age and I’m glad that I finally got around to reading it.

Character bios/descriptions

Here’s some descriptions of the sides in this au cos i wanna talk about them like all day lol

Patton Sanders (formerly Shepard):

Age: 29

Pronouns: he/him

Height: 5’6”

Straight chestnut brown hair, chocolate brown eyes, hint of a tan but nothing too extreme, rectangular glasses with black frames, usually wears clothes that are comfortable (especially oversized jumpers), loves wearing beanies (often steals Logan’s, who hesitantly allows it) (mostly cos he’s really freaking cute in them)

Really good with kids (ofc) and is such a people person, but can get shy around older people (specifically men old enough to be his dad)

Very good at reading emotions and knowing what people need, whether it’s a hug or alone time

Has asthma, but it’s not nearly as bad as it used to be

Is an only child to a mother and father, but ended up running away cos his dad became really overly aggressive

His uncle on his mothers side is Emile, who is married to Thomas, and they both took Patton in once it became clear that emiles sister and her husband were unfit parents (although Patton’s mom was much better with Patton and actually helped him run away) which was when he had his last name changed to Sanders

He met Logan when he ran away and they both went to emile and Thomas’s house together (I actually wrote the story of how they met for 25 Days of Ficmas on my main blog uwu)

They started out as friends for a long time until Patton found himself falling for Logan, who revealed that he had been crushing on Patton for quite some time

Their relationship started out rocky as neither of them knew exactly how to date (theyd dated other people before, they were just remarkably bad at it) but they made it through in the end

Logan Sanders (formerly Adams):

Age: 28

Pronouns: he/him

Height: 5’11”

Curly, light brown hair, amber eyes, moderately fair skinned, a lot of freckles on his face and arms, round glasses with silver frames, dresses much differently depending on if he’s home or in public - at home he’ll wear T-shirts and casual lounge pants and beanies and stuff, but in public typically sticks with a polo shirt and jeans, sometimes with a necktie depending on the setting

Has a tendency to put up a cold exterior around strangers or when in a public setting, but around loved ones he’s much more relaxed and casual, but still usually struggles to express his feelings.

He’s an amazing father, although sometimes he doubts this despite how much his kids absolutely adore him (he also has a tendency to doubt his own intelligence, even though he’s incredibly smart)

Is autistic, on the high functioning end of the spectrum, and has worked with professionals for basically his whole life to work on reading social cues and such, which he’s much better at now

Has three younger sisters - from oldest to youngest, Ellen, Renae, and Ashley. Logan being the oldest sibling, he’s always felt quite protective of his sisters. Can and will physically fight the whole planet for them

Their father died when Logan was 16. He was completely distraught over this and ran away from home. It was the most reckless, impulsive thing he’d ever done, but he doesn’t regret it for a single second, because that was how he met the love of his life

He did end up going back home to his family, because he knew they needed him

Virgil Sanders:

Age: 4 (birthday December 19)

Pronouns: he/him

Height: idk however tall four year olds are

Floppy black hair, gunmetal blue eyes, about as pale as a vampire, always wearing something purple (most notably the light purple polo shirt Logan couldn’t resist getting him, as well as his dark purple jumper that’s a size too big)

He’s fairly shy, though Patton and Logan tend to avoid calling him as such (they typically say introverted), but once he warms up to new people he’s a delight (it took him quite some time to fully trust Janus, but even from day one it was clear they connected on some level). He adores insects and arachnids, and much to Patton’s dismay, his favourite is spiders. He wants to be an entomologist when he grows up, but he can never remember the word for it, so he says “bug scientist”

Is suspected to be autistic but has yet to be tested for it

He was adopted by Patton and Logan when he was an infant. His mother was sixteen years old and had to give the baby up, due to her parents insistence, plus she knew she was unfit anyway, and it didn’t help that the father completely abandoned her. Patton and Logan matched with her in the adoption process when she was three months pregnant and it was quite the journey from start to finish

Roman & Remus Sanders:

Age: 8 (birthday June 14)

Pronouns: both he/him

Height: uh average

Both fairly tanned having spent over half their childhood in the sunlight, Roman has short dark mahogany brown hair and forest green eyes, Remus has longer, curly dark mahogany brown hair with jade green eyes, they both have dark freckles, Roman’s mostly on his cheeks while Remus’s are basically all over his body, and Remus has a gap in his extremely crooked teeth as well as green braces. Roman has all manner of Disney apparel, but he especially loves wearing his white Mickey Mouse shirt with the long red sleeves, and he’s also unafraid to wear traditionally “feminine” clothes like dresses and skirts. Remus... prefers not wearing clothes at all honestly but Logan and Patton insist on it, so he tries to wear as few clothes as possible, usually his neon green tank top and dark brown cargo shorts

They’re very different from each other but they do have similarities and can work well together. They pretty much never admit it but they do love each other despite their differences and near constant bickering.

