Guess what? I've got more Jamil x reader for y'all. You can also find this on ao3. No warnings, just 866 words of kinda fluffy(?) caretaking stuff with gender-neutral reader.

At this point, you know Jamil’s schedule almost as well as he does. So, when you have the chance, you head to Scarabia’s kitchen, hoping to spend some time with Jamil while he and the other students prepare dinner. 

However, when you enter, it takes you but a moment to notice Jamil’s uncharacteristic fumbling and the tired look in his eyes. The way Jamil’s chopping the vegetables has you worried about him cutting himself with that knife he’s usually so adept with, and it seems it’s only force of habit that’s keeping him on track.

You frown, and when your eyes meet Jamil’s, you can already see him put his guard up.

So he knows what state he is in, huh? And still, here he is.

It seems Jamil is reading your thoughts, all of him telling you drop it before any words are even said.

At least he still lets you lean in and give a quick kiss to his cheek in greeting.

“Hello love. Do you still have a lot on your agenda for today?” you ask, keeping your tone low for at least some semblance of privacy in the busy kitchen.

“Nothing I can’t handle,” is the response you get.

Of course.

It takes a little more pestering before Jamil actually answers your question. Your lips purse. That list is far too long to your liking.

You take a moment to think, juggling your own plans and to-do list against the urgency of the things Jamil mentioned.

“Will Kalim be eating from that?” you ask, pointing at the food Jamil is preparing.

“Yes.”

“Alright, I won’t be touching that one, then. I’ve gotta do a few things but I’ll be back when you’re done here.”

“Don’t,” Jamil says with a glare, clearly aware of what you’re thinking.

Yet even his disapproving look doesn’t have the usual weight behind it.

“Yes. I will,” you say firmly, even as your heart curls inwards with another bout of concern.

Really, when did he get so tired?

And how did you not notice it earlier?

You leave the kitchen before Jamil can protest further, hurrying through the dorm corridors to find Kalim.

Soon you have an enthusiastic – and concerned – supporter for your plans. You have Kalim point out a few reliable Scarabia students to help with a few of the most urgent matters Jamil mentioned – cleaning up the common areas, delivering some paperwork to Crowley, preparing some dorm-wide notices – while you see to Kalim getting his school supplies in order for the following day. You even recruit a couple of third years to help Kalim with his homework.

You’ll see to the rest tomorrow – after all, you do also have a boyfriend to look after.

Your conversation over dinner can hardly be called anything else than an argument – despite Kalim’s best attempts at acting as a moderating force between you two. It is very tempting to ask Kalim to tell Jamil to take the rest of the day off – it’s not like Jamil would be willing to openly disobey a direct order. Still, you really don’t need to remind Jamil of his position on top of everything else that you’re already doing more or less against his wishes.

Eventually, however, Jamil’s had a square meal, the most urgent things on his to-do list are being taken care of, and you’ve managed to drag him to his bed.

“I really wish you wouldn’t push yourself so hard,” you murmur, your arms wrapped tightly around Jamil. You’re telling yourself you really do just want to cuddle, to offer some respite to Jamil. Still, there might also be a part of you worried that if you were to let go, he’d just jump up and get back to working himself to the bone.

Yet, for all his protestations, just the fact that you’ve gotten Jamil to lay down with you speaks volumes of his current exhaustion.

“I can’t just leave my duties, albi. You know this.”

“Making yourself too indispensable, is what you’re doing,” you protest.

Oh, you know it’s not so simple. Not with his background, not with all the expectations and assumptions.

But sometimes you really wish it would be.

Jamil merely scoffs in response to your words.

Still, it is undeniable that he is slowly beginning to relax in your arms, slowly bringing his head closer to yours. His eyes are starting to flutter, too.

“I will still need to help Kalim with his homework, at the very least.”

You wonder who he is trying to convince more, you or himself.

“Amin and Khalil are helping him. They’re basically top of their classes, aren’t they? I’m sure they’ve got it.”

Still, Jamil frowns.

You sigh. He really is not letting go, is he?

“Do you want me to go supervise?” you ask.

And leave you, unsaid yet hanging there right after your words.

“Don’t,” Jamil eventually says, the word barely more than a breath.

It seems he has accepted his fate.

You softly caress Jamil’s hair, listening to his softening breathing.

