The Best Is Yet To Come - Wendy Beauchamp/Charlotte Richards, Joanna Beauchamp/Mazikeen

A/N: Part 5/5 for @flufftober​ ‘s Pride Edition. 

“I’m proud of you, Wendy…” Joanna’s voice is soft enough that Wendy knows she’s fighting tears. It’s strong enough of a tell that she can feel her own wanting to escape, choosing instead to hug Joanna tightly. “I’m proud of you too Joanna.” They haven’t spoken like this for a while, both too busy with their lives, but Wendy knows Joanna has always been there if she needed her, now she can’t help smiling at how gently confident Joanna is with Mazikeen. Joanna, for her part, watches Wendy with Charlotte and smiles. Finally, she thinks, finally Wendy has love, the love she always deserved. She’s proud. Not just of Wendy, but of Charlotte. She had met the woman a couple of times, she knew how hard it had to have been for Charlotte to say yes, but she had and now… now she was safe.

Watching The Sandman again for the hundreth time and I know everyone always loves to focus on Dreamling, but can we talk about Rose Walker for a moment?

The Sandman is often applauded (and complained about) for being an extremely gay show, but I particularly love how even the characters who aren’t canonically gay come across as extremely gay.

Take Rose Walker. The main character of The Doll’s House story. Neither the show nor the comics ever give Rose a sexuality, but there are some very glaring factors that heavily support her being queer.

The first time we see Rose is in episode 5 24/7. Judy, the lesbian at the diner who has had a fight with her girlfriend Donna, calls Rose and asks if Rose knows where Donna is. We know that Rose considers both Judy and Donna close friends and has a picture of Judy in her apartment.

Rose’s only other friend that we know of besides Lyta Hall (who she got to know via proximity since they were neighbours) is her friend Carl who she clearly is close enough with to let him house sit for her (even though he has sex with The Corinthian on her bed!).

So her closest friends are a lesbian couple and a gay man. I know I know straight people can be friends with queer people but statistically speaking queers flock together. Its more likely that Lyta is the token straight in the friend group than Rose AND Lyta both being straight.

I also question her choice of seeking out accomodation in Cape Kennedy. Isn��t it interesting how she ends up in a very strange B&B also managed by a gay drag artist and filled with colourful characters including Chantal and Zelda (I know their relationship is supposed to remain ambiguous but imo the show also leans more into them being lesbians due to Chantal’s dream where she calls them “soul sisters” and “gothic brides” and I dunno I just think the fact she refers to them as brides is pretty telling!)

Of all your accomodation choices in Florida, this in particular seems like the kind of place one would go to if they were specifically looking for somewhere advertised as “LGBT friendly”. All the characters staying at the B&B are either canonically queer or heavily queer coded.

Gilbert/Fiddlers Green isn’t technically human, but his whole aura is distinguished older gay man - he’s played by Stephen Fry after all!

Also I could go on about Barbie (who I theorise found the accomodation for her and Ken) but without revealing any comic spoilers, she also later surrounds herself with basically all queer people. I know in the comics she is strictly heterosexual, but nah she dreams like a queer theatre kid on speed or something lmao. That girl is a bisexual disaster all the way and yeah I may be projecting on her as a fellow blonde overly dramatic dreamer and disaster bisexual but I claim her for my own okay just let me have this.

So yeah, the queer friendship groups, the specific seeking out of an LGBTQ friendly b&b in Florida, and the fact that she literally wears rainbows in her hair and I think its clear enough that that girl is a baby queer if ever I saw one.

Due to the merging of Rose and Lyta’s stories in the Netflix show, we should actually get to see more of Rose in future seasons. In the comics, after the Dolls House book, she doesn’t appear again (unless she turns up in the Wake since I haven’t read that far ahead), but by making her Lyta’s companion in the show, we know she will appear again since Lyta and the baby (Daniel not that he has been named yet in the show) are reoccuring characters throughout the entire Sandman comic run.

Maybe I just crave more lesbian and bisexual women rep in my fave shows, but sitting here watching this show again it just tickles me that in the entirety of season 1, it is so easy to view practically every major female or female presenting character as queer. Joanna Constantine and Rachel, Judy and Bette, Lucifer and Mazikeen (bring on the make out scene in season 2!), Chantal and Zelda, and in my opinion, Rose Walker, Barbie, Lucienne, and Gault are all queer coded WLW.

(Lucienne and Gault is just a ship I love okay but you can’t deny there was some flirting in episode 10!)