They’re both dramatic, but in somewhat different ways. Roman is dramatic in that way that’s like “I’m literally tinkerbell because you have to give me attention or I’ll die”, while Remus is more like “this little tiny thing inconvenienced me so I’m gonna overreact and formulate murder plans against whoever/whatever dare make my life unbearably difficult”. They’re also both very creative, but of course they have different views on creativity (I doubt I need to get into specifics). They also both love Disney, but roman is more into classic Disney while Remus prefers Pixar

They both seem to exhibit traits of ADHD but haven’t been tested for it yet

They were around three years old when their mom and dad both died in a car accident. It was two years after that that Patton and Logan decided to adopt them both, despite only planning on adopting one child. Virgil was a year old at this time, and they wanted an older kid, and they ended up with two. And really that was fine by them, they just knew that this was it; no more kids, at least for a little while

Janus REDACTED

Age: 15 (birthday February 3)

Pronouns: he/him/they/them

Height: 5’7”

Medium length light golden brown hair, two different coloured eyes (right - cognac, left - chartreuse), fair skinned with a red birthmark taking up most of the left side of his face, missing right leg where he had to get an above-the-knee amputation, which causes him to need forearm crutches, he usually wears clothes that cover as much of his body as possible, and he oftentimes - if not constantly - wears foundation and concealer to hide his birthmark, although Patton and Logan insist it’s not necessary

He tends to avoid people when possible, since he’s developed quite the trust issues over the years. Going from foster home to foster home has made it difficult to allow himself to get close with anyone. In spite of this, he always seems to find himself bonding with the kids in his foster families. Especially the Sanders family when they first took him in (their original plan was to simply foster him... that plan fell through as they very quickly decided they wanted him to be part of their family)

Overall they’re a sarcastic cynic with a knack for storytelling, and while they seem cold and reserved on the outside, completely uncaring about the world around them, really deep down they just want to feel loved by someone, they want to feel accepted and like they’re really part of a family, like they’re actually wanted

They developed a bit of trauma from their birth family situation but a lot of it has been worked out, although they still have issues to work through even after all this time

They were ten when their dad got blackout drunk, forced them and their mom into the car, and started driving. Janus still has no idea where he was trying to go, but they never made it. They got into a monumental car accident, and Janus was lucky they made it out alive, although it costed them their leg. Their mother died unfortunately and their father was on life support last they heard. They never found out if he woke up or if he was taken off of it, so they have no idea if their dad is dead or alive. They tell themself they don’t care, they don’t wanna know either way, but they do. They feel like they shouldn’t, since their dad hurt them and got their mom killed, but they did have fond memories of their dad, which made the entire situation that much worse

So yeah on the happiest of notes there’s the main fam-ILY!!! :,)

I might continue this post with descriptions of the entire extended family, who knows!!!! :D (let me know if I missed anything in the tags btw, although I reached the limit so oof if I did)

SINCE YOU ASKED SO NICELY i say as if the moment you mention kaz im not about to burst with rambles.

as always disclaimer: this is about my kazuichi - this is how i interpret him, write him, the works. this isn’t a statement on anyone else’s interpretation! however, i am instating a rule moving forward, that i will be ignoring any plots or memes that ignore the details of my interpretation. if you don’t want to write with him then, that’s completely fine! but in all honesty i’m very tired of fielding plots about him being a perv when i’ve explicitly stated in my character info that that goes against my characterization.

my kazuichi is based in the characterization from chapter one and his free time events. noting his social anxiety + the fact that he’s scared to talk to girls. he’s much more likely to stutter through a not creepy compliment, or anything that comes off as creepy is more speaking before thinking, without creepy intent (not unlike the ways sonia tends to accidentally say things that can skew sexual).

anyway! onto the good stuff.

kazuichi was raised by a single mom, his dad was never in the picture, and he never had much of a problem with that. it instills him with respecting women juice, and he’s very close with her! he goes to her for just about everything.

from a young age, he was very interested in mechanics- she found him taking apart and reassembling toys and any household electronics he could get his hands on. he had a natural affinity, and she did everything she could to support and foster that - finding old trinkets at thrift stores for him, toolkits, and let him experiment. then, of course, eventually helping him get into HPA to expand on that talent to try to ensure success for him.

part of the reason he excelled was using the hobby to cope with yet undiagnosed adhd and generalized anxiety disorder. it gave him something to do with his hands, and something to hyperfixate on if his brain was scattered. it also became an easy thing to talk about, and use to connect with peers, including his (ex) best friend.

then, when that falling out happened, he turned much harder into mechanics, filling the hurt with something he was good at. a distraction. he also marked the change in his aesthetic - the pink hair, changing out his glasses for pink contacts, the whole deal. the braid he wears is a touch from his mom, and he keeps it just for her. especially during the killing game, he plays with it when he’s nervous or anxious as a comfort gesture.