And when you wake up, wholly unaware of having been lulled to sleep in the first place, it’s to the lightest of touches from Jamil’s fingers.

thinking about how mishandled the herb brides are because like. The Text tells us they're not sexual beings (P1 mentions them being virgins, engaged to the Earth, and not to be touched even by their husbands, almost, for a lack of a better word and to conjure an image more than anything, priestess-types) and that their dances are nonsexual and sacred (all all true and correct) WHILE. giving them detailed / 3D modeled nipples. topless. clothes very conveniently torn [in ways that would be unrealistic for actual dancing like in the fucking moshpit]. all pretty thin hairless white-passing blemishless 20-something women. being already sexualized as white-passing asian women, but if they looked more like other NPC models/members of the Kin like the Kayura models (which to me would make more sense because they are never mentioned to be mixed in the way Artemy, an indigenous man who's blonde blue eyes due to being mixed, is [while still very much being indigenous and it being a central part of his story]), it would be even more obvious and would steer even more into Very Blatant fetishization of asian women. and then one asks, are they white-passing because they're sexualized? are they sexualized because they're white-passing? was it an admission of guilt to not make them look like Kayura model, because it would be too obvious then? or is it an admission of lust for women more white-passing? is it about beauty in the eye of the beholder?

then there's bewildering and dehumanizing lore of members of the Kin being non-humans, through the existence of the Worms (literally half-soil), them being a (more or less literal) hivemind, and that being "less human"/closer to the earth (nice_dichotomy_what_lies_outside_of_it png but also... the game touches on that...) immunizes them to the Earth's disease... and yet the Brides look like women... pretty thin hairless white-passing blemishless 20-something women who someone found wise to give 3d modeled nipples to, still good for the ritual cutting... do you hear how i'm going mad yet...

Quick update

Seeing as BioWare has decided to take a rather curious approach to marketing in which they tease the game by spoiling major plot points and lore revelations about it before we get a chance to play the game, explore it and find things out on our own as the story progresses...I've decided to pretend I did not see any of it and will not comment on it. I'm avoiding any further spoilers.

I'm not sure how much is left of IGN's exclusive coverage for the rest of September, or what they'll do in October (because they're really leaving less and less to the game itself).

For the time being I'll be mostly focusing on Vows&Vengeance as it's side content set previous to game events and will introduce the companions allegedly without spoiling anything for the game.

If the CC is revealed before release I might comment on that but I'm not making promises.

I kept telling myself "if they're ok revealing this now that must mean the game has so much more stuff going on" but there's a limit to everything and I'm not sure I can keep doing that kind of heavy lifting in their favour.

I want to play the game, meet the companions myself, explore the different areas myself, uncover the new lore and solve the mysteries by myself, as I play the game.

complaining abt a little life under cut because ppl on ig are still obsessed w it apparently -_- shit book

like putting aside other issues w yanagihara, i do not think a little life is as worthless as other ppl make it out to be and i stand by my 2.5 star rating. like, imo you should read it as a horror story of sorts about a man who, after horrible traumatic experiences, just refuses to seek help and work on getting better and how his choice to not do those things affect his life and hurt the people around him who love him. ofc none of the things that happen are his fault yet he continues to blame himself and see himself as ruined because of these events both from his childhood and adult life. The writing itself was good, the character voices were distinct enough and descriptions were well done (though i do agree w the person who said that she should be writing travel blogs/advertisements rather then novels because there is no reason for her to go street by street in nyc; it gets egregious at times). She does a good job in slowely revealing the information abt Judes past to us in a way that is agonizingly drawn out but rarely frustratingly slow. Judes line of thought is believable and thats the main thing that she needed to do and she did it well despite how frustrating it is at times. But thats from the outside looking in ofc and its supposed to be that Jude is behind this wall out of reach from both everyone in his life and the audience and it works well. like can she make emotional moments? yes. Does that mean that they are examples of good writing? yeah no. Like, its completely egregious in its torture of this guy to the point of unbelievability. At some point she should have just said "yeah i can get the same point across while cutting this scene and that one too etc". Like, not to discount people's experiences but when writing a book thats like focused on hyperrealism present day then you need to not prioritize the torture porn over a well paced, believable story. Then on top of that its like ofc this guy went to one ivy league school adn then harvard law and also some other ivy league for a masters and ofc his whole friend group became immensly successful in each of their chosen careers etc etc like okay alright whatever. Becomes eye roll inducing at some point like i get that theyre in nyc and we see their slow rise up from barely affording their appartment to becoming rich but still was everything necessary. idk its a nitpick kinda not really. Beyond that its 13 r.easons why levels of unnecessary graphic depictions that add nothing (like im fine w gore or depictions of injury but the first time was enough not every single scene finding new metaphores and descriptions to carry). Was just drawn out like she enjoyed tortoring this guy lol. anyways bad novel it is torture porn etc but not as competely worthless as other make it but if you put it on your best books ever list youre objectively wrong and need to have a better metric for if a book was good beyond "made me sad" lmfao. also no one should read this book it sucks.

