This is getting reblogged again so I just want to say that I said lobotomies were popular in the 50s, but I want to clarify that they weren’t just a thing in the 1950s. They were invented in 1935 by Moniz and Lima, and gained popularity throughout the 1940s. Rosemary Kennedy was lobotomized in 1941, though she was an earlier patient. The transorbital (icepick) lobotomy was invented in 1946 by Walter Freeman. Freeman preformed icepick 3,439 lobotomies in his life, and literally went on tour preforming them. He defended them and their use even long after they fell out of fashion in the late 1950s/early 60s. They stopped being popular (though there were always activists against them, btw. This wasn’t something everyone was on board with.) after the invention of some effective antipsychotics like lithium and once chlorpromazine gained popularity in the US.

All this is about America, btw. The Soviet Union banned lobotomies in 1950 so America was way behind. We had national lobotomy tours while they were already banned in most of Europe. USA #1 🇺🇸

Like holy shit (Brain facts below the cut)

Okay hi welcome to brain facts. So the fascinating thing about human brains is that the basic stuff is in the brain stem and towards the back of the brain, so things like breathing, digestion, and other stuff you do without thinking about it are all back there. The more complex stuff is in the front. Your frontal lobe in particular controls your speech (in an area called Broca’s area I think), motor function and personality. Less severe damage can result in lack of social awareness or increased impulsivity. But we aren’t talking about “less severe” damage so let’s get to the good stuff.

In the 1840s sometime, a man named Phineas Gage had a giant ass metal pole blown (with some sort of explosive gunpowder) through his head (entering under his cheek and exiting the top of his head) and survived. I don’t really think I can do justice how insane this is, but google it if you want to see a photo of a guy holding a rod that went through his head and a couple recreations of it. Gage was alive after this, and was mostly fine except for he had severe personality changes and intense epileptic seizures. What I’m getting at with this is that because the rod shot through his frontal lobe (FNaF reference) he was fine and actually survived about 13 years (just with the personality of an asshole) before he died of a seizure.

A lobotomy was an extremely popular practice in the 1950s that was intended to cure mental illness. Of course nobody knew what was going on back then so really sometimes they were just “curing” like hysteria or melancholy or whatever. The procedure, in its most popular form, involved sticking an ice pick up through a patient’s eye socket and just scrambling their brains (The frontal lobe) with it (extremely simplified). This often resulted in severe damage to their motor and speech skills, their personality, their thinking, etc. But it did make most people easier to deal with, so that’s good I guess. Arguably the most famous lobotomy patient (victim) is Rosemary Kennedy, JFK’s sister.

Okay, this is a FNaF account actually. So I’d like to call attention to a couple things Phone Guy says in reference to the Bite of ‘87. He says that Jeremy survived “without a frontal lobe” which is completely wild but like…probably possible? However it would lead to like total paralysis and complete inability to form coherent thoughts. And while in The Week Before, Ralph does say something about him “not talking anymore. Or doing much else.” And everyone does act like it’s a completely wild thing that he survived (which it is) but I feel like we should probably chalk “without” up to hyperbole, though you don’t have to if you don’t want to.

But even with it still like…partially intact some symptoms of severe injury to that big chunk of your brain are: short-term memory loss, loss of motor (both gross and fine) and speech skills, completely disorganized behavior and thinking, intense personality changes, creating false memories (confabulation, which sounds like a word I made up but it’s not) and probably the wildest one called anosogonia, which is where you just don’t realize that something is wrong with you (or the extent of it)

All this to say: nothing, really. I just really wanted to talk about this.

She was packing the last of her things, whilst her boyfriend was rambling on and on about the heat and how she needed to protect herself. She knows he means well but it’s seven in the morning, who has so much to say at this time?

“Did you know your brain is especially sensitive to heat?” Spencer starts again, a whole new fact. “High body temps can cause confusion, irritability, and eventually unconsciousness.”

