i get a lot of my fic recs from other friends since i don't really go out and search on my own all too much for this fandom. but there are lots of great works out here! i will be listing out some of my favorites :3 mostly hc but a couple general mcyt ones that i think are an excellent read no matter what. all of the fics i'm listing will be genfic without ships!

also i just realized a lot of my bookmarks are grian-centric which is funny i guess because i am admittedly quite picky about content of my other favorites and grian just tends to have the most content in the fanbase. hope that'll be alright

the last days of the free angel of carrows by @theminecraftbee - loved stuffed bird? here's another great longfic by second! this one is about joe and cleo in an urban fantasy mystery setting. again, second writes our beloved hermits into an captivating au!

leaping and hopping on a moonshadow by @lunarblazes - a fantasy au by luna my beloved! pearl suddenly gains magical powers and goes on a quest to find her long-lost friend grian who might know what's happening to her. she meets a lot of familiar faces along the way!

Recall by @redwinterroses - hey, i was the artist for this one! :D mumbo goes missing, so grian and scar search for him. they find that grumbot has been up to some... things along the way. the fic isn't finished but i think the chapters red put out is worth a read if you don't mind leaving off on a cliffhanger because it really is super interesting

dramaturgy by wormcity - a universe where gem and pearl join in a season 7 that was never finished. mumbo became the mayor, but the turf war went so very wrong afterwards. admittedly i have not finished reading this yet because ummm short on time xD but it's super interesting with a lot of layers of drama(turgy hahaha)!

the wheels on the bus by sparxwrites - a hilarious post-s8 oneshot about grian being a little shit towards the watchers. one of the first fics i've read from this fandom and i still love it

a body is an object by ruffboi - grian is a mimic, and pearl's arrival in s8 shakes him up. she hasn't seen him in a while and is quite upset to learn that the grian she knew died a long time ago. a great read for familial connections and conflict of friendships!

Goatman and the Rift by TheDepressedCanary - doc's eldritch powers start acting up when the rift appears. what shenanigans will ensue?

other mcyt fics/crossovers:

late at night, when the stars don't look quite right by @lunarblazes - an excellent empires s1 and hermitcraft crossover longfic, where grian lands into the server and is discovered by pearl! very great worldbuilding and relationships, i especially love the dynamic between gri and pearl and pearl and gem :D

every new discovery is just a reminder by amaranthinecanicular - grian begins pulling alternate versions of the hermits from the life series into the server. he does save a lot of them, but at what cost? it does end on a cliffhanger but this is genuinely one of the most captivating oneshots i've ever read... argghhh

The Fair and the Brave and the Good by @slashmagpie - an afterlife smp longfic centered around the shelby, scott, and sausage. i have never watched afterlife smp before in my LIFE and this is still one of my favorite pieces of literature ever. the characters and worldbuilding is impeccable and perfect if you like something dark with themes of hope and renewal.

Two Can Keep a Secret (If One of Them is Red) by anonymous secretmcblog - a 3L oneshot! ren suspects grian has stockholm syndrome with his pact to stay with scar, but his expectations are wrong. a truly excellent read and one of them first fics i've read! i still go back to reread it from time to time

dog at the door by fluffy_papaya & iamsolarflare - a longfic where doc and ren take a trip on a van on their way to s8. ren, however, is not quite himself, and doc has to learn to befriend the red king.

devil town is colder in the summertime by @bananasofthorns - a oneshot from a 100hsmp/life series d&d au! team BEST ventures into a cursed evil fucked up forest. uh oh.