additionally, not too long after the Incident, his mom got him into therapy since she was worried about him. boom! formal adhd + anxiety diagnosis. he is unmedicated at least until adulthood, getting antsy about side effects and well, he’s made it this far. he worked with his therapist on appropriate coping mechanisms, but with the stress of the killing game, those generally go out the window.

he’s never been good at thinking before speaking, and has a tendency to get swept away with big emotional reactions, and/or start rambling, starting mid thought. hinata makes a good friend for him, because he’s good at being blunt and stopping him and making him back up or slow down.

while his preferred machines are vehicles, as evidenced by chapter 5, he’s good with all kinds! he likes to make things for friends, and in post canon, makes machines and mechanics to help around the island, both for general living, and recovery for those waking up from the simulation. special note for a mechanical prosthetic for komaeda’s hand!

generally, he’s easily excited, sweet, and runs on speed nervous. think puppy, and you’ll be in the right range.

Ahh, thanks for the ask! From this headcanon ask game:

Hunk

Age:

Supplementary canon: 17 - 18 in Seasons 1-6, 18-19 in Seasons 7-8.

Headcanon: I take the birthdays and ages in the Paladin Handbook as if the book were written on January 1st, so Hunk is only three months younger than pre-space whale Keith, and he's closer in age to (psw) Keith than to Lance.

Ethnicity:

Supplementary Canon: Half Samoan, half African-American.

Headcanon: Samoan on his dad's side, African-American on his mom's. Yes, I have his entire family figured out. They were relatively major characters in a fic I was hyperfixated on writing for a few months.

Gender:

Sure!

Which is to say, I've entertained pretty much every gender headcanon there is for Hunk except cis girl.

Mental Health:

Anxiety

I've considered Hunk as having ADHD before

Physical Health:

I saw a colorblind headcanon for Hunk once and like, I can get behind that?

Also, I think it'd be tragically amusing if Hunk had a food allergy that piSSED him oFF because it keeps getting in the way of him trying dishes he really wants to try

Bi/Pan (I go back and forth on which label I use for him, but the sentiment remains the same – all genders)

Most of the time I headcanon him as someone who, well, doesn't necessarily actively identify as arospec, but acknowledges that he has NO idea how to differentiate between romantic and platonic attraction. He just? loves people? Once the other person is like "this is what our relationship is" it's a lot easier for him to then develop his feelings along the appropriate track, but like, for example, if Pidge, his best friend who he has a 100% platonic relationship with and has never wanted anything different from, was suddenly like "hey, i wanna date you!" he probably would be like "yeah, okay, sure, we can try that!" (he might be confused because Pidge hasn't historically been romantically attracted to people. But if he was convinced she was serious). And that's not because he's secretly harboring romantic feelings for her, he's just sort of down for developing romantic feelings for any of his most special people at a moment's notice – OR for nurturing a hearty platonic love that can never be broken.

I have written him as more alloromantic, though – but he always values his friendships as much as his romances.

I've seen headcanons that Keith can't digest vegetables because of his Galra heritage. I'm not sure if I hold that headcanon 100%, because he is still half-human, but I definitely agree that Galra are carnivores (look at the teeth) and Keith is probably malnourished. Even his human parent is big and buff and Keith... is not. If he'd been raised by his dad throughout his childhood maybe he would have grown up beefier and taller (since I'm sure his dad probably at least somewhat understood the Galra diet from having lived with Krolia), buuut his dad died when Keith was prepubescent and then he was in the foster system and... yeah he probably wasn't getting the optimized diet for his particular interspecies genetic makeup.

I like to think that he grew up with a couple of Very Strange Health Conditions that turned out to just be Galra things, like UV vision and two sets of baby teeth and ridges of bone protruding from.his scalp like Acxa has (hello, big poofy bangs to hide that).

Also, any time he had to do a blood test or a urine test at the doctor's it just... did not provide anything resembling useful information.

Doctor: I... don't know what I'm looking at here exactly but we've run the test multiple times and this seems to be your actual blood? How do you have this much iron in your blood?? Maybe eat... less meat?

Hunk, looking at the same results years later, having adjusted for Galra heritage: Keith, you're anemic.

