Two new MCTNA fics!

Author reveals have now happened so I can reveal that I wrote two fics for Yuletide! One, my main exchange fic for @lostemotion, a 10.9k MCTNA SeonHwi fic set during the timeskip in episode 10. Featuring drug use, Seonho's questionable decisionmaking skills and Hwi doing what has to be done.

And a treat for @judiwench: Hwi trying to care for Yeon whilst getting pulled into Situations with nobles and pining over the only noble he wants.

no no no. I don't want to believe that such a painful scene existed. on the other hand, I've always wondered why Seon-ho didn't find out about Hwi after Yeon's death. this is probably right after seeing Yeon's corpse because his hands are still bloody. this scene shows in the preview of ep 10 and only has this dialogue from Hui-jae. I'm glad they removed it (although we missed an masterpiece performance from Dohwan) but I couldn't bear to see more Seon-ho's pain and guilt in that episode. now I hate Hui-jae even more because of the way she looks at Seon-ho and the tone of her speech.

BangSeon Corporate/Chaebol AU

Was looking through the divine google doc of unfinished wips yesterday and came upon my plan for a chaebol au fic. Since I couldn't get the idea out of my head, 5 1/2 hours of poor time management later, this art was born:

Initially, the idea behind the fic was to have Seon-ho secretly form an alliance with Bang-won—one of the top candidates for the CEO Position in Yi Group—to take down Nam Group—Yi Group’s prime competitor—which is headed by none other than Nam Jeon.

Of course, Bang-won isn't trusting of Seon-ho at first (Mainly because when they first met, Seon-ho had broken into his apartment to steal some documents from him. Oh. And he had a knife. So definitely not a good first impression). But he accepts his help in exchange for giving him access to specific documents & not calling up his armed security right away ('cause honestly like hell Bang-won is gonna let his little half-brother take that CEO Position from him). By working together with Seon-ho, he'll make a significant contribution to the company's future. The board will most definitely back him as the next leader.

A few months go by as they work on their plan. The more time they spend together, they realise that each other's presence is equally as infuriating as it is arousing.

At some point, they're both invited to some high society dinner along with their families but they were SO not expecting to see each other there. Bang-won sees Seon-ho out of his usual dark hoodies and sweats for the first time and his brain short-circuits. Though, he is a bit pissed off that Seon-ho didn’t tell him he’d be there. Seon-ho shares the sentiment. They have to pretend they don't know each other as if they haven’t spent the last 3 months working together on their plan.

Bang-won suggests they go chat somewhere more private do they duck into the first empty room they can find. As soon as the door closes, Bang-won cornering Seon-ho against the wall.

Words burst out of his throat before he can stop himself. “What the hell are you doing here?"

Seon-ho pushes forward and into his personal space. “I was invited dumbass.”

“You’ll blow our cover.”

“If I recall, you’re the one who asked to speak to me here."

Bang-won laughs, mirthless and condescending. "Because you were talking to the damn man we've been looking into since we started this thing. Wasn't it obvious how fucking stupid that was of you?"

"Oh I'm the stupid one, now am I?!" Seon-ho juts his chin forward and then there are barely inches between their faces. "God you’re so infuriating sometimes I just want to-”

“to what?”

Cue both internal monologues of their Anthony Bridgerton feels aka bane of my existence talk.

And then their lips are smashing together in a kiss. Heated make out session, hand fisting in shirt, teeth clacking. Both trying to devour the other basically.

1 gratuitous minute later, there's a knock at the door making them spring apart.

none of us are going back is the MCTNA zombie au that i have put very small amounts of progress into!!! I think I've figured out the basic plot now (which is good cause i was kind of just going off of vibes before), but that's about all I've got. I will, however, give you a snippet bc I love seonhwi with all my heart

One day, Hwi wakes up from a dream he doesn’t remember having, the sound of the wind breaking through the slats in the boarded-up windows in a thin, rasping wheeze.  Except for there is no wind. And no boards on the windows. And the sound is coming from below Hwi instead of somewhere beyond him.  He looks down and nearly shouts, because Seon-ho is under him and Hwi’s fingers are wrapped around his throat and Seon-ho’s face is turning purple as he struggles to pull in air.  Hwi manages to unclench his fingers, though it takes a moment, and it’s much harder than it should probably be. He slumps off of Seon-ho, who rolls to the side and coughs gratingly. Hwi lies on his back and stares at his hands, his trembling fingers. He looks over to the side and sees the rifle and Seon-ho’s knife nowhere near, still sheathed and uncocked. Like Seon-ho had never even thought of using them to defend himself.

(And as for gay Lazarus!! this is a project I started in my 2022 Artist-in-Residence program; after I performed it the first time I've taken a break, but I really want to go back to developing it a little more and hopefully turning it into a full album, but I've got a lot of work to do to get there lmao)

the candles burned out the light since this song, and this line in particular, gave me so many ideas, both writing- and giffing-wise. also the latest chapter of Half of Your Fate (“two rings, one heart”) since i like the meaning behind it: there may be two rings, one for hwi, the other for seon-ho to keep, but their hearts are one.

what relationship are you excited to explore next year? 

1. bangseon bangseon bangseon - there are so many stories i want to tell about them that i haven’t told yet

2. seonrok as i’ve been promising for so long. i’m determined to be braver about tackling their relationship and writing them!!

what do you listen to while writing

i listen to a lot of florence and the machine and paris paloma, for seonhwi i listen to a lot of joji, the weeknd is also a favorite, otherwise cigarettes after sex, the instrumental ost for the crowned clown is great for Half of Your Fate (esp. Snow Field is so seon-ho-core that it hurts my heart), and i know i’ve recced these two seon-ho playlists before.

fav line written this year, whether it's published or not 

1. if it’s a line, my mind always goes back to this one again from time to time; it's from the goblin king:

Cold unfolds inside her like a long winter night.

it was partially inspired by this translation of a beautiful sijo poem by hwang jini (1506-1567) who was a famous kisaeng (although this translation on wikipedia may express the double entendre better):

I will break the back of this long, midwinter night, Folding it double, fold beneath my spring quilt, That I may draw out the night, should my love return.

