I found some old 911 and buddie posts I had saved in my queue, so I'll reblog them now because yes, I'm not in the fandom anymore since a while, but these gifsets are really amazing, and I wish those same quotes/lyrics could be used for some great Mcdanno gifsets too...I know a lot of gifmakers aren't active anymore, but I'll try to make a single post with all those quotes, and if you remember about someone still actively giffing Mcdanno whom I'm not remembering right now (I should be paying attention to the webinar...), feel free to tag/reblog/spam around.

Finally found it. There it is, the poem which, in my heart, I will always consider as being written for Steve and Danny.

New Show Rec!!!!

If you enjoy watching two men with black cat/golden retriever energy(and not in the order you'd assuume) behave like a bickering, old married couple while simultaneously calling each other 'babe', telling each other they love them all the time, and kicking ass, I've got a show for you. Seriously, you don't even need subtext with these two, they're just blatantly in love with each other and everyone and their mother knows it.

I've fallen down a new rabbit hole. I was looking for a new show to watch and decided to give Hawaii Five-0 a shot finally because I've seen some overlapping appreciation in the Buddie, Destiel, and One Chicago Fandoms. And damn, this did not disappoint. How are more people not completely insane over McDanno??????

Personally, I didn't watch before now because even though I enjoyed MacGyver for a while, I didn't want another overdramatic procedural show filled with outlandish action scenes and bad CGI done by CBS. Cop shows are a dime a dozen now, and nothing about it really stuck out to me. But man, I was wrong.

I was thoroughly impressed by the first season. Between the chemistry between Steve and Danny, the amazing fight scenes that are better than most blockbusters, and their focus on character stories, I was hooked faster than ever.

And while the writing went down hill towards the end just like with most shows(I guess there was a lot going on bts and people were unhappy, I don't know much) and we didn't get the ending we wanted, it's still worth the watch. Besides, this is the perfect recipe for more and better fanfiction to be written in my opinion, when viewers are left unsatisfied.

Anyway, I know the shows a few years old now and the fandom's probably pretty quiet, I'd like to recommend this to any of the Buddie, Destiel, Sevasey, Sterek, etc shippers. There's probably other fandoms and ships similar to these that would enjoy McDanno too, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Basically, two guys working together with 'old married couple' energy and an unprecedented number non-platonic interactions. These two are the worst I've ever seen in the best way.

So if I can share this with even just one person, I'll be happy, because this is so amazing to watch after living off of scraps on shows like 911 and Supernatural.

H50 Meta - Why Het Explanations Don't Work in the Absence of Women

OR, is it any wonder the H50 fandom rallied around McDanno when canonically, the more important a female relationship was to a main character, the less screen-time the female received.

OR, H50's inverse relation between the supposed 'romantic importance' of female characters and their screen-time.

I feel like I could write a whole series of essays on this, and it's linked not just to why fandom persists in 'shipping' McDanno, but also to the way the show doesn't represent women properly. Which isn't just a fault of H50, by the way, but I'm focusing on H50 because it's what I'm currently watching and there are some really clear examples.

Full Disclaimer: I am a McDanno shipper, so may carry some bias into this, however, I am also female and critical of the way women are presented, or rather not-presented, in television. I'm also one of those people who will happily ship a couple while also enjoying whatever ship is presented on-screen. In other words, while I love McDanno, if H50 could present me with a believable het ship for either of them, I would enjoy it. Finally, I have not yet finished H50, having just started s9, so this is written from that perspective.

Screen-time equals importance, so where's the female screen-time?

We all know that, the more important a character or scene is, the more time it is given on screen. That's why the main characters are on our screens far more than the side characters or extras.

One of the narrative ways television tells us something is important is by dedicating screen time to it.

If the camera zooms in a piece of paper wedged behind a bookshelf - you know it's going to be an important clue later. Because screen-time = importance.

However, on H50, I have seen it repeatedly shown that, the more 'important' a female character becomes to a main male character, the *less* screen-time they get.

So it is any wonder the audience is left questioning their actual importance or relevance?

Steve and Catherine

As one of the first het relationships presented to the audience in a positive light, I'll start with Steve and Catherine.

S1 Catherine is always there to fill a plot-hole and give Steve the intel he needs. They're shown as a rather relaxed 'couple', or 'friends with benefits'/'friends with favours'.

