[ID. Transparent image of Ned McDodd, the Mayor of Whoville. He is a Who, a whimsical sort of guy, who looks like he's balding despite having fur over his whole body, and is wearing a full-body blue vest. End ID.]

We watched Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! (2008) IMDb link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451079/ Horton Hears a Who! is a 2008 computer animated comedy film based on the book by Dr Seuss. The film was produced by Blue Sky Studios and directed by Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino. The film features the voices of Jim Carrey as Horton the elephant and Steve carell as Mayor Ned McDodd. John Powell composed the films musical score. As with many Dr Seuss stories the plot is creative, bizarre and complex. Here is the wiki description: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horton_Hears_a_Who!_(film) And follow this link for a video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InIEECDCSYU One of my favourite characters in the film is Vlad Vladikoff the vulture who is voiced by Will Arnett. Will Arnett also voiced the Lone Gunslinger vulture in Ice Age 2 The Meltdown and features in Ratatouille, Monsters Vs. Aliens, G-Force, Despicable Me and as Batman in the Lego Movies. Debi Derryberry also voices a minor part (A Who Mum and Additional Voices) and is mentioned in my other film reviews. Dr Seuss's widow, Audrey Geisel, was so unhappy with the 2003 film The Cat in the Hat, that she decided not to allow anymore live action films based on his work. After much effort, Geisel agreed to the making of the animation and was credited as a supervising producer which a seven figure deal was agreed. This wasn't a problem for Blue Sky Studios as the film was a box office success grossing nearly $300 million dollars on a budget of $85 million. The film received very positive critical reviews praising the film for capturing the spirit of Dr Seuss. In 2011, a Blu-Ray combo pack with DVD was released featuring the Ice Age related short film, Surviving Sid. The aspect ratio of Horton Hears a Who! is 1.85:1. Blue Sky Studio’s Horton Hears a Who! was animated and rendered using the same hardware as 2006s Ice Age 2 The Meltdown.
The hardware was Angstrom Microsystems Titan64 Creator workstations with AMD Opteron™ High-performance Workstation processors and Angstrom Titan64 SuperBlade rendering servers to animate the films.
See the links below to see the specifications of these systems. https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20060403006246/en/Blue-Sky-Studios-TM-Selects-Angstrom-Microsystems In 2009, Blue Sky Studios gave their Angstrom Microsystems hardware to Wesleyan University. Blue Sky Studios switched to using Sun Microsystems. They used Sun Blade X6250 server modules and Sun Ultra workstations for the rendering of their new animated feature Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
https://newsletter.blogs.wesleyan.edu/2009/07/14/company-donates-animation-computers-to-wesleyan/ Like all Dr Seuss' creations, Horton Hears a Who! delivers an important message.
The major theme running through the film stresses the values between different people from different places and different cultures, ''A persons a person no matter how small.'' Although the animation of the film looks more like a cartoon than the Ice Age films, I still enjoyed it very much. I particularly liked the sound effects and the way they bring the story to life.

Horton Hears a Who! (2008)

There's no doubt about it. Horton Hears a Who! is the best full-length adaptation of a Dr. Seuss book. That’s faint praise. How about "it's a fun animated film" instead? Featuring a good message for children and some good laughs, it's geared more towards the young audience members but the adults will enjoy it as well.
Horton (voiced by Jim Carrey) is an elephant who stumbles upon a speck, the home of hundreds of thousands of Whos. Only is aware of their existence thanks to his big ears. As Horton attempts to communicate with Whoville's Mayor, Ned McDodd (Steve Carell), he draws the ire of Sour Kangaroo (Carol Burnett) who refuses to tolerate such nonsense.
This film is almost there. It could have been great, but a couple of hiccups make it simply a good adaptation. The book by Dr. Seuss has been expanded with a secondary story that parallels Horton’s plight to be heard and some additional character development. The voice actors matching the energy of the animators with ease. Several sequences will have you laughing hard. A demonstration of how Horton's actions have dramatic consequences on the tiny world of the Whos being the film's best scene. The tension that’s created when Horton finds himself in trouble, combined with the comedy of seeing the unassuming inhabitants try to get along with their day while everything is flying in all directions is inspired and original. Overall, this story works much, much better than the previous live-action attempts at bringing Theodor Geisel's works to the big screen.
While you want to commend the energy he brings to his role, sometimes the movie feels more like “Jim Carrey Hears a Who!”. The message of “A person is still a person, no matter how small” is preserved. Horton's personality... not so much. He’s agitated and spastic. Combined with his wild imagination, it's no wonder the animals don't believe his stories of a microscopic populace. It fits the story but is far removed from the meek creature that couldn’t even stand up to a bossy Kangaroo with no genuine authority. It feels as though Carrey was cast due to his comedic stylings and popularity with families, not because he suits the character.
There are a few times where the story lacks confidence. Horton Hears a Who! often resorts to its titular character performing funny dances playing with his ears or making wild faces just to get a laugh. These do not feel like they came from the screenplay or Carey but rather from the animators, who got bored telling a story with an earnest message and wanted something to put on their resume. Or maybe the movie doesn't believe you're smart enough to pay attention to something serious.
Horton Hears a Who! is no classic. The new material it brings doesn't add much to the simple story that's been enjoyed since 1954. As a piece of entertainment that also happens the teach self-confidence, how much of a difference and individual can make, and that everyone deserves to be treated equally no matter what, it does offer young audiences quite a bit. You'll also get some laughs along the way. It's certainly worth a watch, maybe even two or three. (On DVD, February 20, 2015)

Listen I know the anime scene in the Horton Hears A Who movie was kinda cringe but I always thought it was a pretty cute detail here that because Horton doesn't know what the Mayor looks like, he see's him as the clover itself. ^w^
