Guys, my fic for the @mcspirkevents Big Bang is just about ready to go and I can’t WAIT for you guys to get to read it. It’s almost 22k, a silly little romcom with old married mcspirk. I hated it for a lot of the writing process but rereading it today I’m actually pretty pleased with how it all turned out!

Mine goes up on Friday, but I think there’s at least one that goes up before mine, and lots to come after! If you’re a McSpirk fan make sure you’re following @mcspirkevents to keep up with all of them—it’s going to be a feast of McSpirk!

my fic for the Mcspirk Big Bang is finally here! This thing ended up being around 60k words long and I cannot believe I got it done! AOS, Academy Era, Meet Cute and Meet Ugly - it's got all the shenanigans you'd expect from these three dorks. PLUS Spock keeps pigeons. Need I say more?

I was absolutely blessed to have my buddy Nic @pityroadart /@existentialcrisistime as my artist, and he created some absolutely stunning paintings for this fic (such as this post's beautiful header). His skill is absolutely unmatched and I am just so lucky to have been paired with him.

SUMMARY

Summer just started, and Jim is bored out of his mind. The courses he needs to take aren’t being offered until the second half of the summer, so he has an entire month to bother his roommate Bones. At Bones’ suggestion to get a job, Jim fixes up a motorbike and starts making deliveries to people in town, including a cute Vulcan professor named Spock. But when Jim is beaten up while making a delivery, it’s Spock who delivers Jim back to the apartment he shares with Bones. After the meet-cute from hell, Spock and Bones start dating… and so do Jim and Spock. With neither roommate aware they’re both dating the same man, there’s only so long that things can go well for them before the other shoe finally drops.

Thanks a ton to @mcspirkevents for running this event and @affixjoy and @ncc1701ohno for betaing this behemoth. This is the longest thing I've written for Star Trek, and there's no way I would have caught everything on my own. Shout out also to all the cool people in the Mcspirk Events discord server, love you guys!

what fandoms do you write in? star trek. only star trek. and although i've done the fandom switching thing a few times, this is now my forever home

how many words have you published in 2024? so, here's the thing. i almost didn't do this post at all because 2024 was a shit year for writing for me. i published a total of 7k words. that's it. but here's the other thing. i decided to actually respond to this cause not every year is great when it comes to writing. i've been writing long enough to know that some years are absolute zeros, and some are skyhigh, writing is tough no matter what, and real life one hundred percent has an effect on how productive a writer can be.

i dealt with a life or death scenario with my longtime partner in 2024, and a major illness of my own (that has me on month four of a medical leave from work). put in that context, 7k seems pretty fucking great, and I'm proud of it.

what is your greatest achievement this year? not giving up (as ray bradbury said, "you fail only if you stop writing.")

what are your top three fics you've written this year? ask me again next year lol

what was your biggest pit of despair moment? the months i sat in front of my computer with a scrivener doc open cause i wanted to write desperately and no words came to me, none.

what have you learned? that i need to refill the well. whether it's books, movies, tv, going to an art museum, wandering through the forest, reaching out to friends, staring at a wall, etc... i can't write from an empty well.

what three fics have you read this year that you love? i really really really need to do another rec list cause there are way more than three that i've loved this year. standouts (for being fics that i found creative af) were desk jobs by werewolvesarereal, space age country girl, stone cold miracle by thembonesthembones, and the appointed place by campyspaceslime

what ideas are percolating for next year? i'm currently posting my first aos mcspirk fic, then i'm going to finish slight injuries, drastic measures. and after that? who knows. i'll see where inspiration takes me

🤔- What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?

Here's a few:

Mcspirk loses their memories, and yet still want to protect each other from danger. They have no idea why.

McCoy returning to his room late, and finding a sleeping Jim, and Spock there. He goes about the room, tidying/preparing for the morning before joining them to rest.

Scotty assumed Mcspirk have been together for years, so when he apologizes for interrupting what he thinks is an anniversary celebration, he's shocked to find out that they are not in fact, together. Nor have they ever been.

A fic where one by one my favorite Enterprise ships get together. First Chulu, then Mcspirk, and lastly Uhotty (because let's be honest Scotty would just assume Uhura's flirting is nothing).

A multi-chap fic that highlights Chekov's relationship with each of the triumvirate, as he grows into a starfleet officer (and maybe him reacting to each of their deaths).