We continue on, and Cath becomes more of a main character, even joining five-0 in s4. For a while, at least, it appears that they're increasing her importance to Steve, and increasing her screen-time.

But then, in s5, suddenly - no Catherine. She's off elsewhere. It's like, somehow, she became so important they had to remove her completely.

Of course, she returns at the end of s5, and beginning of s6, just long enough for them to tell us Steve loves her so much he wants to propose.

Only - what happens when Steve considers proposing? Catherine leaves. And lies to him.

It's kinda hard to believe this is the het relationship they're selling, when she's not even on screen as much as she was in s1.

And there are any number of reasons for why they did it this way, but it starts a pattern that is seen throughout H50, of the increasing importance placed on a het relationship equaling decreased screentime for the female half of that relationship.

Danny and Rachel

The other main het relationship presented from the beginning, of course, is Danny and Rachel. Now, they start out divorced, but by the end of s1 Danny is having an affair with his ex-wife.

And what happens directly after that? Rachel actually leaves Hawai'i for a bit. There's the whole question of Grace's custody and Danny fighting to keep Grace in Hawai'i.

Now yes, Rachel ends up back with Stan (for a bit, anyway). But I find it fascinating that ex-wife Rachel who Danny is angry at gets far, far more screen-time than Rachel when Danny is pursuing her once more. Basically, as soon as she becomes an 'important romantic interest' for Danny - not more screen-time.

Want some stats? She's in 5 episodes of s1, and then not seen again until s5 (thanks to the Hawaii five-0 wiki for making those easy to grab).

Danny and Amber/Melissa

In terms of length of a relationship, Danny's relationship with Amber/Melissa runs through quite a few seasons. However, when we look at her actual screen-time, it's interesting to note that the more time it's been since she and Danny started dating - the less we see of her.

And also, the less she's mentioned. So not only do we not see her on-screen, but she's also not referred to on-screen very much. It got to the point where I would honestly go 'oh, I forgot about her' when she was mentioned. At which point it felt like they were mentioning her just for the sake of 'confirming' Danny's heterosexuality.

Steve and Lynn

The same can be said of Steve and Lynn.

I actually felt that, after burning the Steve and Catherine relationship, the start of Steve and Lynn's relationship was the most promising het one he'd had so far.

I mean, their first date involves getting shot at, which we know is basically like a hobby for Steve.

But then - suddenly - as their relationship continues on, and supposedly, based on length, becomes more 'important', the less of her we see.

She starts out as this interesting, dynamic character, and the longer she and Steve are the together the more she is shown as nothing more than a prop for his heterosexuality.

She isn't there for the 'intervention' about Steve's health that Danny stages (neither is Melissa, although Dog is - what does it say when it's more important to have your random poker buddy at your intervention than your long-term girlfriend?)

Again, not only does Lynn lose screen-time as their relationship progresses, but also mentions of her drop off, until, like Melissa, she'd be mentioned suddenly after a long time of not being mentioned, and I'd go, huh, I forgot about her.

Girlfriends as opposed to Characters

It's like, once they become established girlfriends, the show can no longer treat them as proper characters.

Which makes the het relationships are really hard to believe - because relationships happen between characters.

We indicate who is important to us by how much we talk about and to them. So the fact that, the longer these relationships go on, the less they are even talked about by their supposed boyfriends, well - is it any wonder we find their relationship hard to believe?

And I could probably do a whole 'nother essay about the issues with how this perpetuates a narrative of women as only there for the men's desire, not standing as separate characters on their own, and simply a 'prop' to help show off their 'masculinity' and 'heterosexuality'.

It's incredibly two-dimensional, because to have a 3-dimensional relationship, you'd have to actually give them screen-time, either by putting them on the screen or at least by having other characters talk about them.

So why McDanno?

On the other hand, you've got Steve and Danny continually on screen, continually talking about and to each other, and showing through actions (and words) how much they care about each other.

Yes, they are main characters. But this is why fandoms like to ship main characters together. Because they *are* characters. Because the screen-time given to them tells us that they're important and we care about them.