(If you want my specific headcanons about Who "people" are, it's Allura and Hunk – his hella strong but also kinda messy emotional connection with Allura, where he's just like "I know this is different from every other bond in my life but Please do not ask me to explain idk the Fuck is going on," and the fact that every time Hunk grabs him or picks him up or otherwise manhandles him his brain just shuts down like "oh this is good please continue to make hold" when it SHOULD be going into fight mode the way it would for anyone else)

I honestly don't know what Keith's background would be, but I think he's sort of... generally agnostic? Like, he believes in a higher power but not necessarily a sentient one or something to be worshipped. It's more like a big spiritual pulse through the multiverse that connects everything and everyone – fate, but with free will. It's what he taps into to access his nigh psychic abilities, which I've talked about before but maybe not since I made this sideblog so let me know if you want me to make a post about that.

things about my interpretation of tony stark. updated june 07, 2020.

here’s my exhaustive explanation for how i am not canon-compliant with the events and characterization of the mcu.

the reason for this is… well, there are several reasons, but i don’t want to stir shit up or just, in general, stomp on anyone else’s love for the mcu. and don’t get me wrong— i do love the mcu! but there are parts i’m critical of for personal reason, as we all have opinions on certain things. bc, yeah, you can love something, or someone, and still be logically critical about it or them.

anyway, here’s where my interpretation differs…

as per stated on my rules: i take inspiration for tony from multiple sources, including the mcu, marvel comics, the television show: avengers assemble, and my own personal headcanons. TONY IS ALSO ASIAN (SPECIFICALLY CHINESE) AMERICAN!!

i will admit that saying this isn’t particularly helpful if people don’t know, specifically, where i differ in terms of my interpretation of our dumbass genius. some of this info is scattered about on my blog, but here, it’s all consolidated into one post.

chen kun is my face claim, and i do use stuff from tony’s story from the mcu as a base. however, there are events and moments from the movies, that i selectively ignore due to personal preference; and then i build on top of my foundation with ideas, themes, and/or events from other sources such as the aforementioned sources listed above.

throwing this all under a read more because, like i said: exhaustive list. very. very. very fucking long. i’m serious– read at your own risk.

howard stark was an extremely abusive and absent father for all of tony’s childhood; tony did actively seek attention and approval from howard because he was rather aware of how famous he was and wanted the acceptance and validation from his dad; there wasn’t much shown in the mcu regarding his relationship with his father, but my inspiration for his father-son relationship comes from the comics;

an example of his verbal abuse: “you don’t want to be a sissy, now do you? stark men are made of iron!” (Iron Man, 1968);

an example of early exposure to alcohol: at age five, howard forced a drink into tony’s hand (which he did drink), stating that it would teach him “to be a man,” and that it’d “put hair on your chest” (Iron Man, 1968);

yes, this means that tony ‘forgiving’ howard in endgame is completely chucked out the window;

tony loses his parents the night of december 16, 1996 (not 12/16/1991), at the age of seventeen;

jarvis, the family butler, was more of a father to tony than howard ever was, and yes, this is why he names his first fully-functioning AI system jarvis;

tony was close with his mother, maria; she was his safehouse, and she taught him to be gentle and loving, and she also taught him the piano, which tony still periodically practices during his own time in private. in an avengers assemble episode, there is a piano in the tower that tony protects twice, which i reckon is because it has connections to his past with maria;

tony ain’t an old grandpa. i don’t see him being older than, like, 35–40 in the present time for my writing (chen kun is 44). this comes from comic and avengers assemble inspiration, which has been fairly ambiguous since they never mention his age. for plotting purposes in the mcu though, yes, he can be like 42–52 if needed.

tony is, by default, single unless otherwise stated. the reason for this is simply because i’m not big on tony / pepper in the mcu, and it’s not because i don’t like pepper (i love her as a character as an individual), but i just saw that the way they were written (so, this, yes, blames the mcu writers) was completely trash; they sort of redeemed it in endgame, but... in general, they had a lot of potential but then some writing choices pretty much ruined the ship for me;

this means that morgan does not exist unless otherwise specified and discussed, though i do enjoy the concert of tony being a dad to his own kid and breaking that cycle of howard’s shitty parenting;

i’m going to be as honest and transparent as i can: i do, for certain, love writing stevetony. they’re my primary ship. not simply in mcu dynamics, but from the comics and avengers assemble. however, like some can attest to, i will never force a ship on anyone. if you express no interest in them romantically? that’s fine. we can write them simply as good friends and comrades. i won’t stop writing or plotting with you if you don’t like them in a romantic dynamic. if you do like it that way? cool. i know it might be intimidating to discuss this given i look like complete trash for them, but i never choose who i will/will not write with based on whether we ship or not;

tony, publicly, hints toward being bisexual and biromantic a lot of the time as he’ll practically flirt with anyone at all times, but he never really openly admits it due to his oh-so ancient internalized homophobia (thank you for that one, howard and societal expectations of the time);

justin hammer is a long time rival in the industry, and often meddles with tony and his work all the time. it’s nothing new. the lack of foundation established in IM2 doesn’t provide much insight into their relationship. long story short (taken from avengers assemble): hammer is a punk bitch who’s jealous and tony is tired of him and will gladly beat his ass any day of the week whenever he drives a tank into his front door (which happens more often than not).

