Misconduct Chapter 4

For the ending portion i didn’t write in an outfit cause well, personally i like to leave the reader the freedom to add in their own style. Not everyone would like/be comfortable in my own preferences, so I try to allow for freedom on your end. (also cause some fics ive read i say im not wearing that)

Of course Tseng confiscated the PHS. Gifting Genesis with another one and sending him off to training as there was ‘still another hour left’. Though, not before chewing Genesis out for nearly ten minutes on why he should constantly be in the loop for any activity or extra measures being taken in regards to your case. Taking time out to point out that it’s also a ‘safety concern’. Though Genesis was suspicious that Tseng was trying to sneak in petty things to provide Genesis with the reasons he was in this predicament. He certainly didn’t seem to be the most excited to work with the SOLDIER. 

The room the class was held in was dark when he walked in, interrupting what appeared to be an Intro to Materia video. For once Genesis didn’t appreciate all eyes being on him as the room full of Third Class SOLDIERs looked over at him.Gaining more than a few puzzled looks as Genesis made himself comfortable in the desk across from the instructor’s. This is probably the first time he’s felt awkward making his presence known, quite familiar with being the center of attention. Despite this, he wasn’t going to hide in the back, Genesis having always been the type to sit at the front of any and every class he attends. Looking around the room and meeting everyone’s gaze with a disapproving scowl, prompting everyone to quickly refocus on the video. 

Leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed with a huff, legs spread apart wide enough to call it a whorish display. Quietly regarding the instructor at her position in front of the projector screen, fully expecting her to continue teaching. An eyebrow raised in question as she stared back at him with an excited look on her face.

“Is there something you need?” 

Offering a brief apology before explaining that she had a discussion with Director Lazard and Tseng while they added Genesis into the training program. Inquiring if he could assist in the training of new recruits with materia handling along with a Materia Fusion training starting tomorrow. His level of experience, expertise along with his rank and accomplishments being the source of her request. Deciding to mention the lack of inclusion on making decisions on his behalf the moment he saw either one of them.

An odd proposition considering he was placed here partially due to the mishandling of materia. Though, it would be a bit of an upgrade from being a student. In his mind taking it as a leadership role. The idea of teaching helped heal a bit of Genesis’ currently bruised ego. Giving a few visual presentations in the near future didn’t sound like a horrible plan, “Sure, I suppose I wouldn’t mind while I’m around.” What would be the harm in giving a helping hand? Besides the ancient training video they were watching hadn’t changed from the year he became a third class. It was unbelievable they hadn’t updated a single thing to progress the teachings of their soldiers on how to use something as vital as materia. Maybe that’s why SOLDIERs like the Fair boy were becoming a little more common. They didn’t even bother to share new information with their educators, how could they expect the next coming wave of SOLDIER to be of any use.

The materia instructor was clearly overly excited about this opportunity. Whether it was out of genuine delight for teaching the arts of materia or if it was the way she was openly fawning over Genesis in front of everyone had yet to be determined. Resuming her current lesson plan after thanking him profusely, occasionally receiving input or a correction in terminology from Genesis. He truly didn’t mean to offend the instructor. Frankly, she appeared to be trying her hardest. There was no getting around the simple fact that the information was from an old program. It taught the basics at least. 

Lingering around to discuss his role in teaching the class to the instructor. Genesis wasn’t one to deny such a gorgeous individual of his attention, considering she was clearly seeking it out. Easily standing over the short blonde woman, her straight light blonde hair framing her face and falling well past her shoulders. Light blue eyes admiring his features as he approached her desk. Her anticipation was clear as day as Genesis stood in front of her desk with a mischievous smirk tugging at his lips. ‘I could have a bit of fun with this.’ 

“I apologize for being so rude. I don’t believe I caught your name, love.” Genesis’ flirtatious smile comes off as inviting as he grins a bit more, showing off his perfect white teeth as she blushes under his steady eye contact. Her eyes darted down shyly at his question. 

“Erva,” she timidly responds, her voice now a far contrast from the confidence displayed during her lesson. 

‘A beautiful name for a beautiful woman.’ His eyes trailing along her soft features, round face and big eyes partially hidden behind bangs. Genesis wasn’t looking for anything remotely serious but there was no harm in a bit of flirting. Perhaps he could bring her home for a night if her personality appealed to him as well, so far she seemed more than sweet enough. “Well Erva, I’m honored to assist you as long as I remain in your presence. I was thinking I could bring some training material of my own. I’m sure I have more than enough information to provide, it would make for a better guide than the standard Shinra issued tutorial.” 

Erva, doing her best to contain her excitement at the thought of the, Genesis Rhapsodos, creating a lesson plan that would improve the knowledge of those to come. Dually this would further her own learning, being given an opportunity to delve a bit deeper into such an important subject. With a starry eye gaze she nods her head, her enthusiasm coming off as endearing to Genesis. “Of course, if there’s anything I can help you with, please, don’t hesitate to let me know.” 

She couldn’t believe the words that were coming out of Genesis' mouth when he mentioned he was “honored” to teach alongside her. Erva nearly had a hard time understanding Genesis would see this as a positive thing, thinking he would have to be heavily coaxed into putting in that kind of time and effort. 

Extending a gloved hand to Erva, a sense of bliss overcame him as she daintily took his hand in her own. Her features reddened deeply as he shook her hand, still not missing a moment of eye contact. Thanking Erva for having him attend her class before exiting the small classroom. 

“Genesis!” 

Turning his head to acknowledge whoever would be so rude they would dare shout at him in such a way, or at all for that matter. Genesis’ eyes rolling as he sees the source of the unnecessary noises bounding towards him. “Fair.” this wasn’t the same warm aura he had a few seconds prior upon spotting Zack. He didn’t dislike the Third Class, in fact he had grown fond of Zack and his puppy-like ways. Even going out of his way to teach Zack a few tricks from time to time. Typically things Angeal didn’t approve of Zack being shown quite yet. There was a reason it took nearly a year for anyone to let Zack within 20 feet of the materia room without use of the buddy system. Kunsel often the one to supervise Zack on his way through the portion of the building.

Zack was practically shaking with energy, bouncing from one foot to the other. His expression of constant excitement still plastered all over his face. “Angeal has been looking for you everywhere man. Somethin’ about you leaving the other day and you haven’t spoke to em since. What’d he do to you?” Zack didn’t actually think Angeal had done anything wrong and if he did that would certainly come as a surprise. Yet, never the type to point the blame on anyone, also being a bit curious on the matter as a rumor had been going around Shinra that Genesis was taken off duty. He had no information on his current situation and needed to pry a bit.