It’s been such a crappy year for lesbian rep with lesbian shows getting cancelled left right and centre. I just think lesbians should therefore claim the Sandman as theirs. if nothing else, claim it out of spite. It’s a fantasy show with a pathetic wet cat emo boy as a main character who literally surrounds himself with lesbians, is probably in love with his best friend, and considers a slutty gay serial killer with teeth for eyes his greatest ever creation. It just seems to me like the kind of show that should appeal heavily to WLW okay! Plus there are more lesbians coming in season 2! Encourage your lesbian and bisexual friends to go watch The Sandman now!

All the changes from the source material that are known so far

Mild Netflix's The Sandman spoilers ahead!  Here are all the deviations from the original plot that I know of, some of which I knew about as early as 2019.

1.  Morpheus will be held captive for over a century instead of seventy years and, yes, this will effect his reunion with Hob.

2.  This is a big one.  Jessamy the Raven tries to rescue Morpheus in his captivity but gets shot and killed by Alex under pressure from his father, Roderick.   This is why you will keep seeing me say #JusticeForJessamy!    I'm also concerned about how she finds him.  I know Morpheus and his subjects are psychically linked but that binding circle should have severed that connection or Lucienne would have been able to find him.  

3.   The Corinthian will be in it a lot more and he even advises Roderick on how best to contain his prisoner.

4.    According to The Corinthian audition (which is a conversation with Roderick) the aging of those holding Morpheus will be slowed.  This accounts for why Alex is still alive when Morpheus escapes.

5.   According to the casting call Roderick is a fraud with no real magick.  This bugs me a bit.  I liked the idea of him making Ruthven Syke's head explode and I hate the idea that the only magick he has is from the Magdaline Grimoire.

6.  Lucien is now Lucienne.

7.   John Constantine is now Joanna Constantine.  There is still the eighteenth century Johanna Constantine but you will also see present day Joanna Constantine, who has a much more posh clientele than John had.

8.   This is a hunch- I do no think Morpheus's "battle" is with Chorozon in this version.

9.   Desire seduces, instead of rapes, Unity.  This time the interaction is going to be made to look much more consensual.

10.   There will be no appearance of Mr. Miracle or Martian Manhunter.

11.  Morpheus's escape will be more dramatic. (Slight disappointment here as part of what I liked about the story is there weren't a lot of explosions or physical combat.)

12.   Roderick has a new motivation for wanting to capture Death.  He lost a son in World War 1 and takes out his anger about that on poor Alex.  It appears Roderick's character has been combined with Hathaway.  Personally, I don't think Roderick needed the extra motivation.  He was a wanna-be big shot occultist.  He wanted to capture Death for the clout.  That should be enough.   He doesn't need to be made sympathetic. 13.  I THINK we will see Mazikeen in this.  Originally she was not shown until The Sandman: Season of Mists.

Thoughts under the cut because spoilers!

AHHHH GAULT WAS SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL 😭 seriously most beautiful ever I’m in love. My eyes were shiny hearts looking at her. And the lil smile with Lucienne was so cute.

I’m so happy Rose and Jed made it WHEW! I was rly thinking Rose was gonna pass to the great fiddlers green beyond.

Goddamn the whole serial killer, child abuser, and and child molester angle was *rough* I had to fast forward parts. Like it leaned hard into putting the most precious fictional child to ever exist (Jed) in some horrific situations. That was ROUGH. And the gore that comes with serial killer shit is not something I enjoy. It’s actually why I avoid realistic dramas and stick with fantasy. But here we are.

But obviously thank Chuck he was good in the end.

Even tho Dream was gonna kill Rose, it was sweet how proud he seemed of her. She got one of his itty bitty little smiles. That’s a weird sentence but true.

Damn Hal bagged a hottie. I was so worried about said hottie when he hooked up with teetheyes but so glad he made it out too.

I never fully understood Desire’s…desire. What the point was. He looked damn good doing it but I didn’t really catch what it was.

Why does Dream have sexual chemistry with almost everyone. I mean I get it, but still.

As a witcher fan, I said PHILIPPA! When Mazikeen popped up again. And in that last scene I swear my sister went, WAIT IS THAT BRIENNE? 😂 yes girl you just noticed?

It was so satisfying what Dream did to all the serial killers. I also really loved how well he made up to Lucienne. He grew so much as a person. Also, side note. Lucienne’s ears are adorable.

Completely random thing but there was a photo of Jude, the girl from the diner, in Rose’s apartment. Was I supposed to remember why?

So yeah. Glad I watched it. Dream was a fascinating character and that world and the characters in it were too.