tony is fantastic with children. he loves getting to interact with children because he knows how excited they are to see him and/or iron man (seen in both the mcu and in the comics). this type of attention he’s okay about. if he can inspire children to do good things and be good people and be heroes in their own right, then he’s doing his job;

tony fosters the intelligence and dreams of bright individuals all the time by offering scholarships for high school graduates and post-secondary students, and also provides internship opportunities (equal opportunities regardless of race, sex, gender, religion, disability status, age, etc.)

we only see this occur with peter and harley in the mcu, but there are other kids— like riri williams! tony sees these kids for the bright minds that they have and he wants to help them and keep them safe as he knows these are the brains of the future.

let me run over iron man 3. like i said, i ignore some shit from the movies. tony doesn’t initiate the clean slate protocol, he doesn’t throw the arc reactor into the ocean, and he doesn’t remove the arc reactor from his chest. he will get surgery to get the shrapnel removed because if i were the follow the pain that comes with the comics, tony would literally be always on the verge of death at all times, requiring a chest plate to be recharged constantly to make sure the shrapnel doesn’t get closer– see? that’s a lot and i’m... lazy.

the reason for those choices are simple: clean slate protocol undoes his character progression;

the arc reactor is just a part of him as a person, stands as his heart;

avengers movie nights, (video/board) game nights, and training days exist and you will never be able to pry that out of my hands. tony always shows up fashionably late with coffee and pays for when shit gets broken by thor. team building exercises exist plenty within avengers assemble, including the fact that they share chores and decides who gets to do the next load of laundry from whoever chooses the short stick from the bunch.

tony has had anxiety and depression since he was a child. it just didn’t really flare up and get identified as a real, tangible mess of emotions and thoughts until he’d been kidnapped (and nearly died, at that). it got worse when he failed to address it until after IM3. into the present-day, tony deals with anxiety, depression, and PTSD all the time, but has improved (…sort of) when it comes to handling all of it, and certainly has grown to recognize similar symptoms in the people he cares about;

on another hand, tony has displayed symptoms of ADHD, but it’s not officially diagnosed, and some of these symptoms include, but are not limited to: hyperactivity (staying awake for days on end) and hyperfocus (hyper-focus on work), distractible (easily distracted when he’s not focused on something), rambling (talks a lot and often makes rather intuitive connections due to how busy his brain functions), impulsivity and recklessness (self explanatory), constant need to move around and/or do something (in meetings, he will be moving somehow, whether it’s tapping fingers or feet, or shifting around in his seat);

there are days where he feels inferior due to how human he knows he is (in comparison to most of his team), and other days, he feels as though he’s more machine than he is man. these feelings fluctuate depending on how he’s doing with his mental health, and/or if he hears and/or sees anything about him that points toward either idea;

there is always overwhelming guilt for those he can’t keep safe or people that die; tony doesn’t like to kill anybody (unless it’s robots, because… they’re robots, not human lives); though, if pushed far enough with no other choice, he will throw conventional morality out the window for the sake of protecting all that he believes to be for the good of the world;

tony isn’t jacked. he isn’t captain america fit, but he isn’t particularly thin, either. his body is sort of like a runner’s build (for visuals, refer to valerio schiti’s comic art of tony). i interpret tony’s body as a slight bit slimmer. he exercises, and being in the suit also is its own form of exercise. god forbid we discuss his eating habits, though. and–– he also isn’t short short, but he isn’t tall, either. he sits at 5’10”, which might be a little below the average male, but that’s about it.

speaking of eating habits, simply put: tony can’t cook for shit and that’s it. he’ll try to cook for his significant others’ on the occasion, but he can’t be blamed if he burns everything.

tony isn’t ‘woke’ or perfect, as it’s imperative to remember he grew up as rich and with financial and some social class privilege (since he was rich), despite the abuse and harassment he experienced during his youth. it’s taken him time to recognize this, and he realizes it really doesn’t cost anything to be a better person, which is why he tries to be better when it comes to his tone of voice when discussing certain topics he has no authority to be speaking of, and by taking action with simple manual labour when it comes to chores (so he doesn’t hire other people to do shit for him). he also knows he can’t be a man of ‘all bark and no bite’ when it comes to supporting people and causes, hence why he actively advocates for female and youth empowerment through both words and actions.

in regards to ca:cw events, i would prefer to ignore them. for specific-plotting purposes, this can be dropped, but i prefer the events of avengers assemble when it comes to ‘civil war’. it’s actually really simple:

tony was not honest about his intentions with the team regarding a robot that was initially made for him by howard, which ended up with an ultron reboot that nearly risked loads of civilian lives and the team’s lives;

steve confronted tony about it when they returned back to avengers tower. with tony’s insistence that everything was now fine, steve decided to resign due to tony’s dishonesty and lack of trust in the team;

this splits the team in half, where steve takes— well, they decided to leave since they didn't like tony's lack of honesty— natasha, the hulk, and the falcon to work under SHIELD as the ‘secret avengers,’ and tony, clint, and thor remain as leftover avengers (later with the addition of ant-man and temporarily, spider-man, in some missions);