It's a little hard to take their het relationships seriously when the people they're engaging in all the 'couple' behaviour on-screen with is each other (such as discussing their future plans, staging interventions, visiting each other in hospital, helping do up the house, etc). (and yes, also hugging, arms around shoulders, sitting next to each other while on 'dates' with their girlfriends, etc)

Now, I'm not saying you have to ship McDanno, or that I'd want a whole bunch of screen-time taken up by the next random woman chosen to prove the main's heterosexuality. But I am saying it's kinda hard to value those heterosexual relationships when both the characters, and show, aren't shown to value them.

Title: Jersey Boys

Fandom: Hawaii 5-0, 911

Pairings: eventual McDanno, Buddie

Summary:  In the midst of his divorce from Rachel, Danny Williams runs into a kid on the run from everyone and everything, changing the course of both their lives. 

Tags/warnings: playing with red string of fate theory, alternative universe, Danny adopts Buck by accident, Steve insists on shared custody, and Eddie would like everyone to know that he can be enough for Buck. Not quite a NavySeal!Buck story but has elements of it. First draft.

The kid is probably older than he looks, nursing that bruised jaw of his with the mark above his eye suggesting that tonight’s fight isn’t this kid’s first. 

Fuck.  

Some days, Danny feels ancient. He’s got a bum knee that hates the cold and bitterly complains whenever it rains, an almost ex-wife who’s determined to bleed him dry of every cent he makes despite having traded up financially with her second marriage already pending to an asshole who makes five times a cop’s salary and doesn’t get shot at for a living making it so he only sees his daughter one night a week and every other weekend if he’s lucky. 

Yeah he’s ancient compared to this kid who looks maybe sixteen but his Pennsylvania drivers license claims the kid is nineteen and from Hershey, the land of chocolate.   

“Why aren’t you in school?” Danny idly asks.  The kid looks clean cut enough and the blue eyes watch the bullpen missing nothing suggesting there’s a brain rattling around in that skull underneath the mop of blonde curls. 

“Got kicked out,” kid mutters, turning his chin so that he’s avoiding making direct eye contact with Danny and hiding behind the damned ice pack someone had gotten out of the break room fridge. 

“Which school?”

“Penn State.”

Danny’s eyebrows climb.  “Really?  That’s a good school.”

The kid shrugs mulishly, those baby blues of his becoming slate colored like a curtain has been drawn to keep Danny from seeing too much but it doesn’t happen quick enough. 

Too late, kid.  You’re already tugging at my heart strings like the wounded thing you are.  

“Why’d you get kicked out?”

The kid really should stop chewing on his lower lip or it’s going to bleed.  “I didn’t go to class.”

“Why not?”

“Too much going on.  Couldn’t…”

“Couldn’t what?”

“It was really hard to focus.”

“Did you not like your classes?” Danny prods, knowing he’s hitting a sore spot when the kid’s eyes flick away like Mancovich’s immaculate desk is the most fascinating thing in the world. 

“It was business classes.”

Danny measures the kid up and down.  Kid’s all leg but there’s a lean athletic build to the kid that suggests it’s not all vanity that keeps him skinny.  Probably hasn’t finished growing yet and has another inch or two to go. Idly, Danny worries the kid hasn’t gotten enough to eat.

“You don’t look like a business major,” Danny says instead of offering the kid the sad sandwich he’d put together before coming to work. 

“It’s what my dad does,” the kid mutters so softly that Danny thought he misheard him. 

“Your Dad’s in business?”

“Yeah,” the kid admits, eyes hard and daring Danny to ask him more questions. 

Danny never was one to turn down a dare.  “But did you want to study business?”

The kid’s gaze sharpens into a glare, so Danny takes that as a no. 

“What’re you doing in Newark?”

  “Passing through.”

“Passing through to where?”

Another shrug. “Anywhere.”

“As long as it’s as far away from your parents as you can get? I can relate.”

The glare becomes flinty and purposefully drops to the ring Danny’s still wearing on his left hand. “I’m sure a family guy like you knows all about running away.”

“You’d be surprised.”

“How so?”

“You sure you want to play this game, kid?” Danny cautions.  He’d been asked to take the kid’s witness statement after he’d jumped into a fight where some idiots with more testosterone than brains had decided to commit a little hate crime outside one of the gay-friendly clubs.  Kid was a scrapper, had gotten two schmucks that outweighed him by forty pounds apiece to back off and let their victim run back into the club to call for help. 