Interview with the Aftermath by @ranchersrevenge (wanderlasts) - the last life contestants are invited for an interview. the responses vary greatly.

stars, smoke, and stolen car keys by wormcity - a 100hsmp modern au oneshot where grian, scar, and joel go on a hike. it doesn't go quite as they expected.

the beehive state by amaranthinecanicular - a dsmp oneshot after wilbur moves to utah. tommy visits him, and the two reconnect. i have to say i stopped following dsmp a long time ago but this fic made me BAWL. i don't even think you need to know any of the characters that well to really enjoy just how amazing the writing itself is

Can't Go Back (This Time) by @duckmumbo (musicaltvbooks) - soup group goes end raiding and accientally finds themselves in afterlife smp. nothing goes wrong, surely! also admittedly i havent finished reading this either but roy i swear i will. this is a great read nevertheless and the soup group dynamic is impeccable!

TommyInnit's unbeatable method of avoiding sudden death by eneliii - on the train of dsmp fics, this is the superhero au longfic that inspired my own hc superhero au, vdhau. it's a lot of funny shenanigans with tommy and his friends. the fic does take a dark turn at the end, but that can be skipped entirely (as said by eneli herself) if you just want the wholesome aspects.

if you don't mind a little self promo, here are some of my fics!

it takes two to play (the game of mutual secrecy) - the aforementioned hermitcraft hero au. this installment is centered around xisuma and evil x as brothers resolving their issues through hero work and solving the mystery of welsknight's disappearance :D there are other works that are set in the same universe if you're interested for more!

how to form the ultimate besties dynamic: an unreliable tutorial by hypnotizd - a oneshot! hypno is a warlock who goes treasure hunting under the sea. he meets a guardian who later becomes his unlikely friend.

smoke and mirrors, the hunt perseveres - grian's arrival in empires s2 unwittingly brings the watchers' suspicions with him. cue jimmy freaking out and a lot of shenanigans.

ballad of etho’s lab - my newest installment! a oneshot about etho's storied life as the redstone god.

i'm also currently working on the sequel to the game of mutual secrecy and a new (well not exactly new since i made concept art for it) au called private detective gem tasey! these will likely be released sometime late january or february. have fun with these fic recs! i haven't been reading as much lately but i hope ill be able to find more if anyone else asks in the future. cheers!

On the other hand… Sniff had finally settled down a little, and Grian didn’t have a clue where to find a dummy for his mouth. He almost drowned, you know. And from his point of view, he basically got abducted by aliens. A little thumb-sucking would probably be okay. Joe poked in his head then and, with Grian’s permission by proxy, snipped off a lock of the baby’s hair. It looked pretty pale, the color of pancake batter, though the hair around his ears suggested it might darken with age. Sniff started. Joe gave his head a soft stroke and addressed the baby, not Grian, with his next words: “I’ll ask around the human towns. I might be able to dig up information on your parents. Your dad sounds like a nasty guy, but if I find your other parent, I’ll let you know. Okay?” Sniff sucked his thumb, mute as a snail.

In which Grian and Joel, having saved a newborn sniffer hybrid from drowning, go through the basic motions of "What comes next?" - Like childproofing the floating foster home.

SnifferMyFeet was not an accident, though Joel and Grian swore they’d never tell him that. “We think your parents lost you in a storm; we never found them,” sang sweeter than “Your mother’s out of the picture and we watched your father throw you in a river when you were three weeks old.”

Or maybe Sniff had two fathers. We shouldn’t assume; the hate crime could be diverse. They hadn’t asked for details while struggling to rescue the burlap sack from snot-thick water, but the anti-hybrid slurs the human on shore spluttered out painted a nasty picture as it was. Joel tried to bite him. That probably didn’t help The Hybrid Agenda, but Grian would’ve bit him too if he hadn’t been coughing up sluggish brown water and bits of sand and kelp.

So, you know… SnifferMyFeet joined the party. Xisuma sighed when Grian brought the baby in. Less about the paperwork and more about the general cruelty of the world (One would hope). He pulled his gloves higher on each hand, so you knew red tape was about to hit the table. And it did. Xisuma better aligned his helmet, then dragged a wobbly chair to his too-tall desk.

“Right. So… Were you followed?”

