I don't have a big following and I don't expect this to go crazy viral but wanted to get this out there. I'm in western North carolina we are more than 300 miles from the coast above 2000 ft in elevation. Hurricanes don't devestate the mountains like this, The mountains usually get some rain maybe a small bit of flooding, maybe lose power for a day 2 at most. This is unprecedented. Not to mention we had a front go through that dropped between 8-15 inches of rain before Helene even got to us. Places were already flooding and then helene dropped another 8- 15 inches of rain. My local lake rose 14 feet that's 10 foot over max capacity. Evacuation orders came at 3 and 530am morning of, to late to be of use. When we say whole towns have been washed away we aren't exaggerating at all. Whole towns are just gone. So many people are without power, internet and cell reception we still don't know anything really. There are so many missing and dead and no one can give an accurate total because we still don't know the extent of the damage. The news says 166 dead but just 1 city still has over 600 missing. As people get cell service and internet the totals will rise rapidly. You can see bodies washing down the river *multiple rivers*, through parking lots and in tops of trees. They aren't reporting it. They've brought in mobile morgue and are filling them up and not trying to identify bodies at this time. Whole towns are completely gone and many others are completely cut-off due to landslides. Bridges, roads, and driveways are either washed away or damaged so badly they cannot be used. In some places the land where the road was is gone and cannot be rebuilt. Some are covered in trees and mud and just everything to the point it's going to take weeks to clear the road enough for a car to pass through. Driveways and roads are gone and people are stranded with no way to get help, no way to get to the supply drop offs. 911 was down for days. Private citizens and fema are trying to bring in helicopters to help but there is no where for them to land in the mountains. The terrain is just too difficult and unstable. Elevation changes too quickly and nowhere to land for emergency landings. I personally know people who have been told they likely won't get running water again for at least a year. The infrastructure is gone, the reservoir that supplies the area is gone, the pipes that carried water throughout the area have been washed down the mountain and are so damaged it can't be used even if it was recovered. The electric companies can't get out to fix the power because of impassable roads. So many lines and poles are down with trees covering the lines and roads. People are being told they won't get power back on until the end of October, beginning of November. Water treatment facilities are completely underwater and shut down so there is no water either and when it does come back it'll be unusable. Stores are either out of everything or about to be. Looting has started. People are out of medical supplies and can't keep their prescriptions cold even if they had them. People on life saving equipment and oxygen are just watching their batteries run out hopelessly. Fema and military are telling people who come to help to not come and to leave. We still need the help especially in our mountain communities. WE STILL NEED HELP.

Photos and words taken from various Facebook posts:
Appalachia was never prepared for this.
I’m sharing in hopes to raise more awareness and also to encourage any type of support that can be provided to Appalachians.
Entire towns have essentially just been washed away. So many people have lost everything they had, some even losing loved ones.
Below are some organizations I have been seeing locals share to help with the recovery efforts:
-RISE Erwin https://gofund.me/bad8e5ab
-American Red Cross https://www.redcross.org/donate/dr/hurricane-helene.html
-Unicoi County Animal Shelter https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=QRXK7CAJK2GCE
-Report Missing Persons 1-800-824-3463
-United Way of East TN Highlands https://unitedwayetnh.org/help/

There is a lot more to the NC Mountains than Asheville.
Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Vilas, Sugar Grove, Elk Park, West Jefferson, Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Sylva, Cullowhee, Brevard, Bryson City, Hendersonville, Cherokee, Waynesville, Burnsville, Candler, Canton, Spruce Pine, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, Linville, Marshall, Maggie Valley, Newland, Grandfather, Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, Old Fort, Morganton, Marion are just a few of the cities and towns that have been flooded and/or destroyed. The counties of Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, Ashe, Watauga, Transylvania, Burke, Caldwell, Alleghany, Madison, Buncombe, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk, Henderson, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Clay, Cherokee, and Swain are devastated and in need of the same help, some even more.
Other counties that fall under various definitions of Western North Carolina include: Alexander County, Catawba County, Cleveland County, Surry County and Yadkin County. When these counties are added, they form a total regional area of roughly 11,750 square miles (30,400 km2). This makes the region roughly the size of Massachusetts. Western North Carolina holds 11% of the state's population.
There are millions of people up there with no electricity, no communication, no water, and no way to get out or let rescue teams even know where they are. I am not taking anything away from Asheville and the utter destruction there or any other areas in NC that have damage. The level of destruction is unimaginable. But it's not one or two cities or towns that are in need of help.
This does not include the destroyed areas in the Tennessee mountains, Western Virginia, Georgia, or South Carolina.