“Nobody has done anything to me, Zack,” it felt like an absolute lie to say. It had nothing to do with Angeal anyway, Genesis had no ill emotions held to either of the First Class SOLDIERS. “I’ve been busy with a new assignment.” 

“Oh really? I heard you were relieved of your duties. Anyways, gotta get going, training and all of that. Later!” 

Watching Zack’s retreating form for a brief moment, Genesis’ brow furrowing in concern at his words. ‘How would Zack, of all people, know that.’ It didn’t bother Genesis too terribly, after all, he was on assignment. He was working under the Turks for a while, that was all. To think this would even turn into a rumor was outrageous. Already having in mind to pay Angeal and Sephiroth a visit, making Genesis’ need to do so double down as he immediately heads towards their shared office. 

Borderline power walking to their office once he left the elevator. The door flew open, hinges creaking in protest as Genesis burst through the door. The occupants momentarily stunned as the tension in the air thickened as Genesis slammed the door behind him. 

“Who told Fair I’ve been relieved of my SOLDIER duties? I don’t recall it being any of his business.” 

The initial shock quickly wore off as Genesis speaks, replaced with annoyance on Angeal’s part. The reaction earned a smirk from Sephiroth, he hadn’t communicated with Genesis since the day he pushed his buttons at the elevator. He barely did anything to tip Genesis off in his eyes, teasing in the same manner their banter usually consists of.  

“How would we know? You haven’t talked to us since you got back from your mission.” Sephiroth’s voice rang out as he set his pen down. Giving Genesis a look of confusion, his smirk disappearing at his accusation. Genesis could see right through his deception, not being fooled by Sephiroth’s words in the slightest.

Angeal huffs, exchanging a knowing look with Sephiroth, their expressions suggesting they knew more than they were letting on. The subject on hand wasn’t something that should have been a big deal. They knew Genesis wouldn’t be happy to hear he was the topic of the latest Shirna gossip. It was inevitable as other SOLDIER members talked amongst themselves as they saw Genesis was removed from several upcoming missions.

Assuming Genesis heard a version of the story that had been twisted in order for it to seem like something worse than the reality of it all, Angeal attempts to smooth over Genesis’ anger before he went off the deep end over something so trivial. 

“We didn’t hear any details, we heard you were being taken off of any assignments for the foreseeable future. We’ve also been informed by Lazard that we aren’t to attempt to utilize you for SOLDIER roles as you work under Tseng until further notice,” Angeal explained in hopes that it would disincline his red haired companion from making much of a ruckus about such a petty thing. “I was hoping you would be in the mood to finally tell us what’s been going on.” 

“It’s kind of not fair to leave us in the dark like this. You would expect an explanation from us, no?” Sephiroth was right, Genesis would fully have wanted to know every single second leading up to now, fully expecting the only thing to stop them from talking about work have been confidentiality clauses. Even that was a big maybe. 

“I-” picking his words wisely as all three of them know the likeness of any conversation held in the building are more than likely recorded. Especially in more private locations through the building such as the offices. Genesis expression displaying annoyance once he realized he couldn’t freely vent. “Are you going to lunch at the typical time?” 

“Yes, same place as well.” Sephiroth replied knowingly. Cogs turning in his head as worry takes over, concerned as to what the future of Genesis may entail. He didn’t let it show physically, leaning back in his chair comfortably as he looked Genesis over from head to toe. Seeing that he appeared physically fine at least pacifying some of his concerns. 

“I’ll meet you there.”

Sephiroth and Angeal patiently waited at the booth in the back of the small diner. From the looks of the place one wouldn’t think that any of the Firsts would dare stop there. While in nice, clean condition the interior was extremely outdated. Still clinging onto the vintage style that’s probably been around since the day it was built. Six red booth seats lining the left side of the small business. A wooden bar with stools lined up along the counter situated along the right side of the establishment. 

“Always the last one to show up,” Angeal shifted in his seat as Genesis sat in the booth beside him. “Is everything okay?” 

“Yeah,” Genesis wasn’t sure where to begin. He damn near had not a single clue what was going on. While he did receive a lot of information on his new assignment, he couldn’t help but feel left in the dark. He would’ve cracked a small grin at Angeal’s jab at his punctuality if it wasn’t for him genuinely making an attempt to be there in time. “I had to get rid of that stupid phone Tseng gave me. He was blunt about tracking my location, no doubt he’s sitting at his desk listening to me all day.” 

“This is already sounding worse than what I was expecting,” Sephiroth said, his eyebrow raising, lips parted as he was following up with another statement. Leaning over the table, forearms supporting his current posture, speaking in more of a hushed whisper than he previously had been. “Nod if you need help.”

“Yes!” Genesis announced nodding his head vigorously, still trying to maintain a low tone but he couldn’t help the stress bubbling out of his soul. Earning a puzzled look from both of his companions, anticipating the rant they knew was to come. 

“I have no idea what the fuck is going on. All I know is I’m supposed to follow some bitch around for Goddess knows how long and possibly be their friend so I can get information from them.” Genesis props his elbow on the table, thumb placed on his temple as he rubs his forehead in a display of distress. “It’s like I’m their newly appointed probation officer.”

“So it’s an espionage mission?” Sephiroth asks, feeling suspicious of the task the Turks and Lazard set Genesis to handle. 

Angeal interjecting the conversation this time, “They’ve always been notorious for telling us little to nothing whenever they ask for help. I can’t say I’m surprised they’ve got you going in blind.” 

Genesis couldn’t say he was going into this without knowing a single thing. He’s found out a lot about you, rather everything Tseng wanted him to know about you. Explaining to Angeal and Sephiroth what occurred during the discussion between Lazard and Genesis that led to this point. Giving an in depth explanation of your background and what you’re currently known ties to the increase in crime on the top plate. The only thing missing was the oversized file Genesis received for this. Making sure he doesn’t skip details about the requests Tseng has made as far as keeping tabs on you The mentions of using Genesis to assist in pinpointing a drug dealer leaving the other two stumped. “Can you imagine my disbelief when I learned I see this person more or less everyday in traffic, let alone living within walking distance of me?!” 

Quieting himself down when the waiter behind the bar eyed him curiously as he wiped down the counter. He was quite adjusted to these three coming in for lunch or a general meetup. Taking the silent cue from Angeal’s lingering eye contact, the waiter enters the back room in order to give the three more privacy.

Crossing his arms while making an attempt to relax in his seat, Genesis’ back pressed against the soft red cushion of the backrest. “Tseng says, when they move, I move. I've done nothing to deserve this.” The sight was teetering on childlike behavior. Letting out an exasperated huff as he slumped in his seat.