“No,” Grian murmured. “We cut through Joel’s dad’s territory.” Across the creek, around the brambles, and straight through the ambiguous flats that everyone claimed housed a skunk mating ground, but Grian swore stunk like sulfur. Then past Doc’s perimeter and you take a wander through Scarland, which is hands-down a must-see on any escape from a human encounter. Don’t put children down for a sec to look at stuffed Jellie cats. You will either lose them or bury them alive.

“And where is Joel now?”

“Warm shower. Slowly, I hope. He was in that ice water for a while.” And it always clung so heavy in his fur. Once, on a wild stunt Grian would rather forget about, he and Joel spent two weeks together living with the wolf pack where Joel had been born. No father to speak of (I mean, obviously), though Joel always claimed the alpha male treated him like a son.

Anyway, winter blew fiercer winds than either of them expected. Joel slipped on the ice. It cracked beneath his butt and dumped him in the lake. Grian spent a whole weekend bringing back his health while Joel lit TNT in place of campfires and felt real sorry for himself. Well, he was Joel, so it was probably a #No Regrets sort of thing, but… still. You should’ve seen his gray-brown fur soaking wet all down his arms and legs. His tail could’ve been a sewn-on sock and he wouldn’t’ve been the wiser.

“Ah.”

“Ick-‘suma, it’s a hybrid. The dad—The parents—I mean… We didn’t see the mum.”

“You’re bleeding…”

“Oh. Yeah. He shot me. Joel too. Joel a lot.” Red dots stained the red and yellow leaves.

Sniff’s huffs turned to whines. Grian stood, holding the baby to his chest so the legs dangled down, and bounced on his toes. He used to do this with Junior. It sometimes helped. He spun a circle and murmured poems and lyrics and little things. And Joe Hills, sitting backwards on a chair, commented lightly that the humans were getting bolder; Sniff’s debut wasn’t the first time they’d been spotted at the river. The Hermits might have to move again.

“Good,” Grian muttered back, cradling the straining infant to his chest. He’d have to ask around in case anyone had a baby sling. Zedaph sometimes used them to carry mobs around, especially while delivering them by air. Grian shifted his arms to adjust the weight distribution, but the baby didn’t really get that Grian couldn’t suckle, so that was a whole thing. Hm. NPC never pestered him for milk. Ariana and Victor did, though.

Anyway, “I don’t want to live near humans if they can’t sort their issues out. Right… I’m taking a break. This little guy needs me more than anyone. Come get me when the season turns.”

“Are you sure?” Xisuma asked him softly. “I’m just worried about you getting burned out. You’re already raising 6.”

“Right. Who better to take him in than me?”

Through the tint of Xisuma’s helmet visor, Grian caught a flicker of eyelashes slipping shut. One finger tapped his table. Twice. Just twice. He asked Joe to step out for a minute. The eternally ambiguous hybrid bowed with a flourish and vanished through the door like a ghost. Grian felt his feathers puff. Water dribbled through the vanes. But he stayed very still, clutching the baby sniffer hybrid, as Xisuma turned back to him.

“Grian, I’m asking as your pack leader, really for the paperwork, but you don’t have to tell me unless you’re comfortable. Are you seeing anyone right now?”

Empty faces with dark eyes and gaping mouths floated through his vision. Grian’s fingers twitched. “Anyone in the commune, you mean.”

“I didn’t say that.” Gentle. Paper-thin. Grian’s eyes blurred, but he grit his teeth and shifted his weight forward in his chair. His talons snagged against the carpet. Right, and the baby started in his lap. Grian, because he was good at what he did, shushed him with a few soothing pats to the head. Sniff yawned and stretched before curling in his arms.

“I have a mate.” This was unprovable fact to most the Hermits (in the ways that they thought mattered). Just… just… Look. He kept that information private, and that was the the end of this conversation. Xisuma nodded like a panther’s pawsteps, resting two fingers against his nose.

“7 kids is a lot, even for two or three adults.”

Grian’s feathers fluffed up again. “‘ey, listen; I know what you’re getting at. Mumbo and I aren’t dating, but he’s just as committed to Ariana, Grum, and Junior as I am. We’re ‘ride or die.’”

