Richard Speight Jr (Skip Muck) Owen Ross Interview: Funny moments/anecdotes.
Boot Camp:
He "spent every waking moment" with Scott Grimes (Malarkey).
Dale Dye chewed out the whole battalion for reporting their injuries to production. Richard turned to Scott during this and said "Man Captain Dye is really getting it from the rear." (This was his favourite memory from boot camp) (Dye always referred to the production team as the rear or battalion HQ.)
Still calls Peter Youngblood "Shifty".
Filming:
The actors did all there own stunts. The mortar squad actually set up the morters on set.
The Crossroads scene in Holland, where Skip hits Penkala with a spoon, wasn't scripted. "Me just bugging the living crap out of Tim Matthews." (I don't remember this scene: my sign to rewatched the series)
The celebration after they received their jump wings was originally longer. (They need to release all these deleted scenes).
They dressed in a tent every morning and marched down to set like soliders.
"Nine months into the thing no one knew who the hell they were."
The Parasites
Micheal Cudlitz didn't lie. Richard got a parasite infection TWICE. He described the set as "not the cleanest environment."
Noel Hemmings (Charles Grant) also got the famous parasites.
Richard said he lost so much weight filming that when he returned home his friends assumed he'd developed a "heroin habit."
I paused to laugh at this:
Eion Bailey (Webster) lit his jump boots on fire after filming. (This has to be the most David Webster thing I have ever heard. The Dramatics.)
Since the show:
He still meets up with Scott Grimes and Tim Matthews.
He got to keep his whole costume. (I think he deserved it)
He's only ever watched the series once. "Was so emotionally intense."
Honestly, I feel like all the actors are mildly traumatised. It honestly sounds so intense and then the pressure of portraying an actual person as well.

So I recently rewatched Scott & Bailey (possibly an exercise partly in egotism - what sent me down the rabbit hole was a comment on my own fic that got me rereading what I’d written then rewatching the show) and I am always reminded of a few things. One is how affirming it is to have women’s stories centered in a narrative, not pitted against each other, not perfect but trying their best to support each other. Two is how goddam beautiful Amelia Bullmore and her cheekbones are, and three is how much Julie Dodson means to me as a character. I actually find it kind of difficult to put into words how much. Like, her queer energy is huge, and I love her bluntness and her care, but I think the thing that lives in my soul is so much about the physicality Pippa Haywood brings to her. We see her curl in on herself occasionally - being vulnerable in front of Gill, when being interrogated by Karen Zalinski’s incisive questions, so she is absolutely human and real, and I think that makes the way she is so brazen and confident with her physical presence hit that much more. The 3 inch heels up on Gill’s desk, the sliding into her blazer during a walk and talk (thank both god and Jesus for that one), the flinging doors open and ‘no, that’s me’. She is so absolutely unapologetic about the space she takes up, and quite aside from anything else, as a fellow tall woman (and a larger woman in general) that is such an aspirational goal that she has taken up residence in my soul and I channel her whenever I can.