Kid was lucky he hadn’t ended up a smear on the pavement before patrol had gotten there. 

“So Evan Buckley,” Danny drawls the kid’s name as he clicks his pen.  “Why don’t you tell me what happened….”

Danny finishes taking Evan Buckley’s statement and thinks it’s going to be the last he sees of the kid so he gives him twenty bucks and orders him to put something in his stomach that isn’t junk food. 

Fate, it seems, has other plans.

I've got new McDanno headcanon so let me do my babbling 😉

What I learnt about children in my ex work or just by observing my familiar kiddos (and by being a child years ago ^^) is that they (many of them) perfectly know adults. They may not know everything but they have great eyes, great ears and great understanding of emotions. And many of them are like little Sherlocks. Also, they can be painfully honest but... Sometimes they don't talk about everything. Sometimes they're too insecure to talk, they don't wanna disturb anything or have many other reasons to hide their "I'm not as unaware as you adults think I am". And... Sometimes instead of talking they express their emotions in other way. And sometimes they hope that their adults will see their sign. What I mean by "in other way"? F.e. drawing. And what I'm talking about? Well...

Let's look at Gracie in the Sarin episode (1x23):

Steve took her from school, told her about Danny and Sarin and now they're in the hospital together. Gracie is drawing. Then doctor comes and Steve says to her "let's go to Danno".

She gives him this look. Can I name it? Okay: cat's look. She's totally focused on Steve. She is looking at him and it looks like she's also deeply thinking about something. Something very Steve-related. Then she:

smiles to him. Cat's smile. She looks like "Yeah". She knows, she's got things to do, she doesn't say anything but in her head thoughts are very loud. Steve has no idea. Danny has no idea.

But she knows.

She sees what Steve always does for Danny. For her. And now, when Danny's life is in danger, when Steve came for her, when Steve is so close, when Steve is there (and Rachel is not), when Steve holds her hand and when Danny is so happy to see them both... She understands even more. How much Danny needs them - them, just them. How much Steve needs Danny (and her). How much she loves Steve for everything. How much she loves Danno. She almost lost him and... She needs to take care of him.

Danno can't take care of himself, Gracie thinks. He's strong, he's her hero. He's a fighter at work and in life. But she has eyes. And ears. And she feels. Yeah, physically he will be fine soon. But Danno's head won't.

Grace knows that Danno always cares more about her and others. That he wants her to be happy but he... He isn't happy. He's rarely happy. She understands. She feels his anxiety, she feels that something is often wrong. It's not that he loves ranting, that he is "just annoying gremlin" like some people joke. She knows her dad, she knows that when he's really happy then he's very different. She doesn't know all his problems, she just feels that he is angry at Rachel (but never at her, she knows well). And that... he is in love with uncle Steve.

Oh, he is very in love. Grace has never seen Danno being in love before. And really, it's so obvious that he's in love with uncle Steve (how can they be so blind, she wonders):

She's okay with that. She loves them deeply. She... needs to help them. They're so blind and unhappy that she needs to show them, needs to do something. They deserve to be happy. Her daddy deserves it. Danno... He almost died. He is alive and Grace... Grace is grateful. Grace now needs to do something for him. To finally do something for him. She owes him. She wants to protect him. Now it's her time to be a Care Bear.

So she gives Danno her drawing:

And she hopes that he will understand.

But Danno says that the pic is lovely and she's his Artist.

She still hopes that he will notice...

Come on, Danno. You're the greatest detective ever!

But naaah. He's as blind as he was before. She really tried...

Okay, let's look at her drawing.

There is her and Danny. And Hawaii.

Hawaii. No Jersey, no England, no "somewhere else". Just Hawaii. Ocean, beach, sun, palms... Their home. It's their home. It's Danno's real home. She knows. She wants the same. She is happy there and Danno is happy too. Hawaii can make Danno happy, she sees it. He wasn't happy in Jersey, he talks about Jersey but... he's different when he's in Hawaii.

Hawaii means home. It means Ohana. Means Danno and Grace being happy like never before. It means Steve.

There is no Rachel. Cause Grace knows. Rachel is her mother - but she isn't Danno's Ohana. Grace knows that Danny doesn't want Rachel in his life. He tries to talk to Rachel, he tries to be calm only for Grace. And Grace understands.