“Okay, Spence. I love you, but it’s 7 in the morning and I’ve slept 5 hours. Can we do this after I have some coffee?” Yn kindly begs her boyfriend, as she yawns and rubs the sleep out of her eyes.

He’s quiet for about 5 minutes as he follows her to the kitchen. “Drinking coffee in hot weather can actually dehydrate you slightly because caffeine is a mild diuretic.” He stopped as he notices her confused expression.

“It increases urine output.” Spencer explained the word, and continues rambling when she nods understandably.

“So while one or two cups won’t harm most people, relying on coffee instead of water in the heat can increase your risk of dehydration.” Spencer rambles off, as Yn grabs a bottle of water from the fridge instead of the coffee she was about to drink.

“Thought you were getting coffee?” Spencer frowns.

“Changed my mind, my sweet genius.” She smiled, standing on her tippy toes to give him a kiss. “Need to make sure I don’t increase my urine output.” Yn teases, as he just looked confused.

The couple makes their way out of the house and get to Yn’s car, while Spencer is passenger princess again today. “So be sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours. SPF 30 or higher. Even if it’s cloudy! Did you put sunscreen on just now?” Spencer asks, for the third time this morning.

“Yes, sweet Spencer, I did.” Yn smiles as she gets in the car.

“And avoid energy drinks.” He gives her a knowing look. “They have caffeine, which can increase heart rate and mildly dehydrate you. But if you have to have caffeine, balance it with extra fluids.” And he continued to ramble on..

The team were called out to investigate a series of child abductions in Virginia, close to home this time luckily for the team. Hotch assigned both Spencer and Yn to interview the parents of the last missing child.

“We know-” Yn stumbled over her words, as she wiped the sweat off of her forehead. “We know this isn’t easy.” She gently tells the mother of the girl as she felt Spencer’s eyes on her.

“But anything you can remember, any detail, could help us find your little girl.” She practically breathes out, struggling with the heat.

“She was just… gone.” The mother started explaining, as Yn excused herself for a minute when she started to feel lightheaded.

Spencer looked back at her, with a concerned look, before trying to refocus on the mother’s story. “I looked away for one second at the park, and she.. she was gone.”

“That’s a very common tactic for abductors.” Reid started to explain, as he tried to spot his girlfriend somewhere but she disappeared when he turned around. “They often wait for a momentary distraction. It’s not your fault.” He calmly explains, trying to reassure her that it isn’t her fault.

The father started to get more angry. “How is that suppose to help?” He angrily points asks. “This doesn’t bring her back!” His voice raises even more.

“You’re ri-” Spencer started saying as he hears a loud thud from outside. “I’ll be right back.” He tells the parents, as he was already halfway out the door.

And that’s when he saw her, passed out on the floor.

Quickly grabbing his phone to call Hotchner, as he crouches to sit beside her and try to wake her up. “Need help here, now!” He basically yells into the phone.

“We’re on our way, Reid. What’s happened?” Hotchner calmly asks Reid, trying to understand why he’s so panicked.

“Yn, she, uh, passed out. I think a heatstroke, I need help now!” He explains between breaths, his brain completely shutting off and not being able to think straight anymore in this panicked state.

“Okay, stay calm. I’ll get an ambulance, move her to a cooler place and make sure to cool her down as much as you can. We’ll be there soon.” He explained quickly over the phone, as Spencer hangs up quickly and does exactly what his boss just told him to.

It’s been an hour since Yn passed out, currently she’s in a hospital bed with cooling blankets and the AC cranked up. And Spencer Reid sat on the chair next to the bed, only focusing on her breathing.

He’d been sat there for as long as he could, in the same position as the team was sat in the waiting room - expect for Derek and Emily who took over the interview and would arrive at the hospital as soon as they could.

“Spence-” You wince, your throat hurting. Spencer gasped, as he finally saw you waking up.

“Oh, you’re okay. Don’t talk, I know it hurts.” He kindly tells her, his hand grabbing hers as he rubs his thumb over the back of her hand. “Dehydration dries out the tissues in your throat and vocal cords. which makes talking feel scratchy, or even painful.” Spencer explains.