Genesis could've had it worse in both Sephiroth and Angeal’s perspective. It wasn't the greatest thing in the world, but Genesis didn't have to do anything besides solely focus on this one assignment and a bit of training? The downsides being he would constantly be on call alongside with the inability to leave Midgar on a whim. But how often would Genesis really be leaving anyway. Sephiroth’s statement wasn't meant to be a jab at Genesis’ situation, rather an astute observation. 

“Genesis, you destroyed a historical landmark.” 

“And blatantly ignored orders…again.” Angeal quipped in, immediately earning a glare from Genesis.

“Who’s side are you on?” Genesis sounded insulted at being called out by Angeal’s additional comment.  

Angeal didn’t get to entertain a response, the words dying on the tip of his tongue as he saw the bright red hair of Reno in his peripheral vision. He’s not even sure he heard the usual chime announcing when a new patron has entered. It only took a few seconds before Reno made his way through the small space, his destination clearly being where they’re seated. 

Rude followed through the door a split second after, taking his position beside Reno and nodding at the three as a silent greeting. 

Pulling out the PHS from the inner pocket of Rude’s suit, handing it back to Genesis while giving what everyone could only assume was a disapproving look behind his shades. “I’m sure you’ve been informed how important it is to keep this with you at all times.” 

If being traced down by these two wasn’t bad enough, the moment Reno grabbed him by the shoulders to physically pull him out of his seat by the pauldrons was worse. Hearing Sephiroth’s light chuckle at being handled in such a way by Reno sent Genesis further down a path of anger, pushing against the eccentric Turk as he was brought to his feet. 

Embarrassing was certainly the word for it. Taken off guard by just how strong Reno was, his grip unrelenting in Genesis squirmish. Giving him a light push forward down the aisle as Reno let him go, following behind Genesis with Rude in tow. “We don't like having things added to our to-do list. No hiding next time.” 

“Do not touch me again,” Genesis’ voice carried an unspoken threat, as he was ushered out of the door, not even being allowed the time to say anything else to Sephiroth and Angeal. 

“We have to get you ready, you have a big night ahead of you.” Reno states, a hint of mischievous coating his tone. 

Gears were turning in Genesis' mind as he made an attempt to set his anger to the side and figure out what the next turn of events could possibly hold for him. “What do you mean by that?” 

Genesis' eyes narrow at the statement, stopping in his tracks before they could urge him further along. 

Reno, who couldn’t seem to keep his hands to himself, once again grabbed Genesis by the shoulders. His grip was more gentle than the first time, but maintaining a closeness that made Genesis' skin crawl as he was urged in the direction of their car. 

If the list of reasons to rip Reno’s hands off wasn’t already long enough in Genesis’ mind, taking notice of the vehicle Genesis purposefully left at Shinra extended his reasoning by miles. Parked horribly and with the convertible roofing tucked away giving away that clearly someone had been enjoying themselves. 

“You stole my fucking car?” Genesis was damn near speechless for once in his life, firmly believing there was no possible way this could have been allowed. The look on his face screamed ‘let me speak to your supervisor.’ 

Rude finally decided to speak up while he rounds Genesis’ car, “You gave us a reason to, by hiding your PHS, not in the smartest place either.” Getting in the passenger seat, Reno following and to the utmost displeasure Genesis could imagine, despite the list of ongoing annoyances, Reno jumps over the door and into the backseat, gesturing for Genesis to be their driver. 

“Let’s go! You have work to tend to.” 

**Reader POV**

By the time you finally woke out of your slumber the sun had gone down, the living room now cloaked in darkness, the only light coming through your window provided by the patio lighting and soft moonlight. 

Sitting up, rubbing your eyes groggily as you try to regain your bearings. ‘My only off day and I slept it away?’ The rest was needed, but there were things you needed to do. Not conventionally fun for you, but now it was too late to turn down the invitation to a party you’ve already accepted. 

The scene was far from your type, never one for big social gatherings but at times being guilt tripped into going or calling yourself doing a favor for a friend by showing up. This party was no different, the knowledge that it would be held on the top plate made the circumstances slightly better. Still, there was no doubting it would be in one of the shadiest bars they could find. 

Keeping in mind that the “party” is supposed to be a small gathering. ‘Not how that usually works.’ You couldn’t push the reality of your upcoming night to the back of your mind. These gatherings always ended in some sort of rowdy fashion. 

Lazily climbing off of the couch and making your way to the bedroom with the half hearted intent of getting dressed, piecing together an outfit that you found to be suitable enough for a night full of unexpected turns. Looking over the outfit choice you nod your head in agreement at your own lovely taste. ‘Yeah, I could get hoes in this or fight them. Choice is theirs.’ 

Passing through the bedroom, you enter the connected master bathroom. Setting the shower to the perfect temperature, hopping in and taking your sweet time to get ready in the hopes of arriving late. 

This gathering was just as insufferable as all of the others. Finding yourself nursing a drink by yourself at a table tucked away from the night’s rowdy events. You weren’t that insociable that you wouldn’t greet your friends, providing them with the bare minimum amount of conversation you could before quickly taking time to unwind away from everyone else. A few drinks would be sure to get you in a friendlier mood, at least that was the hope. 

As you tilt your head up to finish off your first drink your eyes couldn’t miss the unmistakably good looking man who happened to catch your attention. Not an occurrence you came across frequently, mainly lacking interest when it came to messing around with people in general. However you could appreciate eye candy when you spot it. He seemed a bit overdressed for a bar like this. Despite it being on the top plate it was far from the nicest bar around.

Clad in a fairly expensive looking black suit, red dress shirt adding on to his already sharp looks.  Reddish brown hair stood out to you, tall and perfect ocean blue eyes to top off a very well put together…‘SOLDIER’ 

The mako glow of his eyes becomes more prominent as you examine the mystery man. Seeing him gave you a deja vu like sensation, you were unable to put your finger on it, but you were positive you’ve seen this guy before. As you were lost in thought checking out a total stranger, you didn’t have much time to tear your eyes away as he met your gaze.  

Now that he’s caught you red-handed it seems as though you’ve acquired his attention. Mako blue eyes grazing over your features making you squirm in your seat. ‘Fuck, now he’s coming over here’

Monday 10/5/21 - Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong; A Brief Guide

In a previous post, I had a small rant about how mainstream media is really bad at accurately representing dinosaurs. Today I've decided that I'll help educate the uninformed of what exactly I mean by that.

Many issues with representing dinosaurs come from using outdated scientific knowledge. Sure, scientists believed dinosaurs really looked like this at some point, but some of these ideas are hundred of years out of date. Other inaccuracies come from one outlet presenting an idea as fact, and then many other media forms running with the idea without fact-checking.

Here's a brief guide of some of the most common mistakes/inaccuracies made when representing dinosaurs in the mainstream.