Grace only wants Danno to be happy. So she doesn't want Danny to be with her mother - cause when Danny is with Rachel he is (very) UNhappy. Yeah, it's great when parents are together and very in love - but Gracie knows that it's not her case. Her parents can't love each other. It's okay for her. And she is not going to change Danny's mind, she's not like "please, daddy, come back to mummy! pleeease" - she is not selfish. She is focused on what her daddy needs, what he wants. He can't sacrifice himself for her. Unhappy Danno = unhappy Grace.

So there's no Rachel in the picture. No people and no things that make Danno sad/anxious/mad. Grace needs to make him smile, she wants to help him, help to show him what he deserves. Hawaii. Grace. Ohana (team and other Ohana members aren't there but Hawaii may symbolize them too).

There's also no Steve. BUT. It's a different case than Rachel. Rachel isn't there cause she's not a part of Danny's life. She's not a wanted part. Steve isn't there BUT he can be there. There's a place for Steve. Gracie imagines him there in her head. She didn't draw him cause, I don't know... She didn't want to disturb Danny's (boys') feelings? She is gentle. She can't tell them what should they do. She doesn't know what to say, how to say? She wants to show them, give them a hint. Instead of saying "you dorks love each other" she shows the picture and hopes that at least one of them will notice the sign. Will realize.

"You can draw there uncle Steve", her eyes seem to say.

Oh yes, indeed:

She is looking at Steve. "Yes, Danno. Uncle is your everything! Hey, uncle, did you hear that?".

Boys of her life can't see and can't hear. She tries to do something else but then uncle Steve says his bye bye.

She stays with Danny, soon Kame comes. Grace is playing mobile game (Angry Birds? oh yeah, she's very sad and angry that boys couldn't see her sign, that she failed...).

And then, suddenly, Danny asks:

And Grace says:

Isn't it her way of telling "You, Danno, have no wings"?

Yes, Danno. You know well. You're like an angel, a bird without wings. You can fly - with Steve. You and Grace can fly - with Steve. And you're angry. You're sad. You're anxious. You suffer cause once you were hurt and now when you finally have the real pure love, when you and Grace have someone who loves you more than themselves... You don't see it. You are too afraid to see. To believe in Gracie's picture. In her happy end for you.

Poor Danno. Poor Grace. She's so sad. Her plan failed (maybe it would be better if she drew uncle Steve? maybe these boys need such a BOOM?!). Danno lost his detective skills and now... Oh, someone is calling.

It's Rachel. GOSH. Gracie's face when she sees the name on phone's screen! She's like "Not good". She's like "Nice that you're calling, mum but it's not a good moment".

Oh, Gracie is looking at Danny like a worried guardian angel. She doesn't want to tell him who is calling (he needs to feel good and safe, especially NOW) but he will be curious and she can't lie to him.

She only hopes that Rachel is just calling, not coming there. And speaking about Danno... And Steve. And McDanno. Yeah, she will try again one day. She's Williams, she can't give up.

All of my old ships, like Destiel, Sabriel, Johnlock, Mystrade...I used to be super into Supernatural and Sherlock but I've like completely moved on from them. Though I do like to dive back into Johnlock fics every now and then

USUK from Hetalia or either KakaVege from Dragonball Z. It's between those two, I think

Um...honestly, I can't remember.

No, not really. If I dislike a ship, I just tend not to interact with it. So I won't go looking for content about it or check it out, even if a mutual or someone is talking about it

Sebaciel, Eren x Levi, anything hetalia related...these were all like the normal ships in middle school for me and like...now people (especially on instagram but who the fuck listens to people on instagram) just do not like them. But I still like them.

I never did crack ships, honestly. Which might seem weird to some people but it was just never my thing

13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics off?

