6. The Maze Runner

Another rewatch, although I had forgetten so much of the plot of the movie and book that it might as well have been a first impression, I was excited to get back into the story I enjoyed so much as a kid.

We enter the movie immediately in disarray along with our protagonist, Thomas. He doesn’t know what is going on and neither do we. He wakes up in a box that comes up from the ground into this camp of all boys and he can’t even remember his name at first. Immediately, like anyone would be, he wants to figure out how to get free and back to his life in civilization. The rest of the boys in the camp tell him that is not possible because they have tried everything. The only way one out is through the Maze. The Maze so happens to be a living death trap that doesn’t take kindly to explorers.

Certain boys in their camp are Runners and these Runners are the ones who explore and map the Maze to try to locate an exit. Thomas wants to be a Runner. Certain boys doubt his abilities, but he is determined.

As a character, perhaps just in this movie and maybe it’s different in the book, Thomas is hard to root for. You just don’t know too much about him because he is a blank slate of a person. He is kind and compassionate in the movie, but it doesn’t tell us much. However because he is a blank slate, it makes it easier to put yourself in his position.

The struggles are many, but Thomas and the boys are determined to get out.