“Wha-” She tries to say but her throat hurts, so she just looks at him with tears in her eyes.

“You passed out. From heatstroke. Which, by the way, I warned you about this morning—multiple times” He gives her the ‘I told you so’ look. “I said, and I quote, ‘If your skin stops sweating and feels hot, that’s bad.’ And then what happened? You stopped sweating and collapsed”

“They gave you two liters of IV fluids. You were severely dehydrated. You also weren’t wearing a hat, or sunscreen.” Spencer rambled on, as Yn just looked at him guilty. It hurt to know he was only trying to protect her from this and she got in this exact situation.

“I’m not saying ‘I told you so’… except I am, just a little, because I did. I told you to stay in the shade. I told you to take breaks. You didn’t. So now you’re here. And I-” His voice breaks. “-I was scared, when I saw you lying there.”

He looks back at his girlfriend to see her crying, and immediately feels guilty.

“Just… don’t do that again, okay? Next time I offer you water, just drink it, no complaints.” Spencer smiles, giving Yn a kiss on her forehead.

“I love you, even when you don’t always listen to me.”

Isagi could only huff out as he tucked his phone back into his pockets. He should’ve expected this honestly, considering he’s known the man for years now.

Bachira had never had so much fun in an interview before. He couldn’t wait to go home and tell you all about it and then watch it with you when it aired. But for now, he’d enjoy messing with his friends like this. And now that Kunigami was up next, he was looking forward to it even more.

G-Schmitt: 1980s / disbanded

Fav songs: Catholic, Future Daze, Belladonna.

The most traditional gothic rock band in my opinion. If you like Siouxsie you should try this (and in not saying that just bc the vocalist is female) but not in the sense that it’s a Siouxsie cover band- it’s more like they run on parallel lines to each other. Their CDs are expensive secondhand nowadays.

Menopause: 2016 / active

Fav songs: Shadow Dance, Evil.

I’m actually not super familiar with Menopause, but I really enjoy what I have heard. It’s industrial gothic.If you like Skinny Puppy you might like Menopause (although it’s not quite as harsh as SP). There was another japanese industrial band called Pineal which is supposed to be great but I can’t find recordings of them anywhere >:(

Madame Edwarda- 1980s / active again!

Fav songs: Princess Reta, Macbeth.

Good old gothic rock that I could see being played at an 80s night at a goth club. It’s crazy to see them on the lineup alongside modern bands in the japanese gothic scene. Not my most listened to band but deserves a spot for being so influential and for coming back from the dead.

Soft Ballet: 1980s-2003 / disbanded

Fav song: White Shaman, Smashing the Sun, Twist of Love.

Oh man. Soft Ballet is so fun. It’s the predecessor band of Buck-Tick (who I won’t go into but they are legendary). It’s upbeat synth music that is very catchy, think like Depeche Mode. It probably isn’t considered to be J-goth, but goths will love this band. I walked for 2 hours fuelled by a soft ballet & buck tick playlist which was a bad idea because it alternated making me want to sing and making me want to cry. That’s all I’ll say on that.

Lucifer Luscious Violenoue: 1990s- 2002 / disbanded

Fav songs: Tsubasa Orareta Vampire, Slowdive, Tsuki to Bara

One of my fav artists of all time. LLV was Lucifer’s solo project but I also recommend the band Gille Loves which she was the vocalist for. Really pretty melodic goth with a solemn feel. The kind of music you’d make if you were trapped in a beautiful tower for all eternity. I can’t say enough good things. I hope she is happy out there somewhere.

†13th Moon†: 2000s / active

Fav songs: Countdown to Suicide, Roses are Dead, Violet Calm.

