Recommendation: Schmigadoon! (Season 1, 2021) creators: Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio cast: Cecily Strong, Keegan-Michael Key, Alan Cumming This is like a dream that I think many musical lovers, especially those in love with old Golden Age ones probably once had. A town that is nothing but musical references, where "life is a musical every day". The fact that you get to see it and have Barry Sonnenfeld's direction guide you through it is just a cherry on top of it. This is a show that is made by musical nerds for other musical nerds, and I LOVED it. There are problems, and some of the pastiches and parodies tend to get a little heavy-handed, but that is balanced by a great score and a lot of great musical scenes that follow it. It shows a lot of care that have been put into making something with love and passion, and that really shows in the final product. The passion oozes out of the screen into the eyeballs of people watching it. Also, I would be amiss not mentioning the great job that the ensemble cast did. They really embodied the characters, and from big roles like Alan Cumming to small ones like Martin Short, it was a joy to see them act, interact and definitely sing. I really recommend this show just for the crazy atmosphere, but if you are a musical fan my recommendation gets tenfold. Check it out, you'll have fun in Schmigadoon! #schmigadoon #cincopaul #kendaurio #cecilystrong #keeganmichaelkey #alancumming #comedy #musical #tvshow #parody #homage #ak88recommendation https://www.instagram.com/p/CSxGQ6ZgY76/?utm_medium=tumblr

Horton Hears a Who! (2008)
Tumblr media
There's no doubt about it. Horton Hears a Who! is the best full-length adaptation of a Dr. Seuss book. That’s faint praise. How about "it's a fun animated film" instead? Featuring a good message for children and some good laughs, it's geared more towards the young audience members but the adults will enjoy it as well.
Horton (voiced by Jim Carrey) is an elephant who stumbles upon a speck, the home of hundreds of thousands of Whos. Only is aware of their existence thanks to his big ears. As Horton attempts to communicate with Whoville's Mayor, Ned McDodd (Steve Carell), he draws the ire of Sour Kangaroo (Carol Burnett) who refuses to tolerate such nonsense.
This film is almost there. It could have been great, but a couple of hiccups make it simply a good adaptation. The book by Dr. Seuss has been expanded with a secondary story that parallels Horton’s plight to be heard and some additional character development. The voice actors matching the energy of the animators with ease. Several sequences will have you laughing hard. A demonstration of how Horton's actions have dramatic consequences on the tiny world of the Whos being the film's best scene. The tension that’s created when Horton finds himself in trouble, combined with the comedy of seeing the unassuming inhabitants try to get along with their day while everything is flying in all directions is inspired and original. Overall, this story works much, much better than the previous live-action attempts at bringing Theodor Geisel's works to the big screen.
While you want to commend the energy he brings to his role, sometimes the movie feels more like “Jim Carrey Hears a Who!”. The message of “A person is still a person, no matter how small” is preserved. Horton's personality... not so much. He’s agitated and spastic. Combined with his wild imagination, it's no wonder the animals don't believe his stories of a microscopic populace. It fits the story but is far removed from the meek creature that couldn’t even stand up to a bossy Kangaroo with no genuine authority. It feels as though Carrey was cast due to his comedic stylings and popularity with families, not because he suits the character.
There are a few times where the story lacks confidence. Horton Hears a Who! often resorts to its titular character performing funny dances playing with his ears or making wild faces just to get a laugh. These do not feel like they came from the screenplay or Carey but rather from the animators, who got bored telling a story with an earnest message and wanted something to put on their resume. Or maybe the movie doesn't believe you're smart enough to pay attention to something serious.
Horton Hears a Who! is no classic. The new material it brings doesn't add much to the simple story that's been enjoyed since 1954. As a piece of entertainment that also happens the teach self-confidence, how much of a difference and individual can make, and that everyone deserves to be treated equally no matter what, it does offer young audiences quite a bit. You'll also get some laughs along the way. It's certainly worth a watch, maybe even two or three. (On DVD, February 20, 2015)