Hi CJ, how would you rank the Ghostfaces?
Hey, Anon.
My ranking varies day to day so I’ll just tell you what it happens to be atm.
1: Mickey Altieri. Are you surprised? No, probably not. He’s been my number one ever since I can remember. He’s strong, brutal fast and GOD, he’s so fucking fine my heart cannot take it. Plus, he’s the first Ghostface to have an unmasking reveal and a bitch LOVES the unmasking reveals. He’s my baby girl and I love him forever. Also, I’m in love with Timothy Olyphant.
2: Stu Macher. He’s also my baby girl. I just love him so much he’s so funny and cute and brutal. Invented the iconic knife swipe GOD. I just adore every single thing about him.
3: Billy Loomis. Babe. Babe, babe, BABE. He’s so pretty I want to burst into flames. Complex baby girl fr my heart goes out to him. Again, brutal! “We all go a little mad sometimes.” RAIL. ME.
4: Amber Freeman. Best female Ghostface hands down. Her kills style is so chaotic and messy I LOVE it. She killed Dewey which aches my fragile little heart but you gotta give her props for doing it. She’s so hot. SO. HOT. She’s also literally insane and I like em crazy.
5: Ethan Landry. Although he doesn’t have a “hIgH KiLl cOuNt” I couldn’t give a flying cunt on a donut. He’s baby. His Anika kill was absolutely insane and his whole attitude in Act 3 was so fucking enjoyable. Just running around having a grand old time. Mood.
6: Charlie Walker. I’ve been experiencing some insane Charlie brain rot lately so he’s sky rocketed on my list, he may go higher who knows. Most brutal kill in the franchise, the phone call with Sidney, “I’m going to slit your eyelids in half so you don’t blink when I stab you in the face.” OKAY!!!! he’s fucking adorable I want to sit on his fucking face.
7: Quinn Bailey. She’s fast. Fuck she’s fast. She’s hot. Fuck she’s hot. She had so many feelings I honestly felt for her. Gale’s attack scene was so fucking cool. Her fake out death had me tbh. I love her, just not as much as others. Also, “Heyyyy roomies.” She can HIT.
8: Richie Kirsch. I don’t like him, I don’t hate him. He’s just pretty meh to me. His kills are cool I guess? I like that he goes for the throat. Jack Quaid’s acting was fucking phenomenal. He was funny and I really would’ve preferred him as a final boy.
9: Jason Carvey. Wasted. Potential. His Laura kill was so fucking brutal oh my GOD. I would have loved to see him more as a Ghostface because he would’ve been so cool.
Now to those I hate. Fuckers.
10: Nancy Loomis. Ugh. Nancy. Nancy, Nancy, Nancy. Fuck off. Bitch. You think you can kill my guy Randy? Fuck you. You think you can hire my baby girl Mickey and just betray him like that? Fuck you, you didn’t even succeed in killing him. Fuck off with your one kill. I like her motive though although like… Why did you just leave Billy? Make it make sense.
11: Wayne Bailey. God. I actually used to like him a lot but after rewatching I was like ew. No. NO. I get Sam killed your precious baby boy but like… You have two other children and you had to ruin their lives because of your sons obsession with Stab? Fuck you. His kills were amazing though I have to hand it to him. The bodega scene is top tier.
12: Roman Bridger. Okay. I adore Scott Foley. I cannot stand Roman. Imagine getting a whole teenager to kill your fucking mom because you’re too much of a little bitch to do it yourself. Grow up. Also, he’s so fucking whiny like oh my GOD just shut the fuck up, nobody cares what you have to say. His whole character and backstory was just horrible in my opinion.
13: Jill Roberts. Not a surprise to anyone. I hate her. I hate her and her boring ass character. Her two kills were boring and shitty and also I despise Emma Roberts. I will say nothing more about it.

TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME
tagged by @sophiedevreaux thank u you're so sweet 💖 now watch out, you're about to gain more knowledge of old british sitcoms than anyone other than me has ever needed or wanted
💛 the good life - the ultimate. the love of my life. the only show. if you want to feel better about everything ever, watch the good life. it's hilarious, it's ingenious, it's the 1970s, the cast are golden, and everyone is so terribly nice.
💛 scott & bailey - one of sally wainwright's great masterpieces, and probably my favourite of her shows these days, featuring truly incredible, wonderfully written milf detectives (meaning janet, gill, and julie. rachel is ... also there) catching murderers.
💛 gilmore girls - who doesn't wish they lived in stars hollow? i just want to eat at luke's every day, go to town meetings, attend all the little events. this show is so clever, so well-written, so comforting, so good. lorelai, emily, and luke my beloveds. let's just pretend season six never happened.
💛 2point4 children - possibly this should have been first bc honestly 2point4 children represents so much of my personality. it's fantastic. it's hilarious. the writing is exemplary. bill porter is a genius, a queen, and The Goal character to portray. if i were a tv trope, i'd be Deadpan Snarking, Long-Suffering Matriarch in an old british sitcom, of which she is the quintessential example. also, this show centres around a married couple named bill and ben. i told you, it's genius.
💛 the thin blue line - ben elton's great masterpiece. i'm not saying the young ones and blackadder aren't good too, bc they are, but the thin blue line is god tier. it's so great, so cleverly written, and so, so funny. i can recite whole scenes, and, yet, they're still so funny every time i rewatch. it's brilliant.
💛 dinnerladies - sometimes when i'm having a conversation about victoria wood people tell me they don't like dinnerladies, and i'm like what the fuck is wrong with you. i can recite most of this show by heart, i've seen it so many times. victoria wood was the most incredible observational comic, and this show is a masterpiece. it's hilarious, it's ingenious. i defy you to find a better, more insightful comic and / or writer than victoria wood. you can't do it. she was the greatest, and this show is the fucking best.
💛 broadchurch - what can i say, i really enjoy the west country, clever mysteries, great writing, lady detectives, raw emotions, and older lesbians (especially when they're as iconic as maggie radcliffe). they really combined a whole lot of my key interests in one brilliant tv programme.
💛 wentworth - the show that brought me back to tumblr after i was absent for years. it's dark, it's brilliant, it's female-driven, there are several sapphic women, and you never know what's coming next. also, bridget westfall is the most incredible character, and a lesbian who gives me so much validation, as well as being so incredibly beautiful i can't get over it (how @ libby tanner) and the love she + franky have for each other is also so incredible and beautiful to see.
feel free to ignore!! tagging @juliewlters, @alisonscotlock, @moxyphinx, @notprincehamlet, @pea-green, @grandselfmythology, @beesarthur

i’m watching the show “unforgotten” (season 1) and i’ve watched so many british shows that every single actor is recognizable to me. i’m constantly like
Tumblr media
even the lead actress, nicola walker, i recognize her specifically from her great performance in one of the seasons of “scott & bailey” (loved that show btw, always rewatch it when it comes on)