And for the baby’s sake as it fussed against the folds in his soggy jumper, he lowered his voice:

“I’m too much ‘a monster’ to live with humans. I’ll never get to study in their schools or go to conferences or publish my research, right? I do one thing in this world, Ex-ee-zuma: I’m the dad who steps up. I can do this. Parrots form flocks. I’m good at this.”

MCYT College AU, also called What’s Your Major? or WSU AU, is a collaborative AU made by the Traffic Mafia Crew™. Although labeled ‘MCYT,’ the AU has a strong focus on Hermitcraft and Empires SMP, with occasional others scattered in between.

It is set in an urban fantasy/low magic world, filled with humans, hybrids, witches, and more, with a proper magic system and everything (plotholes may be included)! Also featured, is a full world layout with several different realms. From classics like the Overworld, Nether and End, to lesser known lands, such as the Ether, the Deep Dark and the Undersea.

Very fun worldbuilding with the fae university, poor Xisuma trying to keep his Hermits out of trouble despite plenty of shenanigans, soft Scarian, and an unprepared Mumbo stumbling into it all.

Whumptober Day 3

AU: Urban Fantasy

We got a fantasy reveal for this day lads!

Wilbur’s eyes drifted from Tommy to his captor, and Tommy had to stifle a wince as the gun pressed just a bit harder into his temple, his heart feeling like it was going to beat out of his chest.

And for just a moment, it almost looked like Wilbur’s eyes burned.

“Hey, mate.” Tommy’s friend tilted his head, perfectly nonchalant, to lock gazes with Tommy’s captor, dark brown eyes almost honey gold in the light. “Can I ask you a question?”

The man paused, clearly thrown, but recovered, dragging Tommy back a step with him as he straightened his spine threateningly.

“What?” he snapped. “I fucking told you already-”

“What do you see when you look at me?”

And Tommy abruptly remembered something that Wilbur had said.

He’d thought it was a joke then.

“Promise me, Tommy,” Wilbur said, his face cast in the light of the sunset the two of them were watching. Oddly serious, oddly still. “If I ever ask someone- “What do you see when you look at me?” A beat, a moment, before Wilbur spoke again, his voice husky and deep. “You look away, Tommy. Don’t look.”

“Yeah, sure, Big Man,” Tommy scoffed, leaning back with his arms behind his head. “Make sure I don’t see how ugly you are, ay?”

Wilbur noogied him with a laugh, and the somber mood of the moment was broken.

A sharp, unimpressed laugh from Tommy’s captor, and the gun shifted just enough that it slid into Tommy’s vision, making him shudder at the cold metal against his skin. 

“The fuck?” Another scoff. “I see a nosy little shit who doesn’t know when to mind his own fucking business.” His grip tightened. “And you’re about to see your friend here lose his brains. So walk away.”

“Weird.” Wilbur’s voice was perfectly calm and even. “Look again.”

Tommy squeezed his eyes shut. 

Even through his closed lids, face turned away, Tommy could see the imprints of radiant light.

And he could hear the man screaming.

“Tommy. Tommy.”

Warm hands were on his face, and Wilbur was in front of him, on his knees as well. The unearthly, eldritch radiance was gone, leaving just Tommy’s friend as he’d always known him, his eyes filled with concern and something like love. 

“You ok?” Wilbur asked gently. “I’m sorry- I know that was probably a lot, mate.” 

“W-Wha-” Tommy shuddered, leaning forwards just a bit more and Wilbur wrapped his arms around him in turn, scratching through his hair gently. “What w-was that?”

Wilbur just hummed, rocking the two of them back and forth.

“That was me,” he said plainly, as if that wasn’t the craziest thing Tommy had ever heard of. “What I look like on- uh. The fifth plane, I think? Didn’t pay as much attention as I probably should have when Dad was giving me the rundown on it.”