A series of vignettes that highlight McCoy's relationship with his daughter Joanna.

Plus many many others. I usually post my random ideas in the Mcspirk Events Discord, where server law often leads to me writing them out.

I just started watching Star Trek tos when I got sick last week and ship mcspirk so hard, sad I missed voting in the poll by one day but!! I'm so glad to find out there's still Star Trek mcspirk shippers out there. I thought I was too late.

There are lots of Mspirk shippers out there! Honestly when I first started watching Star Trek, I began with Wrath of Khan and the Mcspirk bit me so bad. I was sad to see there weren't many active events going on for them. I mean you had the @sttermsofservice zine (go check it out), but that was for any combination of the three characters and not just Mcspirk alone.

When I hosted the week and I saw other people actually really love this ship I knew I'd have to host more events. My hope is that people continue to enjoy the characters, the ship, and have fun with these events!

I was one of the artists paired with @very-bad-poetry-captain for her amazing fic, Courtship Rituals.

Spock eyed the flickers of bonfire light washing over his face, a sensation like understanding settling inside him. Soft lips, hazel eyes, a questioning look in them as they glanced his way. The question turned into something else as Jim’s gaze lingered. The taste of their kiss touched Spock’s lips like a solid memory, a phantom feeling that seemed mirrored in Jim’s expression

I want to know about your favorite thing you made in 2024. Art, writing, blog post, meme, whatever. Whatever makes your heart swell and you say to yourself yes I did that (positive) I want to hear about it.

I’ll go first:

What is the thing?

I’ve set myself up with an impossible question. The thing I’m most proud of is that I wrote SO DAMN MUCH this year. I think, including original stuff, I’ve passed 200k, which feels like a huge accomplishment.

Picking one thing though, I think I have to go with The Sum of All Our Accomplishments that @spongynova illustrated. (Star Trek TOS, rated E, Spock/Kirk with some friends with benefits McCoy on the side)

What inspired the thing?

This fic was part of the Shore Leave Th’y’la Reverse Bang, so the main inspiration was Spongy’s art! Once we were paired I spent a day driving around thinking about the art and what I wanted to do with it, and I caught on the idea of the way memories seem to layer and come forward when you go to the same place over and over again. During that brainstorming time I went to the beach for a few days in the town I’ve been going on vacation at since I was born, and the way memories wrap around you in a place like that is beautiful and intense and sometimes a little bittersweet. I feel like I did a pretty good job of capturing that feeling!

In a less tangible way, the boomdeahda song was also a big inspiration.

What was your process for making the thing?

Interestingly, I struggled A LOT writing this. I kept feeling like I couldn’t get it where I wanted it to be, and it felt like wrestling a bear for most of the writing process. I think I complained a lot on the McSpirk server.

This was the first year I ever tried to participate in fandom events, and I have mixed feelings about how that went. I’ve loved meeting people and collaborating with artists like Spongy! Some of my best work came from events and me forcing myself to finish things for them! But also, it took away time from things I really wanted to write especially original stuff. Next year my goal is to have a better balance.

What part of it are you most proud of?

I really love how I wrote Bones as their friend with benefits here. I love all flavors of the three of them together, but this is closest to what I see as my favorite. He loves them, they love him, but it isn’t a soulmate/romantic love in the same way Spirk is. He’s got his own stuff going on outside of them. I love how I wrote their first time together here, and I’m really proud of it!

Anything else?

This part isn’t me bragging so much as fawning over Spongy’s art again. Like WOW go look at it! Even if you don’t want to read the fic the art is just so vibrant and beautiful.

14. Honestly... all of them. I didn't expect to get into a fandom to the point that I was writing fic again. But then McSpirk and Star Trek consumed my life, and I'm so glad they did.

A more specific answer would probably be Receiver Error. The idea came from the McSpirk Events discord server, and it's not something I ever would have come up with on my own. It was SO fun to write, though. Here's a link for anyone that hasn't read it:

19. I've got... ideas. I have a concept I want to write (and you actually helped me come up with) but I don't like the original setting I was going to put it in. So I'm playing around with it until I settle on something I like.

I'm definitely doing events and zines next year! I've got big plans for that.

I'm also working on a short TOS McKirk fic I was hoping to have posted by the end of the year, but I have an hour to go so I don't think that's happening. So... expect that next year too 💖