2. otherwise it’s the last 2-3 lines here, from the as of yet unfinished sequel of and bloodless again:

Seon-ho holds him, rocking him like he’s a child. He strokes his hair and his back, hums in his low, soothing voice. Lullaby-soft. The way Bang-won might do with his own daughters and sons. Seon-ho doesn’t have his own children. He doesn’t have a wife, doesn’t have a brother or a sister, nor a mother. Not anymore. His father might as well not be one. He has no family to speak of, in truth. So where did he learn such tenderness? Such love? Or—perhaps he did have children, once. Two of them, things spat out on the roadside, rotting and dying. A tragedy, certainly, but nothing special. Only more casualties of Goryeo. Of Bang-won. No one else would have given them a second glance. No one except Seon-ho. He didn’t walk past or look the other way, in that cutting way he has, seeing to the core of everything. He cannot make himself look away like other people do. It’s not in his nature. Maybe his life would be easier, if it was. It’s what makes him so terrifying. He picked them up from the ground and fed them from his bosom. He held them, long ago, before father, king, and country. Before they were ripped out of his arms, the way he was stolen from his mother’s. Bang-won wonders what it would be like to hold him, instead of just being held by him. To hold his heart in his mouth like a quail egg, small and fragile, and crack it between his teeth. To crack him in two: pieces of soft eggshell and blue.

biggest surprise while writing this year?

didn’t expect to be writing for bloodhounds!! gun-woo and myeonggun really took me by storm. also didn’t expect park sung-woong and knife daddy myeong-gil to completely take over my brain haha.

aside from that, i’ve become more confident about posting fics, even if i think they might not be good enough for posting or the fandom isn’t big enough for anyone to care. i’m proud of myself for going off anon on my darkfics. i think i’ve also become better at recognizing when i’m writing for others, instead of myself. the audience i should always be writing for first and foremost is myself, and sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of that. having learned all these things, hopefully i’ll be able to grow as a writer and become better at just having pure, mindless fun in the future!!

i just sifted through my notes app and there are so many fun fic ideas... i'm dying. why aren't i writing these???

1. the follow-up to the yu ziyuan/jin-furen fic where now they're married to their husbands but fed up and want to run away together. only yu ziyuan is pregnant again, and jin-furen can't trust her husband to keep jin zixuan safe. it's more about yu ziyuan coming to accept yunmeng as her home and figuring out what boundaries she needs to set to survive it (i.e. not answering to jiang-furen), and also her complicated fear(?) of motherhood, especially when it comes to jiang cheng. but jin-furen is still her most important person, so it'd still be a little shippy.

2. hwi taking seon-ho to swim for the first time and navigating the emotional minefield that entails. and seon-ho being absolutely giddy about them both surviving until he gets home and it's clear nam jeon knows where he's been. nam jeon does kind of get under his skin, but seon-ho has a reminder in his pocket (hwi's hair tie that he took without asking), which he holds onto as a reminder that hwi didn't die, hwi won't die, not because of him. (he will take this talisman out from its hiding place every time he needs it until after the military exam because by then he can't believe in it anymore)

3. wei wuxian trying to prepare for his wedding alone and struggling, but jiang cheng shows up to help him set up and comb his hair, even though he wasn't invited to the wedding, and even though it should be yanli. because wei wuxian needs him, and, for once, he can do something. they only barely relax into each other's presence before jiang cheng finishes, but it's important because wei wuxian gets concrete proof that he doesn't have to lose a family to gain a family (despite what previous experiences have suggested), and jiang cheng gets to tell wei wuxian that he approves of the marriage, if only because "it's easier to lose you like this" (thinking of the other ways jiang cheng has lost wei wuxian) - and it isn't perfect, but they're both still here, and it's a rare chance they get to stop and appreciate it together.

4. bai chuan and fang xu's relationship from childhood to adulthood, and all the ways they misunderstand and resent each other (affectionately, usually). at one point fang xu breaks his arm and has to whisper his moves into bai chuan's ear to set the pieces, and bai chuan gets increasingly mad because he realizes that fang xu holds back when they play each other. at one point they fight because fang xu says sometimes he hates weiqi, and bai chuan takes it personally and tells him to just quit then, but fang xu says can't because he *is* weiqi and if he quits he'll die. and bai chuan is so frustrated with his own inadequacies he doesn't really understand what is fang xu is trying to tell him until they're much older and living separate lives. anyway, obviously a happy ending on this one. i just like to think about them sharing a bed, and bai chuan being the one to tell fang xu he needs glasses (which of course fang xu ignores because how can he need glasses when he's "perfect").

5. a short yanli-centric fic where she finds her mother drunk and depressed after jin-furen's annual visit to yunmeng has ended. yu ziyuan is the only one to notice that yanli is sad that jin zixuan is gone, too, and makes a comment about how yanli is cursed just like her. yanli has always wondered what it would be like to finally be *seen* by yu ziyuan, and even to be compared to her formidable mother (just once), but now that it's happened, she doesn't like it, and she doesn't agree with it either, and, like, that's a lot to process, but she'll come out a stronger and better person for it.

The way Bang-won talks to his mother is too beautiful and full of emotions. in those moments we can see he still has heart.

And that reminds me of Seon-ho too. I wonder if Seon-ho also had moments like this with his mother?not showing his feelings for his mother and then showing his anger about it only shows his pain more. my stupid Seon-ho always blamed himself for everything.