Tommy made a tiny, pathetic noise that he couldn’t even bring himself to be ashamed of, pressing his forehead into Wilbur’s shoulder because everything was just a lot right now, ok.

“What- are you?” he whispered, not even sure if he should dare asking, if this was the end of the line for him as well but he had to know- 

Wilbur hissed out a breath through his teeth, sounding more rueful than anything else.

“That’s… really up for debate, honestly. But the closest you could probably call me is nephilim, if that helps.”

Summary: Technoblade has gotten very good at being able to tell when people are lying. Like when a middle aged soccer mom is complimenting your outfit but she actually thinks it’s the ugliest thing she’s had to lay eyes on. Or when your college roommate promises to stop leaving dirty laundry around when you both know very well that he’s not going to. Or- and this is completely hypothetical- when you ask your little brother and his best friend why the sudden interest in the demon you are casual friends with, their answer is “no reason in particular”.

Ok so maybe the last one wasn’t so hypothetical after all.

Summary:

Grian is a completely normal human, living in a completely normal, human world. Or at least, that's what he thought before the creature attacked him. Now the well-dressed man in front of him is telling him that supernatural beings are real, and that he is one of them. Either there's a whole 'nother side to the world that Grian was completely unaware of, or he's just really, really concussed.

Ok ok I've been working on this AU fic for a while now and I'm so pumped to finally be able to share the first chapter! More characters will be introduced as the fic goes along, though primarily it'll be the Hermits.

I just love this AU so much and have loved world building it up and thinking how the different characters would be in this world and arg I'd love to blab more if anyone wants to hear it!

What Is Half Hidden AU?

No matter how deep into their mob parents' lands the hybrids go, human towns keep encroaching. Every hybrid's got some version of the same ol' story- "Too human" for one side of the family, "too monster" for the other.

Survival in the jungle isn't easy, but at least it's home... or was, for a while. How many more seasons can they relocate, rebuild... avoid the hate and cruelties that hybrids receive? From both sides of their families, sometimes...

Characters

- All the Hermits, but few people outside Hermitcraft SMP. Not sure how many of them will show up in stories since I'm early in the AU, but they're all here in my heart.

- All mobs are anthros

- Grian has several half-siblings and adopted children that parallel his alter egos and supposed children in the canon.

- Grian's married to a parrot mob who lives outside the Hermit commune. He doesn't talk about it much.

Hermitcraft-themed locations, with emphasis on jungles and the coastline. There are some impressive builds, but most of them on a small scale due to limited space.

A focus on survival with some folks pushing for freedom and fun.

- Tense biological family relationships, but kindhearted found family

- Long-term anxiety underscoring people's lives. A sense of never being able to settle or achieve safety

- Non-human humanoids & interspecies relationships

- All mobs are anthros, but there's still meat-eating in this world. It's most common when mobs hunt mobs, but it's not unheard of for humans to hunt mobs and hybrids.

-> I don't plan to depict hybrid meat. Also, culture generally leans towards "good, civilized humans" eating plants they've farmed rather than "hunting and foraging like the animals."

- A general sense of finding sweetness and joy despite the nature of a difficult world

This series debuted in the Hermitcraft Guess the Author event of 2024. It's ongoing with unscheduled updates, but several WIPs already outlined.

This probably won't be a very long series as I'm less familiar with Hermitcraft than the Life Series, but the idea for this one has been sitting with me a while. I'm glad to explore it.

🌄 First Written - "Platypus Bird: Free to Good Home"

In which Grian and Joel, having saved a newborn sniffer hybrid from drowning, go through the basic motions of "What comes next?" - Like childproofing the floating foster home.

The first character and lore story completed for this AU. I've planned pieces both before and after this point in the SnifferMyFeet arc- this is just the one that came out first.

I tried to write it as an easy introduction to the lore without being too long or intense. It's a good place to start.

🗺️ Worldbuilding

- The vibe I started with was "Hermitcraft setting, but full of civilians." I expanded from that to having many towns and cities, some of which are more accepting towards mob and hybrid cultures than others.