As a whole, my least favorite ep was the one with the diner. I just lost interest when I didn’t get *any* Dream (I didn’t realize how fascinated I was with him until he wasn’t on screen) and also fuck John and that whole ass family. Also the momentum just kind of sagged a bit in the middle.

My most favorite might actually still be the first one. It was just so chilling and visually iconic. But I also loved the episode with Death. She just lit up the screen and I live for sibling dynamic. I also loved Joanna Constantine.

I’m definitely into this for S2 if we get one.

The Real You Is Beautiful - Joanna Beauchamp/Mazikeen

A/N: Part 1 of @flufftober​ ‘s Fluff Monthly Pride Edition. 

“You don’t even know the real me…” “Then show me.” Joanna’s voice is soft even as she pulls Mazikeen closer, smiling when Mazikeen does finally drop the mask hiding her demonic side, her touch soft against the woman’s demonic face, stroking her cheekbone gently. “Beautiful. You are beautiful.” The music switches and Joanna barely hides her laugh as she moves closer, risking the softest of kisses even as Mazikeen hides again, leaning into her touch. “Rejoice your truth…” The words are whispered but Mazikeen smiles again, letting her hands rest at Joanna’s hips as she kisses her again. She’s never really known how to ‘rejoice in truth’ but Joanna’s love makes it easier to let herself love who she is, all of who she is.

Season of Mists is my FAVOURITE of The Sandman books I love it its a really excellent story that centers around Morpheus, includes a whole bunch of colourful characters and hilarious situations and I absolutely can’t WAIT to see it adapted.

Things I am most looking forward to include:

Desire poking Dream until Dream snaps and Destiny has to tell him off at the family dinner (I’m on Desire’s side - sorry not sorry lol)

Obviously Hob’s dream where Dream puts a lot of effort into searching the dreams of various people to find a specific vintage of wine as a gift for Hob just so he can tell Hob he may miss their next meeting and the whole thing is loaded full of subtext and I can’t even imagine how the Netflix show will push it further - but I know it WILL.

I love ALL his meetings with the various gods and other creatures that takes place, but the little girl Chaos is adorable and I honestly hope they adapt this frame for frame - I just wanna see Tom Sturridge’s pretty emo pout whilst holding a balloon lol

And the thing I am MOST looking forward to is THIS:

If the show goes further than Season of Mists (assuming it will since Season 1 included both Preludes and Nocturns AND The Doll’s House) then we can also look forward to them tackling:

Exactly what task Lady Joanna Constantine performed so admirably for Dream (and holy shit that’s gonna be a tough one to adapt)

Barbie’s dream and all the strange little critters that help her

WANDA (I hope they change her ending somehow whilst still making the point they made with her death)

Thessaly - interested to see how much we’ll see of *this* relationship since the comics give us nothing - then again, the relationship isn’t even hinted to until after A Game of You so I dunno if it’ll even be included in S2.

Also it tickles me how much gayer the comics get. Can’t wait to meet Cluracan the fairy ambassador, Hazel and Donna, and Wanda of course. (Not to mention how Lucifer and Mazikeen would now be seen as a queer relationship). It’s gonna be so fun to see the Straights(TM) once again stupidly complain about the existence of gay people! (manifesting the show pulling a power move and have Desire casually mention a male lover of Dream’s during their listing of his past failed relationships - if you’re gonna be known as the gay fantasy show anyway you might as well go all the way and make your main character queer too)

Mazikeen rolled her eyes, as they stood at the entrance to the club. She’d been given a task by Lucifer: Make Jo loosen up for once, and have a good time. See what information she could get out of her.

Of course, considering her opinion on Joanna, it had taken some gentle persuasion, however when it came down to it, The Demon had agreed.

Perhaps it wouldn’t be too bad, and they could actually get along for once, but judging by Jo’s reluctancy to go to even the first club, there was a considerable amount of doubt in Maze’s mind.

This was going to be harder than she thought.

❛What’s wrong with it anyway?❜

Maze asked, raising an eyebrow at her.

❛I can get us in for free, because I’m me. We get a few drinks, flirt with a few guys, or girls - I’m not fussy, and do a few lines and cocktails.❜

She listed, knowing full well that Joanna would be mortified. It just added to her fun.

❛No big deal, right?❜

Jo arched an eyebrow at the woman standing next to her. She had been incredibly skeptical about this night, but there had been pressure from all sides until she finally gave in.

It thoroughly annoyed her that people thought she was uptight. She knew how to relax and have fun. Just because it wasn’t their idea of fun didn’t mean it was any less valid.