     but like most choices he's made, he was wrong to keep his hunger to himself. now he's frozen where he stands before their target's would-be victim, talons digging into his palms and teeth nearly biting his tongue in two. the taste of his own blood is nothing compared to the smell of the trembling man's. he's uttering something kaigaku doesn't catch, too focused on the gash across his leg that's left him immobilized and helpless. he can't think straight; it's like the blood is singing, beckoning him closer, and the only reason his self-restraint doesn't fall to pieces is that just as he takes a step forward, there's another body obstructing his way.

     she smells of blood, too, but it's fainter, nearly concealed by ash and sweat and something familiar. it doesn't fully register that it's nicolette standing in front of him at first. he just knows she's in the way, and he's so damn hungry. fangs reveal themselves in a crimson-tinted snarl, when---

     " hey, hey, kai! "

     that's... that's her nickname for him. he's never told her, but he likes it. teruko used to call him that, too.

     nicolette stands there with a hand outstretched as though to keep him where he is, brow furrowed and purple gaze worried. his snarl fades only to be replaced by a grimace. the blood isn't singing anymore -- it's screaming at him, wondering why he hasn't ripped through both of these humans already. it's what demons are meant to do, so why shouldn't he? monsters don't mind ending lives, even revel in it, so what makes him any different?

     calloused hands cradle his cheeks, and kaigaku nearly tears away ( she can’t be so close! he’ll hurt her! ). his own hands immediately grip her wrists, unaware of the scratches he gives her in his panic, but in the end, kaigaku can’t bring himself to pull away from nicolette. instead, he squeezes his eyes shut and focuses on the thumbs gently brushing across his skin, how warm her palms are. it’s okay, nicolette says. this isn’t you. he’s just hungry, right? she gets a little cranky when she’s hungry, too. it’s okay.

     “ you won’t hurt him. ” she sounds so sure and confident that he opens his eyes to meet her gaze ( how can she still look at him like that, like he’s deserving of her care? even when he’s like this? ). “ you don’t want to. ”

     he doesn’t. he wants so badly to stop.

     it takes a few more moments, a few more reassurances, but the smell of blood grows more bearable. his hunger still rumbles in his stomach like an impatient beast, but he no longer feels he’ll succumb to its gnashing teeth. nicolette is right -- he doesn’t want to hurt that man. he doesn’t want to be the monster who takes what he wants at the expense of others. he’s been that monster, and he hates it.

      “ i should... i’ll wait outside. ” how awkward he feels as he pulls away ( and how cold, too ). how many more times will nicolette have to see kaigaku lose control? he turns to leave, teal eyes firmly focused on the ground, and quietly -- almost too quietly for her to hear -- he utters, “ i’m sorry. ”

touch starvation lmfao. real talk i feel like i go the jane austen route — like, i describe feelings and movement and ofc incorporate dialogue but when it comes to describing scenery, i tend to be sparse. i'll give you hints abt the architecture of a space but not the color of its walls, ya know? usually. like the sun spends a lot of time on how fkcn red the palace is.

i think also themes of connection, forming bonds, and leaning on one another. the scariness and necessity of vulnerability. how self-sufficiency and hyper-competence can be extremely destructive.

i'm struggling to think of one b/c i feel like i only wouldn't write tropes that i don't like? and if i don't like them i usually don't seek them out? so i therefore forget they exist. maybe a/b/o? a/b/o tends to go deep into the explicit side of things, which is not for me as a reader or writer, so i don't think i'd write it