A deathrock love letter to the western goth scene. They sound like an amalgamation of every goth band. I follow them on instagram and was pleasantly surprised that they shared a cover of one of my longtime favourite songs ‘I can’t escape myself’ by The Sound. They clearly know their shit. I read an interview where they were adamant that they are a goth band and NOT a visual kei band, and hate that comparison. A lot of j-goths see vkei bandmen as posers who dress alternative as a costume for lives and only do it to get girls. I don’t know if that opinion is still popular but it is worth noting that they are separate and so I might piss them off with the last one on my list:

Velvet Eden: 1998 - 2016 / disbanded.

Velvet Eden is my favourite band of all time so I don’t care that it’s not J-goth. It has an irresistible sexy electronic sound that feels like a dark foggy goth club. Regarding his mom honestly I think people, whether they know it or not, have a largely misogynistic view of her.

By all accounts she has a strong personality, is very unapologetically vocal about things that concern her, and won’t people walk all over her or her son. If she was the meek or quiet type, people wouldn’t be saying half the things they say about her.

As for the rumors of her being controlling I believe it’s slightly true, especially when it comes to money, and honestly with a son like him I think it’s ok to be a little overbearing bc at the end of the day he grew up in a crazy world full of overindulgence and excess.

Some tidbits about her and his dad and how they raised him:

- Once when he was little, he witnessed someone getting bullied in school and stayed silent. When his mom heard she made him wear clown shoes to school the next day as punishment for not doing the right thing and standing up for the person getting bullied.

- His parents were tough on him when it comes to education, they didn’t want him to neglect it for football. When Kylian said he wanted to drop out of school and focus on football full time his Dad got super pissed lol. His mom has said that she wanted to him to go to HEC Paris and become a businessman, not a footballer. When he started going to Clairefontaine (French football academy), they made sure he did well in classes there and even got him to do extra lessons with his aunt and uncle who were teachers.

- As I said, they were controlling when it comes to money. At Monaco, when he was earning 80k per week they gave him a weekly allowance of €200 😭 Kylian himself said he’s grateful they did that and he has a healthy relationship with money thanks to them. In Paris, He was talking to an influencer girl asking to meet up at a hotel and she said she’d only do it if he got her a Chanel bag, Kylian said “No, sorry. I can’t buy you a bag” lol. Also at a charity auction, his bid won and when the time came to pay he had to awkwardly wait for his dad to come and pay. Also in 2021, his mom said in an interview he only recently learned how to use a debit card. So clearly this control over his money didn’t stop when he became an adult, I hope it’s stopped now bc it’s a little embarrassing to be a 26 YO and not have control over your own money lol.

- She said she’s made sure to raise her sons to be feminists. She’s also talked about how it was a deliberate choice to make his team of lawyers women, and that it was her idea at first and when she told Kylian he agreed. (This reminds of me Jalen Hurts and his all-women team)

- Some other cute/interesting things his mom has said: He sleeps so much in his free time his family calls him ‘the Koala’ lol. Sometimes he puts on disguises and walks around outside freely without a bodyguard. She used to make him do the dishes after he won the World Cup, and when he was a kid after he came back from the Madrid trip Zidane took him on she made him clean her classrooms to ‘bring him back down to earth’.

Other family tea: His big bro Jires was a w-h-o-r-e who cheated on Melissa a lot. Now they’ve broken up and he lives in the US with his other family. (Yes he has a whole other wife and kids ppl are not aware of, Kylian has a whole other set of nieces and nephews lol). That’s why we don’t see him as much anymore. I think it’s nice that Kylian and the family is so close to Melissa, bc when people divorce in laws usually take the side of the son and disappear out of the woman’s life.

It’s true that he’s very protective towards Ethan. Last year when PSG found out he wouldn’t be renewing they iced Ethan out from the squad, and Kylian got mad and got in an argument with the sporting director over that.He does spoil him too, I’m pretty sure it was Kylian who flew out Ethan’s girlfriend and friends to Dubai for his birthday

hi! So, this is such an interesting and cute little question because I feel like angus is definitely the type to make sure you’re doing alright through little acts of service. He’ll always remind you to drink water, setting a glass in front of you if he hasn’t seen you drink any that day. He takes great pride in being the proactive one out of the two, which means he always has a spot he wants to take the two of you out on, and he’ll plan everything to a T to make sure you can take all the time you need to get ready.