Now, if we're talking about my own fanfics, it's Yuezhi. I read so much of my own fics about them. But if we're not then...McDanno is the one who has the most bookmarks in my ao3 bookmarks

14. What most of your ships usually have in common?

Enemies to lovers, doctor x cop, black and white couple (means one wears black/dark clothes majority of the time and the other wears light/white clothes majority of the time), grumpy x sunshine...i'm sure there are other things but i can't remember

15. What you absolutely hate in a ship?

Miscommunication. Like, you're supposed to be in love with each other, right? Which means you communicate with each other for fucks sake. I know miscommunication is a big romance trope but it's just so stupid. It causes so much drama and unnecessary anxiety and just...just fucking talk to each other you assholes (I will give a pass to this trope if it's done well...like you think it's a misunderstanding but actually the characters have talked about this and they're faking the misunderstanding/miscommunication. Killer and Healer has some miscommunication but it actually makes sense why there's miscommunication...doesn't mean I have to like it, but it makes sense, so it gets a pass)

Sometimes I wish more people knew my language. We have not a lot of great musicians, but the ones we have are mostly poets who use music to carve their poetry into hearts and heal the bleeding.

For reasons, I came by a song that I deem, without any fear to be proved wrong, one of the most beautiful song ever written by an Italian songwriter, Franco Battiato. It's titled La Cura (The Cure, but it can also mean healing, care, and therapy), and in a heartbeat, despite having known this song for a lifetime, I understood it's the easiest thing to think about Steve singing this about Danny. Why? Because despite writing the song in honor of his best friend just passed away, this song is the purest expression of Love, in all of its forms: romantic, platonic, familial, friendly. Every kind of love summarized into one song of care, devotion and protection:

Season 9 final episode is boring. The only scenes that I enjoyed were between Adam and Tamiko. It gave me a craving for tamagoyaki.

After 2 seasons, I still don't really care about Junior. I guess on re-watch his character is bland. Tani grew on me.

I just want to punch Aaron Wright smug face.

I absolutely despise the storyline between Danny & Rachel. This relation is toxic. Nice and fun isn't enough to make it work. Even Steve understands.

I choose to take his body language (crossing his arms) as a sign of his displeasure about that relationship. Steve knows Danny will suffer at the end of it all.

I hate the fade to black cheap cliffhanger. It is overused and cliché.

I will never thank enough the writers of the McDanno fandom.

hawaii five o 7x10 when Danny says he started to have feelings for his ex work partner (grace) and steve basically says “yeah i totally get that babe i mean not that im in love with you wtf that’d be so gay im not gay im a manly man” anyway you can see in his eyes he’s hurt because he didn’t want Danny to suffer and doesn’t want him to suffer in 7x10 but you can definitely tell that he can just relate with being in love with your work partner.

im just saying mcdanno is canon.

just a small rant about Buck and his love for the people he cares about

After this episode I think Buck would be a good therapist himself. Not only did he an incredible job with helping Eddie, but he also helped Lucy and he did it in a way both of them could relate to. Seriously Eddie opens up to Buck way more than he ever did with Frank. So I’m really glad Buck gets appreciated for who he is by his familys *cough* Eddie and Chris *cough* fire fam.

This man has so much love to give and he is so innocent about it and it’s so perfect I just can’t! 

On another note: Seeing him with Taylor and him not really caring about her and noticing her problem with her father too late is so unusual for Buck and I think it’s the funniest thing.

His face is not only shocked, but so damn curious. You don't understand how unhinged this scene made me!

He hasn't heard his name in years and he couldn't find anything on Dabi, yet the villian had him completely figured out. Not only his betrayal, but also his backstory. Dedication at it's finest, if you ask me! I just hope Touya's name reveal to Keigo will get the same beautiful animation as Keigo's did from Touya.

You know what gets me in this picture?

We know the man is talking to Eddie, but Buck is the one who reacts! Normally it would be the dad to react to the picture, because this is what the scene tells us through the conversation, right? If you think about it through - a causal viewer maybe wouldn’t know that Chris is Eddie’s kid and if I were a dad, I would react first. So to me this affirms even more that Buck is Christophers second dad!

Oh my god this episode killed me!! Do you have any idea how attuned Buck is to Eddie to hear him (with his helmet still on!) and react immediately? Eddie really just has to say Buck’s name and the boy comes running. God forbid that Eddie has to wait for Buck. I just love them so much and this is my favorite moment in the episode. Finally they are back together *wipes tear away*

If Steve didn't want his co-workers to assume he was taking a vacation to 'reconnect' with his partner perhaps he shouldn't have looked at Danny like that and touched him in a way that indicated that this decision to take days off is directly related to him. Subtlety, thy name is not McDanno.