Dragging Tail/Kangaroo Posture

Thankfully this is an issue that is seen less often these days, but the movie The Good Dinosaur recently brought up that pain again.

Long Necked Dinosaurs in particular often suffer this inaccuracy. Dinosaurs in life would've had a very horizontal body plan, and their tails were mostly stiff rods held almost parallel to the ground, only the end was flexible.

The other way posture was done wrong, also much less common these days, is when bipedal therapods were reconstructed upright, almost in a kangaroo pose. It is more accurate to pose them horizontal too. Picture a cassowary or ostrich with arms.

Hand Pronation

One of the most common issues that even otherwise perfectly accurate dinosaur reconstructions get is hand pronation. To clarify terminology here, pronation is the position of your hands when your rotate your wrist to have your palm facing the ground. Why is this relevant? Because dinosaurs could not do this.

It is a problem deeply ingrained in everyday culture now. Ask someone to do a T-Rex impression and they'll bend their wrist inwards and face their palms toward the ground, like a bunny rabbit.

What could dinosaurs do then? On the above image, a bipedal dinosaur's natural hand position would be in the neutral pose, as if they were preparing to clap them together.

Many predatory bipedal dinosaurs used their forelimbs as grasping appendages, so having them in a position where they could actually meet is important. To rotate the wrist, they would need to rotate the whole arm at the shoulder, and this is how modern dinosaurs (birds) flap their wings.

Columnar "Elephant" Feet

An issue with trying to represent extinct animals with few extant lineages is people will use totally unrelated analogues to reconstruct body plans. An inaccuracy not often thought of is the legs and feet of larger quadruped dinosaurs. Artists will often fall into the trap of depicting larger sauropods, ceratopsians, and nodosaurs with thick column legs and tiny toes, like you'd see in an elephant or rhinoceros. But dinosaurs were reptiles and even the thicker heavy-set ones still had very reptilian feet.

Integument/Feathers

One of the most hotly debated questions of the past few decades is the amount of feather covering dinosaurs had. It is now well understood that the presence of even simple feathers is ancestral to nearly all dinosaur groups, but the degree to which integument covered an animal varied between groups. Many dinosaurs in media are reconstructed with naked scales and this is mostly wrong.

In my opinion, the bigger sin is blotching a dinosaur's pelt with small quills here and there, and proper feathering on just the head and tail, maybe arms. Its a very ugly look.

The Good Dinosaur, "Velociraptor"

In most cases, paleoart will tell you that the meat-eating dinosaurs most closely related to birds were definitely covered in a full coat of feathers. And trust me, they look just as cool as the classic scaly Velociraptor.

But feather-haters will often ridicule this take, and push feathering to the extreme, in an attempt to make the idea of feathered dinosaurs a joke. The truth of the matter however, is that the feathering of dinosaurs is much like fur of mammals.

Feathers are foremost, a thermoregulation tool, and much like how elephants are too large to need a thick fur coat, larger dinosaurs like Sauropods, and even Tyrannosaurus, would likely have been mostly naked. Cold adapted relatives of larger species may have had thicker coats, like T-Rex's tundra cousin, Yutyrannus, but for the most part, larger species, or species not as closely related to birds, would've had minimal feathering, but still fuzz of some sort.

I hate the stupid budgerigar T.Rex and it makes me angry every time I see it on my feed.

What we know about dinosaurs changes every time we discover a new specimen, but the rules I've presented in this article are relatively static. If you want to reconstruct Spinosaurus, just know what we currently know as fact will likely change in the next two years or less.

And so this is end of my (relatively) short guide on inaccuracies of dinosaur reconstructions. To end this blogpost, I will reccomend the Youtube Channel that inspired the name for this blog, Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong, where Steven Belletini, a palaeontologist and digital artist, uses toys of dinosaurs sent to him by fans as a starting point to drive conversation about what even is an accurate dinosaur reconstruction.

The morning that Harry wakes up and you're not sleeping peacefully beside him is the worst of his entire life.

He can sense that you're not there. The air still circulates whiffs of your caramel shampoo and the breeze of your automatic fan that you always insist on leaving on all night still whirs leisurely and tickles the back of his neck.

Regardless, the room is vacant. He doesn't have to open his eyes to know that much.

For now, he remains entirely numb. Immune to the flooding sobs and intolerable agony and festering anger, he supposes it's in his best interest to stay like that for a while.

For a few days, at least. Until he can fully process your absence. He's not certain how long it takes the average person to wholly recognise an entire chunk of themselves missing, but he figures he's already suffered enough.

Surely, the universe isn't that cruel.

Your love is delightedly grand, and with its sudden unavailability, he feels so dejectedly vague.

He's clearly not perceiving time correctly, perhaps it's his distant concentration or maybe even his body's method of rejecting life and the wretched torture of its innate malice.

A few times, he's experienced sleep paralysis. The first, horrifying occasion is long-forgotten, when he was seven or so - it happened only after staying up until one in the morning to watch a horror movie that he'd been specifically warned not to watch and a towering vacuum of danger stood solid as stone at the end of his bed.

If it weren't for his fingertips subconsciously tracing featherlight scribes of your name on his forearm, he might reasonably assume he's haunted with the condition once again.

A clattering of paws on hard floorboards injects a little more reality into his thoughts, and he still can't bear, physically, to turn over and greet the sweet puppy you'd snuck home and surprised him with upon his arrival home from work around a year ago, knowing that his acceptance of a familiarly-shaped void is waiting just inches away.

Eventually, and after another chaotic scramble of claws in need of a cut, Chi is bouncing enthusiastically at his side and attempting an ambitious leap onto the mattress. She fails theatrically, landing in a resounding thud on her back and launching back to her feet, completely unaware of her owner's awaiting grief.

Masking his greatest fears with scooping a palm beneath Chi's belly and hauling her upwards to nestle into his chest, the reposition forces him to lay on his back (she's always detested laying on her side, especially when smothered with adoring cuddles) and, like the coward he truly is, his eyes focus adamantly on a random spot of the pale ceiling. With every minute shuffle, it becomes more and more achingly apparent that you're really not here.

And if everything runs correctly, you'll squirm and giggle graciously at his waking before returning his kiss, to his lips, this time, and he'll suggest applying a little moisturiser, like he always does, and you'll love him like you should.

When his eyelids snap open and his head curves breezily to your claimed side of the bed, he's somewhat unsurprised to confirm that his life truly has transformed to a dreadful bundle of tragedy. In your imposing place, is a neatly-made bed and an envelope.

A single, white envelope, stained by the sweet, flowing cursive that could flow only from your touch.