TV I Watched In 2023
Before I can even begin to answer survey questions about it, I have to remember what I actually watched. I have been tracking it month to month, but since I rarely finish an entire series or even a season within a month, all that data is stretched and scattered throughout the year and it takes a post like this to bring it all together. Does this need to be public? Probably not. But it is anyway!
Broken down by categories that are not, for the most part, genre:
INSTA-QUIT
Animal Control: 1x01
The Terror: 1x01-02
Quantum Leap (2022): 1x04
The Triangle (2005 miniseries): pt 1
SAMPLED, WILL COME BACK SOMEDAY
The Ranch: 1x01-02
Trinkets: 1x01
What If…?: 1x03 & 1x07
CURRENT SHOWS (SCRIPTED)
Abbott Elementary: S2
Night Court (2023)
That 90s Show
Ghosts (CBS): S2
Poker Face
Daisy Jones & The Six
Loki (full series)
Alaska Daily
Good Omens: S2
Big Sky: S2-3
La Brea: S2
Goosebumps (2023)
NEW TO ME
The Exes: 4x17-22, finishing what I started last year
Scott & Bailey: S3-5 (and a rewatch of S1)
The Night Manager (which I completely failed to reblog anything about because I was overwhelmed with joy; so good)
The Essex Serpent
Return to Cranford
Litvinenko
Slasher: S1
REALITY & GAME SHOWS
Survivor: S44-45
The Amazing Race: S32 & 35
The Chase: S3
Celebrity Jeopardy
Celebrity Family Feud: Chenoweth vs. Najimy
Celebrity Wheel of Fortune: Abbott Elementary cast
Cook at All Costs
Snack vs. Chef
Best Leftovers Ever
Pressure Cooker
The Traitors (both US and UK)
Snake in the Grass
Squid Games: The Challenge
Special Forces: World's Toughest Test: S2 (and 2 of S1)
Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team: season 15
(I can't explain why I will watch 7 junk food reality shows before I watch one genuinely good series when I have sooo many of the latter on my watch list. It used to be because I wrote about every episode of TV, and it's always hard to articulate positive feelings well, but now I guess I just have an emotional block about processing Great Stuff without even having something to show for it afterward.)
RANDOM REWATCHES
Various episodes: 30 Rock; Seinfeld; Friends; The Simpsons (S7 & 12 mostly); Community (S1-2 mostly)
That 70s Show: 1x01-19
Survivor: Gabon (S17)
The Amazing Race: S32
The Office: S9
CSI: 4x12
Primeval: New World: 1x01
Doctor Who: 4x01-02; 4x06; 4x12-13

In summary, 5 books, 49 movies, 64 tv shows of varying levels of engagement and 27 cultural experiences.
Easily the least number of books I've read in a single year since I could read. Mostly because it's hard and tiring for me to read with bad eyes and spending long days reading with my job. Interesting that I'm being drawn more to non-fiction than fiction these days.
Wow I watch a lot of tv and film. I really enjoyed Fresh off the Boat and multiple seasons of Below Deck this year. The right balance of entertaining and easy to wind down to and knit to after work.
I feel like I don't gig anywhere near as much as I used to, and that makes me sad. But I do like that I'm still doing on average a cultural thing every two weeks. Less gigs, more other types of culture and I'm definitely throwing lots of support behind the local culture scene.

