I just finished watching Stand by Me for the first time (I'm a heathen, I know) and man it gave me such Heart Boys vibes. Just Law, Penguin, Shachi, and Bepo going off on some misadventure, arguing, joking, and bonding along the way while they journey to find a dead body. I just want the boys to get to enjoy some of that innocence of youth (yes, I know, impossible for Law but let me dream) before they set off to become pirates.

Lawrusso: Young Hearts
Try to make it last Nothing you can do In a photograph The innocence you thought you lost Is staring back at you
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time enough to live Never time to die All you had to give Taken by the one you loved And geared into a lie
Tumblr media
Young hearts beat fast Driving down the road Rubber, plastic, metal, glass Why did you have to go? Young hearts die young When they're all alone And there's no turning back now

Young hearts die young When they're all alone And there's no turning back now

Young Hearts
I was listening to the radio on the way home from work today. A song came on that I haven’t heard on the radio in quite some time. It was Young Turks by Rod Stewart. I found myself wondering as I often have have over the years why the song is called Young Turks when the lyrics clearly state “Young Hearts”. So I finally looked it up.

Honestly I prefer Young Hearts. But that’s just me.

I just watched such an amazing movie at berlinale: young hearts.
it's a coming of age/coming out story. but the focus is not on older teens or young adults like it's usually the case, rather on kids at the beginning of puberty, around 13 years old. The clumsy "Do you wanna go out with me? yes/no/maybe" phase . Little touches, little kisses, first tries at romance and relationships. and the film really succeeds in capturing these tender first feelings, how wonderful and overwhelming they are, even more so if the person you fall in love with happens to be a boy like yourself.
the movie is set in summer which lends it a certain fleeting ease, sometimes nostalgia. its tone is sweet, even lighthearted, but not without depth. the child actors are really amazing & have great chemistry.
there was a q&a afterwards with the director (seems to be a really likeable, kind person) and he said he basically wanted to make a kid's movie about gay feelings/coming out, something also an 8-year-old could watch. because there are barely any movies out there which attempt to tell these very first queer love stories. and he's so right and it was healing for me to watch the main character getting braver about his affection for the new boy in class scene by scene. it was healing because it's really rare to see love between men/boys depicted as something so innocent and tender as a very first romance. especially now when there is this conservative push to (again) understand queerness as sth inherently sexual if not perverted.
when young hearts hits theatres i hope it gets at least a bit of success. I mean it's rather a small european movie, also feels a bit slice of life genre-wise, certainly no grand blockbuster with big names in it. so I don't know how many people it will reach. but should you have the chance to watch it I highly recommend it it's so feel-good, even reparative

For the men i’ve endured; i know what you’ve done
‘where is your heart?’
i don’t have one, i’ve filled it with fake intimacy and desperate affections in a hope to convince myself that i am wanted.
However it left me feeling less wanted than ever
The black casing of it infused with the dark intentions of the men in my life who deceived me of love. Deliberately blindfolding my eyes whilst describing to me the vision of our future he can see ahead.
I never realised why they blindfolded me but now i understand; the hope they maliciously gifted me was sightless.
and yet somehow with all this knowledge i choose to keep the blindfold on.

Reeling Film Festival 2024: Mini Reviews and Recaps
For the first time in my reviewing career, I’m attending a film festival! Reeling is a queer international film festival in Chicago that is current in its 42nd year. What started as a small showing of local films has turned into an international celebration of LGBTQ+ filmmakers and stories. This year, there’s over 50 films being shown from September 19th to September 29th. I will be writing some…

“Um … Excuse me,” says a small, quiet voice. He shrinks down a little when eyes are turned to him, too small hands rising to grab the rim of his fluffy hat. The boy with his sharp, golden eyes looks like he wants to hide in that hat but there is some determination in the set of his jaw and the way he tries to straighten his posture, despite the clear anxiety.    “I think I’m lost. Can you help me?”

Ikkaku didn't blink when she heard a child's voice behind her, getting her attention. Of the Heart Pirates, she was often the one children approached as she generally looked and acted the least threatening. It helped that she liked kids, too, often carrying sweets in her pockets to give nice kids who kept their manners or were at least adorably snarky and precocious.
However, she did blink in surprise when she found herself face-to-face with a small child in a familiar hat and golden eyes. He was...well, he could be a mini-Law, to be honest, and she nearly cooed instinctually at the sight of him. The thing that stopped her was the strange twisting in her gut. She brushed it off as just the sadness that hit her when she remembered the bits of her captain's sad past that he'd revealed to her, even if this felt different. Ikkaku did, however, crouch down to reach his eye level, doing her best to appear friendly when she saw him shrink back a bit. She smiled when she saw the determined set of his jaw, despite the weird feeling it gave her. It just made him seem more Law-like.
"Well, you came to the right person," she assured, pulling a piece of vanilla taffy out of her pocket and holding it out to him. "I'm pretty good at leading people in the right direction! If you're lost, I'll help you find your way."
A few beads of sweat ran down the back of her neck. Ikkaku had no idea why she felt so...nervous? No, but there was a sort of tension in the air. An anticipation. An unease. Something was off, and her gut was trying to tell her. This kid was the perfect mini-Law. Too perfect. Exactly as she might have imagined him when he was little. Precious and sweet, despite her captain being anything but as an adult. If he were less sweet, she'd suspect Jewelry Bonney had used her powers on him. But his personality wasn't anything like Law would be if he'd been reduced to his childhood age. He'd still be a bastard. This kid...well, so far, he wasn't that.
Deciding to test a theory, at least in hopes that she could settle this unease in her stomach, Ikkaku said kindly, "My name's Ikkaku. I'm a submarine engineer. What's your name, sweetheart?"

in young hearts Sam says "What do you think's ahead for him? We just sent him into 1998 with an angel boyfriend" and in the intro to part 3 your author here says "like the ending of Clue, this is how it could have happened" but we learn that not everything is as expected
but there is a version in my head where Past-Cas and Teen-Dean end up back at Bobby's and find a spell in the MoL bunker to get Cas his own (identical) vessel without possessing someone. and before they get to make the most of it, the British MoL show up and our boys skedaddle back to Bobby's, then end up taking the bus back to Sam and John but John's gone on a hunt by the time Dean gets there
so Dean gets to just... introduce Cas to Sam. without John as a looming presence. and when Sam goes to school the next day it's the first time they're together behind a closed door in their own respective bodies and it's corny to say he feels made new, but...
and they spend every day together and Cas helps Sam with his physics homework and the three of them go out to a concert together one weekend and Sam gets to start normal habits. he goes out with friends for coffee and sweet drinks, kills time with them in the mall, and gets invited out to skate with them and Dean goes too and spends all his time at the other end of the rink teaching Cas how to ice-skate
Cas mostly wears Dean's jeans but has a few shirts of his own and a handsome coat of corduroy and fleece because hunters have sharp eyes for anything unusual and Dean has told him, "if I put on a coat, you put on a coat, if I'm in a t-shirt, don't be in a sweater"
and they visit Essie at the library even though she doesn't know how well she'll one day know them, and learn that her husband, still living, owns a music supply shop and plays trombone, his jazz group has a gig in town, and even though it's not Dean's scene him and Cas can toy with hands under the table in a dim-lit lounge and furtively abscond to the men's room and it's actually like a real life date
and I'm not going anywhere with this I just have known it all a long time and thought someone might like to picture it along with me