Chi leaps naturally to the spectacle, sniffing curiously at the letter and nudging it around a little, whilst Harry is so unexplainably pained that he's unable to move. Swallowing thickly, he's not certain word-for-word what lies in the confines of this envelope, but he does know it'll confirm your leaving him, and for some strange reason, he's relieved you left an explanation, at least.

A souvenir of you to hang onto forever, along with the millions of other items and memories of yours in his possession.

Carefully removing it from Chi's vicinity and replacing the object of her attention with a random squeaky toy that he'd discovered burrowed beneath his bed a few nights ago, he traces your exquisite handwriting with his fingertip and reads along with inaudible movements of his mouth; For Harry, mon amour.

In that moment, he realises profoundly that he'll never get to request hearing you say different words in your accent again.

The amount of times he implored relentlessly to hear je t'aime and have it accompanied with an endearing kiss is infinite.

I'm so incredibly sorry that I couldn't handle the pain.

Seeing your face cures any anguish I feel, but not this time.

I really, really tried; I know you did, too. I wanted it to work out, I prayed every day that our suffering would magically end and we could return to our love, I hoped that one day I would wake and cuddle you tightly and describe this awful nightmare I'd had.

Possibly, I may write to you in the future; please, don't try to contact me, it won't work and you know it's for the best. My family and close friends know where I am, where I will be, and they also know not to tell you if you ask.

Chi tugs eagerly on her lead at the sight of the familiar entrance to her home, Harry in tow right behind. Sludgy snow muddies his shoes and soaks the hem of his jeans. His puppy's paws are undoubtedly drenched, too, but her fur is protected valiantly by her favourite jacket. He'd purchased it from a specialist store in France a year prior, and, since surprising her with the present upon his shared return, it'd become her primary option during the winter months.

Retrieving a reasonable pile of letters from his designated section, a rapid flick through displays bills, scams and all of the usual junk he usually receives. He offers his elderly neighbour a polite smile and holds open the door with his knee to construct a clear path for her exit.

He grimaces slightly at the teeth-shaped arc of damp dents into his mail - he hadn't particularly considered the repercussions of carrying it that way - and unclips Chi's lead, allowing her to run rampage through his airy apartment. Absently dropping his keys into its small dish of residence and taking a closer inspection at his post to infiltrate any wrong addresses or scams, he selects an apple from his fruit bowl and steals one firm chunk before noticing something peculiar.

Groomed eyebrows knitting together in confusion, he plucks one particular letter from the bunch and stacks it to the top. Perplexed by the sorely familiar curve of the writing scrawled on the front, his head shakes in denial - you wouldn't have, surely.

Discarding of all other mail on his kitchen counter, he's puzzled beyond belief; you'd left with no verbal warning and a letter that, admittedly, had been the source of several bouts of severe depression and, in spite of its awful affects, read dutifully every single day since your disappearance.

Rashly, he wishes you hadn't changed your phone number and email address shortly before leaving so he could possibly contact you regarding this mystery. However, he knows just as well as you clearly foresaw; his topic of discussion wouldn't be only the letter.

Tearing open the corner cautiously, he's incredibly delicate with checking inside the envelope once open to ensure it contains only his presumed note. Reviewing the front with a scouring gaze of disbelief, it really, truly has come from you.

He can't remember how many times he read each postcard that you'd gifted him with at the very beginning of your relationship. You'd recently made the permanent move from France to England, and, in a new country with limited knowledge of the native language, Harry had unintentionally become your beacon of comfort here.

With his fluent French and English, he was the perfect contender for kindly correcting your terminology and educating you on the essential etiquettes of Britain. Within weeks, however, your sweet smile had changed from an enjoyable sight during your frequent coffee shop meetings to something he craved.

He misses reading your silly, awful puns based around your home country, especially his favourite. A laughably unfunny joke paired with a matching scribble of the two of you; what do french fries do when they meet? They ketchup!

Every day, his thoughts are plagued with ideas of how to write his next letter. Your previous few communications ran smoothly; you seem incredibly apologetic and, as much as he would've gladly ignored the past tense use of 'love' in your most recent letter, he can't help but realise the difference from your first each time he reads it.

He's not certain why his first letter practically poured from his pen and before he knew it, it was sealed, posted and received. This time, however, he can't even construct a way to greet you.

Has distance and time really weakened your connection that much? His favourite childhood Disney movies would be ashamed.

The heartache you've endured together is insufferable, the bitterness remaining fresh and the misery continuing to roll onwards with him, and yet, you're both still alive. Perhaps, he should be a little more thankful.

He's tested out various support groups over the past few months; they appear to help in the moment, but once he returns home to a completely empty house, - aside from Chi - he realises all of his progress to be entirely fake.

How can he realistically recover from his insurmountable loss in solitude?

An apartment which used to breathe vibrant life and excitement for the future, diminished to nothing but silence.

He might as well have lost his house, too. Every second he spends there, surrounded by reminders of his grief, is draining. Of course, if he were a millionaire, he would've discovered a lovely, one bed flat with wide, open floors and windows. If he were a millionaire, though, maybe none of this agony would've ever happened.

He could’ve fixed it.

Regardless, he didn't, and now he returns home every single day, monotonous and finding solace only in rereading your letters and running through his local park with Chi, no matter the weather.

Sometimes, he hears the faint echo of your melodious voice ringing in his ear; mon doux bébé. For a moment, he believes you may be talking to him, but with a resounding giggle of contentment, you never were.

Within a month, he lost both of his sweet baby girls, and the pain is simply too much to comprehend.

Firstly, I apologize for my late reply. This letter was, for some reason, incredibly difficult to write.

You hurt me never. Life hurt me, and it hurt you, too, and I'm sorry it's so cruel.

Life is shit. I thought I had accepted that. I never imagined how evil it could be.

I have heard my fair share of sympathy. At first, I felt bitter. They didn't understand what I had suffered, they didn't understand the pain I felt. With time, I realised that, sometimes, sorry is all you need to hear to feel a little better. To feel like you're managing life, at least.

I wish I could believe I deserve it, but I truly don't.

My mistakes seem perpetual. I'm constantly remembering new ones. Things I could've noticed faster, signs that I should've recognised. Yours are nothing. You made no mistakes, mon amour, please believe that. As much as fate has been my least favourite higher power for the past year, I agree about welcoming our own.

I would make a list of my personal favourites of your appearance, but I'd be here all day, and I'm meeting with a friend in an hour (your second question - check).

It wasn't fair for either of us to run. I think it's turned out for the best, however.

The second your letter arrives and is read fully three times over, Harry's scrambling to collect his fancy paper and ink pen, thousands of ideas about how to reply brimming in his head.

Pen to paper, however, his mind is entirely blank.