How to help western NC
Hurricane Helene wrought an astounding amount of damage from Florida to Tennessee, but especially in western North Carolina. (If you want to know why, this is a good explainer: https://slate.com/technology/2024/10/hurricane-helene-destruction-north-carolina-florida-georgia-climate-change.html)
If you'd like to help, Blue Ridge Public Radio has an extensive list of local organizations working in the area: https://www.bpr.org/bpr-news/2024-09-28/list-ways-to-donate-and-help-flood-victims-in-western-north-carolina-after-hurricane-helene
I'm cutting and pasting a few options here, but see the link for the full list.
Hope Mill, Inc - Helicopters Dropping Relief
Pilots are landing in areas of the mountains where road access is still cut off and/or where emergency crews have not yet reached with food and water.
The funds are being used to purchase water and critical supplies by a business based in the Charlotte region. Helicopters are primarily staging and departing out of Hickory, N.C.
BPR has confirmed the GoFundMe listed below is being managed by those directly involved in relief (the effort is also linked to the relief effort supported by Cletus McFarland, a helicopter pilot and YouTuber.).
A group of independent pilots with helicopters have been dropping off donated water, food, and supplies throughout the region for several days. GoFundMe: Support Hope Mill Inc's Hurricane Relief
Hearts With Hands (Swannanoa/Asheville)
A local-based organization that has been supplying food and essentials to Buncombe County shelters.
The group asks that you do not deliver supplies unannounced to their Swannanoa warehouse (they had to evacuate and are restoring services).
The request is for financial donations online. https://www.heartswithhands.org/
Manna FoodBank in Asheville
The organization’s warehouse was prepped prior to the storm.
There are many ways to get involved, volunteer, and donate - including online. Go here to give money to the Manna FoodBank online.
Foothills Food Hub
Working to source water and shelf-stable goods to distribute in McDowell County.
Requesting monetary donations, which can be made online here.
Community Housing Coalition of Madison County
The group will be helping fund emergency home repairs for Helene victims in Madison County.
The request is for online donations. Go here for more information or to donate.

Libelle Arms LDS-BF60-100X "Sawgrass" Prototype Rail Pistol
While the LDS-BF60-100X was not practical as a firearm for any conventional purpose, it is widely regarded as an important early step in man-portable railgun technology.
It was created as a "skunkworks" project by Libelle Arms in 2104, used Electron Projection technology as a jumping-off point, and eventually received funding for a limited production run.
Production nicknames were (and still are) a Libelle tradition. For this pistol, options included "Drop-top", and "Jacala", and eventually settled on "Sawgrass", because of a supposed resemblance to a Florida alligator, especially when open.
As a prototype run, the Sawgrass had several weaknesses. The "Dial-A-Yield" knob on the rear was known to "drift", the battery could eke out a few shots at best, and the hinge of the upper rail was a major structural weakpoint. Libelle corrected the latter in later revisions - starting with the Mk 2 "Jacala" - by removing the hinge entirely.
This turned the weapon platform from "break-action" to "muzzle-loading", an advancement which represented, ironically, a "regression" in weapons technology, and reduced the resemblance to its amphibian namesake.
Fabbed aftermarket parts - and Libelle's occasional anniversary rereleases - have given the "Sawgrass" something of a second life, especially among collectors, enthusiasts, urban musicians, and, of course, developing nation warlords.
Especially after certain high-proile action-movie appearances.
The Mk 01 depicted (owned by a private collector) is serial number #018.

If you've seen my "Jolt" piece, you may have noticed a similar trigger, charge indicator, and lore. Because I drew that while I was drawing this. Can't be sure of the exact date I started, but Krita says I've spent over 14 hours on it, and the year stamp originally said 2022.
That's right. I spent over a year and a half, minimum, on a joke idea.
Funny thing is, I didn't even realized I had repeated elements until I happened to look at "Jolt" toward the end of "Sawgrass".
Also, this is one of the few times I've gotten an Out of Memory error while working on a piece.

Summer in Appalachia is magical. The land simply comes to life. Summer makes me think of barefeet, slamming screendoors, katydids, lightning bugs, warm tomatoes, canning jars, swimming holes, sweet iced tea, sunning, watermelons, blackberries, flip flops, cotton night gowns, warm dirt, baseball, sun kissed faces, corn on the cob, fried squash, fresh cucumbers, guitar picking on the porch, clotheslines, campfires, and honey bees.
Sweet Summertime Memories.

Praying for my hometown rn.
Hurricane Helene ripped through western NC like a bat outta hell and there was no stopping her. I heard from my partner, brother, and dad and they're all okay thankfully but not everyone is. Floodwaters still haven't fully receded yet, power is still out for tens of thousands, no or extremely spotty cell coverage for several counties. Hell, there was an entire region wide communications blackout for nearly two days.
I know theres been several downed trees and land/mudslides as well. Portions of I-40 have landslide advisories from Mcdowell county all the way to Knoxville, TN. It's BAD yall. Last i heard from my dad, FEMA has arrived on scene and the extra manpower is helpful, of course. But please. Keep Appalachia in your thoughts/prayers. There's no doubt in my mind there will be a death toll once the waters recede and more of the region becomes accessible for the first time since the initial hit. I'm extremely blessed that my loved ones all lived not near rivers, or on high hills so even when the water rose is didn't rise THAT far. But really. Stay strong everyone. We're gonna get through this. If you haven't heard from your Asheville/surrounding area loved ones yet hopefully you will soon. Stay strong guys.