Ok I'll bite should I watch Nancy Drew?
yes!! it's so much better than i expected it to be and the pilot is very strong! i binged the first three seasons in like a week and then immediately started a rewatch. it's not a perfect show by any means but it's definitely entertaining and easy. which, like, i don't know about you but i really needed that—something that would hold my attention but that wouldn't necessarily emotionally compromise me in a way that just leads to disappointment.
some selling points:
1.) the characters are not in high school. you may already know this but i did not so i was very pleasantly surprised to find it out. they basically did the exact thing i've been saying a lot of shows would benefit from which is to make the characters college-aged because having them be in high school does not serve the story in any way.
2.) nancy is the main character but it is largely an ensemble cast. all of the characters have their own lives and motivations. the story centers around nancy, but the characters do not. that's a hard line to walk and a lot of shows fail at it but this one does not.
3.) all of the characters have their own interpersonal dynamics and relationships with each other that make sense. in any given episode, the characters that are paired up is different and it's always good!
4.) the show does not get caught up in its own mythos or rules. this might sound like a criticism but i love it in this instance. the how is not important. does it matter that a tech billionaire shows up for one episode with all kinds of gadgets that are so futuristic they do not actually exist and if they did, they would realistically change the trajectory of the show? no. what matters is that nick kissed him fueling my bisexual hopes and dreams and also that his presence led to an important conversation about identity between several characters of color.
5.) the romantic pairings actually have more mileage on rewatch. i knew what the major fandom ship was before going into it so i was prepared for it to go there eventually but i was not at all expecting the route it took. tbh i was lukewarm on all of the relationships/pairings the first time around, which really just meant that i was not upset when any particular thing happened, but now that i'm rewatching it, i'm actually finding the two main pairings so much more rewarding??? i'm picking up on things i didn't notice before (even with the knowledge i had before going into it). they really were laying groundwork for both of them right from the pilot. so, high rewatch value is what i'm saying!
6.) scott wolf.
7.) scott wolf wearing bailey salinger's letterman jacket and riley smith wearing a motocross shirt.
tl;dr yes you should watch it

I just rewatched Scott and Bailey 3.8 for fic writing reasons. After years and many rewatches I still think that Sally Wainwrights dialogue is gold, even though she has killed two lesbians (one in this said episode). Nicola Walker’s and Amelia Bullmore’s acting is brilliant, and Pippa Haywoods voice makes me tremble. Suranne Jones is hot and beautiful and Leslie Sharp does her job well too. I seem to be coming back to these characters over and over again.

I've properly started Scott and Bailey now. It's a really good cop show! I thought it was a comedy though, I feel like you've mostly gifed funny scenes. It reminds me a bit of Homicide: Life on the Street, it really is fantastic.
YAAAY, ANON! IT IS AN AMAZING SHOW.
not comedy, though. but the funny bits are so golden and i feel like experiencing them more times (which is mostly why i do gifs, so i can often "rewatch" without having to seek the video part. is that weird or idk...? anyway, don't mind me)
the show deals with some heavy subjects at times and the characters have some serious problems and struggles, so it needs the levity from time to time.

a non-exhaustive list of reasons to keep going this week:
1. my wife is an early riser and a morning person; i am an early riser only by necessity, and very much not a morning person. each day i wake up and stumble into the kitchen and my wife has made coffee, has located my favorite mug, and has *poured hot water into the mug to pre-warm it for my coffee.* every morning, i get a little lump in my throat about these small daily gestures, this way that she has found to say ‘good morning, i love you’ in possibly the only language i can tolerate before sunrise.
2. sam texted me last night to tell me she was beginning a scott & bailey rewatch because of me (she will probably read this and so i say again: i’m sorry and you’re welcome) and then we talked for a while about grief and the maybe-someday end of this pandemic. and i thought about the first day we spent any real time together - that day, somehow now more than a decade ago, when we moved into an apartment that was bright and airy and unfurnished, and we made a nest of blankets and pillows and watched a movie and ordered dinner from what would become our favorite takeout place. just two tiny queer babies huddled together on the floor. i will get to hug her again soon, i think.
3. soph texted me today and the message started, ‘good morning, your personal attack today is...’ (followed obviously by something designed to make me howl about fictional women, as is her specialty). and after the howling, i was reminded again how good it is to have stories to invest in, to have friends with whom I can exchange paragraphs of unhinged ranting about fictional women, to have a small but cherished community for whom these investments and derangements are important and sustaining. part of taking care of myself right now looks like thinking deeply about relationships and having an escape hatch for my brain into fictional spaces, and it is just very good not to be alone in that.
4. my friends have a 3-year-old who believes the sun rises and sets with me. and yes, it is easy to love and be loved by a toddler, but it is still something like magic. whenever we are together she wants to tell me things, not because she has anything in particular to say, but because she wants to be near me. ‘this is a doorknob,’ she explained to me this weekend. ‘you twist it like this and it opens the door. this is a blanket, in case you get cold. this is my t-rex. his pronouns are he/they. i have to eat dinner now. will you come? i can’t eat without you.’ and so we eat peas and carrots together and she explains in great detail to me every single thing she can see from her chair. and i say ‘wow’ and i say ‘thank you for showing me that’ and i’m grateful to her because i can’t remember the last time anyone asked me to notice the shape of the leaves on a jade plant.
5. my mom is getting vaccinated today. she is an extremely religious conservative person who gets most of her news from facebook, so this is a Big Deal and the result of some not insignificant lobbying on my part. she called me yesterday to tell me she had an appointment and she said, ‘i’m terrified. i want you to know i’m only doing this because of you.’ and i said, ‘i know you are. i love you too, mom.”
