Excited to post the piece I illustrated for @mcrswarmzine inspired by MCR's reunion tour show in Albany, NY on August 30th, 2022!

This show was my first time seeing the band since their last show at Bamboozle 2012 and it was truly one of the best nights of my life. <3

I'm so grateful to have been a small part of this project. So much love and effort went into the making of this zine and it shows. It is so meticulously crafted and considered and has so many beautiful artwork, writing, and interviews.

Digital copies are still available at their website and all proceeds will go to the charity Black and Pink.

I stumbled across a blog that's still active but hasn't posted about mcr since the break up and just went through their tag and it was an interesting anthropological experience. Some of the most recent posts were frustrated liveblogging of the 2012 bamboozle stream and they were literally indistinguishable from any liveblog since the return. A lot has changed in the fan base but a lot hasn't!

No joke, I usually can’t do audiobooks but have been trying to find ones I like. And my public library doesn’t have the 3rd or 5th books in physical format. Reading the series now as I was in a reading slump & had never read them as a kid so figured why not? And it’s quickly become one of my favorite series. Even fixed up my cd walkman, granted she’s seen better days but still works!

Granted I do miss the maps & the drawings found in the margins every few pages when it comes to the audiobooks. Especially when it’s one of the dragon foes. Cause they do add a lot of charm & whimsy to the series. Like I see why it’s such a beloved franchise.

Q- Name one band/solo artist that you think is VERY underrated

i feel like the ones i think are underrated are kind of mainstream or talked about a lot, like verified artists on spotify or whatnot, so i don't think any of my favs can count as underrated.

buuut im going to say girl in red (even though they're talked about all the time) i think girl in red is kind of written of as like 'hahah lezzbiennss,' and yeah there's a lot of wlw kind of themed (??) songs, but there's also some that are really introspective and stuff (like serotonin)

so not underrated, but kind of... pideonholed wrong? maybe? like how mcr is like 'haha emos' but anyone that's into mcr will tell you. no. not hahah emos haha black parade.

taylor swift.

i just... don't see the appeal? like she has a handful of really really really good songs, idk, seven, invisible string, cruel summer maybe, and i do think midnights is a good album. but like. it's good. her music has never made me like feel. deeply feel. i don't see why she had such a cultural impact, like her music is so middle tier to me.

ps. i saw a girl in my legal studies class playing taylor swift 2048 the other day sooo that is what i mean by overrated. i think her music is playable, but i like her in the way that i'll put one song on one playlist and call it a day.

pps. no hate at all to people who love taylor swift, she's their favourite ever, etc etc. this is not a criticism of people liking 'basic' things or whatever, whenever i see people specifically hating on taylor swift fans i get so fed up, just let people like what they fucking like. i personally just don't get what's so special about her music. there's a reason i put her in here and not in 'please stop making music'

this is such a weird read because of how normal it is. Like, nothing individually is too unbelievable. People can have plenty of different responses to trauma, so of course something like that would lead someone to pursue a more fulfilling artistic career rather than just animating for a giant corporate machine that couldn't care less about them. And they got popular, that's fine, people and bands get popular, and I'm guessing Dan & Phil have some kind of leading roles in MCR or one of the other emo trinity bands, so of course, especially w/ a large fandom, some fans are going to focus on the lead members. Sure, Phan seems like kind of a random ship, but I don't have any context, so IDK how much sense this makes, and w/ how common the "by Allah, you people are dogs" meme is on this site it doesn't really matter how much sense it makes. And obviously the most popular bands of a genre are going to have crossover, people tend to like genres, not just specific bands. And sure, the imagine seems a bit cringe and random, but the emo trinity is popular, and IDK much abt interned history but I think it was especially popular around this time, so of course someone's gonna make an imagine involving all of them, and of course it's a little cringe, most people aren't good writers. Probably the most unlikely part of this(aside from 9/11 itself, but that's the first domino, so I'm counting that as an axiom of sorts) is heritage posts reblogging it, but it's not particularly unlikely to be reblogged by them, it's old, it's silly, it's about a fandom that was very popular at the time but had lost some of its popularity since, it's not too unlikely. And it's a popular Tumblr user, so of course it became a meme and spread outside Tumblr. Sure Dan and Phil returned to gaming(which they apparently had been doing both alone and together before), I see no reason why that shouldn't happen, especially if they're in a relationship. And sure they're gay, sure statistically most people aren't gay, but that also partially explains the ship, since there is now genuine chemistry, so it may have been there in the past as well. And also, when gay people are hated and scared into keeping their sexuality a secret(often from themselves), statistics will say less people are gay, and when one person comes out as gay, that can easily make others near them more comfortable to come out as gay. And then the rest seems like it could believably be a coordinated effort or FoB and MCR planned a coincidental evend and Dan and Phil took advantage of the situation.

Then you zoom out, and 9/11 caused two celebrities to almost kiss in front of the gay flag. What the fuck. I've been bamboozled with the truth(or possibly lies that don't have a large enough effect on my worldview or actions for me to bother fact checking).

Crazy to think that I almost saw blink perform at bamboozle in 2012. Instead MCR played their last show at the time as a replacement for blink. Now it’s 2023 and I saw both MCR’s reunion show in Newark, NJ (my third MCR concert) and blink-182 in a span of months. I’m so grateful.