You're inching closer to addressing the subject of your pain, and so is he. So far, the only discussions you've had regarding that difficult topic have ended either in awful arguments or uncontrollable, endless crying and they all occurred before your disappearance.

Since then, you've had ten months and seventeen days shared to mature from and process the situation. Perhaps, if you were to have a conversation about it now, it would be beneficial.

Harry is aware of the solution to his strange writer's block and urges to attempt to fix your hurt, but he's not quite sure if he's ready. Physically forcing himself up from his cluttered desk, he tries not to think of the main event when changing his sloppy t-shirt and joggers to jeans and a jumper; it's February, so the wind is still well and alive but, luckily for Chi and the duration of her walks, the temperatures are beginning to rise.

His destination is barely a thirty minute leisurely stroll through the city away, and he feels shameful to admit that this is his first visit in ten and a half months. Several times, he's gathered his courage to stand on the pavement, surveying the vast area but never making it closer than the protective fences.

This time, though, he's determined to make it. And he will, with je t'aime's and sweet giggles bubbling in his ears.

I feel as if I should address the end of your letter first, because I certainly wasn't expecting it. I cried a lot. I'm still crying as I write this.

It feels nice to feel.

I've been so numb to it all. I know I should sob every day, think of her every single second. I don't. That may make me an awful person, but I always preferred not to lie. Especially to you. I don't think the gravity has quite hit me yet.

Back to the normal, top to bottom of your letter.

My family is a gift. My parents, you and Meline, specifically. I've never admired anyone more.

Since that day, Harry's visited Meline every Sunday without fail - it's only been three weeks, but going in the first place was an unimaginable step.

He even combined Chi's walk with the most recent, and each time, entering, staying at and emerging from the cemetery becomes easier.

The first time, he paced through the gates several times before building the bravery to even step inside without running back. His flight or fight instinct had been touchy the whole time, bias towards flight the entire time.

He just wanted to be as far away from the source of his pain as possible.

At the same time, he just wanted his daughter back. Alive and healthy.

Once he'd settled, laid on the ground like a madman next to her grave, he never wanted to leave her again. He even brought her flowers and a little teddy bear from a shop he'd passed on his hurried journey there.

It was well and truly dark by the time he even considered returning home, because he'd rather be with his sweet baby than alone at home.

Now, Chi sniffs inquisitively around at the bundles of flowers placed on surrounding graves whilst Harry converses with his dead child's grave like she was as animated and eager as he remembered.

It's a little questionable for his sanity, but extremely helpful for his own mental health. And he's trying to fix them both.

He just wishes so much that he'd pushed for more tests in the hospital. If he could, he'd reject their diagnosis and prescription of heart medication and an inhaler for when her asthma flared up.

They claimed she had a weakened respiratory system and, subsequently, her heart didn't deal well under stress, mostly due to her premature birth.

They were correct.

However, they were entirely wrong when they sent you all home with a tub of medicine and advice to lower any potential stressors around her.

Harry remembers scoffing to himself; she was one, what could possibly be stressing her that much?

Apparently, a lot of things.

I understand completely about any emotion feeling refreshing. For a while, I felt immune to it. I cried and I got angry, but nothing ever really set in.

honestly? If I was in your position I’d diplomaticly tell her that ~I~ am the president and not her. From the sound of it she’s not an easy person to debate with but I’d try to kill her with kindness and be all about inclusivity and being open to all different kinds of non-cishet communities. That you explicitly also want to address the queer community and that it’s not queer people’s fault when cishets get our terminology wrong. Also that there is nothing wrong about cishets using the word “queer” in a positive way. Not every cishet person says the word “queer” as an insult because guess what? Reclamation works.

If she has such a problem with a GSA that explicitly includes queer people and queer things and uses the word ~queer~ then maybe she’s not the right person for the job because the GSA club that you have been voted president of stands for inclusivity and open-mindedness goddamnit! She can either back you up with this (and accept that you have the last word) or step down/run for president herself next time.

I honestly don’t know what else to tell you and I am feeling rather angry with this person so I’m probably not much of a help. Maybe this is a debate that needs to be had with the entire club and if you want to go all political you could then put it to a vote. But that’s risky and might break the whole GSA apart.

So I’d say try talking to her first and try to find some way of saying that you do hear her concern (cue customer service smile) and you are very sorry that she takes personal issue with “queer” and your use of the word on the website but you won’t take it down because you explicitly want to address the queer community as well since you and many others are part of that. If she is worried about that leading to misconceptions then cishets are welcome to educate themselves about the meaning of that word and how it relates to “LGBTQIA+” through the services that your GSA provides. I'm not sure why I haven't posted anything here yet since this world craziness started... Normally I would have bombarded it with posts everyday and such.

This social distancing is my life style, so I've been doing pretty okay better than most unfortunatly. Thank you Tumblr, and hours of scrolling for preparing me for this moment in time!

I've been filling my days with video games, reading and trying to force myself out for runs. I've helped my mum clean the house. (She has a bad back and would end up killing myself if I didn't go over every once in a while to help out)

I've also recently shaved my head! Finally, I've wanted to do it for years to see what I'd look like and to get rid of the years of dying it and hairstyle frustrations. I like it, but some days I get self conscious and don't end up going for runs. But maybe I'm just using that as an excuse and I'm just hella laazy!

It's a learning curve for sure, I've been reading a lot of philosophy lately and listening to the philosophize this podcast for the past year now so I've been trying to work on myself, thinking more and trying to meditate and gain self confidence and just be able to help myself help others. If that makes sense? Anyway, cutting off all your hair really helps practice Stoicism. There's no instant regrowth, and my hair takes longer to grow out than normal people.

I do love myself, a hella a lot more than I used to. There's nothing I wouldn't change, and I think that mind set alone has been what gets me out the door more often for runs and wanting to take care of my body and mind!!

I've also been cooking more, to save on money and because I'm not a huge advocate for waste being delivered to my door. I have had breakdowns however, I did it twice, I've ordered breakfast for myself to help me get up earlier and to get better coffee. Because the Maxwell can is not working out for me, and it's so gross, its taking me forever to get through it! I'll still drink it though, because, caffeine! Hello.

Back to cooking more! I've been mostly making mashed potatoes and what nots, but I'll occasionally make a vegan grilled cheese or have vegan hot dogs! I've made some pasta, quinoa and lately before bed I'll get a chia bowl ready to set while I sleep. That's pretty healthy and delicious. I've made terrible pancakes, I accidently got the whole wheat flour rather than the other stuff, soo that wasn't a fun mistake. Alas, no waste, so I have to make it into things!

I also signed up for a sustainable cities online course, lots of reading, but it was on sale. If anything it'll help me plan imaginary cities better in my head and I'll be able to put it on resumes. So level up?

