MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — A local Ukrainian re-experiences home after not seeing it since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Anastasiia Sliusarenko moved from Ukraine to Myrtle Beach about 11 years ago, and while she may not be in Ukraine fighting, she is here advocating for Ukraine locally.

She is a South Carolina Ukrainian advocate with Razom, a nonprofit Ukrainian-American human rights organization.

Anastasiia got back from Ukraine on Friday and said though she sees photos and videos of what’s happening, experiencing it was important to her.

Sliusarenko said, “Now I don't need to make it up, I'm not going to be lying when I say there are bombing civilians because I have seen it.”

She said she wishes she could be with her parents in Ukraine, but is with them fighting the battle here.

“I know that I am a part of this fight as well, I am fighting with what I can with words, with my voice, with my presence. so it makes me feel like I'm useful during this fight," she said.

She told ABC 15 that Ukraine has changed a lot since she was last there, but the people’s perseverance has not.

“When the siren is going off outside my mom is saying she is not even lifting her head, she says I don't have time for you Russian terrorists," she said. "This is what she’s saying I need to finish cooking this soup for my husband. this is the attitude the strength, the sense of humor that is still present.”

Sliusarenko will be in Washington DC next week for the Ukraine Action Summit Meeting with all South Carolina representatives including Congressmen Russell Fry from our district.