in the end, they all join back together after learning to appreciate their differences and reconciling under the fact that there wouldn’t be any more secrets that could risk the world, and the team’s safety;

if i am to follow the events of the mcu— between ca:cw and infinity war, he develops nanotech for his armour, which is embedded into his very skin to accommodate for nanobots, which interacts via neural transmissions (visuals here);

tony recognizes that he lost his temper and let his emotions get to him in the moment, which fucked up shit that could’ve been talked through and fixed;

tony is an alcoholic. he recognizes that he always will be, though he’s always working toward sobriety. he certainly relapses every so often when things are rough and he feels as if he has no other options, but he’s aware that relapsing is part of the process of recovery. he has attended AA meetings (alcoholics anonymous), and has been AA sponsors for people in the past;

to skim through the events of infinity war and endgame should these be part of the things you’re curious about (this is getting really long and i’m sure you’re tired of reading this—how have you gotten this far?):

after returning from space, tony took a few months (~ five) to recover from those three months of malnutrition, dehydration, and the wound of thanos’ stab. tony sealed the front of his injury, but he sure as hell wasn’t seen dealing with the back end. during this time, he’s able to regain some muscle mass;

he lives on his own, retreating to the cabin to escape from the responsibilities of being a fallen hero who ultimately failed the people he was supposed to protect.

during the five year gap, he keeps in contact with the other avengers, but very rarely. they’re the only ones who know where he lives;

like i said— tony does not say any of that forgiving bullcrap to howard. victims of abuse don’t have to forgive their abuser, parent or not. let’s just imagine the entire interaction didn’t happen at all;

tony doesn’t die;

he used the infinity stones; but, to maintain consistency with what the mcu established w/ thanos: he sustained significant damage to his right arm, up to the shoulder and neck. it’s gravely scarred. the overall function of that arm also diminished greatly. vision out of his right eye is not as sharp as it once was, either;

a year of recovery and physiotherapy later, tony decides to amputate and go for a prosthetic. he works with shuri and wakandan tech to build an arm;

despite the end of the looming, world-ending thread, tony still battles resurfacing trauma. not every day is happy, but he is working toward recovery. there are days he doesn’t remember chunks of what happened due to the power of the infinity stones; sometimes, he doesn’t even want to remember it, anyway;

tony retires. sort of. for the most part. if the world really needs iron man, he’ll be there;

tony may have handed CEO-ship to pepper, but he still handles a lot of work for stark industries, and that’s what he primarily does post-endgame.

hey guys, so after uhh everything crashed and burned as u can see from this post, i did not follow thru in good time with writing a modern au headcanon post… BUT!!! fortunately, i have returned from my semi hiatus to bring you… inspired by this OG post… httyd modern au headcanons part 2!!!

· so like i said with the last one, cami is obviously internet famous for her ridiculously cool youtube channel

· shes also quite popular on insta but youtube is more her jam

· her fame started when a video of her pickpocketing stoick and them him finding out and absolutely Losing It went viral

· it was a vine

· you can hear hiccup laughing in the background

· her videos used to mainly feature pranks she did but since then shes branched out

· she still does a lot of pranks but now her videos also include: parkour, absolutely HORRIBLE karaoke (ft. hiccup and fishlegs), Q&A, playing with toothless for an hour and thirty minutes (yes, it did get a lot of views ((also toothless is a cat in this au))), roast battle vs snotlout (spoiler: snotlout cries), “a compilation of hiccup doing nerdy shit and me calling him a nerd (8 min, 30 sec)”, “reading yalls fanfiction abt me (fishlegs has an asthma attack)”, videos of her doing sports, & more

· he eventually becomes nicer to them at the beginning of sophomore year

sidney was born here in seattle, washington. her mother was BEATRICE KHAN, a fairly well known name in the publishing world ( though she never released any of her own countless numbers of novels ), absolutely unrelenting when it came to cutting her clients a good deal. her father was julian knox, a one time american football player who PEAKED in college and turned to writing romance novels after a career ending injury forced him to confront that he wasn’t much qualified for anything else. the family unit that they created was full of love and ever nurturing - perfect, from the inside to the out.

they were the quintessential all american family, where it COUNTED. parents that were sickeningly in love. two kids, with the perfect age difference between them. they lived in a house in the suburbs with a picket fence ( that was actually stained brown, not white ) and a perfect lawn, where the cat they had in place of a dog due to julian’s allergies would lounge, day after day. even the neighbours figured they were perfect ; the kind of thing with with all smiles, to their faces, and muttered darkly in the privacy of their own suburban homes. beatrice would go to work from eight to five, every day. julian would stay home. he got the kids their breakfast, he got them on a bus. he would go inside and write and break up the day with gardening or do it yourself projects, attending community meetings, fulfilling his pta role - and then his kids would come home, and dinner would be on the table in time for his wife’s return. perfect. clockwork.