I've re arranged my living room so I can easily switch between laptop and PlayStation without having to get up for any reason! +40 laziness. Aha. Fun.

Cats bombard with with attention and cuddles All. The. Damn. Time. I thought cats were supposed to not care and be independent and stuffs. Not my cats, noo. I wake up pinned, cat by my head, in the curve of my back and on my feet! If I'm laying on my back xews will be on my chest. Like hello! Let me breathe. They follow me to the bathroom, and to the couch! My couch is tiny, and all three of them find a little spot and take up all the space. It's hard to take notes! Anyway. I love them, I love their cuddles I'll never take them for granted and I'll always be like okai in the lap you go! It's nice playing a videogame with your cats stretching their paw onto your paw!. #catmum

Works been telling me the new opening day is July 3rd.. July 3rd two more months of this madness. I'm okay with it though, I'll hopefully finish the online course and get out for more runs! I've signed up the the social distancing run thing, I'm hoping to do a 10k for it!

Our government is all over the place about everything, and its making people crazy! There's lies, uncertainty questions unanswered. There's conspiracies left and right and I don't know which ones to believe. I mean some seem drastic and obviously crazier than others. I'm just not politically educated enough for this. But what if they're true to? I dunno, I've been watching a lot of things and reading stuff of history and stuffs and theirs some people that end up being corrected and proven right when people thought they were insane ? And yea people are just crazy and have their crazy thoughts. I dunno. I just want to have a back seat, and I mean my first and foremost fight is with nature, so my bias towards anything will be on how it affects the future of how we live with nature. If that makes sense? I could go on and on about this part, but this part makes me the most unwary and depressed honestly. I've been crying for days about this and where I stand, I've always been one to stand with the people. But which people? My brain hurts. I'm a sheep guys. I'm a sheep. I'm just a very lost sheeple.

People that I know from South Africa sent me a message saying that they were starving and asked for help, I wasn't sure what to do. I sent them some money, but I don't have much to give. I hope it'll be enough to get them by for a couple of days! I haven't heard from her since? So I don't know?

Anyways.

I haven't heard from my possibly future school yet about the upcoming semester and what to do, am I still able to go? Are they going to be opened by end of August? Will I be allowed to travel to another province? I'll wait till the end of May to send an email and find out! I am not doing that course online, I have a hard enough time motivating myself to do this current baby course. And I really want to do well in this course if I get there! It was a whole thing guys.

Before all this started I had started therapy, volunteering for the theater and taekwando. I'm really sad that i haven't been able to take part in these new hobbies. I had the chance to volunteer for the opening of the wizard of oz production before all the other shows at the theater got cancelled. It was amazing. Maybe I'll be able to do something similar while I'm in Vancouver. I only had one beginning trial class for taekwando, I'm slightly sad because by the time it reopens I'll probably be heading to Vancouver and won't be able to attend.

Cancelling therapy was the hardest, I had just started after years and years of being afraid to go for many reasons. I only got two sessions in before having to stop due to being laid off. But it's okay, because I still have my writing as my therapy. I end up asking the questions to myself while writing. I've read a lot of psychology, well not a lot, but a good amount. But the extra help and guidance was nice. I learned new terminology that applied to myself and my childhood and a couple other things that I'm able to sit back and acknowledge during meditations.

It was like I was finally getting out more, trying to fix myself, trying to go meet new friends and say hello to the world. And then the world was like nah. Back to social distancing! Kay, thaanks.

The last three or so days I've felt a little pull back into myself and I couldn't motivate myself lately. I think a large part of it was due to an argument I had with my mother, and the political drama that's been going on lately.

Wanting to go on runs or outside to enjoy the chilly sunny day has been a struggle, when it hasn't been I'm a while. I was playing ESO with a couple friends when all of a sudden all I wanted to do was just lay on the couch, curl up with my eyes closed and just bleh. I listening to the ESO music for a while and remembered that I haven't wrote anything in a long while on Tumblr or anywhere. So here I am, returning to my old therapy just writing my garbage thoughts to replace them with happier more motivated ones. It's sort of working, we'll see how the day goes.

All in all, I'm okay, my family is okay. And only time will tell what craziness is next for this year!

After watching the interview Ameer Abdul I was first very educated on an issue I didn't even know about, so I really enjoyed being informed and taught something new. During his discussion about Period I was shocked to learn this is happening in our backyard and I am glad there is now a group of people who can help with this. Initially he spoke about what he thought he would be doing or planned to do, and hearing how he just began this journey because of an initial article a woman wrote really interested me. I have an idea of what I want to do but who knows where I could end up and be passionate or called to do. That was really inspiring to me. 

He continued on about how when new people begin to talk on the subject they might use the wrong terminology by mistake. His advice is to approach everyone with an open heart and mind and to do what you can to educate. I really enjoyed how he described that and I wish more people reacted the same way. Respectfully educating and then using the correct terms the next time. The only issue is, not everyone is like that, but being that first step to educate shows that you tried and I want to start to live more like that. I generally don’t judge right away but just approaching a new topic or subject how he does is really enticing. I think in the future when I work wherever I end up, I will try to have the lens he does. Also, giving things that might be traditionally taboo or things that don’t fit social norms a chance because maybe it will be what I end up feeling really called to be a part of.

The Magic Pill, Aka Fat Burners

This reveals every time Summer comes around, an event or even a big vacation, for that reason Vegas, Miami, Cabo, beaches, pool parties (Rehab, Wet Republic), and then some, make us want to be in the best shape of our everyday life. Anyone that sits here and says they don't want to look good those above I just mentioned, you're only kidding yourself. A lot of us separate our asses to get in shape for the above, whether it's through strict a diet, cardio, and intense training regimens. Some might not be as overwhelming as others and some might just do enough to get by with their bikinis and board shorts, whatever floats your boat. Next there's those who completely panic with a few weeks left to get in shape and realize, "if I only just started cleaning up my diet every thirty days ago or started doing cardio earlier. " These folks are inclined to want a magic pill to get them their desired results in a small amount of some with the tiniest amount of effort. So what do these folks do? Other than an astronomical amount of cardio & dramatic low carbing (cut out all sources of carbohydrates from their diets), they turn to fat burners! Yes, the hypothetical magic pill... Fat burners. In this article I will explain just what body fat is, types of body fat, how body fat is burned, precisely what fat burners are and do, and if there are any type of efficacy to them. Prior to when you continue, hang in there with me on some of the technical terminology plus science, I'm only trying to educate you and bring you the best information and facts possible. Muchas gracias! What in the world is a fat burner and what do these cards do? These days, fat burners are a generic term for products that will hopefully help you re-compose your body composition, more muscle, less fat. What is extra fat? Most people think they know about body fat; I'm here to tell an individual that isn't the case and please don't insinuate that I know it all also, because nobody will never know it all in this field. I just want to guarantee we are all on the same page here. The more technical term for unwanted fat is adipose tissue, with individual cells being called adipocytes ('adipo' = fat; 'cyte' = cell). WAT in humans is composed primarily (anywhere from 60 to 95%) of lipid. By lipid I mean stored triglycerides (stored fatty acids in fat cells) (2)