Besides the obvious “boyfriendoftheyear” behavior like guiding you towards the inside of the sidewalk as you walk hand in hand towards a movie at your local theatre, or holding the door open for you at your fav bar to watch a cool little local band play a gig, he always makes sure to carry a handkerchief in his jean pocket that he infuses with a few drops of lavender essential oil. He once read in a woman’s weekly it’s supposed to help with nerves and it was meant to be an old housewives trick but it seems to mean a lot to you and anything for his girl of course.

When you guys go out to eat, he takes it upon himself to order for you, per your request. He has a good feel for your taste, and cravings and he’s never ordered a dish you don’t like. He’ll even make sure to call ahead and tell the hostess about any allergies or dietary restrictions you might have. To everyone in his life his attitude since you’ve gotten together is a great departure from the usual nonchalant smart ass they know and occasionally love, but doting and caring looks good on him.

You’ll always feel like he’s got your back and is ready to advocate for you. Whether it’s asking a waiter to top off your drink or to have a dish remade because it wasn’t up to your standards, he’s always ready and willing to keep you as chill as possible. On really really bad days, the ones where you feel like the world is caving in around you and you can’t see the end in sight, after he helps you meet your most basic needs, a warm bath, a small plate with some fruits, some chips, dip and maybe some cheeses, (an act he adopted from his dad do the same for his mom when she was pregnant with him.) He’ll have you pop on your (his) favorite comfy crewneck, pop you on the back of his bike, and pedal down the block and back as the sun sets. The cool air and the rhythm of the pedals going up and down your street littered with gorgeous trees and even more gorgeous gardens soothes your mind in an instant.

Sometimes he’ll whistle a little tune for you, his favorite is the Charlie Brown theme song, sometimes he’ll ask about your day and let you vent or sometimes he won’t say anything at all and let you regulate at your own pace. But always, your nights end with the coziest cuddle with all the lights in your room turned off, only a sliver of a street light peeking through your curtain. He’ll trace his fingers across your features and leave whispers of kisses and sweet nothings behind as the both of you are lulled to sleep……so basically he’s a cutie pie.

Could we hear something about your ocs

- if Paris had’ve been a Trojan from the start his life would’ve turned out so differently. Literally everything about him would be different and maybe he would’ve struggled with his ego a tiny bit bc of how confident he was leaving high school but he probably would’ve made court eventually if he hadn’t started out in the Ravens.

- Rowan cannot talk to reporters or do interviews. He physically can’t be himself or be honest when there’s a camera in his face and he will always feel like a fraud because of how hard he’s trying to be perfect for the press.

- Paris is the first person who realises that something is going on between Lilya and June. He’s having his own romantic struggles at the time and is burning the ear off of Lilya when she tells him to just ignore his feelings if he doesn’t want to feel them and he responds, “What, like you’re doing to June?” because he’d noticed how she gets when she’s around her and she gets SO mad at him because of it that he just knows she’s down bad

- Bran can’t watch horror movies. Rowan loves them.

- Rowan will have a visceral reaction if his hair is touched. His first accidental fight in PSU was because a girl was complimenting his hair and grabbed it because she wanted to feel how soft it was

- Paris blushes really easily

- Lilya struggles to keep emotions off her face. If she reacts to something someone says it’s because she literally can’t stop herself from frowning or giving them a dirty look