sidney loved it, personally. she had no desire to act out. no need to break the mold, so to speak. she never felt as if she were stifled, or that her parents were pushing their own ambitions onto her. if anything, the thing that was most shocking about her early life was that she actually ENJOYED it. school could be challenging, in it’s own way - she was diagnosed with dyslexia young, but it took a few more years for them to pinpoint her adhd - but she got all the help that she could have dreamt of needing. she was allowed, if not encouraged, to try every whim that came to mind. they were, after all, within a privileged position enough to ALLOW it. piano lessons for two years, the violin for five. she attempted gymnastics and managed to break her wrist just two lessons in - never bothered to try another more physical activity, after that, but she had a healthy appreciation for watching sports, just like dad. her home life was excellent. her school life was just fine. she was a BRIGHT and curious soul, and she had aspirations for the kind of college that should she have attended, her mother could have lived VICARIOUSLY through her. she was extremely lucky to like her parents, and to appreciate the life that they had given her for all that it was.

she shouldn’t have to look back on these earlier years with sadness, and yet, life simply doesn’t work the way that it SHOULD. the week before the murders, she never could have presumed what was going to happen, though she was plagued by nightmares - something that she attributed to the horror movie marathon she had just completed or the milk drank before bed, and not to anything legitimate. she dreamt of hooded figures and serrated knives and a screaming that never stopped ringing in her ears, even after she awoke in a cold sweat and struggled to fall back asleep. she would struggle from the tangle of bedsheets with the urge to wash her hands, compulsively ; as if she were trying to get non-existent blood out from beneath her fingernails. she was fifteen years old, and she googled things like ‘can my period give me nightmares?’ and ‘is the milk before bed thing legit’, but she had NO REASON to fear the images that slipped away, as night turned into day.

it seems cruel, in it’s own way, that the night which changed the course of sidney’s life for good is one she spent completely unaware. she was staying at her girlfriends house - a sleepover planned for almost a MONTH - and the next morning, when the police came to pick her up, she had been in the midst of eating breakfast with the affectionately named ‘in laws’ and trying to swallow back a persistent feeling of unease. she was lucky that she was waiting for a lift back to her house - she was luckier, still, that a nosy neighbour had noticed her mother’s car hadn’t left for work, yet, and popped around to check in on them. if they hadn’t, and if she had gotten the early morning bus as planned, then sidney would have had to live with image of her bloodied parents until the day she DIED, too.

her mom and dad were gone. this was the gut punch, number one. number two was that her sibling - her should have been legal guardian - was under arrest. the MURDER weapon ( a phrase she had only ever heard on tv, and could never have guessed would be said in regards to her life ) had been found wrapped in one of their jackets and thrown in a dumpster outside. they had been picked up a block away, and in interrogation, their alibi didn’t stand up. it was a rather cut & dry case, and suddenly, everyone in the neighbourhood - what felt like the whole world, back then - was doing their level best to pick sidney’s picture perfect life apart. people who had once only ever had good things to say now talked about late night arguments between mom and dad. said that they had never trusted the look of her sibling, not even when they were a kid. said there was something not right about them - and that they couldn’t be sure sidney wasn’t the same. the circumstantial evidence piled against the only member of family that sid had left, and there was nothing that could be done. she was put into the system a mere week after the murders, and everything moved quickly on. she talked to a handful of reporters, but for the most part, people out in the world didn’t care for the story. it wasn’t anything too SPECIAL, she supposed.

too many stories talk of foster care becoming a sort of hell for the children stuck in it. for sidney, however, her foster home was her only salvation from the world outside her door. the one thing that she could rely on, even as she went through the most momentous changes. her first week back at school, the staring was almost painful. the whispers were worse. sidney requested she be moved, and in the process, she allowed herself be cut off from her old life - the friends she had, the partner she had loved. she started somewhere new, and she was... different, now. stranger. sidney’s way of dealing with all that had happened was to cling to things that had once only been a special interest - UNSOLVED crimes, sensationalist stories, horror movies and the supernatural. she spent a lot of time in her room, and she spent even more indulging in these new interests. the people at her new school figured that she was weird, and that assumption only got worse when they discovered what had happened to her parents. whispers of her being like her MURDEROUS sibling were somehow worse than anything else that had ever been said, but she took it, for the most part, on the chin. she couldn’t explain her sudden draw to the macabre, even less than she could explain why everything in her life had fallen apart. frankly.... it didn’t matter. she simply was.

sidney’s foster family supported her, right up until she turned eighteen, and even after. she sacrificed the dream of an ivy league school for something more achievable, beginning to attend a seattle local college after graduation and majoring in film, finding among those students - OLDER and more mature, of course, than high school kids - something she had started to forget was possible. her job as a film store clerk didn’t exactly help her rake in the cash, but once she started selling movie reviews to online publications, sidney was able to save up some money and buy professional equipment - beginning her podcast in late 2018. she doesn’t tend to talk about what happened. she doesn’t tend to think about her SIBLING. she’s got a life, now, and it’s not exactly the one she ever expected to be living - but it is her own, and that’s really all that she can hope for.