Types of body fat truly. The human body has at least 4 different depots of stored fat, however I'll actually make out a fifth that isn't really used in homework. The first type of fat is 'essential body fat, ' this appertains to the fat around your organs (where it serves an important sofa role). For the most part, we don't need to worry about essential fat because a essential body fat and you can't lose it and, even if you could, anyone wouldn't want to because you'd be dead. The second type of fat will be 'brown adipose tissue' (BAT), the main role of BAT is usually energy utilization and heat production. BAT is different from WAT because WAT is more of a storage type of fat. The third variety of fat is 'visceral fat, ' this type of fat is found all over your internal organs and can be thought of as gut fat. But , it's not the actual fat you see on the top of your stomach; it's actually underneath your mid-section surrounding your organs. Obese people carry a lot of visceral fats which leads to many health problems. The fourth type of fat is 'subcutaneous unwanted fat, ' this is the type of fat that most folks are focused on getting rid of because of the fat is found underneath their skin (i. e., abdominal space, hips, thighs). The fifth type of fat is 'stubborn weight, ' which is the type of fat that you nearly try everything during the book to get it off but just simply cant and this is because physiological reasons that I'm not going to get into in this article (3). Now how do I burn off this body fat? In physiological terms, using is better described as "oxidizing". This simply means that the body reacts quite a few fuel with oxygen, ultimately producing ATP (available energy pertaining to cells in the body to be oxidized) (4). There's two parts that will burning body fat. The first part to burning fat is we must keep in mind that all of our organs in our body store fat. We store excessive fat in muscle, heart, lungs, intestines, but the fat that makes united states look fat, that's underneath our skin is called 'subcutaneous adipose flesh. ' To burn fat from adipose tissue, we first should liberate (free) it. It's liberated by freed up fats (triglycerides) that are inside fat cells and then dumped into the body. The second part to burning fat is after the fatty acids are thrown out into the blood stream (lipolysis), they are delivered to different tissues like the center, liver, and muscles where they are being oxidized (burned). Imagine putting gas in your car and the fuel being burned. Therefore , those are the 2 parts to burning fat. Enough with all the specialised stuff and science, do fat burners work? When we talk about weight loss we're saying we want all this adipose tissue shifted into electricity. Fat burners don't necessarily do this. Fat burners are not going to make you lean; these types of just going to make you more efficient at getting lean and maybe get you to get a little leaner faster. But , if you've accumulated a nice covering of coating over your abs throughout the fall and winter and think that by popping a pill is going to inexplicably take you in shape and correct months of inactivity and improper dieting, you will absolutely kidding yourself. Nothing will ever make up for proper nutrition and work out. Nada, zip, there is no magic pill! Sorry! Now I'm not saying weight reducers don't work at all because they do work if you use them right side by side with a proper diet and workout routine and with what I explained in the following paragraph above about receptors. My main point was people today thinking that by popping a fat burning pill, they are miraculously visiting lose a ton of fat and be in tip top shape in no time. Like I just said above, "Fat burners are not going to make you lean; they're simply just going to make you more efficient at getting lean and maybe make you find a little leaner faster. " By taking fat burners, people psychologically imagine they are losing weight because of a pill, but they really are not. So , the perfect advice I can give you is if you're going to use the fat burner route, work with it wisely and by wisely I mean, use it when you come to a point wheresoever you've tried everything and you can't lose that extra determined fat through diet and cardio. Don't just start using them for the hell of it because you think it's going to work the best because of this, 9 out of 10 times you will see no results from the fat burners to begin with because you are dieting and doing cardio and that's what's reducing fat, so the effects are minimal. Bottom line is there are many, others compounds being added to, and marketed as fat loss agents. Just be sure to not get sucked in with all the fat burner hype and trends, obtain best bang for your buck, and always research what you're putting in your body. Contentment!

Tips on calling out appropriation for the passive type of people.

1) Use the correct terms repeatedly in their presence. "Spirit animal" is an appropriative term if you're not native American. "Animal guide" however, is not. It's the broad concept that exists in many faiths without stealing the language of a specific practice. So, if you find your non native friend often using the term spirit animal, engage in a little conditioning. Not everyone can confidently and directly correct or educate others. So whenever they say something like that, respond, but use the term animal guide. Always use that term around them. It may take time, but eventually your blatant refusal to use the appropriative word should start ringing some bells. 2) Try educating during a time when the topic isn't being directly discussed. Say your non native friend talks about how they use smudging in their rituals. It can be intimidating to confront directly, so try an indirect approach. Wait until the topic has passed, even on a different day if you want, then just casually bring up the information. If you're not directly addressing them the moment they mention doing something appropriative, they're less likely to get defensive and lash at you when you mention this. It gives a more general information vibe rather than a "this is directed to you specifically" vibe. Maybe the next day you address the group in general. Maybe even address someone else in the group (though so the other can hear, when they're paying attention) and treat it like an interesting fact. "I was just reading about how smudging is a specific type of smoke cleansing performed by native American cultures" or something along those lines. 3) Bait and switch Your non African/Afro-carribean friend looking to get into making voodoo dolls? Act as though you want to learn with them. Everyone wants a partner to learn with. Exchange information. Make sure the information you exchange with them directly points to why outsiders shouldn't make voodoo dolls and the general term "poppet" is more appropriate. Express genuine concern over the proper terminology use as though you didn't previously know. People are more likely to listen to information if they feel like they've kind of learned it with you as opposed to you telling them directly. ------ I've seen a lot of messages going around about how people want to help in these situations, but are too shy, passive, or anxious to engage in direct confrontation. So, I thought this might be helpful. It's important to help educate others and lessen the impact of negative practices in our community. If possible, I want to be sure that everyone has some kind of tools in their belt to help the cause, even if confrontation isn't within your ability. ((The above examples are only a few examples of appropriation. There are a lot more in a lot more different cultures. Pay attention to the practitioners of certain cultures to gain more knowledge on what is and isn't appropriative. Cultural sharing is a thing, but only occurs when you're allowed/initiated/taught by someone directly practicing that faith (does not apply to other outsiders that were allowed to learn. It's not your faith to share) Be Mindful, be respectful, be polite, and learn that no means no))