- Close Hermitcraft parallels, though I'm only familiar with Seasons 6 to 10, and only from about 6 POVs.

- There's only one world. No servers- Everything exists within one and Hermits move to new areas instead of changing worlds.

- Mobs are both realistic and mystical. Hybrids may have some magic, but not as much as mobs, who have far more mastery of it. Mobs are looked on with some respect or fear.

- Mining, crafting, and inventory management are mystical too.

- Some people eat meat, but society caters well to vegetarian and vegan dishes; no one would bat an eye for requesting such (unless you're somewhere very unique indeed). Mobs and even hybrids may be killed for their meat in some places while others have greater protections.

- Mobs bring down other mobs for meat (Ex: wolves preying on sheep, fox on chickens). Some do attack humans, but these are usually zombies, endermen, phantoms, creepers, and other monsters (not real-world creatures).

-> I don't plan to depict hybrid meat, though some folks may make threatening remarks (Ex: "I bet you taste like chicken"). Also, culture generally leans towards "good, civilized humans" eating plants they've farmed rather than "hunting and foraging like the animals."

- It's common to build fantastic things, with one person capable of building a whole town if they put their mind to it. Resources are widely available, but not always renewable or easy to obtain. The existence of many settlements across the world has led to the largest resource yields being protected.

- Humanoid mobs like villagers, pillagers, and wandering traders are essentially equal with humans. They have their own cultures and language, but can speak with humans.

- Pigs and piglins are perceived as the same thing. I think in this AU, piglins are perceived as boars (male) and pigs as sows (female), and all under the name "piglin."

- Mob/human relationships are often frowned on, though some parts of the world are more accepting. Human/hybrid relationships may be looked at skeptically by those who believe they're too different to work. Hybrid/mob relationships may be seen as beastly.

- All hybrids are infertile.

📋 AU Notes & Warnings

Found Family - Taking in unrelated or semi-related people. Family relationships can be a bit fluid or undefined, though some do have more defined sibling or parent-child vibes.

Grian's raising several people who are his half-siblings, but he sees himself a bit more as a flock leader (or father) than a brother.

Mob hybrid racism (Whole AU is themed around pushback from mobs and humans alike)

-> Views differ even between individuals within the same society, so it's not easy to "simply move to an accepting place."

-> Chromia (Scott's S2 empire from Empires SMP) is often cited as very accepting, even providing medical treatment to hybrids that some places don't offer

-> AU depicts cruelty. Mostly towards hybrids, but towards humans and mobs sometimes as well. 3-week-old SnifferMyFeet got thrown in a river by his dad; that's the direction we're going.

Non-human humanoids - Mobs are human-sized anthros. Hybrids are also human-sized. Mobs are very animalistic, with behaviors and community structures mimicking real-world animals (such as hunting other animals, which means anthros in this AU).

-> Grian was taken from his mom because she only fed him worms and grubs when he was born; his hybrid body needed milk.

-> Hybrids also have many mob instincts, but to a lesser degree.

Interspecies relationships: Human/mob, human/hybrid, and hybrid/mob are all fair game.

Human/mob relationships can result in hybrid offspring

Hybrids are infertile

At the time of posting this AU guide, I'm not planning to write sexual content for this AU, but if I'm inspired, anticipate interspecies relationships in that regard too.

I do anticipate romantic gestures like kissing, and preening, grooming, and cuddling.

It's an urban fantasy- sbi centric au (82k words) and it's just. One of the tags is "Wilbur soot vs the mortifying ordeal of being known" and that just says so much about it. I want to gush about this but I also think everyone should read it ever and don't want to spoil. Like,,,, even if you don't normally read fan fics for mcyt fandom please read this one it's so good. Please read it. Please. It's very good.

And though it was an exciting life, it was a lonely one. So what does he do when he finds another human locked up in an underground bunker? He takes them and runs.