section two of three : headcanons

sidney dealt with her grief by… hyper fixating on a special interest she had always sort of had, and becoming quite the little movie buff. horror movies, more than anything, but people didn’t react very well when she went off on a tangent over wes craven’s talent, so she broadened her horizons a little. she enjoys film, maybe moreso than she should. all that led her to other special interests, and now she’s dabbled in just about everything that a woman can.

her podcast deals, of course, with unsolved mysteries. this usually takes the form of unsolved CRIMES, but... she believes in ghosts and aliens, and she throws an episode in every now and then that deals with them. she’s very open about this side gig, solely because she hopes that someday, it’ll be what she does for a living - and because there’s no point in attempting to hide something that’s such a huge part of her life, even if people do tend to... not enjoy her being so into these things, as the daughter of two murder victims.

her older sibling was acquitted of the crime - eventually. sidney still doesn’t enjoy thinking about them or it, per say, but when the news reached her, she did begin to... hyper fixate, once again, and begin to obsess over what the TRUTH was. she has cork theory board dedicated solely to her parents - and more recently has added another one, dedicated to what’s happening in seattle. she’s not gifted, or in the know, but she’s certainly not an idiot.

has a pet rat named church ( which is a fairly ironic reference to the cat in pet sematary ), and he’s NOT her first. she’s owned several since she was put into care, and they’ve always been something of an emotional support for her.

while i align sidney more with ‘conspiracy theories’ and ‘true crime’ than i do ghosts and ghouls, i will admit that i tend to push a lot of spooky cliche’s onto her, because i like having a character who’s very IN TOUCH and into that season, in particular. promise i’m trying to control the impulses.

always has on at least five necklaces and eight rings, and never has any less than ten bracelets. her style would be hard to define, but the amount of cheap jewelry is FAIRLY indicative.

section three of three : wanted connections

sidney knox-khan, our maya hawke is looking for their older sibling who resembles finn cole, tiera skovbye, dacre montgomery / up to player and should be 23+. applicants do not have to contact rachel to talk over details before applying. ( pls allow me preface with the fact that i wld be happy for her sibling to be half / adopted / fostered either, and they don’t necessarily have to be named after a horror character like sid was - though the latter is a fun lil thing abt the family, so i would love if u went that route too ! sid and her sib have had. a rough life. and by that i mean, they had an entirely perfect life up until the sib was aged 18 - when they were arrested for the murder of their well to do parents. it’s all explained more clearly within sid’s intro, and basically… the evidence was circumstantial and flimsy. it probably would have made sense they spend SOME time behind bars, but it’s also possible they didn’t - though sid was put into care for the remainder of her teens, so may not know they were ever released ! the two very distinct routes this could go in are …. sid being suspicious of them and feeling as if they must of done it, because who else could have, or alternatively - sid being open to the idea of them not, because nothing about the case ever sat right w her. we could talk more abt it, but i feel like it’s one of those connects i just. wld love to have ! )

( sid never took their name, so first up - that’s a detail open to applicants ! basically. there’s a mother, a father, and their merry band of foster kids - probably… four… five? a nice amount. none of them have to be like one another. none of them have to fit a specific role. this is the family that took sidney in after her parents were murdered, and the fact of the matter is - there are a LOT of stories in which foster care became a hell for the protagonist, but that’s not sid’s story. she was ostracized in school. she had lost her only blood relations. her foster home became a safe haven, and the people within it became as close as could be to her. we stan one supportive household who still hold her whole heart, to this day. )

( sid didn’t have ANY friends until she got to college, due completely to how #weird people began to find her. she eventually found her squad, but they’re basically. like every good horror movie group. her equivalent would be rany meeks from scream 1996, or noah foster from scream tv. she fits their archetype, but i wouldn’t say that the group MUST comprise of likeminded people. in fact, it’s more fun if they don’t. they’re not a group of jocks or cheerleaders or popular kids, but they are a sort of breakfast club. a merry band of b-listers who grouped together and have remained together for a real long time. )

( sidney made a bunch of… not entirely excellent choices, in the yrs following her parents deaths. that isn’t to say she acted out, or that she did anything that was too out of character for her. she really didn’t - but she did become a much more WEIRD version of who she had always been, and people pushed her away because of it. when others came along that seemed to be able tolerate who she had become, she clung to them - to almost extreme degrees. the relationship was a whirlwind if ever there was one, and perhaps wasn’t ‘true love’. maybe not even close. but they did seem to work right up until when they didn’t - and the end was quite messy, by all standards. sid did a good job of ending relationships on friendly terms, but this didn’t - all details aside from these are open for discussion ! )