- Bran calls people randomly and Rowan gets so annoyed by it. She won’t text and asks if he’s busy. She’ll just call him or FaceTime him randomly and he always answers because he’s anxious and worries something is wrong but usually she’s just bored and wants to talk. She finds it quite hard to just be alone doing nothing/relaxing. He doesn’t really mind it but he feels so bad not answering that he’ll literally be like. In the middle of something Super Important and he’ll answer like “shut up you’re going in my pocket we can talk in five minutes” or “I’m literally peeing give me two minutes and I’ll call you back”

i love the depth you give to your characters and even if they are in messy situations/relationships within the group they're still friendly with eachother. I think that y/n group of friends is SO interesting, their dynamics are very interesting. For example, you said in one of your asks that jaemin and yangyang (i love him) (i need scenes with these 2 together) hang out and stuff, and you could think that because he's fucking yn that could bother jaemin bcs he's bff with jeno, her literal ex (like i said everythings messy and i live for that). Or how the girls include nahyun 🙄 even with her bitch personality. Like doyoung said they're friends that fuck and they kinda do lmao but they're super mature about it? I love that for them.

i’m genuinely so happy that you picked up on this because this is exactly what i always hoped people would take from back to you. yes, it’s emotional and sexy and high-stakes and messy, but at its core, it’s a universe. i wanted it to feel lived-in. i wanted it to feel like these characters had entire lives beyond what was on the page, entire histories that didn’t start when the fic did and won’t end when it finishes. none of them are surface level. they carry grudges quietly, they stay loyal in ways they can’t always justify, they self-sabotage, they forgive when they shouldn’t, they say the wrong thing and still mean well. they know how messy the lines are between friendship and romance and sex and resentment, and instead of pretending those lines don’t exist, they live inside them. they fall in love and stay in love and grieve the versions of each other that disappear. that’s why i love asks like this so much because it gives me space to explain all the little undercurrents and dynamics that aren’t always visible in the main narrative, but are always there under the surface.

jaemin is the perfect example of this. he’s a deeply fair and emotionally intelligent character, someone who observes before reacting. yes, he and jeno are brothers in everything but blood. they were glued together from the start, they’ve slept in each other's rooms more times than they can count, they’ve been through heartbreak and championships and personal loss together. jeno is his person. full stop. but that’s exactly why jaemin doesn’t enable him. he’s always been the one to call jeno out, to ground him when his anger starts eclipsing everything else. jaemin knows jeno inside out, knows how much of his silence is pain and how much of it is pride. he’s honest with him even when it hurts, even when jeno doesn’t want to hear it. and just because jaemin doesn’t always verbalise it doesn’t mean he’s ever blind to what jeno’s done or the damage he’s caused — he just doesn’t believe love is conditional on perfection. he knows jeno fucks up, and he still shows up, because that’s what loyalty means to him. and at the same time, he never lets that loyalty become tunnel vision.

that’s why he can still be close with yangyang. it’s not because he’s trying to be neutral or avoid conflict — jaemin is not a fence-sitter — it’s because he trusts his own judgement. he knows yangyang’s heart. he knows that despite the complications, yangyang isn’t opportunistic or spiteful. they’ve had a close bond since college, and jaemin has always appreciated how yangyang treats y/n. not just with care, but with respect. even in the messiest situations, jaemin can separate what someone is doing from why they’re doing it. and in this situation, he knows yangyang isn’t the villain. he also knows that protecting jeno doesn’t mean isolating y/n or pretending her hurt doesn’t matter. jaemin is always emotionally multitasking. he holds the whole web in his hands, and even when it tangles, he doesn’t drop the thread.

there are so many tiny details about the friendships in this fic that i don’t always get to put on the page. like how karina always calls mark after a job interview, even if it went badly. or how donghyuck and chenle keep an old notebook where they write roast drafts for everyone in the group, just for fun. how areum has taken some of the only candid photos y/n actually loves of herself. how ningning and shotaro send each other outfit check pics every single morning like it’s sacred ritual. how y/n and mark still share playlists the way they did back in college, but now they don’t even say anything, they just add tracks when they’re thinking of each other. or how jeno, no matter where he is in the world, sends areum updates on his training schedule, not because she asks, but because he knows she still tracks every sports story that might mention him. all of these people are connected. they’re not a flawless group, they’re not immune to pain or jealousy or exhaustion. but they are family. in every sense of the word.