“Drinking and flirting I’m fine with... but the drugs are all yours,” she said, running a hand through her hair, long blonde locks falling over her shoulders. Ruining her nasal passages with coke didn’t sound like a fun to her. She’d leave the hard stuff to the immortal near-invincible Demon.

Representation that will be in the first season of The Sandman

I’ve seen two very drastically different arguments about the representation in the first season of The Sandman Netflix series. The first argument is the tired “Get Woke, go broke.” and otherwise complaining that the casting is “too woke.”  

The other complaint is actually concern that there isn’t enough representation in The Sandman.    So here’s a list of the representation in the first season of The Sandman that I know of thus far... LGBTQ representation in the first season of The Sandman:

The Corinthian - Gay Lucifer - Genderfluid, Panasexual (played by a woman) Mazikeen - female presenting Panasexual (Lucifer’s lover) Desire - Nonbinary, Panasexual (played by a nonbinary actor) Alexander Burgess - Gay (Or bisexual) Paul - Gay (Alexander Burgess’s lover) Johanna Constantine - Bisexual Rachel - Lesbian (or bisexual) (Joanna’s former lover) Judy - Lesbian Donna - (might just be name dropped this season but will turn up later) Lesbian (Judy’s exgirlfriend)

Hal Carter - Gender nonconforming, Gay 

Lucienne - Possibly asexual (never confirmed)

Cain - Possibly asexual (never confirmed) Abel - Very likely asexual (and raising a baby Gargoyle like he’s is child). Morpheus - very likely what we’d today call demi-sexual / Pan Romantic (The terms didn’t exist yet when The Sandman was written.) And this is just what I know to be in the first season. Morpheus -  I have already seen very good arguments suggesting that he’s autistic coded but I don’t really think that was intended.

It’s been a week since Joanna first came here, to Lux. It’s been a week since Wendy came home and instantly chose Charlotte over staying at home forever. It’s been a week since Maze’s world changed completely. Thoughts and questions ran through Maze’s mind like water but she doesn’t talk about it, doesn’t ask, focuses in on Joanna and the constant need to be sure she’s okay. The woman’s already slightly risky drinking habits are getting worse and she makes a choice at last. “Come on, I’m taking you home.” Joanna tries to protest, of course, but Maze cuts her off, gently. Kisses her silent, then leads her out, almost half-carrying the already tipsy woman. She spends the night, watches Joanna sleep, hopes that somehow, somehow, she will find the way to help her. Joanna wakes to dark eyes focused on her, a hand closing at her wrist when she makes to bolt, keeping her there. She wants so badly to run. She’s always been so careful, but then she hears what Mazikeen, the barkeeper she’s come to care about so much, is saying. “Nothing happened Joanna. Nothing happened…” “Then…” “I wanted to make sure you were alright.” It's honest, so honest it chokes her a little but Maze knows she has to risk it. “I don’t think I’ll be… alright… for a while.” “Your sister?” “Yeah. That.” It's a lie. Mazikeen knows that instantly in the way Joanna pulls free and crosses to the window of her room. She follows, turns Joanna and looks her in the eyes. “You can’t kill me Joanna. I’m literally a demon. They can’t kill me… no matter how they try.” “Maze…” “Just shut up for once.” Mazikeen mutters, tangling a firm hand into soft brunette curls, pulling Joanna’s lips down to her own and kissing her deeply, passionately, she can’t tell her what she’s feeling but she can show her, she can always show her. Joanna’s breath catches and Maze smirks, letting the kiss deepen before pressing closer, backing Joanna against the glass. For now, for now it’s enough to kiss her, to want her so much it burns. For now she can wait, she won’t rush this one.

Dancing In The Rain And Moonlight - Wendy Beauchamp/Mazikeen, Joanna Beauchamp/Charlotte Richards

The thought of dancing in the rain had caused Charlotte to shudder, moving to join Joanna in the kitchen instead, smiling just slightly and accepting the tea she’s offered. Wendy, Joanna’s sister, is soon outside in the rain, quickly joined by Mazikeen. Here, watching Mazikeen laugh and dance with Wendy, Charlotte starts to think that maybe, just maybe, she can learn to be happy here with Mazikeen and the family of witches they had come to know and care for. “They’ll get colds…” “Well… Wendy might.” Charlotte mutters. “Maze is pretty hard to make sick…” Joanna smiles just slightly, shrugging. “Well, I hope she’s a good nurse then…. Wendy gets a little whiny…” “I’m sure she’ll be fine.” Charlotte laughs. “You were… in the end.”
